The problem with the Master System is it didn't have many RPGs. But among the few ones it did have are Phantasy Star, Ultima 4 and the orignal Ys 1 & 2. The Ys-games Johnny mentioned are actually remakes of the Master System games. :-)

"Too many RPGs, not enough time!"
Truer words were never said. Thanks John for another great video! Great picks overall! I am currently on a quest to beat as many console RPGs as I can, been at it for a few years, and keeping a list of it all. I'm on my 114th as of now (SMT: Nocturne....such a PS2 masterpiece!). Making a choice for top RPG per console would kill me. Gotta love 'em!

@@Allidewissink For PS1 I'd have to go with Valkyrie Profile. PSP is an odd beast....90% of RPGs on it are ports from other consoles, and to chose one of them feels wrong somehow? So by default it'd have to be Final Fantasy Crisis Core. But if the whole port thing isn't an issue then, maybe Persona 3 Portable (and yes, there's a port of Valkyrie Profile that I would totally pick....just trying to mix it up a bit here).

Number one RPG of all time, in my opinion, is Chrono Trigger. SNES is arguably the greatest system for rpg's. Playstation 1 is a super close 2nd.

I'm lucky to have gotten the chance to play Skies of Arcadia as a kid. I'm really not sure how it would hold up these days. It was a pretty awesome storyline but the one part that grinded my gears in it was how often you ran into random battles while exploring dungeons. It was very grindy in that regard. Also, I had the Dreamcast version, you needed a VMU, or a special more expensive memory card which I didn't have, in order to find the little moon bits you needed to upgrade the one girl's main weapon. It was kinda annoying because like, I feel like she could have been so much better if I had a VMU, but I never did, so I never got the chance to really optimize her. Other than those two things it was a great.

      GBA Golden Sun

    • @racerxgundam
      @racerxgundam 8 лет назад +1

GBA: golden suns are the obvious choice for their exclusivity..superstar saga is great too. great ports of final fantasy games. while in fairness, its a botched port i still liked tales of phantasia for it. FFT advance was every bit as good as FFT in the gameplay department. i feel that GBA has better strategy/tactic games (super robot tensei, tactics ogre, advance wars, etc etc) than jrpgs.
DS: dragon quest games got lots of love on this. Shin megami tensei got some joints in there...but my fav two are super robot tensei OG and the world ends with you. You might like super robot as its not really a tactics game as previous entries were, and plays almost like a 2d fighter. one of the most original battle mechanics i can think of. The other is The world ends with you. its hands down the best game on the system IMHO and it makes the BEST USES of dual touchscreens i can think of. Sonic's rpg is criminally underrated.
      i still dont got a 3ds :-X
i would say that the vita and psp's are worth it alone for the selection of QUALITY jrpg's but in your case that might not be a ringing endorsement. Tho, the psvita > psp for persona 4 golden alone (many of the better psp rpg's are available on other systems, while golden is exclusive), you might like the psp more since it has a surprising number of high end shooters (which cost an organ if you try to get them elsewhere) and lots of 2.5 action platformers.
plus there is the whole ability to hack a psp too ;-)

In my opinion, FF9 is better than FF7. It's mainly because I like the fantasy world better than the more modern, dying world we see in 7. As simple as it to use, I've never been a huge fan of the materia system. The ability to turn cloud into an absolute powerhouse by giving him a few summon material is cool, but I'd rather have a dedicated mage character, like Vivi in 9.
Ultimately, it's a matter of opinion though, this is my two cents.

Your loathing of Double Dungeons has been clearly articulated over the years, Johnny, but I gotta say, I really dig that game! Admittedly the pickings are pretty slim regarding TG16 RPGs on HuCard, but I might go as far as to say it's my favourite. Neutopia I & II are definitely cool, but in all honesty I'd rather listen to their soundtracks than actually sit down and play them in the modern day. Cheers for the great Sunday upload :)

It was actually a very ambitious and impressive FULLY VOICED RPG and we didn't have much of that in 1991!
It's not the easiest game to play, but at least now there are FAQs and help out there, back in 1991 I had to draw out maps and write down pages and pages worth to help out. Very fun back then, not sure how well it holds up too be honest.

Phantasy Star online was really nostalgic back in its release, I played it on xbox and PC, Xbox the classic one with my kid brother and his friend it was 4 player offline, playing online was a bit hard to pull off back then for us.
on PC a few years later managed to get internet connection and played it online, its a good game, shame about the sequels 3+ episode 1 and 2 was just so nostalgic to play through cause of its music and amount of items you can collect and growing your pet mag which could transform into many things. Good stuff

I ordered my Phantasy Star from Sears for $80+ because there was only one store that sold Master System games where I lived, and Phantasy Star was not a game they brought in. I bought it because I saw a commercial and saw a dragon and was blown away how cool it looked.
This was before I had my Nes. So it was my first RPG video game EVER! Needless to say I was forever grateful that I got to experience Phantasy Star from the beginning. I had no idea a game could be played where your character gains levels, and you explore an open world and discover weapons, characters, NEW PLANETS!!!!...I made maps with graph paper and developed the love for grinding and getting stronger.
Even though I was thrown into a game that had turn based combat, something I never knew of at that point. All I knew of at that point was your standard arcade style gameplay, with levels, lives, high scores etc.
I got into the RPG formula immediately because of Phantasy Star, and never looked back.

Skies of Arcadia is probably the most under recognized RPG ever it was so good. It had an open world element, a town building element and just good old turn based RPG stuff. If I remember correctly they were one of if not the first games to have simultaneous battles going on at the same time. Not huge now but in 99-00 it was pretty cool. you would be having a regular fight and a airship fight at the same time.
