I'm so happy to see Xenogears get some love. It's still my favourite game of all time, and I still hope that one day the entire 6 part series will be made, rather than just part 5 (which is xenogears). That game hit me so hard as a teenager, and was one of the main motivators that resulted in me doing my Bachelors Degree in philosophy. If you are someone who loves complex and deep narrative, do not pass this game up.
Have you played Xenosaga 1-3 and Xenoblade 1-3? I'd be curious to see where you would rank them to Gears. I personally like Xenosagas story 1-3 the most even though Gears and Blade were all essentially retellings. I do remember playing Xenogears, FF7 and FF6 all in the same year and I found Gears to be the best of the three so its a shame it didn't get as much recognition.
I agree that Xenoblade X is highly underrated. The whole Xeno franchise is so beautiful just for the simple fact that the folks at Monolith Soft has the balls to try and follow through with these huge visions. They (mostly) throw commercialism to the wind and go forth with these really heavy and heady ideas.
me too brother, the huge world buildings, the mysteries, the enemies, the custom suits, the lurking dangers, the amazing SKELLS, the lovely characters full of emotions, you make your own story and are blown away by the ending because Mira it's that kind of place, when Tatsu made the dance of happiness I felt it bro.
Xenogears is legendary, my personal #1 JRPG of all time (a tall order!) , and #2 favorite video game of all time. Glad to hear it come up on this channel again! The Square Enix store is actually releasing 3 awesome figures this year: Fei, Elly, and Weltall! :D
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Everything I ever wanted in a narrative driven, open world RPG. It was hard placing it over Xenogears and A Link to the Past....but it's almost like phases of life for me. Witcher as a wiser adult, Xenogears as young man, and LTTP for my childhood :)
MoviesNGames007uk OMG really? I had no idea, that's a travesty! Not even through PS3/PSP download now? I feel your pain, though. North America never got a proper release of Terranigma for the SNES.
Thanks for taking the time to look at this series. Xenogears is my favourite game of all time and so far nothing has dethroned it. I haven't had a chance to play a lot of games in the xeno-series just because of my job but the one thing I will always acknowledge is how much xenogears had played an important part in my life and helped define my gaming tastes. Johnny there is some information I want to provide you especially regarding Xenogears and I don't want you to take it the wrong because even though I'm a fan of xenogears - I don't consider myself an expert. I think the xenogears soundtrack you own might be a fake. The only reason why I say this is my wife had made the same mistake when she bought me the xenogears soundtrack for the first time. I did some research on the vgmdb (Video Game Music Data Base) and that cover art is the most common cover art for bootleg copies of the soundtrack. There is only one authentic version of the soundtrack that uses that black cover art with the red X so if you have any free time I want you to check the side of the soundtrack and look for the code number. If the code number on the side of the jewel case is SSCX-10013 (It's Authentic). However if the code on the side of the jewel case is: GM-516~7 (It's a Bootleg) A&G-033~4 (It's a Bootleg) I know you like your products to be authentic so I just wanted to provide you with that information. There are also tons of great xenogears merchandise to own. It seems like square enix is ready to give this game the much needed attention it deserves. If you check the square enix store, they have figures of Fei, Elly, and the Weltall available for pre-order. They recently had a xenogears 20th anniversary concert which somebody had put on youtube. It was taken down after a few days, but I got my wife to copy it and record it before it was taken down off the website. They've also had a xenogears vinyl released as well as the xenogears millennium editions as well which where deluxe versions of the ps1 games with some one of a kind xenogears stuff. I still need to play the games in the xenoblade trilogy and I still haven't beat xenosaga III yet, so I'll have a lot of xeno goodness to look forward to. If your interested in getting other kinds of xenogears items, I hope you'll have a look at some of those and see if you have the space to add those to your collection.
It didn't even occur to me there was an issue with Disc 2 while playing as a kid... only learned it was an issue for some people when reading on the internet years later.
Xenoblade Chronicles X was my introduction to the Xeno series and I put 200+ hours and never finished it but I loved every bit of it. Then I played Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and put about 150+ hours and finished it and what an amazing game. Monlith Soft has become one of my favorite studios/developer. Can't wait for the Torna expansion to get back to the game again.
Well, the Xenoblade games are the longest (haven't played 2, but 1 took me about 90 hours). Xenogears is about 40 hours and the xenosaga games are about 25 hours each. Just... survive through 2 to get to the best part with 3 as they are a complete trilogy. It is the only series in which you do need to play them in order to understand the story... or just RUclips the cutscenes, but 3 is a genuinely all around great game!
I always seem to come away from these collection videos both amazed and extremely jealous of your humongous collection. And then all I can think about is how much I want all that stuff you have in my collection as well. Lol. Cool stuff Johnny.
Xenogears has a very special place in my heart. There was something about the story when I first played it many years ago. The combat was just so fun and intuitive, and the OST as you mentioned is very godlike.
Yeah, before Sak made the massive tactical error that was the FF movie and the company got overrun by soulless money men who indulged Nomura's atrocious storytelling.
@@bobbyphillips1077 Don't blame Nomura for everything, it was upper management's fault too, and in fact mostly. Luminous? That was them. Cancelling FF versus as is? Them. Putting Nomura on like 87 different projects all at once? Again, management. He's surely not the only good director they have, but they're stretching him over everything for some reason, that reason being he brings in the dough.
"I don't have a time for 150 hours" - just to let you know, I have 600+ hours in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 already, and they still not finished with new content :) thanks for showing us your collection. This is my dearest series of all, and Monolithsoft is on par at the top of Japanese developers with Falcom, slightly behind. Thank you again.
I started with Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. It was actually the game that got me back in to gaming properly after a few years of only really getting the main Pokemon games. I'd seen a few beautiful looking screenshots and I was intrigued. I went to Game in the UK one Saturday morning and got the limited edition with the special red Wii pro controller. The 480p didn't bother me as I hadn't played an HD console at the time and I was blown away by the size and scope of the world, then as I got into the game the mechanics and story had me gripped. It instantly became one of my most memorable games of all time. I spent several months playing only that game and I loved every second of it. It's one of the few games I was genuinely sad when I finished it. When they announced Xenoblade chronicles X just after the Wii U was released I couldn't believe it, because as much of a cult following that the original game had it was still pretty niche and wasn't sure if we'd ever get another game. It took nearly 3 years to eventually come out but it totally loved up to my excitement. It had a very different feel to the first game which was slightly off putting at first but the more I played it the more I realised how incredible it was. The world was huge and absolutely stunning and there is so much to do and so many deep layers to the gameplay it is quite overwhelming but everything works so well. Even though it was very different in many ways the key ingredients were there, a huge world to explore, incredible music and a fantastic battle system. Spent many happy months with it. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the highlight of the Switch reveal presentation for me. Again another different graphical style but a definite return to the more story focuses gameplay of the Wii original. The game is incredible, it has so much content that you can spend many months playing and still not see everything. The story and characters are wonderful and the battle system improved further. Collecting all the different blade characters was a great addition and their designs are quite brilliant. The new Torna dlc is adding even more to this stunning game. I'm a huge Xenoblade fan but would definitely love yo check out the older titles in the loosely connected series, especially Xenogears. These games really are works of art.
Great video John! Very interesting series. I have an number of JRPGs in my collection I still haven't gotten around to playing, one of them is Xenoblade Chronicles X. I'll set up my WiiU and play it tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation :)
I remember reading the review for Xenosaga Ep.1 in Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, and it was like, "Yeah, you basically have to devote your life to this game for about a solid month to really enjoy it." It was really the first console game to have such a massive lore that it had to come with an in-game appendix that explained the various terms that got thrown around in the dialogue. Even now, Mass Effect and Dragon Age are the only series that come close to how obsessively detailed the world was. And that detail extended right down to the physical medium; it was also the first PS2 game to use a dual-layered DVD. In jRPGs before it, you rarely saw detailed 3D models of the world's everyday objects. Even Final Fantasy X, if you look closely, uses a lot of prerendered backdrops in the towns. But Xenosaga had keyboards and stationary and dinner plates and everything. Alongside MGS2, it was the game that made you compare penis size with the XBOX and GameCube and take satisfaction in your choice of the Sony brand.
My favorite part of the day is always after work, get drunk, watch HappyConsoleGamer videos. I have watched you since the beginning and I have seen all of your videos. Point is they never get old! Johnny you are amazing and I’ll always be here watching. Thank you.
I always found this series fascinating. Every game is very unique and stands on it's own, but they all share the same story concepts and their ambitious sense of scope. I still haven't completed Xenogears and most of the Xenosaga trilogy, but I appreciate all of the games for what they are, especially Xenoblade Chronicles, which is in my opinion one of the best games ever made. My dream would be a HD remaster of Xenoblade Chronicles for the Switch and a port of XCX with Quality of Life and balancing improvements
I absolutely love this series. Completely agree with you - It’s so large in scope that it’s difficult to explain to people that haven’t played it. I’m desperate for them to bring Chronicles X to the Switch though as you say, I doubt that will happen. I put in hundreds and hundreds of hours across these titles and still not fully seen everything. I’m a huge fan just like you and have lots of the collectible merch and books etc. Thanks for posting this. It’s made my day. Great vid! 👍🏻😊👍🏻
Hansiger Obba I'm 100% sure it's not going to be xeno related heck xenoblade 2 had to retcon the first game to make it related and they also just shoved in the zhohar in for no reason. Takahashi him self said he wanted to take a break.
Wow johnny we have almost identical Xeno series collections, im also an old school fan and have played many of the earlier ones multiple times. It never hurts to go back and give gears another play through, you always get a little bit more out of it.
The Xenosaga trilogy is one of my favorite game series of all time and one of the reasons I got into rpgs. Oh Johnny i recommend playing Xenoblade Chronicles on Dolphin emulator, it looks so amazing with the enhanced visuals and stable framerate.
@@XanderVJ Except the Zohar is anything BUT surface level. It's quite literally a divine instrument and it's very existence influences the plot of every single Xeno game.
Xenogears is my favourite game of all time. It changed my life! Xenoblade Chronicles X is my second favourite, I love the idea of a city from Earth landing on an alien planet, and then building it up.
By a happy coincidence, as a newcomer to the series I just started playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS. I did not even realise it was related to Xenogears. This was really interesting, thanks! Oh, I am really enjoying Xenoblade, and I could well imagine sinking hundreds of hours into it!
I love Xeno series. I realize this video is 4 years old now but I just saw it now. I absolutely adore Xeno games, although, Xenosaga was less good in my opinion. Not bad, but not good either. I would put them in order of 1. Xenogears, 2. Xenoblade X, 3. Xenoblade (1), 4. Xenoblade 2, 5. Xenoblade 3. And then the sagas, don't rember them well anymore. To your question, Xeno X is really underrated. You totally should play Xeno X if you haven't already! I wish I still had it, I wanna replay it so bad. You can always play little bit at a time if you don't have much time on your hands. My only negatives about it is the New LA music, and the terrible cliffhanger in the end of the game which will probably never be continued. Music anywhere else is wonderful, and I got used to the city music in time, so it wasn't that bad after all. Xenoblade 3 hadn't seen daylight yet when you recorded this but I'll just leave my opinion about it here anyway. It's a great game, but it feels like it's missing a soul. I don't know how else to describe it. It did improve many things compared to what came before, but at the same time it didn't really seem to have a soul. Or an identity. It was trying to make you reminiscent of previous Xenoblades, but left no memory of it's own. Listening the music in the first zone made go find Xenoblade 2 Tantal music track. I loved it. But Xenoblade 3 itself had not a single memorable music track that I had to just stop and listen. And this goes beyond the music. The scenery have some reminiscent places too. I did play 200 hours of it, and finished it too. It's a great game. But even greater games leave it in shadow. That is of course, only my opinion. 😄
I didn't even know that xenogears and xenosaga were related, I think is interesting this series have jumped from square to namco to nintendo.. Interesting saga
I adore this series! I still have to play the PS2 games but I've played all the others (have yet to complete them lol) but having a wonderful time taking my time and exploring, doing quests, etc. I truly hope they keep making more Xeno games.
because of this video I decided to marathon the entire series. i'm currently starting xenoblade chronicles on the wii. so far xenoblade seems to be my favorite, but I loved all the games. they all had their own charm
there's a rumor going around that an HD xenosaga collection is being developed for the switch and i would KILL for that to be reality. if they could thrown in the original xenogears and maybe an HD port of xenoblade too that would be incredible
I finally played Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii recently. I was surprised how it got it's hooks into me. My playthrough was about 125 to 130 hours and it didn't feel like a waste of my time...at all! What's so well done is how it rewards you for exploring. It's the simplest little thing, but the game gives you EXP for discovering new areas. It gives a really rewarding feeling and usually there are some pretty nifty things to find in these (sometimes) secret places. Even though it's a Wii game....I think it looks spectacular. Especially when you reach Gaur Plains for the 1st time and when you're climbing the Mechonis (seeing it's Fallen Arm on the horizon, the place you just visited beforehand) . Plus that music on the Gaur Plains by Ace+.....WOW!!!! So gorgeous! The only thing that's a bit wonky is the character designs, especially their faces, but you get used to it. This was the first Xeno game I've ever played, so at some point I'll move onto Xenoblade X & Xenoblade 2.
I've the same "probleme" with Chronicles X. I've never finished but I've played already about 60 hours on it. And each week there's a voice in my head saying "play it again, play it again..." :-)
I love Xenogears so much it blew me away playing it a few years ago and is my second favorite game, its so cool that you have perfect works. It really is beyond a video game, the way I thought of it was on another level above games that are on another level above excellent games.
I am really jealous of your awesome collection. I started with the series with XC2 back 2018 and I regret not buying the physical editions of XC2, TTGC and XC:DE when I could. I've been playing through the series in preparation for XC3 and today I just finished Xenosaga Ep II, awesome game.
Loved Xenogears but Xenosaga 3 is easily my fav in the series and one of the best games ever made. Even Xenoblade which starts out like a simple revenge story had such a captivating story. Really hope Takahashi returns to a story heavy rpg as there's nothing quite like that.
Currently the most ambitious RPG-series (in terms of the scope of the world building and plot development, and the sheer amount of text and characters) with an ongoing story/setting is probably The Legend of Heroes: Trails-games, starting from Trails in the Sky (2004) to upcoming Trails of Cold Steel IV (2018), nine games within three sub-series marking the 3/5 of the overall story, and making the series 60% done after 14 years of development. I wonder what kind of legacy it will have after it finally reaches its conclusion. For better or worse it has proven that Falcom refuses to compromise (aka make "Xenogears' disc 2"-style solutions), it's certainly admirable to see developers actually realizing their creations regardless of the scope. With a smaller, passionate and more focused development team (like 90s BioWare or Nihon Falcom, instead of using time and expenses of a big company) Xeno would have probably been a fully realised series, most likely for Japan only home computers anyway. Game development is even more expensive nowadays so we can be very thankful that niche, personal projects and continuations (that aren't reboots or sequels to massive triple-A-series) like Nier and Trails are still getting made and actually released.
For me Xenoblade Chronicles is the culmination of gaming. Best game ever made. Music, Art , Gameplay , Story and AMBITION. Its fucking flawless. I will own this collection one day too. I swear... awesome video Johny!
Great video. I absolutely loved Xenogears when it came out on the Playstation right around the time I was graduating college, but I missed completely missed Xenosaga for some reason. Xenoblade Chronicles and its sequel are two of the best JRPG's of modern times, IMO. They've really picked up the mantle of that grand, epic JRPG that we used to see back in the mid to late 90's, and carry on that spirit like no other series does. Hoping to get a port of Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Switch, as I never owned a Wii U.
I picked up a copy a couple of years ago now of Xenogears because of your recommendation but I put it down for awhile now and got wrapped up in life since, looks like I may pick it up and go hard and finish it
Xenoblade Chronicles 2, made me feel like I was playing Xenogears again back in 98. There are sooo many similarities to Xenogears, that it's hard not to notice them when you dive deep into the game. I love the whole Xeno series but if I had to rate them it would be: 1. Chronicles 2, 2. Gears, 3. Saga 3, and 4. Chronicles 1. Never got to play X because I didn't have a Wiiu. Just an amazing series.
I am happy to say I share a lot of similarities with you on this collection, except for 2 I never played Chronicles or Chronicles 2. I even have them sexy books for Gears and Saga :). I'm a little late on posting this lol, cause I've been watching catching up on your passed vids. Love your content.
I only ever played Xenoblade Chronicles X and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Couldn't get into X for some reason but I loved, loved, loved Chronicles 2. It had great characters, a very interesting and unique world and an engaging story. And the combat system was pretty amazing...if also a tad unintuitive. I really only got the knack of it when I was 50 or 60 hours in. Cant wait for the DLC which is supposed to hit in September. And I hope they keep the series going, its really something different and sticks out.
Xenoblade X is criminally underrated. It easily offers the most satisfying combat of the series, the most customization in the series, the best map design and biggest open world of the series, the soundtrack may have some of the worst tracks of the series but it also has some of the best in the series easily such as Your Voice, The Way, Uncontrollable, And a lot of the World themes as well as Theme X are amazing. It’s one of Takahashi’s best works, in the series an easy top 3 for me usually taking the top spot for the series.
I've always wanted to get into this series, but I was so intimidated by the scope of it all that I didn't know if I had time or the will to get through it all. I love RPGs and this series sounds amazing so I might give it a shot.
Such a great series. I think I'm only missing Xenosaga 3 because like you, I got kind of bogged down in the series after the second one. Now I would love to go back and revisit the series after hearing how much you enjoyed 3.
Stuff We Play I put 126 hours into the 1st Chronicles on wii. It was exceptional. After about 10 hours of X, I walked away. I couldn’t get into it. I now have the collectors edition of Chronicles 2 and just waiting for having the time to play through it.
Yeah, and it was Xenosaga 2 too. They added a DVD with like 10 hours of cutscenes from the first game so you could understand the story, but come on, who's gonna watch all that? A re-release of the trilogy would actually be pretty cool and get more people interested in the franchise thanks to Xenoblade's popularity
We in America were almost screwed out of Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower. I remember there being detailed guides informing people how to soft mod their Wiis so that they could import them.
I really want remake of all these jrpgs of PS 1, I mean xenogears, legend of dragoon, koudelka, legend of legaia, suikoden 2 will be like dream come true for me
As a long time fan of the Xeno series, especially Xenogears, I wish you would have spent a little more time talking about it. But like you said this isn't a review and Xenogears is bigger than all of us. But from what you did say about it I can tell you have a deep love, understanding and respect for it. Just from what you said I would enjoy having a conversation with you about it, though we'd likely end up talking about the soundtrack by itself for hours on end. hah
I am playing Xenogears right now for the first time and I am loving it. I would love to see a video of you talking about the game and hearing your thoughts of it, it doesn't have to be a review.
No fucking way! My wife and I were JUST talking about whether you had an extensive Xeno collection and how good a video on it would be lol. My favorite game series, up there with Zelda.
So jealous of what you guys got over there. In Europe we only had Xenosaga 2 with a dvd describing 1s story and the Xenoblade games. Not even Xenogears on the ps store!!!
I’m telling yeah man. My phone is self aware. I just picked up Xenosaga 1,2,3 yesterday and then this pops up for me. Lol on another note great video. Very cool
So odd that you should post this the same week that I started playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Love it so far, even went and bought the amazing soundtrack.
Xenogears/saga are my favorite games of all time!! "Ambitious" is exactly the word - I can't think of another fictional universe with as much scope, and I longed for a continuation for so long. I haven't tried Xenoblade at all though.. I loved the long cutscenes of Saga because they were necessary to fully realize the plot, but I hear Xenoblade are more open-world games which I am not fond of. What I've been wondering is, are they connected enough to Gears/Saga and have similar amazing plots to justify investing in consoles I don't have?
Taikaru xenoblade games are full of cutscenes, xenoblade 1 cutscenes if put In movie form are already longer then xenosaga 1s cutscenes in movie form and xenoblade 2 has 13+ hours of cutscenes, X isnt as story heavy as blade 1 and 2 but it tends to tell its story in different ways via sidequests which are very important in that game
I’d agree Xenogears and Xenosaga are quite religious... Xenosaga 3 is probably in my top 5 favorite games of all time (I also remember doing an extreme deep dive reading every single entry in the in-game database) so good!
I totally fell in love with xenogears. I never have played the xenosaga yet I definitely will if it becomes a collection remaster or I'd buy them all seperate as remasters as well.
thats a sick collection Johnny! I grabbed the collectors edition of Xenoblade chronicles X i opened it he he, you actually get the soundtrack on a mini usb stick thats themed with a robotic outter look on the usb stick itself! kinda cool! game is definitely underappreciated for sure tho! its a better rpg than most people realize which is to bad!
Wow I've only ever played final fantasy/DragonQuest games, but since watching you johnny you helped me discover new RPG's/JRPG series Such as Ys and Now Xeno ive gotta go buy these games as soon as i can fantastic.
Xenosaga was like having a game you played between episodes of an anime with a cool card game. Loved this game and the entire storyline. It was so good. But yeah, this was one of those first games that ushered in videos over gameplay. Now we have game trailers that have no game play
Xenosaga series were my favorite games ever they were so good unfortunately it was suppose to be a 6 game story but ended up getting cut to 3. I’m hoping for a hd collection in the future
Xenosaga and Xenogears development history is perhaps some of the most interesting of any game you'll find. I'm just disappointed that Namco forced the teams hand to condense the remaining 3 Xenogears games as well as Xenogears 3 and the latter half of what was originally intended for Xenosaga 2 into Xenosaga 3. Xenosaga was intended as a 6 part series with the first 3 games on PS2 and the second 3 slated for PS3 ( talk about counting your chickens before they've hatched). The sheer amount of research Sorya Saga and Tesuya Takahashi put into the material is really some of the deepest you'll find. For me Xenogears 2 holds a special place for me. Story wise it was the best of the 3. It kept close to the original intended story with some modifications I beleivet o bring Jr to the front. Someone more up to date on the background lore can fill that in with the correct information. We could never honestly get a remake or a reimagining of these games without these two. Xenosaga 2 also had the best and the worst music of the series. I haven't been able to get on board with the post Episode 3 titles. Xenoblade just seems like a shadow of what came before. I just can't take it seriously.
I agree wholeheartedly about Xenoblade. While I _love_ the series for being faithfully jRPG in an era where Final Fantasy is hot garbage and everyone else wants to be Dark Souls, Xenoblade gets several things fundamentally wrong about the overall experience of a Xeno game. The biggest being the Collectathon. _Good grief, I am tired of the Collectathon._ The combat system is also overhyped. It's basically Final Fantasy XII. And while I like Final Fantasy XII, it's not Xeno. Xeno is supposed to be about button combos and mechs.
That background music during the end of the video is Xenosaga Episode III's boss battle theme. Totally love that soundtrack. Extremely underrated game. And there is way too little love for Xenosaga here in the comment section and overall. Sadly, Episode II was pretty bad and the sadly only one we officially got in Europe. But I imported all three of them from the US and you can pretty much just skip the second one, watch all the sequences to catch up the story and get right to the very best third game. I absolutely love Episode III. It's easily among my top three or five games of all time (most of them are RPGs...) and it's responsible for me getting my most expensive piece of merchandise, I ever got. Namely the dollfie dream in my avatar picture. That's a 1:3 doll of KOS-MOS ver. 4, the most awesome character design ever done. I have lots and lots of merchandise and spend way too much for that stuff. I have collector's editions, but if I love a game, I will buy a lot of merch afterwards. And that KOS-MOS doll is above and beyond everything else you could ever buy for a game. But she also looks awesome. And overall, the whole series of Xeno franchises is awesome. Monolith Soft is one of the most talented studios out there. It's great that they finally start to get so much attention with the Xenoblade series. But they would have deserved it right from the very start at Square Soft and Xenogears or with Namco and Xenosaga.
Xenogears is easily my favorite PS1 game. Followed up by MGS, but Xeno is #1. There was also an anime produced of Xenosaga in the mid-2000's that's not too bad. Basically follows the first game. Earlier this year, Square Enix announced they would be doing figures of the characters and mecha from Xenogears under their Bring Arts line, showing off Fei, Citan, and Weltall. I think maybe Elle as well? Don't remember right now. Anyway, loved the video!
Never played the original Xeno series. I want to try it if, as the rumors go, they come to Switch as a HD remaster or remake. I started fall in love with the series since Xenoblade. Though not a fan of the battle system in XB1 and XBX, I love the battale system in XB2. XB2 is my favorite in the series so far.
@Luka Megurine, true the system is the same technically, but the way it was executed is different. Having to scroll left and right to get to an art vs 2 button press at most (and 1 button most of the time) to get to any art make a difference.
It's very story heavy.. but it's trying to tell perhaps the most epic story conceived. So it should be approached from that perspective. The gameplay isn't bad either though.
The gameplay is quite fun and the mechanics are great for it.-has variety,-robot mode is tactical,-cool moves learned in an interesting way,-has challenge in it. Jumping and that robot fighting game. Has flaws as well like the enemy you encounter repeatedly while climbing the tower.
I grew up on the ps1 but i didnt play xenogears till i was an adult and it completely blew me away. Kinda bitter sweet about this video because i would really like to get the hcg review but oh well
I'm so happy to see Xenogears get some love.

Xenoblade X 2 and xenoblade chronicles 3 and new IP is in development.
@@user-Void-Star was xcx2 ever announced as being in development??
@@DennepeerRelaxation yes it's in work you won't see until a few years.
@@user-Void-Star awesome. Thanks 👍
@@user-Void-Star it was never announced stopped spreading lies lol xb3 is the one coming out
Xenoblade Chronicles X is one of my favorite game worlds ever. I feel like I lived on Mira for like 6 months.
Me too! It was an experience and I loved every hour of it. I'd like to revisit Mira on my Switch.
I love how it's a celebration of the series the final level is straight out of gears
I love it please bring it to Switch
It's one of my three favourite games of the past 10 years alongside Breath of the Wild and Crusader Kings 2.
me too brother, the huge world buildings, the mysteries, the enemies, the custom suits, the lurking dangers, the amazing SKELLS, the lovely characters full of emotions, you make your own story and are blown away by the ending because Mira it's that kind of place, when Tatsu made the dance of happiness I felt it bro.
Xenoblade and Xenoblade 2 are Godsend!!! I also really enjoyed X but never finished it. Takahashi is the new Sakaguchi for me.
Europe never got Xenogears 😢
MoviesNGames007uk OMG really? I had no idea, that's a travesty! Not even through PS3/PSP download now? I feel your pain, though. North America never got a proper release of Terranigma for the SNES.
I just beat Witcher 3 and it was great. Played all 3 games in that series and they just got better each time.
You have good taste in games, man. I checked out your channel, will you be creating more content?
Xenogears 20th anniversary concert recently held on in Japan was amazing :)
However if the code on the side of the jewel case is:
GM-516~7 (It's a Bootleg)
A&G-033~4 (It's a Bootleg)
I know you like your products to be authentic so I just wanted to provide you with that information.
Xenogears is easily my favorite; best soundtrack, story, characters, and atmosphere. Hell, I even enjoyed Disc 2 haha!
If you didn’t play Xenoblade chronicles 1 definitive edition, you’re missing out.
Ive been afraid to play these games because they seem so time-consuming.
I guess I must be ... xeno-phobic
William Hetherington 10/10
@Alejandro R. M. over-'ambitious'.
HorgothTheRelentless 😂.
William Hetherington Like any jrpg, gotta dedicate time to them
Well, the Xenoblade games are the longest (haven't played 2, but 1 took me about 90 hours).
Trying to share the fun! Not trying to torture! :D
Xenogears has a very special place in my heart. There was something about the story when I first played it many years ago. The combat was just so fun and intuitive, and the OST as you mentioned is very godlike.
Xenogears was when morale was still high in Square, when creativity was flowing freely.
Yeah, before Sak made the massive tactical error that was the FF movie and the company got overrun by soulless money men who indulged Nomura's atrocious storytelling.
@@bobbyphillips1077
Don't blame Nomura for everything, it was upper management's fault too, and in fact mostly.
Monolithsoft is one of my favorite developers. The Xeno series is one of the best RPG series there is in my eyes. If you haven't yet check it out.
I still play xenogears :) and I love how the whole series is very vaguely connected (thanks perfect works)
And then Nintendo bought Monolith and they made Xenoblade. Great series as well.
It's people like you that sparked my interest in series like this. Keep up the good work :)
Amazing series - Xenogears was one of my first JRPGs and still my favorite. They've done a great job continuing the series with Saga and Chronicles!
My favorite part of the day is always after work, get drunk, watch HappyConsoleGamer videos. I have watched you since the beginning and I have seen all of your videos. Point is they never get old! Johnny you are amazing and I’ll always be here watching. Thank you.
Xenogears is legendary games in Ps1.
Xenogears ... hail to the king!
Matt16006 you should finish xenogears and see how much xenoblade took from it's crazy
Great vid! 👍🏻😊👍🏻
I hope Xeno never stops.
Hands down best games ever made.
Here's to the future !
Ilias Mastrogiorgos gonna have to wait a bit since they are taking a break with their new game
Luka Megurine their not taking a break they are already working on a new game since last year
Hansiger Obba that's what I said
break from Xeno games ? You dont know that but it looks more medieval with dragons and stuff from the concept arts
Thank you for giving XBC-X some well deserved love! The game is big but so rewarding i think.
The Xenosaga trilogy is one of my favorite game series of all time and one of the reasons I got into rpgs.
Oh Johnny i recommend playing Xenoblade Chronicles on Dolphin emulator, it looks so amazing with the enhanced visuals and stable framerate.
Xenosaga HD Switch please!
The series is unrelated?
The Zohar begs to differ.
Yes the The Xeno Franchise's multiverse mcguffin Edit It's scary how that 1 thing Has it connection to all Xeno franchise And its power
Nah, still unrelated. The connection just isn't there once you go beyond the surface level details.
Wow as a new fan of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 this has got me excited what a wonderful collection!
Loved Xenogears. Have been meaning to play the Xenosaga games, but my ps2 stutters during some of the cutscenes in episode 1.
I was gifted the artbook you showed at 12:25 ( the xenoblade cronicles one ) and I didnt know where it came from, now I know, thanks :)
Whoooooaaaaa! Did not expect to see this today, very nice! I finally played Xenogears a year-ish back. So glad I finally had that experience 👍.
I just discovered this channel a few days ago. Really love it. And Xenogears is my favorite video game of all time! Awesome collection!
It’s funny how Xeno started PlayStation exclusive but now it’s Nintendo exclusive.
Xenosaga was so great and ahead of its time on ps2 imo
I only ever played Xenoblade Chronicles X and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Couldn't get into X for some reason but I loved, loved, loved Chronicles 2. It had great characters, a very interesting and unique world and an engaging story. And the combat system was pretty amazing...if also a tad unintuitive. I really only got the knack of it when I was 50 or 60 hours in. Cant wait for the DLC which is supposed to hit in September. And I hope they keep the series going, its really something different and sticks out.
You are a living legend! The years I have watched you and the joy you have given me. I am so grateful of that:)
Xenogears was one of the few games of that era I easily put over 100 hours into.
Very well said on Xenogears! I couldn't agree more with your points!
Please make Xenosaga HD Collection Monolith Soft!
I'd sooner take a xenogears remake it's a masterpiece Xenosaga is more like fan fiction 😂
I've always wanted to get into this series, but I was so intimidated by the scope of it all that I didn't know if I had time or the will to get through it all. I love RPGs and this series sounds amazing so I might give it a shot.
So glad you made this video, one of my favorite game series which my favorite game, Xenogears, belongs to.
Such a great series. I think I'm only missing Xenosaga 3 because like you, I got kind of bogged down in the series after the second one. Now I would love to go back and revisit the series after hearing how much you enjoyed 3.
Awesome game series ! I need to play the rest of the xeno series
Man, I was just thinking about Xenosaga, this is great!
I really need to pick up X! Such a great series!
Stuff We Play I put 126 hours into the 1st Chronicles on wii. It was exceptional. After about 10 hours of X, I walked away. I couldn’t get into it. I now have the collectors edition of Chronicles 2 and just waiting for having the time to play through it.
Xenogears tied for my #1 favorite game of all time. Great collection.
Best series ever. Especially Xenoblade. Awesome video!
Poor Europe never ever got Xenogears and got only 1 Xenosaga game lol. Wow imagine being a JRPG fan there.
Poor Europe?
Remember Operation Rainfall? ;-)
Kagoo98 and Terranigma
Yeah, and it was Xenosaga 2 too. They added a DVD with like 10 hours of cutscenes from the first game so you could understand the story, but come on, who's gonna watch all that? A re-release of the trilogy would actually be pretty cool and get more people interested in the franchise thanks to Xenoblade's popularity
We in America were almost screwed out of Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower. I remember there being detailed guides informing people how to soft mod their Wiis so that they could import them.
But they were the ones to get Xenoblade before americans
Xenosaga and Xenogears are absolutely my favourite rpg's
I really want remake of all these jrpgs of PS 1, I mean xenogears, legend of dragoon, koudelka, legend of legaia, suikoden 2 will be like dream come true for me
XCX is definitely under appreciated. Took me 180 hours to finish the story lmao and i loved it all
Xenoblade Chronicles X is definitely underrated as hell
The gameplay, exploration, and sidequests in it surpasses both XC1 and XC2.
I remember playing Xenogears in junior high. Me and my brothers were BLOWN away! Good times man good times!
As a long time fan of the Xeno series, especially Xenogears, I wish you would have spent a little more time talking about it. But like you said this isn't a review and Xenogears is bigger than all of us.
But from what you did say about it I can tell you have a deep love, understanding and respect for it. Just from what you said I would enjoy having a conversation with you about it, though we'd likely end up talking about the soundtrack by itself for hours on end. hah
Do you like the Blade games?
What strikes me most is that Xenohears, Xenosaga and Xeboblade had different composers, but its OSTs are practically of the divine level.
Xenogears is my favorite video game of all time and part of one of the greatest and most underrated franchises in gaming history.
Wow I've only ever played final fantasy/DragonQuest games, but since watching you johnny you helped me discover new RPG's/JRPG series Such as Ys and Now Xeno ive gotta go buy these games as soon as i can fantastic.
nice one man! i have nearly evrything u have aswell, only never played the xenosaga. looking forward to that
Xenosaga was like having a game you played between episodes of an anime with a cool card game.
#XenosagaSwitch
@@bobbyphillips1077 how? The story in blade 1 is fantastic.
Ian Hsieh but the battle system is literally the same they just added elements to attacks
@Luka Megurine, true the system is the same technically, but the way it was executed is different. Having to scroll left and right to get to an art vs 2 button press at most (and 1 button most of the time) to get to any art make a difference.
Ian Hsieh I think it takes away from combat, I still think x has the best combat out of the xenoseries
Luka Megurine, well everyone has things that they like and hate. Out of the 3 Xenoblade games, XBX is the one I disliked the most.
Ian Hsieh that's a shame since xcx is basically a celebration of all the xenogames
Yea 20 years later, still trying to wrap my head around xenogears. Played it when I was 13 I think? Still think about that game sometimes to this day.
Never played the Xenosaga series. All I heard about it is that there’s a lot of cutscenes lol. Need to go back and finish Xenogears.
Just finished Xenogears for the first time. Resonant Arc has an incredible companion podcast on it.
I grew up on the ps1 but i didnt play xenogears till i was an adult and it completely blew me away. Kinda bitter sweet about this video because i would really like to get the hcg review but oh well
