A piece of removable Flex Pipe should get used for that exhaust . Or simply re-route it . While the Gearbox is OUT , ALWAYS do the Clutch . Well done with the repair . Indeed , a BIG job .
Thanks 👍🏼 So glad that jobs behind me. I welded a flange onto the exhaust, so next time, it'll be much easier to remove.
D90 and RRC the good car.
What about the Series 2a? Is that a good car?
We did Greymouth , Hokatika, Fox Glacier, Wanaka and TeAnau, what beautiful country it is compared to our homeland Australia. We would love to come back again and do some of that. Wonder what the hire car company would say doing it in a hire vehicle.
Whereever theres a Blackadder in that area, there's gold to be found. Rumor has it that old man blackadder had found the motherlode somewhere in there, but took his secret with him, as do a lot of people.

@@hayden_jones Greetings I’ve heard the track to cowshed hut was wrecked in a flood then someone mentioned it may be open l live up in the Waikato so it’s a bit hard to find out cheers
@lesmondk3376 yeah I'm not sure. Cowshed hut is a long way from chch !! Someone down queenstown way might know.
Do a time trial to see which of you gets through there the fastest. That would be worth a subscription.
I have a 69 series 2a I’m doing a vw tdi and Jeep ax15 5 speed swap on. Your videos have really motivated me to get it done and get out and have some adventures. Love the videos.
Thanks Jeremy. Appreciate the comment. I love hearing about people getting motivated by my videos. 👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome videos. Do you think a snorkel is a must for these tracks?
It all depends on the weather / river level. It's not a must to have a snorkel when the rivers low.
Driver error. The new Defender can spin circles around the old Defender. Also the driver was just not equipped or knowledgeable on its use let alone having the necessary recovery gear and know how
The lack of variety in the fleet is disappointing. Toyota, Nissan, Isuzu, Suzuki at least would be good to have in the pack. Funny to watch those old school British trucks bouncing over rocks with car like travel and firm bumpstops. Looks uncomfortable. The wife's 100 series landcruiser woukd piss through this track though, so that's good to know. Most of the tracks people on RUclips are doing would see it damaged or stuck with the IFS and unprotected sills.
Interesting comment 🤔 We generally keep it to Land Rovers (the older the better) If you want to see Toyotas, nissans, Isuzu etc there's PLENTY of video's out there for you. We love the challenge of driving these 50-60 year old vehicles into places like this. I'm sure your wife's 100 series landcruiser is awesome. Maybe you could make a video about it? I hope you enjoyed the video? We had a fantastic time making it 😀
@@hayden_jones it's a bone stock city kids/grocery run truck (first 25 years and 410k km) turned tow vehicle for serious use, so far. Even though it's probably one of the most bulletproof trucks ever made I cannot risk hurting it using it for fun just yet. Once the hard work is done, maybe. Not video worthy, though. May use it to haul out a 12 tonne 12m launch in low ratio at some point, if so video will be published :-D The video was alright but I skipped the on-foot section. I'm doing research to try to figure out how to promote another really good channel that has way too few subs, views, likes for the really good production quality he produces. No affiliation, just want to help someone who deserves it. Your vids seem to get the most views of kiwi vids, maybe because of the land rovers? Not sure. Thumbnail and title must be part of it. Thiugh you are low on subs too. Any insights welcome :-)
Great photography. Thanks Hayden.
You're welcome 😊 🙏🏽

@@TheProudNorth The perfect size for a series Land Rover
I live where Range Rovers and new Defenders are commonplace, yet most of their drivers have no idea how their cars work. I went to an off road event where new Rover owners thought they could drive . I recovered more than one in my 64 Series 2A. Also, no buttons.
I found the key to off roading a series land rover was about assessing the amount of momentum required to climb a slope or get through deep ruts . On standard springs that momentum would have you bouncing about the cab. When I fitted parabolics to mine it made a very noticeable difference . A much softer flexible ride on and off road. They improved articulation helping all 4 wheels to stay in contact with the ground .
It's easy if you pull the car forward to this position
Nice one Hayden! Maybe one day I'll have a crack at tinkering with gearboxes.
Thanks. It's not an easy job! I'm glad it's behind me now that's for sure.
Hey Folks. Lose the music on the water. You can't beat the sound of water and "bonk" of boat on bank and peace ad quiet.
I totally agree, but unfortunately, I had the wrong microphone plugged in, and the audio was shocking (way too much wind noise / distortion)
Good video. Entertaining and informative as usual. Have taken gearbox/transfer box out of my 110 ffr several times on my own. Not an easy task. But extremely satisfying once completed. Next time it will be easier! now go and enjoy!
Thanks so much. I definitely will enjoy it !
Good Evening Mate.. Thoroughly enjoyed this video as do I the rest of them... I too had to strip and rebuild my Series 2 Land Rover gear box... Had no Bloody clue what I was doing as I too am not a Mechanics Backside...😂😂 Learned a Hell of a lot and did actually have to call in an Old School Bullet to clip me round the back of my head and help me out... I had great fun though..!! Best Regards From Zimbabwe...
Thank you so much. These vehicles are perfect to learn on. I can't believe how much I learned from this.
Thanks for the video Hayden! I've always been interested in how your Celica? gearbox was coupled to the Toyota B Diesel and Landrover series Transfer and this video answers all those questions! From what i could see with lots of pausing, its a Landrover input gear with the splines milled out and the centre of a Toyota Input gear pressed and welded in place? Then a custom made rear mainshaft bearing housing? Gearbox Crossmember looks very neat
Cheers Nick. I'm happy you enjoyed it.
Amateur 4wder here..would u easily get thro on a/ts? Thinking my 02 prado would be near scraping the walls in the last tunnel..but if the range rover got thro then should be no problem as about same width
Hi, the tunnel size won't be an issue. A/Ts will work. There's nothing too challenging, but keep a close eye on the weather.
Cheers .best channel I've found on tracks in south island
Cheers 🍻
Felicitaciones!
Well done mate. Great effort 👌
Thank you so much 😀
Wreckanic is the technical name I use. My B motor has a bell housing to the lr gear box. Interesting to see it done different. Not sure which option is better. Also interesting use of hylomar. The forward control build is at cab build stage. Getting exciting. Recent images are on TikTok.
Wreckanic! Haha, nice. Does your LR gearbox have overdrive?
@hayden_jones We have two LRs Forward Control IIA and Series III 109 ute cab. We have put the 2.6l motors in each. Removing the B motor from the SIII. Neither have OD. Would like one if you know of any?
Email me. Or if you have Instagram, send me a private message.
Why that oil spill when cleaning it? Take it to a carwash so the oil will be separated.
There was probably less than a tea spoon of oil. Oil does come from the ground anyway.... right? 😀
@@hayden_jones i know i am a driller for oil but wasting oil is something different it spreads all over. I like your videos but i see a lot of people working on cars and spill oil everwhere. Its just a good practica to clean at a place where oil is separated.
What a wonderful and charming group of people and cars. I really like these videos. I watch them with my son and then we pack our swags onto the roof of our Lada Niva and go to the Carpathian Mountains. This is what its all about. Sharing a passion
Our pleasure! I like these videos as well.
Good video, would like to say its the first time I've seen moving ground through the footwells of a land rover but 😬
😂 Thanks
Nice job. Good on you for getting in and having a go. That's the first time I've seen inside a land rover transfer case. Thanks for sharing.
No worries, I'm glad you enjoyed it 👍🏼
I'm no mechanic I'm also a hobbyist and i find the best way to learn something is to do it. My first major mechanical job I did was replacing the head gasket on my g60 patrol but there is always something to learn when doing things with old vehicles. Not many people show things like this when they are not a professional but its always interesting to watch people learn how their vehicles work.
Totally agree. The amount of stuff I learned during this job was crazy. I've got another huge project coming up that will teach me bucket loads I'm sure. Hope you enjoyed the video 👍🏼
These 4WDs make a person mechanic 😂
Agreed. The best vehicle to learn from
Hello Hayden, What engine and gearbox are you running on your land Rover? I need a Toyota engine on my land Rover as well...
Hey, The engine is a Toyota B (3.0ltr diesel) and the gearbox is a modified W50. Theres a lot of work involved with doing this conversion, so choose carefully.
Yeah, I think I need to do more research on gearbox
@@maruboy5 There used to be a guy who made adapter plates to fit a Nissan LD28 up to the stock gearbox - pretty sure they're not around anymore, but the adapter plates do show up now and then
There is also a Mercruiser / Volvo Penta conversion as well! It’s a 3.0 lt version of the General Motors “ Iron Duke. Gear driven camshaft, 130 hp. They were used in marine applications and are bulletproof. I had one in my boat. I remember seeing a video of a guy doing the swap. I think his channel name is Cory Anderson.
Terrific video, very enjoyable. Land Rover, making ordinary men into mechanics for decades. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Jim. 👍🏼 After this, I feel like I better understand the whole process now. It was a great experience.
I had a LWB Series 2 with the old Holden V8 coupled to a Nissan gearbox. Like the idiot I am, I sold it and the guy who bought it wrecked the Landy and kept the engine and gearbox for another project. Well done on the repairs - it was great to see as much as you have presented. Ex Chch guy here, too, living in Canberra.
Cheers mate, really appreciate your comment. My goal was always to make an entertaining video with bits of humor and try and educate a couple of people on a few things.
Hi Hayden, glad to see all went well with the gearbox repair, can't wait for your next drive around the bedt countryside in the world, best regards from a ex ChCh lad now living in Melbourne, PS: That didn't sound too noisy, Les
Yeah the microphone limits excessive noise. Trust me, it was bloody loud ! I can't wait to head back into the beautiful souther alps.
I've removed several Landy gear/transfer boxes & always take out the floor & seat box. tie the doors forward & use a crane, (rental), to lift it out the door. No crawling around required. In my younger days I lifted one out with a rope over my shoulders & carried the bloody thing out of my carport.
After taking it out underneath, I'd imagine going out the top would actually be easier!! I could say "oh well, next time I'll take it out the top" but I hope there isn't a next time !! 😉
@@hayden_jones Having just done this.... I wish I had the x member which can be unbolted.....
Interesting. I guess either way sucks 😕
@Hayden_jones , yep either way sucks
@@hayden_jones in my Series 1, original factory workshop manual under gearbox removal it states, first, remove the roof. !!
Great work on this. All of my big mechanic projects (and learning!) happened on Land Rover products. But not Toyota products on a landrover. That’s a bit less common I reckon.
Yeah, you don't hear of many toyota conversions in a Land Rover.
Why exactly is everyone around the globe powerwashing their greasy/oily engines and transmissions in their driveway? Because the colors it makes on the ground are so nice to look at? I am not an environmental activist driving an old land cruiser myself and these things are oily and greasy enough when driven - no need to make an extra mess and blasting everything in the soil. 🙄
19:31 ... and then i spotted the greenpeace box 🤪
Don't worry mate, off camera I scooped up all the grease and oil and took it around to my local recycling plant. 😀
Nice work,
I've got no mates and struggle by myself , also keep forgetting to video if for my weak channel 😅
