NEVER TOO SMALL Melbourne Community First Small Apartment - 50sqm/538sqft

- Nightingale 1 is a revolutionary low footprint and sustainable small apartment building, designed by Breathe Architecture to encourage connection and the use of communal spaces. The 50m2 space has a limited palette, using linear joinery to unite the living spaces, but allow for separation through depth and height in the 2.7m width. By exposing the ceiling Breathe Architecture allowed for a greater sense of volume, further opening up the space by curtaining off the bedroom, and eliminating additional internal walls.

The rooftop is so comforting
This is a much more appealing style of efficient living than what’s being developed here in the US.
I completely agree! When we hear "efficient living" here it's pretty much a guarantee the place will be boring, ugly, terribly formatted, or all of the above
@Red HawK13 Ha, yes!
Nah,... where do you live in the us?... this look ok. We have better here in the US. It’s all about how much you welling to pay and location
@@richiemanchi7842 I'm sure it does depend on location and price range. I've moved a ton between the east coast and midwest and make a decent salary, and it's very often that I've seen really crappy "efficiency" spaces. But I'm sure plenty of people have had better experiences
@Red HawK13 Yeah if you live in a dump like San Fran, Chicago, LA and NY
I like this very much. However I would choose lighter colors for the cabinets and wall colors to make the most of any natural light via reflection.
My thoughts too. It appears quite dark inside.
Chris Cross I agree. The darker cabinets make it feel smaller. Lighter would open the space up a bit visually.
Just a shot in the dark but Melbourne is known for excessive heat and sun. In a place like this it might be better to shelter yourself from the sun a bit?
I agree as well.
I thought the same thing. They should just left the natural color of the wood shine through.
Never too small is my inspirations..
Many small apartments lack storage space, this one definitely doesn’t, love it! The bedroom area is the only thing that would bother me but other than that, well done! Looking amazing. Love the exposed materials :)
I would change the position of the bedroom and put it near the balcony, since I don't like the idea of having my bed close to the building hall.
yeah i was thinking can't be too loud with your partner since it's so close to the staircase
For noise yes, but the living area is where you spend most of your time
This will disturb sleep very often, especially when there are a lot of students or people with night shift. Must sound like the ensemble of Stomp
Better put the bathroom behind the entry door, this would create a bigger place to LIVE. And you can be loud in bed 😉
@@isaultra3405 Agreed. I think it’s more economical for them to build with all plumbing concentrated into one area. Also, that would eliminate the window near the entry which would take away the architect’s intent to use cross-ventilation.
The way the living space and the balcony is laid out is the only reason why I would live there, those areas feels like that's how flats with balconies should been designed in the first place
Yes! I love this architect, more buildings should be like this. If you want to see something similar, he's also done "The Commons" in Brunswick which is equally cool :)
5:21 The Commons is just across the building?? That looks nice!
@@adyanara It's even conveniently labeled "The Commons"
@@wilmaknickersfit They have lifts in all their building, large enough for a stretcher in case of medical emergency.
hannah yes but it has its design and build flaws - quite considerable ones too.
Is it the same architect that designed Nishi in Canberra? Similar elements and design ethos.
Although this is larger than many of the "small" apartments on RUclips, it makes good use of the added space. It has a real bed and sleeping area, not a hideaway, fold-up or sofabed. It has a full-sized kitchen with a full-sized fridge. I'm not keen on concrete sinks, but that's a easy fix. It has a living space with room for more than one guest to sit, and it has that delightful balcony. It has adequate storage, and some wall space for added cabinets. The bedroom curtain could be replaced with louvered sliding doors for more privacy. Hopefully, the building is oriented away from summer sun, and even though cross-ventilation and ceiling fans will keep it tolerable on most hot days and nights, it wouldn't take much energy to add air conditioning. This is one of the most practical plans I have seen, and with minor modifications, I could live there comfortably!
This is absolutely beautiful - the concept of the whole building as well as the flat itself - and that balcony!! 😍😍😍
The sense of community in this design is so strong, even the private things you want to do in the bedroom are going to shared in the public hallways.... the layout of the whole thing could have been better. :)
Agree. Even with the curtain, I don’t like the idea of people walking past my bedroom window.
Yes agreed elements of the plan feel unresolved but love the communal rooftop functions including the clotheslines! These should be mandatory in all new developments
To quote Star Trek Voyager:
"There is no one on deck nine, section twelve, who *doesn't* know when you're having intimate relations."
omg I remember passing by this building in the train and thought it looked amazing. Thanks for sharing!
This a fairly spacious apartment, ain't small at all.
It's small enough.
In my country, this would be considered a regular sized apartment!
Yeah, 538sqft for a studio is not small.
Alice W where is your county ?
It is compact. Still smaller than most standard 1 BRs.
i'm seeing some people that say they don't really like the bedroom, but I kinda love it - it definitely offers a different vibe contrary to the rest of the flat's aesthetic
That's a perfect space. Having cross ventilation is priceless. I love the rooftop and all the plants! Feels very serene.
It's like my ideas pop out of my head to somewhere in Australia. I feel so validated because this is the exact vision i've been curating, only done better. So much better.
I would absolutely love to live in this building
I would rather have the bedroom near the balcony.
yeah, i understand, but then i think you would make the living room to dark and closed off.
This is one of the purest apartments I've seen
Having a relaxed breakfast and watching a new video by you is just the perfect start of the day.
Loved the common areas more than the actual apartment.
Clever design choices makes this apartment feel spacious. Love love love it.
Because black is such an inviting, warm, uplifting colour to fill your living space with, and brass is always timeless, as the brass fixtures from the 80s were always retained and valued through the intervening decades (not).
This is just beautiful. They Even considered the 2.9 of highness!
Purely amazing!
I'd generally love to have a bedroom away from the entrance (in a hope of reducing any noise/dust from the outside corridor) ^^
I loved this project. I think I rarely saw the bedroom next to the entrance, but I understand this distribution, due to the fact that the view of the appartment if being given to the living room, really well solved, only with a curtain. Materials, colors, decoration... Looks like a home. Beautiful ❤
would kill for a balcony like that! absolutely gorgeous
this building and apartments are breathtaking, so much care put into the design and execution.
This might just be my favourite design so far. What a wonderful little space!
same!
Lovely space. If this was my apartment, I'd totally add AC as Melbourne has some crazy heat waves.
doubt you would need it. the cross ventilation and ceiling fans look like a better more eco-friendly way of cooling.
@@tiiamarsh2709 Was going to say the same thing. Cross ventilation + ceiling fans would aid a lot. Also with apartments either side, top and bottom your not getting direct sunlight/heat into your space.
I live in a double brick apartment in western Sydney. Survived 48c with only ceiling fans. Not the best, but for your average summer day I don't need aircon. If the space is laid out well. With good materials, you'd be fine. This apartment looks much better than mine for passive cooling, I think It'd be ok.
This is one of the most beautiful, peaceful yet functional small space that doesn't feel cramped and is truly a design jewel.
Everything about this is so planned perfectly! I could live there no problem. The sunroom/terrace adds so much life. There’s also tons of storage unlike most tiny houses.
The shot of her opening up the winter garden window👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
this place is super neat
The window should open out
I really like this! The only thing that kinda bothers me is that most of the bathrooms I've seen in this serie have unpractical showers and basins. I know it's a weird complaint but if it were for me I'd sacrifice a bit of fashion for efficiency.
oh my goodness!! This is the way of the future! My favourite building design!!!
It is a great example of how minimalism and sustainability are associated to generate a functional and aesthetic result, as well as providing common spaces within the private that encourage the good coexistence of the inhabitants.
I dont like that the bedroom is so close to the entrance and also has a window looking in the corridor
i agree! Zero privacy! Kitchen or the living room would be the logical choice! Anything is better than bedroom. Seems to be an Australian thing. I used to stay in Brunswick in Melbourne and the bedroom of the Victorian house was right in front too, next to the main door.
Yes who the heck locate it just by the entrance I tot I saw it wrong
Agree
people often like having their beds as far away from entrances/large windows as possible because it makes them feel secure (mainly so it would give us more time to react if someone were to break into your home) so the bedroom being so close to the entrance really puts me off
@@blumoo9938 Exactly. If I were to live there, I know for sure I would be sleeping in the living room.
this is one of the most beautiful apartments i've seen, would love to live there!!
Love the balcony area. Clearly separated from the rest of the apartment, both physically with the sliding door and it's style, while also having the option to be connected with the outside world and not needing to be. Really good space!
More of Bonnie! Enjoyed getting to see the work of and hear from a female architect!
I love everything about this building, very well thought out
The built in furniture looks a little dark for the room
Incredibly impressive.
I love everything about it, especially the kitchen area. I got some great ideas from this video. There is so much storage in the bedroom. The bathroom is compact but there is everything you need. Kudos to the designers.
Lovely, would definitely live here. Love the emphasis on community as well.
I love this project. So well designed!
I love the community kind of approach to this building
Except for it being so dark & putting the bedroom in the front & really having to like your neighbors if you were going to take advantage of the communal areas, I like it.
The bedroom is the only part of the house that did not do it for me
wafa bouhellous There wouldn’t be much hanky panky going on with that window in the common area lol
I'd put a bed in the glassed balcony ( when all the plants grown to screen outside) and use the bedroom as a living room.
It's a very versatile designed apartment , I'm sure you could customize it to your liking :-)
@@graphite2786 That is a COOL idea! (You must be a designer? 😊)
Yes! Imagine all the dirt from the shoes when you enter, directly close to the bed. Bedroom should be a clean sanctuary, not a corridor...
also there's not much natural light getting into that bedroom, i like to wake up with some sun hitting the bed
It is 2:42 in the morning, but I've got my priorities set straight.
Me as well.
It is 10.16 in the morning too
Same here. 04:22 AM and I don't even know how I got here 😂
I could listen to her talk about design all night. This is one of my favorite apartments.
I really like this efficient and industrial style without losing comfort and elegance, one of the best projects showed on this channel, congratulations.
The music and the scene at the roof gave me a flashback to an acid trip for some reason
😂
apartments like these have come a long way. I stayed in an old "compact" studio which was built just 10 years ago, and every time a neighbour takes a shit you could hear the flushing and piping noises.
it takes meticulous planning when it comes to privacy and sound proofing when so many people live a small amount of space.
John Ngui I own a $300,000 investment property condo 2 bed/2 bath & you can hear EVERYTHING!!!! It’s absolutely ridiculous to have no sound barrier between units
I loveee the brass and concrete material use , the black form ply , lofty ceilings and zero carbon footprint. I wish I could live there . great job
i really like the curtain that makes a turn to cover the window by the entrance!
I think this is my favorite design and use of space so far-lots of storage and thoughtful use of materials. Simple. Great job.
I absolutely love this, the industrial style, functionality and use of plants... the whole concept of shared living spaces will definitely become more and more important. I’d love to see a bit bigger apartments included for families!
Love the commitment to sustainability. We need more apartments like this and it should be included in building norms!
I love it. The mood, the colors and the placement of each and every space!! 🤗 Makes me wanna move in
I love your videos because they inspire me....🥺🖤
I wish we had more options like this in the US. Things even remotely like this are few and far between.
This is absolutely fantastic! I don't mind the curtained bedroom at all, and the kitchen/living room is so, so beautiful!
Stairwell/atrium is lovely and all that wood flooring.
those communal spaces are a nightmare for us introverts
It's so beautiful. I wanna live there!
Love the sense of community that integrates this building.
Very nice built-in cabinets. I love how the handle is just a cutout of the surface. Nice full-size sinks. I love the muted colors with brass fixtures. Industrial but not cluttered.
Here in Germany 50sqm is not small, it's a common size. For a single person you could also find appartments with 25-40sqm and that's common as well.
the average home size in Germany is about 50sqm per person. so, yes, for 2 people this apartment can be considered small
@@belabacon8952 I don't know where you live but we don't have appartments with 100sqm for 2 people here.
@@sanna4761 homes, not only apartments, but this is actually the average size for modern homes. you can just look it up
The most decent living area i saw in this channel. Esthetic, quality and the space are nice. I think it would be less tunnel effect if they could have windows on the side wall. But it’s really cozy place. I like the common are idea. But reality is unfortunately not always instresting. If every is respectful: yes it’s nice. But that’s not always the case.
WOW, I Love it! Nice use of small space, but it's all the life that the design brings by incorporating all the plants that makes this one of my favorite of the never too small places. Thank You!
I wish I could live there. Everything looks beautiful. Perfect design style for my taste. I would enjoy every second I spend at home and smiling about the beautiful things that are surrounding me.
Not far from Moonee Ponds
The home of Dame Edna Everage
What the film didn't mention was that
Nightingale 1 is about 200 metres
From Anstey Station - on the Upfield line
A suburban service into Melbourne.
Which makes it a great location.
I watch a lot of "tiny" spaces of 50m2 here... I've designed some nice two bedroom apartments with that area. Not in cases like this one of course, but with a good shape plan is easy to get
I really think they mean 30m².
The narrator says the apartment is 2.7 m wide.
50 ÷ 2.7 is 18.5 meters long!!!
But if you dive 30 by 2.7 you get 11 meters. This is what the apartment plan they show scales to.
I do know that they had some 2 bedroom apartments for sale in the same complex. I would say that the channel has made a mistake with their data.
this is my absolute favourite Apartment and Video on this channel, I love it!
The extension is an awesome addition because it is able to be used YEAR round...perfect!
The bedroom can' t be near the entrance door. The toilets 🚽, yes, and in a separated place the bath 🛀 and the shower. After, the bedroom with a wall made of a thick window, avec des briques en verre, to create a natural opacity. This way you have light but also privacy. At night a curtain can reinforce this place for the intimacy. Logical for the kitchen, living space and balcony. Here. 🌹
I would be quite happy to live here - I love every aspect of the apartment..
I have seen a lot of designs for small spaces and this one is my absolute favorite it is fantastic..
Even the laundry is aesthetic!
Videos like yours make me strangely relaxed and happy. Keep up the good work!
Bigger than my apartment lol. Two of us live in a 45m sq one bed apartment and apart from being clever with storage it’s totally comfortable. And we have a bedroom wall 😂
Am I the only one who sees the irony with so many small apartments in country that has so MUCH space.
most of the country is sand
Love the thinking behind the bigger communal plan.
This is the best episode I've seen from this channel. So peaceful
Did that bed"room" have a window on the stairs? 😳
You know, for community!
What is the price tag? Corporate and luxury small spaces like these are usually exploitative.
from nightingalehousing.org/faq: In this building, the cheapest 1-bedroom apartment sold for $415,000 AUD ($256,000 US) while the most expensive 2-bedroom apartment sold for $655,000 AUD ($404,128 US)
Also, for reference to international viewers, the suburb (Brunswick) is a pretty trendy area that's close to the Melbourne CBD. Similar in vibe to somewhere like Williamsburg in Brooklyn NYC?
@@KG-ul7nx those prices actually don't seem too bad. On the goldcoast, a 30 year old 1 bedroom two story walkup unit is still going to cost you close to 300K. Cost of those units that you quoted seem alright.
@@spritsfal5088 While it's true that you could build or even buy a house for that price outside the city, what's the issue is the trade off? Housing is less, but you need to drive everywhere and there's limited resources (ie. Work, medical services, etc).
Anjel IHart yes... that’s the appeal. Using less resources!
Loooove this apartment..love the whole building..love the whole concept!
Clever design, I would like to live in an apartment like those ones. We have some amazing architects and designers here in Australia.
50m2 is huge.....
ikr?
I guess the standards for sone cities are just wildly different.
Is more like a 30m2. 2,7m x 11m, not 2,7x18,5
@@gaes1203 That 2,7 can't be real. Its absolutely impossible
@Keep it 90 SAS square meters = m*m, meters squared = m*m. They are literally the same thing, just differently expressed.
It also the minimum m2 that most Aussie banks will lend for
(without the borrower providing some major equity to compensate)
I'm sure it's really fun to live in a small apartment which focuses on shared communal spaces and "city life" for entertainment, social needs, and eating out ...during a pandemic that shuts down city life, entertainment, and eating out and you're constantly bumping into your neighbors and sharing essentials with them.
The design principle caters more to students rather than working age individuals. It’s very nice like a college dormitory.
A very innovative old industrial look, purposed properly for effective use. Perfect for long term affordable residency.
I've seen so many amazing designs for tiny houses, smaller than this one, but this isn't one of them. Linear design to integrate spaces just don't make much sense.
A Murphy bed could turn the BR into a reception room during the day.
or an office.
Absolutely gorgeous building and well designed appartment.
Love the distrubution! Ive never loved exposed instalations or "industrial" design. Love it in a bar o hip restaurant but at home it feels quite impersonal.
LOVE this apartment, the only questionable part is the shared laundry. People can be quite crazy when it comes to that stuff.
Good point, though I doubt this is cheap, and the other residents probably aren't going to act like people in your average block. In fact, it's probably meant to simulate "an experience".
@@bastienmillecam3183 Given the price of a place like this, I would be disappointed to not have a washer/dryer in my place.
"Deliver more for less" is actually code for "deliver less for more".
So peaceful and lovely!
The ceiling is awesome reminds me of the first Dutch Design type,s years ago awesome. love it also to leave the lines open and just paint. great.
