Located in the small coastal village of Walkerville, 2.5hours south east of Melbourne, architect Imogen Puller has designed a simple beach shack with adaptable spaces, multifunctional furniture and ample storage. Built to withstand the risk of bushfires and seaside corrosion, the exterior is wrapped in non combustible fiber cement sheeting, with rusted metal corten used for the decking. A unique mural on the facade is a nod to the owner’s artist agency. Built to passive house principles; an air tight envelope and high insulation levels in the floors, walls and ceilings, ensure an energy efficient and thermally comfortable home. The interior is a more minimal and calming space with light lime washed ply interior and light grey porcelain tile flooring. In the living come dining area, a custom designed banquette seat for the dining table unfolds to become a double bed, another daybed built neatly tucked under the stairs. The main bedroom is located in the voluminous upstairs space, where a queen storage bed and modular adjustable storage system make for a comfortable and adaptable space.

Given the visual feast that is NTS, I got to say I would love to see some of these places at night. Being able to see how lighting performs when there is no natural light would be appreciated. Additionally, in spaces like this one, the exterior at night has to look really cool. All this probably makes filming more of a chore, but I know I'd appreciate it! Love the videos!
Never knew I needed this but you’re so right!
I’d love that too!!! I feel like we’ve seen it on some videos but I’d love it on all
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
I was about to post the same comment. Especially with this one where they make a point of showing the unique lighting I immediately thought…”I hope they show it at night”.
Spot on!
Looks spacious! Very pleasant vibe.
Love it !
This guide is a good resource of videos, pictures and drawing. It does not have plans, so if that's what you're looking for don't bother with this book. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxLum--iPp9YKZ09j1BMdHaBMLkrGfIbcm What this book does have is a lot of great information on the building of sheds, design ideas, building options, etc. The author goes through the steps to build a foundation, framing, roof, even ideas on internal storage and external finishes. The text is easy to follow and understand. There are many sidebars that give tips and advice which most laymen probably wouldn't have considered. The photographs are great quality too. This is a great book and I'd recommend it highly for anyone needing or interested in building a shed.
So impressed with this one. Intelligent design throughout the house. Hats off to the architect 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
Really thoughtful design! Passive principles, off grid self sufficiency integrated into design and super functional layout. Love the mural! Great job by the architects and builders. And kudos to the clients for their trust and resolve completing it during pandemic.
Another great NTS video! ❤
Thanks so much!
@@nevertoosmall no, truly, thank you! Really appreciate being exposed to projects like this.
Forgot to mention, they've basically future proofed this building by making it climate adaptive from the start. Once they add the solar setup and possibly add active shading in future, it will be comfortable year round and take minimal amount of money to heat, cool, run, maintain, etc. I'm just speculating, but making all the changes in order to achieve all this was probably done at a negligible increase of cost (in the sense that it will pay for itself within the next couple years, even sooner depending on rental income). All new builds should be built to these standards and they should be incentivised (if not mandated) to build this way. Easier said than done. But that's just my two cents.
Thanks again! 💚
External door straight into the bathroom is sooooo good. As is the outdoor shower. It’s these low-cost, practical ideas that give homes true longevity.
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
mmm, I know that part of the world very well. Outdoor shower VERY challenging in winter although I assume it's hot water
@@ThePiestube
My guess is that they only spend hot months there.
I really love this house, but the architects statement at the end of the video about the environment is so fake. "By keeping the house small we limit the impact on the environment. We reduce the materials being used." That is true. But do you know what would have been really environmentally friendly? Not building the house. This is not a House for daily living but for weekends and vacation. A house like that can never be environmentally friendly, because it's unnecessary. No one really needs this house. It's a luxury. I don't blame anyone who has the money to build a house like that, but the architect is trying to greenwash and act like they did something good for the environment by building this house.
You mad
@@greendog6554 nah
I think this is a really good point. In our absolute panic to all of the sudden care about the environment we gobble up any remotely sustainable sounding marketing or ideas. It's really, really crucial that we start recognizing and rejecting the green washing, because it is going to ramp up. Thanks for bringing this up!
This is true. An honest and observant comment.
Lol did you just give an architect the advice not to build?
Love almost everything about this home inside and out, especially the fun mural and amazing deck. To me, the stair railing looks off......more like a soccer net placed at an angle rather than something nautical 🤔. And even in a minimalist environment, I'll never understand a mini fridge in a space where there is more than enough room for a small, full size freezer/fridge.
Soo much space for a fridge but instead just a wall of empty shelves...
I think it's because while you could live in this house permanently, the owners don't intend to. It's just going to be used as a retreat space for them and friends, so the small fridge will most likely be enough for their weekend trips or for a couple of weeks at most.
I would have thought the same but... We live in 3 in a small flat of 60 sqm. In almost 9 years we have changed many things but now that it's time to remodel the kitchen I decided to keep the undercounter fridge. We realized we never missed a full size one. You tend to use everything you have, get creative and well organized to avoid going to the supermarket every three day to restock it.
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
@@carlaorlando4744 There are so many shops right next to where I live it's not a chore to get fresh ingredients, so I don't miss a big fridge either. I don't make special trips to get food, I just do it on the way home.
Jeez every sentence ends with a question mark? It was starting to irritate me? I had to turn the volume down? But the cottage is really pretty.
It's the ugly disturbing music that got me too; push the CC button and turn off the sound: ahhhh...
Why does she end every sentence sounding like she’s asking a question?
I would like to see shade around the verandah to help with passive climate control. I feel like this would heat up very quickly in summer. Otherwise, lovely calming design.
It looks like a really comfortable space. Is it really 30sqm tho? It seems like the footprint of the first floor is 30sqm, but the 2nd floor is at least another 10-15.
yep, it's crazy no one in the comments notices it
I think it’s quite cool how sustainable this home is, but how sustainable is it to build a 2nd beach house that’s only ever used as a 2nd home?
Also known as, a second home.
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
Yeah. Also I find it weird to build a house where there's always a risk of it burning down due to wildfires? That part confused me.
I find it slightly annoying that so many (all?) episodes talk about the environmental reasons for refurbishing smaller places and do such extensive refurbishment but then seem not to tackle insulating walls, airtightness, heat recovery etc. So it was nice to see it here, where it looks like they've gone for such a standard. Although it's a second home like you say so the reduction in energy will be less than a permanently occupied place.
Another one that's nice as a holiday house but I couldn't live there (and tbh would already be annoyed for a holiday house with no proper kitchen appliances and no sofa+TV set up. ) Not sure about the metal deck either - wouldn't it get really hot in the sun?
The external door into the bathroom is a good idea for a beach house though.
I don’t need tv set at all
Looks nice but why not use the kitchen if you have the space? Just install a proper stove and a dishwasher (who actuallys safes water) etc. Also why would you access the bathroom from outdoors if you already have a shower there? And I don't like the stair-rail that is not shaped to fit the staircase. Otherwise a super cosy but still spacious tiny house.
What if is someone using the toilet at that moment?
One of my favourites by far! It's clean, minimalist, efficient, has all the necessities and still retains personality. The architect did a fantastic job.
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
The rolling table is genius! I was already thinking I should have something like that and here it is! Confirmation! This is also one of my favorites and I've been watching tiny house videos since they started! Kudos!! 💕
5:25 Did she really say "volumous"?! 😝
The external mural is fantastic. Would love to stay there.
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
I love EVERYTHING about this house except the stair railing. Visually, it just doesn't integrate and it looks like it was nailed up there as a temporary thing until a real railing could be installed. Just does not work at all.
But everything else is great. I really do like this one.
I love the colour scheme inside..…it's so relaxing !
The mural on the outside walls is amazing!
Love the colorful furnishings, especially for a mental health retreat. Really nice
What’s to keep the rust from the corten deck from tracking into the house?
That is what I found impractical...
so excited every time NTS upload a new video, giving me inspirations how to design my house more efficiently!
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
The design can grow on you; quirky mural is daring. Wonder if it will fade in time.
Can the wheels on the rolling table be locked in place? Otherwise I can envision plates and glasses and contents flying everywhere. That thin rug looks nice but not safe, could lead to bumps forming and tripping over them. I would have used some other material for the staircase "railing" as this looks too intrusive on the light wood colour design.
If there's space for it, why not install a bigger fridge? That would save time and energy to shop for food at shops, which are probably not anywhere near in such an area. There's no mention if one can do laundry there. All in all a place that looks a lot bigger than it is.
This is a lovely, neat and well thought out home. I love the external entry to the bathroom and the outdoor shower. I like the stairs having protection from falls, but not so keen on the black netting, and I don't think the netting is necessary in the bedroom area. Would be awesome to have metal or timber framing instead for an indoor plant climber.
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
Laundry?
My question also.
She raises the pitch of her voice at the end of every stinking sentence, so distracting.
i like the house,, the 'artwork' does not compliment it. sadly these days we call every scribble 'art'
The open outdoor shower facing the neighbours is an... interesting choice.
It would be pretty easy to knock up a screen from Bunnings. 😊
That would just be for rinsing off after coming from the beach. Nothing to see here!
It's just like the showers at the beach so you can wash the salt off and go somewhere. No need to nude up.
Love the videos but it always tickles me to see such beautiful houses with huge space all around and be called Tiny. Granted, the livable area is small, but in Singapore, anyone with a landed property is freaking rich. lol
Enjoyed the two features on Singapore's HDB flats.
Does the decking come off on shoes so it gets dragged inside? Really love the layout of this place.
Sorry but it's like a cheapest hostel. Where is the soul of house?
Houses don't have souls.
Great use of space and I love the thoughtful details throughout. It’s such a calm, beautiful getaway. Well done!
I love EVERYTHING HERE including tucked away induction hot plates. This is another beautiful video from NTS that is highly appreciated. Greetings from Perth.
Building in a 2 burner induction stove top would not have detracted from the esthetic of the counter top and refrigerator and freezer drawes is more efficient. No laundry but this is not a permanent residence, but would have been a nice addition.
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
You could bbq sausages on that deck late January early February.
Imagine returning from the beach for a shower without thongs 😬🔥
Great little pad though, love the mural !
What does one do about heating? Or did I not catch that?
Was that a
pump/air con on the bedroom wall? Also has an HRV.
Me, seeing how they installed their Ikea table legs, and wondering if I did mine the wrong direction: 😒
This is very nice! I’m loving that material was used with thought about the seasons and surrounding environment. And the paintings outside is spectacular! Job well done to the owner and the designers 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
that house are have much personality. -Excuse me if my English is not good; I am still learning. 👋ARG
The rusty metal decking looks good, but will get so hot in Aussie summers especially as there’s no outdoor shade. Otherwise very nice
beautiful home with a lovely connection to nature. seems like there's plenty of space in such a small footprint. not sure how I feel about stepping onto a rusty deck, however
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
One of my favorites for sure. Love the layout and finishes. Well done!
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
The cor-ten deck seems like it would lead to lots of foot print stains.
I wonder if it fades to a less orange-y shade?

Why arnt these materials required in California wildfire zones?
the colors alone, the murals, and how everything feels so light and not cramped. chef's kiss
The rustic deck really gives me anxiety
I rather use more stone or rock in the house. As stone/concrete has a high retendency of cold and heat. Its perfect to keep a room cooler then a wooden room.
The outside is marvelous, it gives the house so much personality. The light inside, spacious and cozy is so tranquil. Love it.
🌏🇦🇺 Seems so Australian! 🐨👍🏼😎✌🏼

humans dont really need massive apartments and houses..
small, functional spaces with modern (necessary) appliances can mk your
life amazing..
I would prefer a bigger, more functional kitchen but otherwise, this is awesome!
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
This is a beautiful home, on so many levels! My favourite being the painted mural, which is exactly what I would do if I designed my own house (although it probably wouldn't look as good), and the gorgeous corten steel deck. I also love that there are two entrances so the outside terrace becomes an extension of the living space, plus you have direct access to the bathroom when you come home from the beach. The color choice of the interior is also really well done as a reflection of the colors from the outside, with the walls mimicking the sand, the couches like the blue sea, yellows like the sun, and a bit of orange just like the deck. Really well done.
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
The idea of having the bathroom accessible directly from the outside is really well thought through!
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
Every beach house needs to have an entrance through a bathroom!
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
i love the interior design, very bright looking but also gives off a warm atmosphere
*LOL...INTERIOR*

Pretty big for a small house
If the fridge was full size then it would be a great house, that's the only detail I can think of to improve.
It's a beach shack, probably used for the weekend.
I like the house but hate the decorations neting looks horrible don’t like table ,like that the sofa turns into bed but don’t like the blue , the bedroom is same thing don’t like the “closet”.
How is this a 300sq ft? It feels as big as my 2000sq ft home. Fantastic work
probably the first floor alone is 30 meters. it's super misleading
the land belongs to the European settlers of the Canberra parliament , get you facts right
If this place has a TV, I would live there in a heartbeat. Haha
What can rich people do with unlimited funds? This. SMH.
I absolutely LOVE the design of this space! However, as the owner of a SoloStove, I couldn't help but watch in horror at the amount of wood that the architect is putting in the fire at 6:26. They didn't show it in the video, but that fire was about to get scary.
Yeah I wondered about the wisdom of having a fire pit in a high risk bush fire area...
@@Tashax405 yep thought that too!
This is a beauty. Phenomenal design.
Could someone explain to me what _passive house principles_ are? ☺️
@@guydw1251 thank you!
This is the first small design that feels like a real livable house.
Having a bathroom with a door is genius. Both for ventilation and since it can double as a mud room. Love it!
why does every sentence she says end on a higher note .. like as she asked a question?
do designer know that there is other wood ? it always looks cheap imo
Wonder how hot the corten steel decking gets? Love the design though
If you cut your foot on the deck would you get tetanus?
Lovely! Functional yet whimsical. I love this one.
My new challenge, watch this in one go without falling asleep
Im personally very much for having an artistic exterior, and not just a boring blank one. While for some reason I do have mixed feelings for the wall art in this house, I really like the idea!
The inside looks nice. I like the combination of the pine and grey tiles. Unfortunately the netting takes away from the aesthetics for me.
Non practical, looks like air bnb promotion
Wow, it looks a lot bigger than 323 sq ft
So much to love! The murals, the dining seat/bed, stair net ( thought it was metal), rolling table, color scheme, bathroom outside entry, corten deck, passive design, lighting, ample storage, daybed under stairs, water retention system. How can they have the firepit in a hazardous area for wildfires? Only certain times of the year? Would worry about guests not being careful about it. Doesn't the steel deck get so hot it burns your feet? TFS
I love this episode. The architect is so inspiring and the way you portrait the space is just brilliant. Especially love the dining/ guest bed section 🤍
i feel like it still cost $300,000 though
So dreamy... 😍 I'll build one now for myself via The Sims 4.
I do that too!!! My sims live in a lot of these designs around the worlds 😎
@@HelenBeeee We're so cool!!! Hahaaa 😁
None of that form-over-function crap, I love it. The usability obviously comes first in this house, making it a great place to live.
Wow, brilliant! I for one adore the customized sofa turns bed ; the simplicity, the height, the practicality. Kudos to the designer.
I love this little house that has everything you need. Great implementation, beautiful floor plan, wonderful cuckoo clock
Love it, so artsy , simple and refreshing 💜
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
Love the mural. It personalizes the shack and it looks so cool & fun from the outside. Great outside spaces. Overall, thoughtfully designed.
There's something about australia, calm and homey.
I really wish we could see these homes also at night, seeing how the lighting effects the design once the sun goes down
I really want to stay there ❤️ what an aesthetic ❤️❤️
ruclips.net/video/bhkaij6fCPM/видео.html
Such a beautiful house ♥️
Yes!!! More murals 🥰✨✨✨
Very clever use of the dinning area 👌🏽
Lovely space. Careful design. Aesthetically really graceful. But I couldn’t make it through the video as the narrators upspeak was driving me crazy.
what a wild exterior...LOVE IT!!
Too wild...and tacky.
As others said, this misses the point completely if it’s basically a holiday home. A shame, because the actual building itself is quite good. They should sell it to someone who wants to live there full time.
Also neoprene handles? I can’t think of anything I’d want my cupboard handles made of less.
And burning wood in the yard for aesthetic purposes. Not remotely sustainable. Very much the opposite. Why go out to clean air paradise if you’re going to poison yourselves and everyone around you?
I love the exterior of this home but, to me, the interior leaves something to be desired. Some of the finishes they've chosen - using plywood with unfinished edges, netting instead of more solid divider materials, is cheap looking. Also, regardless of the fact this is a vacation home and not used full-time, it needs a better kitchen. If I'm not mistaken and she said this place was isolated. Along with isolated is the understanding that the occupant isn't going to be running out for meals, hence better kitchen. Something easily accomplished in the existing footprint. It needs more seating, unless one wants their guests on the floor. It only seats maybe four people. It hits on a particular peeve of mine when a bed, even in a tiny home, has one side placed against the wall. How is one expected to make that bad? This isn't even just a plain bedframe, there is storage under the bed making it a little too heavy to pull out from the wall when it comes time to change the sheets. (I'm assuming these people do change their sheets.) Why make a weekly chore harder than it has to be? Finally, if one looks at the fire pit, it's off kilter. That's completely unnecessary because the fire pit they've chosen to use is portable. Why not put it somewhere where it sits flat on the ground? There's a lot going on here that shows a lack of care.
A nicely designed bach.
This house is one of the best I've seen on this channel. Spacious, thoughtful, fits the environment and innovative use of materials.
This is one of the few minimalist tiny home that feels homey, engaging with natures, and very practical. Plus the unique exterior murals and tennis nets! Who would have thought that. I could write a book in this home 😊
