Or here's an idea .... don't be single. We're not designed to live alone. It makes us weird and scratchy. We're social mammals, designed to live in family groups. Don't work against your own nature. Get married. Have kids. Stay married. Have grandkids. Live together in one home. A home with the sound of laughter and busy-ness and human warmth. A home with dogs, and a big garden. Plus, think how much happier and safer you'll be in a pandemic 😷😜

The bath has to be behind the stove wall. A very long slender room with sink and toilet on one side of skinny room, with shower at end. This is crazy that they didn't show it. People want to know, **** it!
It was a very conventional looking bathroom so I didn't film it. Since then I try to even film the more conventional stuff or people's imaginations run wild :)
A lot of people do this sort of thing wrong. But these guys did it right. One walks away with a general impression of space, not confinement. Love it. Perfect!
There are a number of things I like about how this flat is laid out. The lack of separation between the kitchen and the sleeping space would be a deal breaker for me. Background info on the two gents and how this space fits their work and home lives would have been great. They seem to imply that Eric works form home (as a school teacher?) His unnamed other half narrated a section at the end that showed a number of spaces the "we" worked on. Is he an architect? Context would have made this episode more coherent.
That bulky cabinet with less capacity to hold things. I thought it's a poor use of space. I've seen smaller studios that has more storage space and full size fridge and more counter space in the kitchen.
Excellent job and it makes perfect sense, primarily for a single person. You can only be in one room at a time anyway, so why not just have a single, comfortable room and have the ability for the space to serve multiple purposes? 95% of the time we are either sleeping, working at our desks, sitting on our couch or eating in one single room anyway. It's not like we constantly need to be walking between multiple rooms all the time, and even if you needed to feel that way, you can just leave your apartment and walk around the block for a bit then come back to reset your orientation to your space.
I'm really glad to see somebody in the United States using ingenuity four spaces and cabinetry. The large well thought out cabinet,MAKES that apartment I'd love one in my house. I'm glad your branching out also. We don't need huge homes...we need to think more about space and others and the natural world. Keep going, great work.
just make sure you have enough room around your microwave to ventilate it -read the instruction book ... but I love the apartment - very relaxing - and looks a lovely building and outside too

+MademoiselleLapin Teachers get paid way to much. They make a minimum of 70k a year for 8 months of work. Hell I would work for 40k a year if I had 3-4 months off a year. Teachers get paid too much while the kids get dumber and dumber.
TheJadeen Your either a liar, wrong, or she works for a private school. ALL techers in NY atleast make a 60k STARTING with full benefits. Secondly 30k a year for 8 months of work? Shouldn't be bitching if you ask me. If she had a problem she should have got a real job that has 12 months of work like most people. Teachers get paid way to much and the kids get dumber. If teachers have a problem they should get a real job. Its not like they teach anything useful.

That apt is a half million today and up. the price mentioned was the purchase price in 2005. Additionally, expect a monthly maintenance fee of between 1700 - 2000 per month. I live in the adjoining neighborhood , Hells Kitchen.
This is so calming! I can see after spending a hectic day at work in NYC of all places your stress levels have to drop the moment you walk through the door.

This is very well done. Very optimized yet realistically usable. It's nice to see a kitchen where you can do normal cooking. Japanese and South Korean design/storage is excellent. They have ideas and things we just aren't adapting fast enough.
The place is too small for a bathroom! lol I was thinking the same thing as you...I was curious to see the bathroom, too! I suppose this place would be perfect for a lot of guys, but I can not imagine ...ok I will speak for myself and say I can not imagine myself living in such a tiny space and NO garage!!!! Like for the excess stuff and well...garage stuff. But it certainly looks very functional. I just need more space!!!.. :-)
Wow. Wow. Wow. I am so extremely impressed. This is giving so much living space to such a small apartment. There's only one thing I would change and that is the coloring. I would make the closet off white, and the kitchen table of wood, more after my taste. But THIS is how a tiny apartment would work for me too. One invests up front, but gets so much living quality back for it. WELL DONE ! Exemplary well done!
This is a pretty civilized small apartment. The corner windows are the key. He'll have no problem selling it when he's ready to move on and if he ends up there for the rest of his life, it's still pretty livable.
Imagine spending 6 months of lockdown in a micro apartment like this with no outside space of any kind - not even a balcony... 2020 sure changed some priorities...
Lots of light really helps. That is a lovely space. Thanks for taking more time to show off more of the company. The 2 frigides? 1 fridge 2 doors is great.
I saw a 20th anniversary screening of The Fifth Element last night and Bruce Willis' apartment in that film used a fair number of these transforming ideas! But their bed doesn't automatically clean and shrink-wrap itself every day, I see...
Yes an no. The cabinets take up space, but, it adds more furniture to it with more uses. So it's like getting two, really 4, in one. The space lost is gained because of how multi-functional it is. I thought the same thing too until I watched the full video. It's a good investment under the curcumstances.
With so many big, beautiful windows, why would you choose to sit at a desk facing AWAY from them? Natural light is healthy and makes you more productive! And the sun wouldn't be shining on the laptop screen either.
I really like this home tour! You guys nailed it! I have 1 suggestion - lose the dishwasher, you could use the storage space. I've lived in enough rentals. Dishwashers don't last. The blink pics revealing alt uses at other projects was inspiring. Never seen a well-lighted home with no lamps. Clever!
katfmb I know right? I have a home I bought in the suburbs of Calgary, Alberta in Canada for 250,000 with 5 bedrooms and 2 full baths and a heated garage. Go figure.
This is SO cool. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii and apartment space is at a premium. I really like all these modifications and how it maximizes every single piece of the apartment.
Maybe they didn't wanted to show the bathroom because he/they have some secrets out there. I will say, if the apartment doesn't have bathroom, it isn't worth 1/15 of the price.
There is a bathroom. It was just too conventional so I didn't bother showing it. I hadn't anticipated that many people need to see things to believe they exist.
I wondered if the bathroom was in the apartment or if it was in the hallway and shared with other tenants. I'd like to think 235k gets you your own bathroom in the unit but it is NYC....
+Kirsten Dirksen I think the point some people are making is that in NYC, small apartments sometimes have to share a bathroom with their neighbors, and the video makes it seem there is no bathroom in this apartment. Even a brief mention along the lines of "and around this corner is the bathroom" could have covered that, still without actually showing it.
I do like the space planning, and the owners sense of style, and what a sweet man. I would have chosen a lighter color for the storage cabinetry. It makes the unit a bit overbearing. All in all. Congratulations! Beautiful, and thoughtful remodel.

How do you know where the bathroom is... they don't speak of it and don't show any of it... ???
Same,I had to share a bathroom in my college dorm and I'm so happy classes are all online now and I can have my own bathroom
1:20 also opens up to provide a confessional 🤣
I live in a studio in Brooklyn and it's really quite big. I liked when you said, bringing things in just because you want them or just because you can have them. I cannot do stuff like you guys because I'm pretty poor. I love my studio and that's all I need. A brand new roof over my head with, believe it or not, a full kitchen. Less to clean and it keeps me safe. Great video. I'm a little envious but in a good way.💞
I could live in this apartment it is amazing! and this is despite once moving into a micro studio apartment that was my first home without sharing with anyone.. Outstanding design!!!!!
So great! I love the architect's voice as he explains the thoughts behind the design.
But like I LEGIT LOVE AND WISH MORE APARTMENT'S WERE THIS VERSATILE TO MAKE SINGLE LIVING AFFORDABLE AGAIN 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
Ya know, I think giving a person 400ft or less can be a bit sucky. Like yea they figured it out but ppl need a lot of money to redo these spaces and the spaces that are already curated like this , cost a lot to rent. The idea is beautiful but I feel like landlords would unfortunately take advantage and just continue to make these costly
Yes!
@@aureliusmarcus1817 Lol many married couples' homes are not full of laughter and human warmth. To each their own. Not everyone's "own nature" is the same. Stop acting like we all need to follow the same pre-prescribed life.
@@jennifermarie3158 Sure. You go ahead and enjoy a dysfunctional marriage and a childless life in a sterile apartment somewhere no one gives a damn about you .... if that's your preference. It's all choices. Choose a healthy marriage to a sound person of good character, choose family, choose a home and stability, choose a community which cares. All choices, not luck.
Really like the way this bed divides the room. Prety simple and functional and this apt has everything for a comfy living
oOGeekITOo yeah, your guests won’t hear you fart at all.
glad to see michael chen, I am one of his student from Bangladesh at pratt institute. he was my thesis teacher. amazing work Michael. good luck. from raihan alamgir Lukan
This is the video that hooked me on " small footprint' living! I sometimes forget the video for a few years and then come back and have to see it again... See again how amazing a well planned small place can be. Important also how fresh this still feels after so many years. Thanx Kirsten :-)
well, that's the smartest Thing i've ever seen! when he said "i like having everything for a purpose, i don't like just bringing stuff in because i can." i thought i heard myself talking, LOL
Lol 1:06
It looks like a confessional.
Agreed lol.prob need to change the color and the patterns
Lol. Yeah. A light gray, that blue is disheartening
One of the best designs I’ve seen on your site.
Great philosophy and beautiful execution, both esthetically and in detail.
@@kirstendirksen good to know. It bugged me so much not knowing I even googled him glad to finally find this comment
@@kirstendirksen SHOW IT,SHOW IT! WE still want to see it....look at all the negative comments because you did not show it.
Show us the bathroom please!
Still not fair. Bathroom should be shown, too.
A lot of people do this sort of thing wrong. But these guys did it right. One walks away with a general impression of space, not confinement. Love it. Perfect!
"Origami apartment" means a fold-down bed?
Yes. 🤣
To be fair it's alot more that just a fold down bed!
Still I expected something more
This is so creative and beautiful! Love it. :)
This is sooo nice. The coolest transformation I've seen so far for tiny apartments! Just love it!
He's the Architect...he doesn't live there.
There are dozens of comments on here claiming they're lovers... they aren't. The Asian guy is the designer
That bulky cabinet with less capacity to hold things. I thought it's a poor use of space. I've seen smaller studios that has more storage space and full size fridge and more counter space in the kitchen.
When the bed is up, the area is practically useless. And the cabinet doesn't look nice either, a big dark thing in the middle of a long apartment.
I agree. Lots of wasted space in the centre and not enough storage in the kitchen.
This apartment doesn't look so small, and I love the living room with those fabulous views. This is it!!!
And if someone farts, you're all dead.
Hahaha nice one
+Learn Computer Science and... where is the bath room?
+Learn Computer Science I spit out my drink. lol
💨🙊 😂😂😂😂😂
+Learn Computer Science Micro Gas Chamber..lol
Excellent job and it makes perfect sense, primarily for a single person. You can only be in one room at a time anyway, so why not just have a single, comfortable room and have the ability for the space to serve multiple purposes? 95% of the time we are either sleeping, working at our desks, sitting on our couch or eating in one single room anyway. It's not like we constantly need to be walking between multiple rooms all the time, and even if you needed to feel that way, you can just leave your apartment and walk around the block for a bit then come back to reset your orientation to your space.
I agree and think this is a great place for a single person with space for occasional guests. Love it!
I'm really glad to see somebody in the United States using ingenuity four spaces and cabinetry.
The large well thought out cabinet,MAKES that apartment
I'd love one in my house.
I'm glad your branching out also.
We don't need huge homes...we need to think more about space and others and the natural world. Keep going, great work.
I love your living space and how you've maximized what you have. Thank you for sharing it with us.
just make sure you have enough room around your microwave to ventilate it -read the instruction book ... but I love the apartment - very relaxing - and looks a lovely building and outside too
OMG I absolutely love creative people who understand what they want and be able to create themselves a wonderful space for their lives!
Thank you for sharing!
Just perfect design! Congrats on a job well done!
I wish you would talk more about how much the custom, spacing saving origami furniture costs in this tiny apartment. 235k was just the apartment correct? Kitchen remodel + custom cabinet with bed added another $ ________?
+brashearbeer
You obviously didn't read the video description.
Yes good question.
$70,000 to renovate, the description says
Love your work Kristen - every single time. The Escher inspired home in Berlin was such a joy, & here's another gem - on a different scale. You've given us all so many inspired design ideas! How do you find such brilliant places to showcase?
Nice really charged my brain! So private and a beautiful condo.🤗
the real interesting story is how a 3rd grade teacher brought out 235,000 for that apartment. dang. what school does he teach at.
+MademoiselleLapin Its called saving up.
+MademoiselleLapin have you ever heard about MORTGAGE?
+MademoiselleLapin Teachers get paid way to much. They make a minimum of 70k a year for 8 months of work. Hell I would work for 40k a year if I had 3-4 months off a year. Teachers get paid too much while the kids get dumber and dumber.
+TJ K you are actually stupid. My mother is a teach and she makes 30k a year without benefits.
TheJadeen
Your either a liar, wrong, or she works for a private school.
This is one of a very few video's I can watch over and over. considering its smallness, its amazing how well serviced it is, and I see something new regularly.
Brilliant use of the space! Every inch made useful. I admire the design 100%. I live in Manhattan and know how use of space is so important.
Gods, this is like functional, interactive, sustaining art. I wish I was so skilled and inspired!
This is one of the best small apartment renovations I have ever seen
Wow, great job, I'd put in a projector TV & Roll down screen if I was there.
+Carl H
But what if you want to watch TV during the day? I'd go with a wall mounted TV in place of a projection screen. (It'd save space on having a projector too.)
yes, good point.
Toward the end you could see the TV was wall-mounted, opposite the couch.
You couldn't have a powerful audio system though, unless all your neighbors work during the day and you don't. No chance of that
now is 2019, at Hong Kong, they are selling 150 square foot nano apartment there at about half million USD. FUN!
That apt is a half million today and up. the price mentioned was the purchase price in 2005. Additionally, expect a monthly maintenance fee of between 1700 - 2000 per month. I live in the adjoining neighborhood , Hells Kitchen.
This is so calming! I can see after spending a hectic day at work in NYC of all places your stress levels have to drop the moment you walk through the door.
were do i unfold this place to take a shit ?
David Marulanda lol 😄oh that's funny.
Down the hall and to the right.
Don't be in a hurry.
Oh yeh! Where was the bathroom!? Must have been shared
He showed there's a hidden space through the wardrobe into under the counters. It's in there.
7:50 "aagh I get overwhelmed by too much" - Has countless books in his bookshelves, in the kitchen cabinet, on the kitchen counter, under the sofa, over his bed, in and on the window cabinets
This is very well done. Very optimized yet realistically usable. It's nice to see a kitchen where you can do normal cooking. Japanese and South Korean design/storage is excellent. They have ideas and things we just aren't adapting fast enough.
"The pull out attachment that separates the bed and turns to a desk, looks like a prison window!"
I was thinking more of a confessional booth lmao
Funny how design brings out different associations.
Pretty awesome... but where was the bathroom?? Would have liked to see how that worked too.
Yes space.. I don't think there's enough room for all my shoes, let alone anything else lol

Yes space.. I don't think there's enough room for all my shoes, let alone anything else lol
Michelle Ware I can imagine! I am more a handbag gal than shoes, but that closet wouldn't even hold my kittie's sweaters!!! lol
vegasjill21 omg lol, guess kitty needs sweaters too lol. :)
Wow. Wow.
From Pewdiepie, to Buzzfeed, to Good Mythical Morning, and Here I am.
Yes!
Clorox Bleach u did to
ew
The bed could be in the extreme right, where the living room is so there could be more privacy. Anyway awesome house
Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of the bed position either, I guess they wanted it away from the windows, but I’d definitely have it the other way.
Very imaginative use of space. Nice color blue, not all white.
Kathy B.
Very Beautiful Home & A Job Well Done.
This is a pretty civilized small apartment. The corner windows are the key. He'll have no problem selling it when he's ready to move on and if he ends up there for the rest of his life, it's still pretty livable.
Whose tongue is that?
This is probably one of the smartest and unique use of space I’ve ever seen. Thank you !!
This man isn't poor. He just likes to live in this small space. However, where is the bathroom?
they don't make poop. Are too exquisit
No bathroom here...they are fudge packers! no need....
The bathroom is probably shared with other tenants (so outside their apartment), its not too uncommon in nyc
Depends... get it. ;)
It looked like the bathroom was behind the kitchen by the front door.
Yeah....disappointing 😔
That blue hutch/ Murphy bed 🛌 is Everything!!! It’s absolutely beautiful.
Nice cozy place. Always amazed that 2 people can live in this size apartment. Well designed
So they just made the apartment smaller with that gigantic cabinet
sharon sanchez smh ur so dumb
Did you watch the video?
Oh my gosh. You are so dumb
I know it's an old post: but he can use desk when that doors are closed - having windows on his right side
What a nice, sunny, comfortable living area! Good design. It looks like and gives the sense of being lived in. Home.
That's a mighty sweet setup.
00:10 Isn't this the "apartment" Ross looked at with Chandler which had the kitchen/bathroom? 😂
This is as beautiful as it is functional. You guys are brilliant!
where's the bathroom?? lol
There's a perfectly good window
i think that the garden would work too as a bathroom
+liltrooper29 How picky can you be?
+liltrooper29 Coffee shop down 7 floors and to the right as you go out the front door.
They are minimalists apparently they shit in the park, or simply don't eat too eliminate the need....!
I like this apartment.
I do too. I think it is great.
I love it,it seems so homey 😊
I really like this home tour! You guys nailed it! I have 1 suggestion - lose the dishwasher, you could use the storage space. I've lived in enough rentals. Dishwashers don't last. The blink pics revealing alt uses at other projects was inspiring. Never seen a well-lighted home with no lamps. Clever!
Not to mention you probably won't have many dishes anyways in a space that small
Where was the wash room.
He didn't show it because it wasn't intresting enough to show on-video
It's crazy he paid 235,000 for this tiny apartment
katfmb I know right? I have a home I bought in the suburbs of Calgary, Alberta in Canada for 250,000 with 5 bedrooms and 2 full baths and a heated garage. Go figure.
That's a steal in Manhattan. And why would a single person need a big house/apartment anyway?
@@lindagarrido4353 it is! but still, for that price you can buy a decent sized home not a matchbox anywhere in the world. crazy but it is what it is.
2005 prices. An apt currently that size in that location would be around 500,000 and up with a monthly maintenance of at least 1700-2200 per month.
It’s a bargain for NYC.
This is SO cool. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii and apartment space is at a premium. I really like all these modifications and how it maximizes every single piece of the apartment.
Information said he spent $70,000.00 on renovations for bathroom, etc., where's the bathroom?
I ve had a small apartment like that before. I could walk most places. it wasn't too bad
What a beautiful, functional and inviting home. Such a creative space.
Kirsten Dirksen
That's the way, Donald Trump was able to become that rich, that he is.-:)
I wondered if the bathroom was in the apartment or if it was in the hallway and shared with other tenants. I'd like to think 235k gets you your own bathroom in the unit but it is NYC....
+Kirsten Dirksen
I think the point some people are making is that in NYC, small apartments sometimes have to share a bathroom with their neighbors, and the video makes it seem there is no bathroom in this apartment. Even a brief mention along the lines of "and around this corner is the bathroom" could have covered that, still without actually showing it.
where's the bathroom?
Not enough book space for me
I do like the space planning, and the owners sense of style, and what a sweet man. I would have chosen a lighter color for the storage cabinetry. It makes the unit a bit overbearing. All in all. Congratulations! Beautiful, and thoughtful remodel.
This is very very perfect.
I really like. Most custom small space are colorless and too minimalist. This studio has caracters, airy and lot of natural light. Very cozy!
where's the bathroom?
This is creativity
Catalina Garcia You're profile pic isn't
is this supposed to be a insult? I just said one thing. you didn't have to stick you damn nose into it.
