    Located below street level but with a Sydney skyline view, Brad Swartz found a uniquely challenging project in this 49sqm Basement Apartment. Limited by its heritage status he approached the project with a light touch, favouring freestanding furniture over built-in storage, elevating the kitchen, and extending it’s fixtures into custom cabinetry in the apartments hallway. These floating elements alongside the apartment's lighter palette allow light to flow freely throughout the home, lending a bright feel to what would be an otherwise dim space.

      While it would be fantastic to see that, I can understand logistically while it may not be feasible. The apartment may not be available, they may not be able to keep the look of the apartment the same for the whole day, the architect, designer, or the owner may not be available for day and night times. But if it could be done, you're right, seeing it at night would be so nice.

      I came here specifically looking for a comment like this. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to reach the front door you descend two flights of darkly lit stairs down from street level, but walk into an apartment flooded with light with an elevated skyline view. HOW is this possible?! 😄

My apartment has a wall separating the living and kitchen areas and even though it has a large opening (I call it my “To Go window”) it still makes the entire area seem so much smaller. It would be wonderful if I could take it out. Open areas are easier to breathe in. And the legs under the counters was indeed a stroke of genius. This guy understands space and design.

    • @faeinthebay

      @@Lolidropz to me, the biggest issue is that you have to do a lot of walking back and forth. If you're carrying something to/from the oven, the hallway is blocked until you're back in the kitchen. Same with the refrigerator. It's also unlike most kitchens where there are counters in front and behind you, so you can use one side for cooking/storage (cupboards, oven, refrigerator) and the other side as counter space to prep foods and hold them.

    • @Lolidropz
      @Lolidropz 3 года назад +5

      @@faeinthebay Thanks for replying! I understand your point, and taking a closer look, it would be more preferable to have a countertop right at the fridge. Now I'm thinking of how making a quick sandwhich would take more time. We aren't given a good look at the appliance cupboard, so I'm not sure how easy it would be to prepare quick snacks or a cup of coffee etc. From a personal point and living with a compact kitchen, even the highest shelves are used daily by climbing a kitchen stool. I guess in this apartment that same effort is walking back and forth between appliances, fridge and the countertops. But I think even if you cook a lot, it would be easy to adapt to this kitchen.

    How is this "underground", when it has a big terrasse and a view into the city??
    UPD: I understand how it works, but from the architectural and interior design point of view, this is not a challenging underground flat. It has very high ceilings, huge windows and a lot of light.

    Quite beautiful. This is a small space but with no compromises. I think the kitchen was beautifully handled, tucking the fridge and oven just a few feet away. Splendid. I would not put a blue sofa & rug in my apartment; never ever... until I saw this. It's perfect. The fabric texture on the sofa is pure class. Small details maximize space and lend cohesion like the space under the kitchen and the picture frame that matches the color of the table & chairs. The grade out the back must be considerable. I wish we had been shown that in order to appreciate how the lofty view was conjured up from the basement entrance. Kudos.
