In Ilioupoli, a quiet, residential district south of Athens in Greece, Point Supreme Architects were tasked with converting a cold basement storage space into a functional studio apartment. Situated on the bottom floor of a multigenerational building, Ilioupoli apartment is intended as a future home for the family’s younger children, keeping the family together for longer while allowing them their own spaces. Previously an entirely open concrete room, the architects divided the space by extending the existing enclosed toilet into a full bathroom, adding an entryway partition screen and planter, as well as curtained sliding glass doors to enclose the bedroom. The home is further divided by colour, with the kitchen featuring a deep maroon laminate, a full size fridge as well as a custom island bench that opens on all four sides for storage. A contrasting bold blue bathroom is visible from the kitchen through a window in the wall between the two rooms that also allows for the flow of light. Division through flexible partitions, colour and materials creates a space that feels larger and more varied than it is, ensuring even basement storage can become a comfortable home.

I understand the principle that drives designers to use a lot of neutral colors/whites in maintaining a minimalist home. It really does make sense especially for small spaces. But! I am absolutely amazed when designers are able to incorporate color in this way because it gives so much life to a home and defines zones effectively without resorting to the default color scheme for minimalist homes. I wonder if this really is 55sqm, it feels much bigger.
Totally agree. These colours aren't obnoxious and in your face. they fit the space perfectly.
The high ceiling seems to make all the difference.
I love that this space is a little more "cluttered" too. It looks like a place someone actually lives in!
I agree, mostly. Only the colour of the kitchen is slightly out of tune. IDK...
One of the best, intelligent, contemporary, and looks so much bigger
I love this channel but I find it odd that people in small spaces don't ever seem to want a comfortable chair or couch.
I was thinking the same. Probably the third or fourth video where I thought something like “swap that built in bench for a proper two to three seater sofa and I’m sold!”. In this case those two carver chairs. Or add an additional low line sofa under the book shelf.
I know right… the majority don’t. There’s comfy seating that doesn’t take up space. I’ve just come. To the conclusion that people go to and from the dining room seats to the bed.😅
I was thinking in myslef and I work and watch movies/series in my computer. I own a sofa but never use it and if I want watch something more comfortably I go to the bed with the ipad. I think that this can be related with the devices? But regarding to the video, maybe the chairs are a provisional solution since the space allows a 2 site-couch.
I was thinking the same thing. Who can sit in those chairs for a couple hours watching a movie? I would need something more comfy to lounge.
I agree where do you kick your shoe off and relax!
I wish Never Too Small would also show how much these renovations cost. The space may be small, but all that customization and high quality material would cost a lot.
The living area more like a waiting room doesn't look comfortable at all, but apart from that I think it has some good ideas and personality.
Thought the same. But it is probably great design form someone who like to invite people for diners :P
Though there are only 2 seats in the living area, surely the chairs from the dining area can provide an area to socialize...
And yet, my preference would be to be to have
three "loveseats", for more comfortable gathering areas.
Mediterranean cultures usually gather around a table, not so much in a "living room" - even the term is a foreign one in Spanish, for example. People don't mind watching TV while eating/drinking at a table (maybe the owners didn't ask for a sofa!). Our "needs" depend on the culture we're immersed in.
@@TriviRocks But the projector screen isn't located so you can comfortably watch it from the dining table or kitchen either
The colors are crazy and what an impressive variety of textures and finishes. The place feels so alive.
Ah yes the comfortable living room, with two chairs and a coffee table, peak comfort for watching movies.
I’d definitely switch the chairs with a couch!
I feel like the closet space is far too big and something could have been done here for a more comfortable living area :)
the space for the closet seemed huge, id make that into a living room
🙃with all that thought put into a ceiling-mount projector & retractable screen.
Yep it's "waiting room at the doctor" vibes
I think this is beautifully done. Personally I would replace the two chairs with a small but comfortable sofa and change the bathroom color and/or decoration.
I would say the colour scheme of the bathroom is a nod towards the sea. Something many Greeks hold in high esteem.
I was going to comment the exact same thing. I love this look overall, but would need a more comfortable seating area. I like the color scheme of the bathroom, but would want richer materials. Maybe blue tiling.
Absolutely, everything is beautiful except that pale blue bathroom. No texture, just blue paint, reminds me of a warehouse bathroom in the 80s. I’m Greek and that blue bathroom is a hard no.
This is easily a standout from many spaces featured in this channel so far. The use of multi color and multi texture is charming and refreshing from a typical minimalist approach in this kind of small space. There are many parts that are left untouched especially like the exposed concrete texture on core pillars that add significant character to the space. Also the bathroom in that light sky blue is gorgeous. I love it. Kudos to the designers ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The exposed concrete is unexpectedly beautiful and adds warmth and texture to the space. The cave like cosy atmosphere just goes to show that even poorly lit spaces, if designed well and with a good understanding of colour, can be inviting and intriguing even.
Amazes me how every space that this channel showcases is fantastic. I'm moving into a ~65sqm (~700sqft) apartment later this year and, although I won't be able to do as much modification as NTS architects do, every single video inspires me and gives me ideas on how to make the smallish space mine!
same, such inspiration!
65sqm is small?? 😂
This is the least basement-looking basement apartment I've ever seen. Light, bright, and lovely. And seems so spacious for the size!
I have seen dozens of Never Too Small episodes, and this is the first one I really, really like! They used COLOR, not just white or plywood brown! I also loved the use of plants, especially the vine woven into the entry divider. The only "fail" was the two very uncomfortable-looking chairs in the "living room." A small cushy sofa would have been a better choice.
Love this one - only thing I would change is to swap those uncomfortable looking chairs for a sofa - I couldn't sit on one of those for the length of a movie! Kitchen is really nice though.
i looooooove this and the emphasis on the entryway! as someone who has always taken their shoes off before coming into the home, it's always bothered me to see designs where there's no dedicated space to store shoes/contain tracking in dirt, so this design really suits me!
same, i also like the entryway a lot! perfect size to park a bike, too. i hate hanging them on the wall.
Nice aesthetic, but i think they really missed a trick with the layout here.
So much space is reserved for the closet room, that could have been used for a snug living space with a corner couch.
They can’t be serious, thinking anyone would sit and watch a full movie on that projector sat in those seats!
This channel has such a calming effect on me - whenever I feel anxious I watch these videos. I’m not even close to being an interior designer and yet I’m so grateful for this channel
The kitchen is materialised in..... Let's take a moment away from admiring the creative design etc etc, and just appreciate the wonderful narration of the designer/architect (presumably in a second language). They are talented on so many levels. Love it 😘
it seems like everything in this space just trying to stand out separately instead of blending into each other seamlessly, and yet, it works! this space has so much personality also so homey. perfect to entertain in and lovely to spend a whole day in, being a homebody. brilliant.
This redesign is probably one of my favourites ever. I normally love the more minimalist and simplistic designs but these materials, those brown glossy tiles! ✨ reflecting the sun light and next to the bare concrete, with the rest of the mixed materials and furniture and colours in the room. It all look so well put together.
Such a great and comprehensive piece of design!
Somebody finally using colours & textures to caress and soothe the mind and the heart
Cute. Who would say this apartment is a semi-basement! I would not have imagined a basement like that could be turned into such a nice place. Congratulations to the visionary minds! 👍
I love most of this, but it seems odd to have such a large dining table and a miniscule living room area. Does no one want a couch?
For a young adult this seems like a really nice space except for the living room. Who would want to come home and relax on two formal wooden chairs? Could easily put a comfy two seater couch in the same area. Odd choice compared to the rest of the space.
Finally architecture which introduces the beautiful textures of cork for its wonderful sound insulation. Sound insulation is rarely addressed & it needs to be!
Love the colors and openness. The bathroom is a blast of mood inducing loveliness. Like being underwater.
This space might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s undeniably beautiful! The different partitions they’ve arranged throughout the space allows for privacy without feeling congested or closed off; most have some form of transparency, so the space still feels open and fluid. I’ll definitely be citing this for inspiration when I move in a few months.
I really like the design of the shoji inspired sliding door design that doubles as a wall and a bookshelf. Visually appealing yet, simple, and not tacky.
I love this space, it doesn’t even feel small. It feels open and breezy.
I would be happy to live in that beautiful apartment. I love how the whole house is divided for every member of the family. Another great NTS property, they just keep getting better. x
The sharing of the entire building among three generations is terrific! (Not without a few difficulties, I am sure, but practical and loving on the whole!) 👍🏼😎✌🏼
this home feels so cozy and nostalgic for some reason
Love this design and I'm ok with the lack of "lounge room". I've noticed for me personally, I'm spending less time in my lounge room and have debated getting rid of our TV. Our high use areas are definitely the kitchen and bedroom so this layout and style would work well for me and my husband in Sydney
this space is a real winner, what a vision of perfection. the kitchen is enough to make me swoon, and the rest of the apartment takes it above and beyond!
One of the few spaces I could see myself living in comfortably! It always amazes me how small they usually make the kitchen. But this kitchen feels larger and more useful than usual! I would definitely swap those two chairs for a small comfy couch. I do wonder if it would've been easier to put the projector across from the bed which people are more likely to watch TV from in a smaller space. Other than that, it's pretty perfect. A nice sized closet area, a sitting area when you come in. Love it!!
I love this! It feels like home - not overly styled. I appreciate those too, but something about seeing a home I could realistically live in is special ;)
Moreover, the long-term scheme, with grandparents and parents in the building above, is so loving and practical! 👍🏼😎✌🏼
Lovely basement apartment, didn't even look like a basement, loved the entrance way with the climbing ivy and the bedroom door. Well done.
Am I the only one who thought "What kind of living room is that??" Looks like a waiting room.
There are many books and a projector, but nowhere to sit and lay comfortably to use those things. It's really weird.
I'd personally put the living area in the corner where the sleeping is now, and move the sleeping to the closet area.
But of course everyone has their own wishes!
I love this apartment - apart from changing the lounge area to incorporate actual comfortable seating :) Well done to the designers.
Magically, you succeeded in making perfect color combination into the space. I luv it.
This is by far, the best designed apartment I've seen on this channel!
I love the whole concept behind this refit, from the endeavour to keep the family together, to creating a unique, edgy space. It has a rawness about it that can't be replicated, thanks to the reuse of materials. I really enjoyed this episode 😊
I love this design so much, especially on how they separated the spaces! I imagine my dream small house to still have boundaries for each room. This design is a good example.
This may be my favorite space featured, so far. I love the glass bookcase wall, the Japanese inspiration, the tile floors, the bedroom area, the kitchen... Everything in this special space is beautiful. I would love to live there.
I like it very much. Coulours where we need them to be, divers materials, style. It's cosy.
This is lovely. Bright, sunny and sociable, it doesn't feel like there's any compromise.
I'm glad to gradually see more and more greek apartments/ ideas in this channel, and so far I've been trully impressed by all of them!
In this one, I really liked the entrance space and the tasteful decoration of the bedroom. I'm thinking though that these two wooden chairs in the living room wouldn't be so comfy, even if I find them kind of elegant, and I'd look for more character in the bathroom too. Altogether, loved the design and thank you for sharing :))
I really like a designated entry way where you can put on shoes and have a little coat rack/hooks. The one here keeps the space open and doesn't block off any light, while also providing that separation.
So much visual interest without being overwhelming in the slightest. Such a great space.
Now this is colour done right! I'd move into this place in a heart beat!
For a tiny apartment, it has so much space. There's a lot of space to host people and it's so colorful. On top of it, you can recreate pretty much everything in most loft-like spaces.
I love it. I would replace the chairs with a comfortable sofa, but I would keep the rest. I love that 70s-80s feeling without the midcentury cliches.
lets talk about video quality - wow the clarity of the images so crisp and beautiful interior lighting and the drifting motes of dust -poetry
Never Too Small is one of my favorite channels all the spaces and the stories behind them is just amazing.
Great looking house. I always found completely white/ plywood walls in houses rather blend, I love these kind of colourful, lively houses. Bonus points for not being too organized!
Great to see more Architects work in Greece, there are thousands of small apartments crying out for a renovation, greetings to all from the island of Crete!
I can feel the good vibes of this project. Its sober, intelligent and secure.
I love the bedroom! The cork wall and the blue curtain makes it seem cozy and airy! I'm not usually into bright colored items else than white so I'm a bit startled but the color really pops and brightens up the whole house!
Also love the metal shelf. It's thin so it doesn't stand out so much but it can hold quite a lot of weight!
Love this! It has a 70s library vibe that I can appreciate! Would absolutely live in that space.
Even though I love japanese aesthetics, I loved everything EXCEPT the japanese "touches" : that partition doesn't really talk to me and the curtains hanging from the ceiling are giving more than a surprise. Apart from that, the kitchen is stunning, i loved the dining table, the cork wall, the floating nightstands... Gimme a sofa by the window, change that entryway and i move in tmr! :)
Small spaces done well are the true Grand Designs.
This looks like a unique and cozy place to live! I especially liked that Japan-inspired plant wall partition. A basement can be challenging to brighten up, but they really managed it here. Thanks for sharing your creativity with us!
Stunning pallets and space use is thoughtfully done. Also love how bright everything looks after the initial picture of the space
I love all the warm colors in this apartment.
I love how the minimalism of the space does not take away from it's earthiness feel
ΜΠΡΑΒΟ ΠΑΙΔΙΑ! By far one of the best featured of the channel. It's so greek, so modern and cozy!
Have to say, this one is not my cup of tea at all. I really felt the potential from the initial pictures of the place and started to imagine an interior myself. I wonder, why people would not contrast the exposed concrete with a bright, natural wooden floor instead of using tiles.
I love the exposed concrete but it conveys a rather heavy and cold mood already, which is perfect to add some playful but still elegant, warm and rustic elements to it. I think the tiles are just too much for this place.
Also, combining the living room with the dining space adds some kind of uneasiness and a busy mood to a place for relaxing. Would have put the bed where the closets are and the living room where the bed is with sofas oriented towards the wall, etc. Still cool place.
The use of tiles on the floor instead of wood is not to my liking either, but this is the traditonal approach to floors in Greece, also in Spain, Croatia, Turkey and Morocco. There are some functional aspects to it. The proximity of the beach means a lot of sand will inevitably end up in the house, so tiles are easier to keep clean. The other reason for the tiled floors has to do with temperature and humidity control because it really gets very hot and humid in Athens in July, so much so that wooden floors would quickly become mouldy considering the lack of air circulation beneath a floor. Then, the tiles are naturally colder and help regulate body temperature when walking barefoot during the summer.
@@AnaMatei Makes sense, thanks for the clarification. In that case, I would have probably used natural stone flooring in anthracite color to enhance the cave mood and contrast it heavily with wooden furniture and other elements.
@@macheifach True, there are better tile options on the market.
I felt exactly the same. Also the small tiles together with the japanese divider and other square stuff makes the room look too busy.
There´s just too many rectangular grids with a technical note overlaying each other.
I´also opted for a wooden floor but I totally see Ana´s point! Just a uniform floor or bigger tiles could do the job. A bit more matte rather than glossy - and a grout with not too much contrast to tiles would also help…
For a couple, this isn’t exactly a tiny apartment. But it’s nicely done! Good balance of style and practicality. Just wonder if they really sit on those carver chairs for hours at a time to watch a movie.
The reason why this seems like a big area is bcoz of lack of dividing walls and rather having an open space plan. That in itself already saves a lot of space in the apartment. About the chairs, honestly i wonder that too. I would've rather preferred them to just place a comfortable 3 seater couch in the living area instead of those two chairs and they could watch a movie from there comfortably instead.
@Only Me oh yeah that could be it too. For different places the definition of small and big will vary. I didn't think of this bcoz in my city this is a small house which would be considered only for one person or maybe two people if they're willing to adjust
@Only Me I agree 55sqm is not at all tiny. In Spain or France 55sqm is a pretty decent size appartment for a couple if you live in a big city or a smaller city with high housing demand. I used to live in France with my ex and we first had a 45sqm appartment in the city center of Grenoble and it was fine for the two of us. Now I live alone with my cat in Madrid in a 35sqm studio and the only thing I wish I had it's a couple of extra walls to physically separate the bedroom form the rest.
Not all humans like to watch movies/TV for such a long time! It isn't our favourite pastime..
Chairs are better for your body posture, too.
This is so well done! It feels like a proper house not a basement. Some of the areas they prioritised aren’t what I would have chosen for myself but I can really imagine it working well!! I questioned why the wardrobe area was so large but I like how it leaves some open floor space or even room to add a second bedroom if it’s ever needed. Perhaps it’s a dream come true for someone who loves fashion! I love how colourful it is, especially the blue bathroom. If I could pick the bathroom up and put it in my own house I would 🩵
I really love the color and light in this space- very bright and vibrant. The storage is versatile and not always hidden. The “living” wall is fun too. Much like other comments, I too would prefer a nice sofa especially with such a nice projector screen. I really like the large table in the room; perfect for entertaining and for a home office.
I have always been enamored of Yayoi Kusama’s art. What a revelation to see how well it works in a small home.
I like all the different spaces that open up and close into each other. I also like the use of dividing walls and shelves where you can peek into different areas. So much potential to change up and customise to your own liking. I could definitely call this home : )
The materials used here really brightened up this space. The kitchen and bathroom are my favorite. Great job designers.
A great transformation of a basement space into a lovely apartment. The dividing walls and shelves and plant trellis and doors letting light in or closing off with curtans, a great idea, giving it a feeling it is bigger than the sq m you have. Others have already commented on how they'ed rather have had a sofa or comfortable armchairs and a smaller or pull-out dining table. I would agree.
Love the conversion. I personally would rather a couch instead of the two uncomfortable chairs with the coffee table. I also didn't love the blue of the bathroom, reminds me too much of public bathrooms. Really lovely reno overall though
Very inspiring! true that colours, materials and even the exposed concrete make a very natural and warm space. Certainly, not an obvious apartment.
I love the entryway. It’s genius -keeps the mess of shoes, coats, bags etc under control
The kitchen area is really beautiful. But if I were to live there and since the kitchen-island is so generous in size, I would have used it as a dining-table as well, in which case I would have extended the top of the island a little beyond its base so that it would create room for legs when seated.
Beautiful ideas that I will keep in mind: wooden partition & planter, the top windows in the sleeping area & different size curtains creating the feeling of a bigger space.
I was thinking the same! : that way, skip the big dining table and have more space for a comfy sofa and / or armchairs. Why such a big screen? why not a TV on a swivel that can be turned to whatever part of the room you are in?
I would LOVE if you guys would record sound in these apartments so we could hear what it's like to be in them. It would give us such a more complete sense of the place!
And the Japanese separation is fabulous! I've seen it in a few videos and photos the last month, and it really grows up every space. Stylish and calmly already.
I love this space, the vibe. It feels so comfy to me, I'd love to live there.
I love how warm the colors are!
My favourite episode of NTS so far.
I love this space. It's so calming and relaxed.
Gorgeous, but they could’ve given the living area so much more love
-I wish they turned off the light so I can see the cave feeling of the space.
-I love the steel cabinet placed on the divider.
-the floor tiles are amazing!
-cork cladding is so cool and light
There is a suprising amount layering in this apartment that is very coherent and avoids feeling cluttered. Paradoxically the multiple layers gives the illusion of a much bigger space, almost like a stage set. I love the use of colour everywhere except in the bathroom, which would not put me off living here. A great small design!
I would have a more comfy seating area but I do love the cork wall (plus you can pin things to it like a massive pinboard)
I’m usually not a fan of so many different mixtures of flooring - particularly in small spaces - but they did an exceptional job with all of the materials, flooring included. Love this quirky and compartmentalized space!
I LOVE this apartment! Its so beautiful and functional. A keeper!
I would have moved the bedroom to the back where the closet is (more private and dark for sleeping, plus closer to air con), moved the lounge to where the bed is and have a comfortable sofa (so you can actually look out at the view/ enjoy daylight), and used proper storage units/ wardrobes to separate spaces/ zones to maximise use of the room. Also could have used all kitchen walls for kitchen storage, and turned the centre island into storage plus group seating
THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVOURITE HOUSE EVER FEATURED HERE. I would live there in a heartbeat!
What a beautiful space. I just love seeing so many cleverly used bookcases in these smaller homes.♥
It goes to show that your home is "Never Too Small" to have room for books!
…so well done…and yay to realizing that color can also create zen/interest/peace…really like the kitchen…
There is light coming only from one side of the apartment and they put projector screen just opposite to the windows? Wow. I'm so impressed
Beautifully done. Love everything about the use of space, light and colours. 👌❣️✨🙏Thank you for sharing ✨
I don't like concrete, large amounts of metal, cork, floor tiles, red and especially brownish red, open floor plans and japanese style. And despite all of that, I really like this appartment. That is well done, I am amazed!
I love this one so much!! The colors, the materials, it feels like home!
This is my favorite Never Too Small apartment thus far! Love the use of space, colors, and dividers. I'd live here!
I liked the eclectic and rustic style of the apartment as well as the light shining through. For me personally, I would struggle with not having a true living room. Having two simple chairs like that with a small coffee table felt like a waiting room and not a place where one could entertain. At almost 600 square feet and almost a perfect square I feel like more could've been done with the space. But perhaps this is what the client wanted.
Maybe this one is my favorite NTS featured project from all time
I love this design so much! It really does not look like such a small space.
