@@knowyourkismat This is somewhat economical as the costs could be spread among four groups. There isn't much of a yard here though.. would like to see more rooftop gardens/outdoor living areas on these.

Great plan for all the family members. What the parents did for their children is a special gift and Grandmother. Not to be regretted. The houses were well planned. Especially the home with the small children.

Love this. The happiest years of my childhood were when my grandparents lived down the street, in an old Edwardian, with their eldest daughter, her husband and six children. We visited daily on the way to school. As her eldest children left home, she took in my widowed uncle and his baby daughter. My aunt was an amazing person, looking after us all, and tolerating dozens of visitors.
I doubt that. It's Delta, not Point Grey or West Vancouver. The median home/land price in Delta is around $1.4M, and that includes a house. The land here might be valued around $1 million right now, and probably less when they started this venture, years ago. Regardless, it's still a generous gift of about $250k per house.
Very, very cool. I was fortunate enough to be able to surprise my parents with a little DADU on the other side of my property, when I was building my home back in 2020. To now have them 200' away has been the biggest blessing. It's just the coolest thing. I'm so grateful for our set-up and how nicely it is working for the both of us. We too call it the compound. Personally, I think multi-generational housing is the future. Especially with how expensive everything is. We are definitely stronger together!
@@ulriklange3924 "This stands for Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit. It is sometimes called a backyard cottage, granny flat, or even Laneway house if you’re from Canada, eh. A DADU is basically a detached, smaller, newly constructed home in a residentially zoned neighborhood. "
What is also great, and makes this possible, is the city/municipality that allows the lot to be separated in this way. I think most cities are quite restrictive, and hopefully that will change. This family is living together and taking care of its own. Love it.
This is brilliant. I am European so I know a lot about compact leaving. I love what this family did. I wish I had a family to do it with or any family that wants to do this and I would be a part of that. This is really awesome. My eyes were "huge" watching this as I did not consider this was possible in Canada. Thank you for showing this.
This is just incredible. We should allow this as a norm or at least as an alternative, regardless of multi-generational concept in mind. That laundry shoot is ingenious!
They do allow it in British Columbia now thanks to the Higgins example. Here's what Kathleen said about it (that I didn't include in the piece): "They changed the legislation to allow 4 units per big lot all over BC and they use our project as an example". Thanks for the reminder to get that info out there.
@@kirstendirksen Thank you for the clarification. I was thinking out loud about this being an accepted norm globally. Wishful thinking, I know.. 🙂 However, thank you for sharing this, I enjoyed it very much.
I grew up in a big 2 story house that had a laundry shoot. Such a convenience. Unfortunately, our cat hated it and he hated my brother for dropping him down it more than once.
We live a couple blocks away from the Higgins and plan to do a similar venture. The Provincial Government will allow up to 6 units if the property is within 400 metres of Public Transit that leaves at least every 15 minutes. Our lot is within that distance but transit (bus) on 112th street only moves at 30 minutes intervals so 4 units permitted only on our lot. I recently attended the City of Delta's "Planathon" meeting and met with City planner etc officials on what could be constructed on our lot. Thanks again for doing this video. I am sharing it with my friends and neighbours here in N.Delta. @@kirstendirksen
Really fantastic design and architecture. At the end of he day it all about design, not fancy finishes. The contrast with the huge single family house next door is interesting.
Thank you so much for this one Kirsten. That's a lot of wisdom and generosity from this woman/mother/grand-mother who carry the world on her shoulders. Yes I think many people will have to accept that a house should first be used to meet our needs not to show off our wealth. From Montréal. Canada.
This is awesome. I wish I could live this close from my in-laws. No driving, no traffic, more connected to people. Specially if you don't have a family here. Simply awesome
This is absolutely brilliant! I've recently become involved in housing advocacy (in Calgary, AB), and my response is: this is great for a family that already owns land outright that is large enough for 4 homes on the ground, has the financial capacity to develop, and is a very healthy family system where they can live together happily and productively. It is not a solution for the very many households that are suffering from the housing crisis. But for this, particular, family it is perfect. I wish many more people could live as they do!
What a beautiful arrangement! Very peaceful and practical. ❤ Nice people and great neighbors, I bet. If more families could live this way, it would really benefit society.
This is genius!! So many families would benefit from this idea. Let the groundswell begin and sweep across the land. The time is right to join the generations together by giving them separate, affordable housing in close proximity so they can help each other. I just love it!
This is for people who absolutely LOVe the challenge of building codes, inspectors and bureaucracy. Kudos to all of them for working together to create the life they want.
I agree, from everything that was said it seemed a mammoth task to get very involved with building codes etc what patience & intelligence to do all that !
What an absolute pleasure it was to watch this! Ingenuity overload! The fold up desk chair, laundry shoot, everything utilizing every square inch. Each house is exactly that..a house!
This is just beautiful. How many people in the US or Canada actually get to grow up with a Great-grandparent, let alone, grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins … Even the daughter-in-law’s sister, I ❤ it! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This is a fabulous video! I loved seeing the multi-generations living so close. Yes, back in the day, this was common.. I love that the ever so young 94 yr old great- grandmother is able to share in this adventure.
That woman seems like an incredible person. This is what family is! I wish more people had a woman like her in their family. The world would be a much better place.
This is so cool. It is a beautiful to see families living so close and happy together, but still respect each others privacy and independence. I wish more families could live this way. It would solve a lot of issues in modern society in terms of child case, elder parent care, reducing cost of living, our imprint on the environment and on and on. Bravo to these parents for being so farsighted and selfless.
This is dope. Love that these parents did it this way. This is a smart idea. That's how you know this is a great family. They raised their kids right. Blessed the parents.
How great is that!!! It suits every person or families needs and brings the family closer together! There’s always a helping hand nearby and privacy too!!! What a remarkable couple!! And I love granny! What a sweetheart 🥰❤️
🙏🏾 This video …. My heart is full ! This family is intentional and beautiful! Great grandmother is so Humble and lively !!!! I want this for my parents and children!!! Austin, Tx
Brilliant plan & impeccably executed. I love the respect for the neighbors & getting their buy-in. So many don’t appreciate that - and it only takes one neighbor to object & stop the whole thing. It would be a dream to live generationally like this - especially if you have a healthy family- good boundaries. ♥️👍🏼
This is actually what my great grandparents did to their property when my grandparents got married back in China. I didn’t even know this is possible to do in the Lower Mainland. Hopefully city councils will be more open to these types of developments. I’m all for condo developments, but missing middle housing like duplexes and townhouses are also much needed.
love the idea! would be very challenging for many I think as we are out of practice living so close. accountability and honesty are frightening qualities for families struggling with substance use and or financial difficulties. could really heal generations given the chance. I hope Great grandmom lives another 20 years.
I grew up having my mother’ family within 2 miles radius. It was so secure-anybody could and would be at your house within minutes. This is a suburban take on that rural collective-independent living, near-instant support without claustrophobia. Nobody’s staying home because there isn’t a sitter available. Nobody’s nose is in anybody else’s house. Very well done. I admit to some envy, as my adult children begin to sprout offspring, and the travel across the continent becomes… tedious.
Fabulous solution! Wish I had family that could have done this! On a side note: I had a friend that lived in that same neighbourhood. At about 13:56 in this video there is an aerial shot of the neighbourhood. Margaret's house was the grey roofed house towards the upper right right with a white balcony. She passed away during 2022 and I was so happy to see this video and again remember the happy times I spent with Margaret in that house.
Good Design …. Good morals to keep family together …. The son John is an instructor for a building course with BC housing. I recognized his voice in a second.
This is great. It doesn't seem intrusive to their neighbours, and the little houses have lots of room for off street parking. We live in BC with grown children as well and worry how they will afford their own places to live...

I was so moved by this story. What a cracking family, their passion as well for how to achieve it and get the community on board as well was so nice. Instead of just one big investment you have 4 houses which are enough for everyone
What a beautiful family, what a beautiful story, what beautiful homes. So happy for them and their idea is brilliant. Wishing them nothing but the best.
he's so right! i grew up in a cmhc veterans home! Everybody took care of their property and their homes back then. Nothing wrong with any of them when they started demolishing them to put houses from end of the lot to the front of the lot. So sad. Multigenerational living back then, too. We've lost so much as a society. This is fantastic.
What an awesome setup! My wife and I have done something similar and have a sibling next door, FIL living with us, and my parents on the same block. It tremendously cuts down on common stresses of having older parents and children.
My childhood hispanic neighbors did this. When the oldest son turned about 18 or so they built his house toward back of acre with room for the next 2 kids when they were ready. And family that lived next to them were setting up for same. Heartwarming to see family very near their elders.
You should email Kirsten about them I feel like there needs to be more diverse representation of the people living in well considered dwelling archetypes
Naw, I reckon she reads comments and I'd rather watch her own journey into this subject. Family land with multiple dwellings is relatively common in the u.s. where acreage is available, such as farms and ranches. But I was impressed with my neighbors and went on to learn much more during travels, and living, in Mexico's interior. As well as a few other countries, such as eastern Europe where dachas exist. But I think this video is unique in that it is addressing this possibility within an urban area. But yeah, overall this has been done throughout history. It just works best in cultures that have strong family ties. Cheers!
What in God's world makes this creative in any particular way this is beyond ...... It's like saying how do you lose weight and somebody responds just eat less food ....ohhh what a creative solution😅😂
There is just one word and one way to describe this arrangement The word is GOOD. IT'S so good to see creativity foster family continuity and micro community, togetherness. The children have no idea just how much they will benefit and be nourished by this endeavor. The Host was such a saint.
wow this is such a cozy area. I hope they make wonderful memories with events and holidays here. I feel that this setup up works best for tight knit families and it shows that they are that. I hope granpa could've talked alot too but he know what he's doing :D
Amazing concept ! Great to see them take a positive perspective on the housing situation in the Lower Mainland. And a very efficient use of space too. Curious to see how this concept could help build communities, assuming the individual owners wouldn't all be family.
Lol I like how she explained how they tried to make their house fit into the neighborhood by matching the houses across the street.. then it showed that gaudy house next door to them that sticks out like a sore thumb.
@@ashishpatel350 But the point is local regulations and bureaucrats actually prevent you to "build it as you want." This family went to great efforts to get not only official approval but all their neighbors to approve their design so it would "fit in." But then the owners of the house next door (which looks like a new build) somehow got permission for a design that doesn't "fit in." So it's valid to wonder how that could have happened.
I love this! Our multi-generational family has a similar set up we are all next door but in single family homes. The benefits and rewards of family being close together are amazing.
We live in Willyaroo South Australia a small rural village in the beautiful Adelaide Hills. Our setup is similar but we have 1.5 acres with two houses,a big one and a small one. Three generations of the same family.
One more point. I love how independence was considered. I once stayed in the basement when my dad was 90. If i would have had my own boundary, it would have been awesome. BTW my regular box in the sky was getting rainscreened and it took 13 months. I was happy to be away from the noise. I also worked nights
I love these tiny neighborhood concepts, was very surprised to see how different the inside of each house was, they all have their own character. Would miss a safe place to park my car out of the elements, but they definitely are making it work!

Personally, I think multi-generational housing is the future. Especially with how expensive everything is. We are definitely stronger together!
What is DADU ? .. thx.
This couple is so generous and thoughtful toward their family. It's beautiful to see. So many just hoard wealth and don't share.
What is also great, and makes this possible, is the city/municipality that allows the lot to be separated in this way. I think most cities are quite restrictive, and hopefully that will change. This family is living together and taking care of its own. Love it.
When it’s done right. Absolutely.
Don't worry about that, they will raise property taxes for everybody else!
It always happens in Lower Mainland, especially in Vancouver!
However, thank you for sharing this, I enjoyed it very much.
@@Ellie.12866 Nitpick: It's a chute. We had one when I was growing up too.
Really fantastic design and architecture. At the end of he day it all about design, not fancy finishes. The contrast with the huge single family house next door is interesting.
Could be they have the same living arrangement
Thank you so much for this one Kirsten. That's a lot of wisdom and generosity from this woman/mother/grand-mother who carry the world on her shoulders. Yes I think many people will have to accept that a house should first be used to meet our needs not to show off our wealth. From Montréal. Canada.
Tremendously innovative and thought out. As a 73 grandma of 4 I’m envious, and grateful for this family.
Pure generational Love. Does not come by chance, requires work of all family members. What a blessing for your family 💯❤❤
Yes, definitely works for the kind of family unit that likes to be around one another. I wouldn’t want it with my Mom who is a narcissist.
Yes! This is one, big happy family! God bless them.
This is beautiful. This is what family is for, to live together for ever.
This is such a refreshingly authentic video. Feels like a conversation with your own relatives.
This is a fabulous video! I loved seeing the multi-generations living so close. Yes, back in the day, this was common.. I love that the ever so young 94 yr old great- grandmother is able to share in this adventure.
I love this. What a great use of space. The family is close, but have their own private places. Wonderful for the children.
That woman seems like an incredible person. This is what family is! I wish more people had a woman like her in their family. The world would be a much better place.
what a wonderful video & idea! the family seems so warm & peaceful too.
This. Is. Brilliant. How lucky for the children.
They all seemed pretty happy with the setup. And that seems like an ideal granny setup.
Very practical. Even more impressed that the planning process got a bit of homework done too which smoothed its implementation.
I love how she speaks about the house with so much passion 😊 You can tell she's so proud and happy 😊😊
This is a dream my niece has, for the whole family to be on one piece of property. So good for everyone. So smart, love this.
🙏🏾 This video …. My heart is full ! This family is intentional and beautiful! Great grandmother is so Humble and lively !!!! I want this for my parents and children!!!
Austin, Tx
Kirsten Dirksen never disappoints with her videos, every one of them is well done and fantastic.
This is beautifully done! For families that want each other in their lives! Thank you!
The social aspect of this development is precious! Thank you Kirsten!
Brilliant plan & impeccably executed. I love the respect for the neighbors & getting their buy-in. So many don’t appreciate that - and it only takes one neighbor to object & stop the whole thing. It would be a dream to live generationally like this - especially if you have a healthy family- good boundaries. ♥️👍🏼
Such a great concept and a fun family to visit! You can really see their joy in living so close together.
Excellent idea, and it was nice that the city allowed it.
love the idea! would be very challenging for many I think as we are out of practice living so close. accountability and honesty are frightening qualities for families struggling with substance use and or financial difficulties. could really heal generations given the chance.
I am sure this family won’t have any mental health issues. As all generations are surrounded by love , care and wisdom. Kudos
Correct! You see many lonely people talking to themselves these days...scary stuff
I love everything about this family's living arrangement. What a beautiful way to honor, cherish and protect every generation!
Good Design …. Good morals to keep family together …. The son John is an instructor for a building course with BC housing. I recognized his voice in a second.
Wonderful! To have family so close, in a beautiful setting what a blessing!
Wow! Absolutely fantastic use of space . And independence for the entire family❤
This is great. It doesn't seem intrusive to their neighbours, and the little houses have lots of room for off street parking. We live in BC with grown children as well and worry how they will afford their own places to live...
Wow. So much respect for this couple and the vision they had for multiple generations of their family. Other boomers need to take note.
Well, if you want your family to stay close... this would be an absolute dream scenario for my mother:)
@@readyfuels17 boomers and Gen x believed in the promise of Canada . One job one house grandchildren. Stolen by corrupt facist politicians. #trudeaufortreason
Wow! What an absolute solid 94 year old. She is so present, active and bright at that age.
This is a wonderful, modern, inventive, multigeneration family and build. God bless them and keep them!
That's so awesome......what a great plan to achieve affordable housing and bring families together. Need to do that in the US.
What an awesome setup! My wife and I have done something similar and have a sibling next door, FIL living with us, and my parents on the same block. It tremendously cuts down on common stresses of having older parents and children.
My mum and aunts, all in their 80's, live in adjoining townhouses. Makes taking care of them and each other so easy and built in support.
Cheers!
This is such good idea, I always think Canadian are very creative and generous folks.
What in God's world makes this creative in any particular way this is beyond ...... It's like saying how do you lose weight and somebody responds just eat less food ....ohhh what a creative solution😅😂
@@pavelow235 good lord you have bad energy
@@pavelow235who shit in your cereal champ 😂. Be nice. It costs nothing.
There is just one word and one way to describe this arrangement The word is GOOD.
IT'S so good to see creativity foster family continuity and micro community, togetherness. The children have no idea just how much they will benefit and be nourished by this endeavor. The Host was such a saint.
What a concept! Family helping Family. Many blessings to this wonderful family. 🙏
wow this is such a cozy area.
I think this is every grandma and grandpa’s dream, to have all their grandkids and kids live close by and have family interaction 🥰❤️💕
Lots of love on that property. Priceless.
Lovely culture to maintain this closeness. Loved that she acknowledged how being close to family is a rare and special type of wealth
What a great use of space & everyone is nearby. What wonderful parents to think up such an amazing plan!
Lol I like how she explained how they tried to make their house fit into the neighborhood by matching the houses across the street.. then it showed that gaudy house next door to them that sticks out like a sore thumb.
who cares? its your property build it as you want.
That's your idea of gaudy? Not mine. It looks quite nice to my eyes, and I bet it's gorgeous inside too.
@@ashishpatel350that's not how societies work bud. There's far too many selfish, stupid, harmful people in this world. Hence regulations.
@giiiddyup I bet that's what helped them pass, going and talking to the nabours
