  • In redesigning this Chippendale warehouse apartment Folk Studio, and interior designer Mariah Burton, stripped the space bare and started from scratch. With the aim of giving the owners a first home they could grow into, she draw inspiration from the things they loved. Extending the kitchen out into a workspace so they could work from home, and shaping a large sofa around the protruding walls. Everything in the home carries a sense of purpose and function from the muted palette to the lovingly restored shutters and doors.

    So, from watching many of these videos, I have learnt that to create lovely harmonius small living spaces you need 2 things:

    I really love how the designer kept the internal walls and everything the same and just repaired things that were already in there. Some might say "well, it's not that impressive, all she did was repaint some shutters" but I think we should get out of the mindset that you have to make a renovation a huge project and totally replan the space. The original apartment layout worked here, and simple things like repairing and repainting the shutters are not only economically and environmentally smart decisions, it still contributes to the new look of the apartment - the before and after pictures were so different, even though the bones of the space were the same. In many ways I think it is harder to design within existing parameters of internal walls than to knock everything down and start from scratch, but Mariah Burton has done a great job with this space.

    One of the big compromises here is the workspace. For one, kitchen counters are pretty far off from the ideal height of a desk in terms of ergonomics. The second thing is the melding of the work zone with the sofa hangout area, which is not ideal. The apartment is a really beautiful space though.

    • @teamene9034
      @teamene9034 3 года назад +20

      I think if they had a tv, the closeness between workspace and living would be a bigger problem than it is - it's looking like they use the sofa as a space enclosed within itself. I suppose most of us see the sofa as one corner of a space which faces the tv area! Plus i imagine they might potentially use that large pc monitor for work, but also to watch films if ever needed

    • @jcquing
      @jcquing 3 года назад +23

      That depends actually. As a tall person I get a lot of back discomfort from working on the usual desk height, while my knees often hit the table underside. Ergonomics isn't necessarily a one size fits all.

    • @Vikinatorn
      @Vikinatorn 3 года назад +8

      @@jcquing True... In the video however is looks like they use a barstool with a footrest to solve the high desk situation. It doesn't have any adjustability, so no extra points for ergonomics. And since you can't reach the ground while sitting there, and it doesn't swivel or roll, it's probably a struggle to get out of too.
      Whether it's a good compromise or not I'd say mostly depends on how much time is spent working there.

      @samia elmi i guess everyone in Paris is on a low quality life lol... most of my friends, who are in their late twenties, cannot afford more than 40 sqm (if you're a couple), and i think some of the flats they live in would really benefit from a nice renovation similar to this one, making it probably a bit more bearable - the thing is, most people rent their flats, and the landlords don't really care about making significant changes because it's so hard to get a decently prized flat in Paris that you take it even if it's in kinda bad shape, and I think it is the case in many other cities in Europe

    Lovely minimalist design, without looking ‘sterile’. I understand that the bathroom was not shown due to it being a second stage renovation, but why was the balcony space omitted? It looks like quite a large space that adds quite a lot of living space to the home. I would have liked to see exactly how it is arranged. It looks as though the balcony is almost entirely closed in, like another room, but without addressing it, there’s no way to tell for sure.
