I'm lucky to have gotten the chance to play Skies of Arcadia as a kid. I'm really not sure how it would hold up these days. It was a pretty awesome storyline but the one part that grinded my gears in it was how often you ran into random battles while exploring dungeons. It was very grindy in that regard. Sony Online Entertainment dropped the ball so hard with EverQuest Online Adventures on PS2. So many people never even heard about it, but it was incredible for the time!
I have to say well done for having the guts to post a video about RPG's and or JRPG's on these systems cause there's so many I wouldn't know where to start to pick a favourite there;s just too many.
I'm glad you feel Final Fantasy VII for PSX. That is one of my favorite RPG's in general! Sephiroth, I still feel to this day, was one of my favorite Antagonists ever! Hopefully the re-make, if it ever comes out, lives up to the hype!!!
This is such a mammoth list. Powerhouses from each great console! You said it “too many RPGs, not enough time”. I’ve spent countless hours on FFVII and Chrono Trigger, but even more than any other on Final Fantasy Tactics. Love this channel for all the content, especially on things that I’ve been missing out on over the years. ❤️
I liked Suikoden 2 as well, but feel the War battles you got into in 1 were better. Recruiting people in one was more attainable as well. Due to the fact in 2, I believe some were timed and you possibly could not get everybody if that struck your fancy...
my easiest choice for PS1 would be Star Ocean: The Second Story. Simply a masterpiece by Enix before they bought squaresoft. Endless leveling awesome character/story. Crafting, Free roaming battle, and the MUSIC! If you haven't played this game you missed out a lot. second choice would be ff7 tho for sure.
Loved that one! Second evolution is an amazing update for it, all 80+ endings and 90% of the main game along with a good chunk of the private actions are fully voiced. Anime cutscenes for important parts of the game, an updated combat system and graphics, it's ridiculous that this game is still stuck on the psp! This should be on the ps4/pc as a downloadable game.
Awesome video idea. Here's my list (only consoles I've played and whose life-cycles have more or less ended): - SNES: Final Fantasy VI - Genesis: Phantasy Star 4 - PS1: Final Fantasy IX - N64: Nothing really, unless you count Zelda as an RPG (haven't played Paper Mario) - PS2: Final Fantassy X - GC: Baten Kaitos - Xbox: Knights of the Old Republic - PS3: Mass Effect 2 or Demon's Souls (if you want to count either an RPG) - Wii: The Last Story - X360: Lost Odyssey - GB/C: Pokemon Red/Blue (or yellow) - GBA: Fire Emblem - DS: Chrono Trigger
Man, those were the days...as someone who is 41, I love your enthusiasm, those were the days, simpler times for sure...and a lot more fun too... growing old sucks
Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion is my all time favorite RPG. I rented it one weekend because I couldn't find anything else to get. It blew my mind because I didn't know video games could be like that. I easily have put over 1000 hours into that game, and I'm currently replaying on PC with settings maxed out and difficulty way up.
Skies of Arcadia: The game where your most epic "limit break action" is a knights of the round-style attack that you can customize by finding pirate crew members in the game world and picking which ones you want active. That game is gem.
So glad you mentioned Dragon Warrior 4 and Lunar Silver Star. Those games were epic, i was so absorbed and I had so much fun playing them. And they’ve kind of been lost to time, forgotten about. Another great RPG on Sega CD that I had so much fun playing was Vai, another title lost to time.
In my opinion, FF9 is better than FF7. It's mainly because I like the fantasy world better than the more modern, dying world we see in 7. As simple as it to use, I've never been a huge fan of the materia system. The ability to turn cloud into an absolute powerhouse by giving him a few summon material is cool, but I'd rather have a dedicated mage character, like Vivi in 9. Ultimately, it's a matter of opinion though, this is my two cents.
Your loathing of Double Dungeons has been clearly articulated over the years, Johnny, but I gotta say, I really dig that game! Admittedly the pickings are pretty slim regarding TG16 RPGs on HuCard, but I might go as far as to say it's my favourite. Neutopia I & II are definitely cool, but in all honesty I'd rather listen to their soundtracks than actually sit down and play them in the modern day. Cheers for the great Sunday upload :)
Thank you for this channel. Brings me back to when times were simpler for me and for all of us. I love how you get so excited about this stuff. I'm having a really bad year and this has brought me back to gaming so that I have something to look forward to. Thanks

So much of childhood in this video... Most of my teens were spent on Panzer Dragoon Saga, skies of arcadia, FFX along with Grandia 2, Shining Force 3, Shining The Holy Ark, dragon quest 8....
Suikoden 2 goes down as one of my all time favorites. The story was so good. It was the first time i ever got like emotionally invested in the characters of a game.
Although Im a PS1 kid, I've got to go with the SNES here. For me, that is the true golden age of RPGs, and if we dig through the Super Famicom exclusives... WOW. Great video my friend ,) A big hug for you from Portugal.
I'm jealous of your nostalgic stories you got to see video games go from kids toys into a billion dollar industry, 8 bit to 3D, Nintendo Sega and PlayStation.
Good video (even if it has a bit too much Final Fantasy, but even you admit that's nostalgia), but man, where is the love for handhelds? You had great stuff like Mario and Luigi and Golden Sun for the GBA. The DS has a GIGANTIC RPG library. And the PSP and Vita have some great ones, including Ys games.

The Philips CD-i actually had an incredible RPG and I would put it against any other system of the time.... LASER LORDS. It was actually a very ambitious and impressive FULLY VOICED RPG and we didn't have much of that in 1991! It's not the easiest game to play, but at least now there are FAQs and help out there, back in 1991 I had to draw out maps and write down pages and pages worth to help out. Very fun back then, not sure how well it holds up too be honest.
I wasn’t really into RPGs as a kid. But I remember my buddy bringing the Strategy guide for Final Fantasy 10 everyday to school and couldent stop talking about the game.
Phantasy Star online was really nostalgic back in its release, I played it on xbox and PC, Xbox the classic one with my kid brother and his friend it was 4 player offline, playing online was a bit hard to pull off back then for us. on PC a few years later managed to get internet connection and played it online, its a good game, shame about the sequels 3+ episode 1 and 2 was just so nostalgic to play through cause of its music and amount of items you can collect and growing your pet mag which could transform into many things. Good stuff
Please create a video of the Top 20 RPG Games Available on the PS-Vita. There are many PS1 & PSP and a few PS2 available digitally in addition to those created for the PS-Vita. I enjoy your delivery and am interested in many of your recommendations. The one thing I'd appreciated from you standard points for games in your RPG presentations is Co-op and on-line features. I spend time gaming with my kids using Ad-hoc Co-op between PSP, PS-TV and PS-Vita systems . Again, thank you for the advice.
I ordered my Phantasy Star from Sears for $80+ because there was only one store that sold Master System games where I lived, and Phantasy Star was not a game they brought in. I bought it because I saw a commercial and saw a dragon and was blown away how cool it looked. This was before I had my Nes. So it was my first RPG video game EVER! Needless to say I was forever grateful that I got to experience Phantasy Star from the beginning. I had no idea a game could be played where your character gains levels, and you explore an open world and discover weapons, characters, NEW PLANETS!!!!...I made maps with graph paper and developed the love for grinding and getting stronger. Even though I was thrown into a game that had turn based combat, something I never knew of at that point. All I knew of at that point was your standard arcade style gameplay, with levels, lives, high scores etc. I got into the RPG formula immediately because of Phantasy Star, and never looked back.
Really great channel and loved enthusiasm! Maybe in Maybe in future videos you could show brief clips of the games? I played most of them but it would be cool to see some some of the ones I hadn't played.
Yea I have that skies of Acadia and its good, its out on Nintendo game cube also known as skies of Acadia legends, I have both cause I thought it was like continues from the Dreamcast version but sadly at home I find out its the same, the graphics do look slightly better on game cube so it seems to me so ya at least I can play the game on the 2 consoles I own lol
I love Kotor 1&2. I like how it's 2017 and we still haven't recaptured the magic of those star wars RPG. It's one of those concepts you think they would pump out as much as a yearly franchise yet it's such a rarity in gaming. Boogles my mind how star wars in RPG is so hard to do.
I'm looking at a listing of phantasy star for the master system on eBay and it's the only copy I'm seeing on the app that says "battery backup" on the front, why is this ?is it a repro or later version ?
I remember watching my friend try to complete all the quests in Skyrim on his PS3 - it came to a hilarious crawl due to the amount of items he collected. Still managed to complete it!
I remember Skies of Arcadia. I loved it, and beat it on a Sunday, taking about 10 hours to beat the last boss, it was so long. I even got the Gamecube remake which had more content, but was an odd alteration. They weakened the bosses and toughened up the random enemies. Grandia 2 will always be my ace on the Dreamcast. Tear jerking memories there.
Some favorites of mine that were not mentioned: Snes- Breath of Fire PS1-Breath of Fire 3 Gamecube- Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. PS3- Ni No Kuni Dreamcast- Evolution
Speaking of Dragon Warrior 4 and its premise, the Dragon Quest creators have said that apparently 11 is going to be like that too. I HOPE it'll be a chapter like thing, where you play as your separate party members and their back stories, and then have it all come together at the end
Skies of Arcadia is probably the most under recognized RPG ever it was so good. It had an open world element, a town building element and just good old turn based RPG stuff. If I remember correctly they were one of if not the first games to have simultaneous battles going on at the same time. Not huge now but in 99-00 it was pretty cool. you would be having a regular fight and a airship fight at the same time.

Id love it id they did. Its been 15 years since it was first released in japan. We could use an HD collection
Sony Online Entertainment dropped the ball so hard with EverQuest Online Adventures on PS2. So many people never even heard about it, but it was incredible for the time!
Shining Force 2 for the Sega Genesis.
agreed
Suikoden 2 was my favorite PS1 rpg. =p
Same here, I remember cooking and trying to win the baking prize... I have all the ones for the PS2 but never got into them like 1 & 2...
Yeah the cook off minigame was fun. =pAnd out of the PS2 games I did really love Suikoden V.
I knew someone would mention this game before me. lol
Me too love 1 and 2
I liked Suikoden 2 as well, but feel the War battles you got into in 1 were better. Recruiting people in one was more attainable as well. Due to the fact in 2, I believe some were timed and you possibly could not get everybody if that struck your fancy...
Even the Jaguar got a mention, yay! The MD/CD power base converter set up always looks good by the way
my easiest choice for PS1 would be Star Ocean: The Second Story. Simply a masterpiece by Enix before they bought squaresoft. Endless leveling awesome character/story. Crafting, Free roaming battle, and the MUSIC! If you haven't played this game you missed out a lot. second choice would be ff7 tho for sure.
Max Nacht the pre rendered backgrounds were really good in that game
Loved that one! Second evolution is an amazing update for it, all 80+ endings and 90% of the main game along with a good chunk of the private actions are fully voiced. Anime cutscenes for important parts of the game, an updated combat system and graphics, it's ridiculous that this game is still stuck on the psp! This should be on the ps4/pc as a downloadable game.
There was no buyout it was a merger..
So glad to hear your enjoyment of Lost Odyssey on XB360. One of my personal favorites on that system!
Awesome video idea. Here's my list (only consoles I've played and whose life-cycles have more or less ended):
- SNES: Final Fantasy VI
- Genesis: Phantasy Star 4
- PS1: Final Fantasy IX
- N64: Nothing really, unless you count Zelda as an RPG (haven't played Paper Mario)
- PS2: Final Fantassy X
- GC: Baten Kaitos
- Xbox: Knights of the Old Republic
- PS3: Mass Effect 2 or Demon's Souls (if you want to count either an RPG)
- Wii: The Last Story
- X360: Lost Odyssey
- GB/C: Pokemon Red/Blue (or yellow)
- GBA: Fire Emblem
- DS: Chrono Trigger
ZGoten omg you have the same taste o_o, 95% of my fav rpgs are here.
ZGoten Wii has to be Xenoblade Chronicles
ZGoten funny how you put Chrono Trigger for DS but not SNES
Chrono Trigger > FF6
What about Ni no Kuni or Tales of Xillia?
Grandia II's battle system enthralled me. It was so novel at the time and it looked and sounded great on the Dreamcast.
shinging force 1 & 2 for the Sega genesis! my favorite RPGs of all time!!
This guy picked good RPGs and left great ones out
@@cw3598 was his favorivte
Fuck yeah man. Shining force 2 was the greatest of all time!!!!
@@davethomas543 Shining force 3 is so much better though.
It was mind blowing when I first played it on the 360.
Skies of Arcadia:
The game where your most epic "limit break action" is a knights of the round-style attack that you can customize by finding pirate crew members in the game world and picking which ones you want active.
That game is gem.
i just started paper mario on gamecube this morning :). had never played it. i am enjoying it thus far :)
That game is actually amazing! Best RPG on the system, IMO.
no complaits so far enjoying it.
love that game to bits
So glad you mentioned Dragon Warrior 4 and Lunar Silver Star. Those games were epic, i was so absorbed and I had so much fun playing them. And they’ve kind of been lost to time, forgotten about. Another great RPG on Sega CD that I had so much fun playing was Vai, another title lost to time.
Nice! Can you make one for portable systems? I really like these kind of videos
Surprised he didn't say Chrono Trigger for the SNES's entry.
Earthbound & Chrono Trigger on SNES
I agree!
Two very good games
Final Fantasy VII is just special. Words cannot describe how amazing it really is. It's just behind Kingdom Hearts II as my all time favorite game.
I agree with you! I'd go with FF12 over FF10 on ps2 also.
I pregerred the story and artstyle of 8 over 7 and 9
Your loathing of Double Dungeons has been clearly articulated over the years, Johnny, but I gotta say, I really dig that game!
I would say my all time favorite RPG is Final Fantasy II USA (Final Fantasy 4 in Japan) but damn man there's so many good ones to play.
Most nastalegic for me
Thank you for this channel. Brings me back to when times were simpler for me and for all of us. I love how you get so excited about this stuff. I'm having a really bad year and this has brought me back to gaming so that I have something to look forward to. Thanks
Ps3: ni no kuni
Brent D Groenendijk I love Skyrim, but I have to agree. Going to get a PS4, again, just for No No Kuni 2.
FFX HD
@@kevinforbes6391 One caveat: the sequel is a good game, but nowhere close to the first one.
Starsailor Agreed. What little I played of 2, I just couldn’t get into as much. Now I’ve got such a backlog of games, and no time, haha.
@@kevinforbes6391 2 is not bad, but it doesnt have the great story, characters and music of the first one. Also gameplay-wise is pretty much a completely different game.
So much of childhood in this video... Most of my teens were spent on Panzer Dragoon Saga, skies of arcadia, FFX along with Grandia 2, Shining Force 3, Shining The Holy Ark, dragon quest 8....
No Suikoden II? :<
But yay for Lost Odyssey!
I know!! Suikoden II is amazing!! And I wasn't able to get myself a reasonably priced (physical) copy until 2016! I love it!
WOW.
Great video my friend ,)
A big hug for you from Portugal.
waiting for your episodes on sunday morning are likenwaiting for saturday morning cartoons. i have my cereal and all. lol
yeah, its always great to wake up to a new HCG video
That is awesome! I need to grab some Froot Loops real quick.
So glad you mentioned Neutopia I & II, terribly underrated classics
Shining Force gts my vote for the Genesis
I'm jealous of your nostalgic stories you got to see video games go from kids toys into a billion dollar industry, 8 bit to 3D, Nintendo Sega and PlayStation.
how you gonna pick skyrim over demons souls or dark souls?
Hi Johnny! Long time commenter, first time watcher. Which is better, Xenogears or Beyond the Beyond? k thx bye!
Yep, I was looking forward to hearing his handheld picks.
NES- Dragon Warrior 4

Gameboy- Great Greed

Shining Force I & II are the best rpgs on the Genesis
"Silver" for the Dreamcast is a SERIOUSLY underrated RPG that more people should try/talk about. I LOVED it.
Shemnue dreamcast was the best rpg on the system
Nice episode. Going through the first Final Fantasy once again myself and the nostalgia is hitting me hard. Your episode brought back some of that nostalgia for some of the '90s consoles as well. I remember when the JRPG genre was completely new and fresh. What a time..
NES: Faxanadu
SNES: Super Mario RPG
Genesis: Shining Force 2
Playstation: Final Fantasy 7/Tactics
Ff tactics is my favriot ff
I agree with most of your pics. some honorable mentions for me are:
PS1 - Azure Dreams
PS2 - Dark Cloud 2, Rogue Galaxy
Xb360 - Mass Effects, Dragon Age
Wii - Monster Hunter Tri
Great video!
ew skyrim over dark souls ;)
Indeimaus INDEIMAUS!!!!
skyrim is way better than gay ass dark souls and elder scrolls been round since 1993 so puit that in ur pipe n smoke it
I would say Demon's Souls.
not to mention the story is absolutely haunting! Demon's souls was certainly my favourite rpg for the ps3 dumped hours into it and loved playing coop. Skyrim always looked like a potato to me
Devan Fava then u dont know what a real rpg is dipshit or game peroid lol new age gamers so fucking dumb
Chrono Trigger was my favorite on the Super NES
Respect the list, but.... Skyrim ? Over Ni No Kuni ?
And even over Dragon's Dogma?
I'd take Dragon's Dogma over Skyrim at not even the bat of an eye.
Yeah Skyrim was awful on PS3 with lot of bugs, glitches, hufe FPS issues and had worse graphics of all versions.
Ff12 for PS2 was so amazing I still play it today! I can't wait for the Zodiac Age!
I've just started watching this ... if it's not Dragon Quest 8 on the PS2 you just have to be ... WRONG ! UPDATE: ... duuuuuuudeeeeeeeeee ! no Dragon Quest 8.
My picks:
NES - Final Fantasy 1 and Dragon Warrior 1
SNES - Chrono Trigger, Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, Illusion of Gaia, Tales of Phantasia
Sega Genesis - Shining Force 1 & 2
Sega CD Lunar 1 & 2, Shining Force CD, Dark wizard

GameCube - Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia Legends
360 - Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Fallout 3, Dust: An Elysian Tail
PS3 Ni No Kuni, Tales of Xillia, Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Wii - XenoBlade Chronicles ,The Last Story.
Wii U - XenoBlade Chronicles X, Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Amazing list!
You forgot every handheld.
And Trails of Cold Steel for that matter.
I got it for the ps3. Heard great things
Trails sucks
Im so glad you also gave a mention to the persona series
FFX over Persona 4? Holy fuck Johnny.
Both are god tier PS2 titles, but I agree that FFX edges out P4 JUST BY A LITTLE. P4 is one of my favorites of all time, so is FFX though >.>
So glad you mentioned Panzer Dragoon Saga, my favorite game ever.
you forgot ps4 and portables
I guess he didn't include PS4 or XBox One because they still have a future
The Philips CD-i actually had an incredible RPG and I would put it against any other system of the time....
LASER LORDS.
It was actually a very ambitious and impressive FULLY VOICED RPG and we didn't have much of that in 1991!
It's not the easiest game to play, but at least now there are FAQs and help out there, back in 1991 I had to draw out maps and write down pages and pages worth to help out. Very fun back then, not sure how well it holds up too be honest.
I think you could have chosed tales of symphonia on gamecube, baten kaitos, Paper mario just to not hose the same has the dreamcast XD
I wasn’t really into RPGs as a kid. But I remember my buddy bringing the Strategy guide for Final Fantasy 10 everyday to school and couldent stop talking about the game.
Well on the n64 the best rpg is ogre battle cuz quest sucked.
Ivan Ramos could you not sorta say zelda tho?
Ternaldius does Zelda counts as an RPG? I mean the new one does have a some RPG elements to it.
Joel Sola López lol Johnnyboii has a vid on it hahaha
Nobody ever remembers Aidyn Chronicles. Not a great game, admittedly, but it was an interesting shot at an RPG. Certainly better than Quest.
Zelda's genre is 'Action Adventure'
Phantasy Star online was really nostalgic back in its release, I played it on xbox and PC, Xbox the classic one with my kid brother and his friend it was 4 player offline, playing online was a bit hard to pull off back then for us.
on PC a few years later managed to get internet connection and played it online, its a good game, shame about the sequels 3+ episode 1 and 2 was just so nostalgic to play through cause of its music and amount of items you can collect and growing your pet mag which could transform into many things. Good stuff
Awesome list. I may go back and play some of these classic games.
What about handhelds?
I've just found your channel in u reminded me of me and my childhood except you have wayyyy more stuff lol thanx man
I love Kotor 1&2. I like how it's 2017 and we still haven't recaptured the magic of those star wars RPG. It's one of those concepts you think they would pump out as much as a yearly franchise yet it's such a rarity in gaming. Boogles my mind how star wars in RPG is so hard to do.
No handhelds or tatical RPGs?
Seen a lot of your vids. Fantastic stuff didn't realise I hadn't even subbed !
lol , that Sega 32X segment was epic.
Some favorites of mine that were not mentioned:
Snes- Breath of Fire
PS1-Breath of Fire 3
Gamecube- Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
PS3- Ni No Kuni
Dreamcast- Evolution
Speaking of Dragon Warrior 4 and its premise, the Dragon Quest creators have said that apparently 11 is going to be like that too. I HOPE it'll be a chapter like thing, where you play as your separate party members and their back stories, and then have it all come together at the end
Fun list, as it is all about sharing the love for the rpg genre :). Some fun titles, some I had forgotten about til seeing you discuss them again :).
thumbs up for choosing the best ff when mentioning the Snes! its even better than the ffs we have today...
Thank you. I've missed so many great RPG games.
