5.7 Vortec Head Gasket Replacement/Intake Gasket Failure 1997 K1500

The vehicle is a 1997 K1500. This engine had a serious intake manifold failure, causing gallons of coolant to go into the lifter valley. Gasket failed where the coolant crossover is located (driver side if I remember). I lost heat and then the engine started stumbling in the 2 miles I needed to drive to the nearest parking lot. Head gasket probably was not required, but I wanted to clean all of the carbon out anyway. Oil + Coolant = Chocolate Milk
Also make sure to use the metal problem solver gasket to replace the intake gasket! FelPro MS98000T or Head Gasket Set HST 7733 PT-16

The 5.7 vortec is one of the easiest engines to work on but you still have to be organized. Pay attention to what you're doing and have a good time knowing you did it yourself 👍👍👍👍

I'm glad to see your temp and oil pressure run a little low like my Tahoe. I just blew my head gasket, the job looks pretty simple. May as well upgrade the injection to the newer style while I'm in there.

If you let the muffler rust off like mine maybe it will

I have the same engine and the oil pressure on my truck at high idle is at 40psi, but at a red light, at idle it drops to 20psi. On your video it looks like ur truck does the same, is that normal?

That can be more normal, but my oil pressure issues have gotten worse, I am rebuilding the engine now. 20 psi is fine at idle.

Did u pull the oil pan and clean that too or did u do a oil flush

I flushed all the oil. There ended up being crankshaft damage from the engine running on water for a short period.

What did u use to clean ur pistons with

Carb clean, wd40 and a wire wheel
