- Set inside the heritage-listed Grand Hotel building in the Melbourne CBD, the aptly named Small Grand Apartment has been meticulously transformed by the team at tsai Design into an open plan, minimalist space by the use of clever, multi-functional design. The picturesque kitchen blends seamlessly into the living area, containing an 8m wrap around countertop that continues into a cleverly concealed bathroom. In the living area, a custom designed credenza forms both TV cabinet and seating for dining, whilst also supporting a bespoke drop leaf table, convertible between desk and dining table. All of this ensures that the apartment's aesthetic is as clean as possible, while maintaining flexibility.

I agree! I love the architecture, l really do, but l kept on waiting for the cat to appear and "show" the space. When she ran from the bathroom sink area straight through into the kitchen, she showed off the continuous surface so well! LOL!

After we were fooled by the mirror, I love how the cat demonstrated that the bathroom and the kitchen countertop are not another optical illusion by literally walking through it
🤣😅 My gosh, the mirror in the bedroom had me fooled until he mentioned it. It looked like a tunnel opening up into another room. I was wrecking my brain wondering why the floor plan didn't mention the tunnel and extra space lol. Absolutely gorgeous home, the kitchen is breathtaking. 🥰

the bathroom is so seamless. i gasped when the cat jumps to the counter and navigates to the sink. some work of art right there
from a cinematography perspective, it was the perfect way to show the flow of the space. I don't know if they prompted the cat to do that somehow or if it was just a happy accident, but WOW. the voice over didn't even have to say anything. the cat did all the work.
Nice stealth kitchen. I would try to find some stealth option for the foset.

That full length mirror that ended up being a murphy bed really got me. I didn't even realize it was the living room that was being reflected lol
It certainly made the place look so spacious. I loved the warmth from all the wood. Also it is unusual to see an actual laundry sink with internal laundries. Most just have the washer and dryer.

This is the most beautiful space I have ever seen in my life!! As a designer, I’m so insanely loving every detail of this space. Fits the clients needs, has meaning, minimal and the bathroom to kitchen transition, the acoustic consideration for the bedroom, the historic arch and contrast of white to warm wood tone for the bedroom/closet, the simple illusions with the mirror Murphy bed and the taller toe clearance underneath the cabinets to create the floating aesthetic….I can’t. This is stunning!!
No. He has basically copied to a ‘t’ Melbournes failed 1960’s Housing Commission towers with communal laundry and open hallways in the 21st century. And they failed. This is hilarious the way he speaks as if he has ‘created’ these. These are dog boxes for the poor and will end up exactly like the 1960’s version down you dead plants and concrete used everywhere.

No doubt THE most beautiful use of 50sqm i've ever seen. Obsessed with the kitchen being hidden in plain sight, the countertops leading into the bathroom, the secret door, the bedroom nook which feels like an entirely different space. I need this architect to design my future home because this was absolutely perfect in every way

I agree with you. Once you start frying, you'll want to get rid of the artwork. I like how beautiful and purposeful this apartment is but there are things that will not fit my lifestyle like the hidden fridge and small kitchen sink.

@@nunusyaz there are actually stoves with a very strong ventilatin hidden under a flap behind the the cooking top. You flip is open and it sucks in in all vapor pritty good.

Me and my wife did an inspection in this building a couple of years ago (I didn't get it tho :D) , so we know the initial lay out of the apartment, and I really love this transformation.
That cat stole the show. He/she walked the entire surface of the kitchen/bathroom tabletop just as the narrator talked about the continuous design. 😅

This is one of the most mind blowing designs I’ve seen on this channel, the invisible kitchen, the infinity bedroom nook, the bathroom’s seamless flow into the kitchen’s vanity
I just came from the “futuristic” apartment in Hong Kong, which was the apartment I least liked out of all the ones I’ve seen on this channel. Then I came here and this, this is the most beautiful apartment I have seen on this channel. It truly is exceptional and feels miles huger than the almost 700sqft futuristic apartment. Bravo!!!
This is headed straight to the Never Too Small hall of fame. I've seen some beauties but never one with a combo of such innovative design and brilliant, elegant execution. Every line is considered.

I agree with the seamless integration of the bed behind the mirror. The only thing that bugs me slightly is how tricky it'll be to replace the bed sheet. In saying that, it's a minor thing to the work the architect has done

Three years after being published this is still one of my very favoutites. The kitchen is just beautiful. And the cat presentong the elongated benchtop is a best presenter ever.
I was blown away by the seamless entrance to the bathroom and the almost magical drawing of the bed. Holy fuck, what an elegant and subtle project this is. My honest congratulations on this space, truly beautiful.
I would live in a closet simply to be able to walk into that gorgeous building every day and see that staircase.

The high ceilings are the ULTIMATE luxury - and in this apartment this element alone is what makes this space the elegant vision that it is.
It’s gorgeous, I just feel like for one person this is like a normal size. Like I wouldn’t even call it small honestly if it’s just one person living there with cats
Totally - it feels really spacious and minimal. I live in a 38sqm flat, which is nice enough and has good bones (I also have Corian countertops in my kitchen! Though a mid grey colour instead of that lovely marble), along with some challenges with the layout (mostly with where to fit a full sized fridge-freezer when the kitchen was designed for a tiny integrated under-counter one, plus incorporating a home office into the living area without it looking out of place), so 50sqm would definitely be nice!

I can't decide which I like more. They are both so very different, yet so perfectly executed.

This is my favourite NTS apartment. Every couple of months I return here to imagine myself living here. The right mix of elegance, functionality and minimalism. To say I’m in love is an understatement.

This is one of my favourite of the apartment designs I've seen on this channel. I love how clean and clear the lines are. It just feels luxurious. The kitchen is there if you want to use it, but otherwise simply looks elegant. I never would have thought to see the words "elegant" and "kitchen" in the same sentence used by me! Lovely.
i just clapped at every reveal. the white cooktop, the mirror, the cat walking the counter were my faves. GENIUS!
If I had to live in a studio apartment, then THIS is the studio apartment that I'm choosing! Loved the simplified elegance, loved the contrast between living and sleeping areas and I genuinely had no idea where the bed was gonna pull down from haha, bravo!

I think it's the lighting that really makes this apartment. The lighting they picked for the bedroom makes it so cosy and well-lit, and the lighting in the kitchen makes it look like artwork.

I legitimately thought the bedroom was at the end of a long corridor. Then you mentioned there was a full size mirror! That nook looks very cozy. Fantastic use of timber.

Genuinely brilliant design, use of space and creation of home - the kitchen disappears, the pictures are hung elegantly, the wrap into the bathroom surface great, the bedroom in wood with the uplighting fantastic, the first time I don't hate a Murphy bed. mostly cos you could have it down most of the time. AND a DECENT SIZED TABLE. Chapeau!

that kitchen is supercool. a fully functioning kitchen without dominating the space. and the way the bench top flows into the bathroom is just genius.
Absolutely stylish. I love the timber arch ceiling in the walkthrough space, definitely the best feature. The bathroom door is quirky but cool touch. Also the cat running around is so adorable, truly makes the space looking more alive and homely 🤭

I love the kitty interaction in this video. They do live there too! Lol Love the design, layout and the secret bathroom!! My only problem with it is the bed. I’m too old to crawl into bed that way, if I have to get out in an emergency or go to the bathroom, I’m in trouble. Otherwise, if were me and my kitty it is perfect, beautiful and all around wonderful!! Great job designers.
