This is a parallettes workout for basic strength and flexibility. All you need is a decent set of parallettes and you can use the push routine outlined in this video to get started. The workout includes a detailed warm-up, strength sets (main workout) plus a bonus HIIT cardio superset you can use to burn fat if that's one of your goals.
Although parallettes are more used in gymnastics, you'll also see them used by fitness enthusiasts for calisthenics, CrossFit and more. I recommend buying parallettes that meet your needs. If you're looking for something affordable, versatile and easy to travel with that allows you to learn all the basics, the StrongBlocks are the way to go (see link above). If you're looking for something bigger but sturdier that you can learn inversions with in the future, something larger like these Ultimate Body Press parallettes are a good option but cost a bit more: amzn.to/32JlMfD
This is the outline of the parallettes workout in the video...
Warm-up:
• Cat Cow (1 min)
• Toe Touches (1 min)
• Hamstring stretch (2-3 min)
• Core Compression (1 or 2 sets)
• Straight-arm plank
• Reverse plank
Strength Sets with 3 min rest between:
• current L-Sit Progression (5 sets)
• Pendulum Swing (5 sets)
• Deep Push-Ups (5 sets)
HIIT Cardio (optional):
• Toe Taps (1 min)
• Mountain Climbers (1 min)
(perform both 1-min intervals back-to-back, then rest 60 sec and repeat. Aim for 4-5 cycles or more)
I hope this workout is challenging for you. Stay tuned for an intermediate level parallettes routine where we'll learn bent-arm handstand and tucked planche!

These types of exercises are much more difficult than lifting weights for me.
Lloyd Christmas deffo agree. Great video.
Lloyd Christmas me too. That's why I love learning them :)
Then put more weight on the bar if it’s getting to easy or do it more under tension
Its not hard. Watch your words, you want to be more confident than that if you want to change your body. Start with holds, get strong in negitave movements and micro manage works wonders too ...Do your max set when ever you get time during your day to bust some out then wait awhile (1-2) hours and repeat max set. Do this all day long. I wrote all this because it hurts my heart to see someone saying parallets are too difficult. They are more like a adrenaline rush once u get started. U dont have to be great to get started ... You have to get started to be great! 💪🔥👍
@Juan Rosales 🙏thank you 😉
My parallettes literally arrived yesterday, great timing
Perfect! Glad to hear you made the investment. Parallettes are a great tool for the arsenal 👍
Legit picked mine up and hour ago! Amazing timing!

I had paused the video at 1:31 when my wife walked into the room. She wondered what type of videos I have started watching.
The Don Hahahaha omg 😂😂
I just got pallets and instinctively did pendulums and swing into L sit. It's so fun.
Incredible, fitness tips from Johnny Sins himself! I love your work man, in all honesty there's a LOT of advice I'd like to get from you.
In all seriousness, great content I learned how to work on the parallettes because of you!
I didn’t know how to even get to L sit! Thank you for your video. Great for beginners like me.
Well done. Simple and easy to digest.
Dude anytime I get a new piece of gear or am training a new progression. I come right to MTG. 👍
This was really cool, some great ideas here that I'll use -- I especially appreciate your structured, focused approach on hamstring flexibility, which has been a HUGE bottleneck for me ever since I started calisthenics, no matter what stretches I try.
Just got my parallettes- My god never realised how weak I am! super keen to improve fitness with these
Any progress?
Progress update?
Was planning to start working out with parallettes but was directionless where to start .Great video Thank you sir
Excellent tutorial Sir. Thanks VERY much. I happened to run into your site while searching for L-sit videos.
Very useful man ! I'll stay tuned for the next part. Thanks !!

Another great video. Many thanks.
Thanks for nice start for beginners.
Just found your channel and watch some videos. I like the way you explain. As a beginner I see many channels provide videos that are too advanced (clickbait?). But here you explain how to build strength, flexibility, and wrist strength slowly. Otherwise you'll just get injured or will not last in calisthenics.
Greetings from Indonesia!
Nice Johny Sins workout ! :)
it's him alright
A Serious question how to combine skills and workout in calisthenics and how many workouts should be? How longer it should be? Make a video on that....
Are those paralettes? They look as low as push up bars.
I bought some push up bars but realised they are at a slight angle. Does this make a different?
Great video, thank you!
This was super helpful. Thank you!
This is great! But how many swings are in a pendulum set? I didn't see it written down anywhere... up to failure?
Yeah, I always train to or near failure
@@MinusTheGym thanks!
I love these workouts! Do you have a workout that combines rings and parallettes?
Thanks! Great way to learn what muscles to use for a lot of these cool calisthenics exercises you see

Hey nice to see how your channel grows...good guy good content
How long is an avg person able to hold the forward and reverse planks?
Great vid Ryan as always 😋
my paralettes arrived today. cheers
Thank you for making this video! I love that you included some cardio into the end !
Strong blocks no longer available. Is there anything you can recommend today?
Great video as always! I've had parallets for a long time and used to use them everyday but kind of forgot about them, thanks for reminding me how enjoyable using them can be!
Awesome video! Great and informative.
Great video, super clear and helpful. Thanks a lot.
You are amazing!Thank you!
I would like to order the blocks/paralets but i am from germany😭😭😭😭😣 can i order it somewhere else..theres just us and canada
I subscribed to your channel... thanks for the content!
With pushups push the scapulas out when in the top position
that cat and cow progression 1:53 , your twin knows it better lol
Johnny Sins hahaha
Awesome video. Great instruction. Thank you.
Great video!
Static core exercises. Gotta love em.
I would like to thank you for taking the very important but quick second to mention how to properly position your hands at the beginning of the video. Its not something most people would put in their video. And I really like my wrists
How many pendulum reps per set would you suggest?
5-8 reps is a good range. Focus on developing control in the movement and getting the hips up when you bring them back. Use less momentum as you improve. It's more about quality than quantity with those.
i don't have the strongblocks but i do have the pushbar paralletes can i use that instead?
Im new to all this.i have bad shoulders when I do dips and push ups, any advise on how to approach calisthenics with these nagging issues?
Hi there. I recommend first working through the shoulder issues before working out hard so you avoid making the problem worse. You might want to check out my video on shoulder impingement. If your rotator cuff is getting pinched, this video will help. If it’s something else then I recommended getting checked by a physical therapist: Shoulder Impingement Fix For Rounded Shoulders
ruclips.net/video/OQneJR9gImI/видео.html
Thank you for video but last movement I dunno. Any video for progressing in handstand-wall push ups? They're extremely hard. I want a natural way to strengthen & build shoulder muscle.
I bought a set of parallettes on special, are they any good to exercise with if you have thoracic back injuries?
So this is basically a push/abs workout am I right? Or should I add some moves to make it an efficient push/abs workout?
Thank you 😊
Would this be an equivalent to push training? You know...everything that involves pushing...I tried it today and I’ll have to wait for for the pain to come tomorrow to see if it’s the same muscles as whenyou do push up workouts....I feel the belly is much more in this as well as the thighs...what about the triceps?
I alr have dip bar, should i buy paralletes?
I recently bought a pair of parallettes and I'm taking baby steps with it. Been following this and I'm making sure my hand grips in proper alignment, my body hurts, that's expected, but what's new is my knuckles hurt. Do you have any videos or any tips that help with that?
@Minus The Gym I'm wondering how many reps I should do when doing these exercices?
Im not sure what brand of parrellets I should buy or if I should get the low ones or higher ones?
Get both dude.
A doctor, a cop, an astronaut, a plumber, a pizza delivery guy, the mailman and now a calisthenics instructor...man is this guy skilled!😂
Joking aside, awesome vid!
One more question please. Regarding the pendulum, what is a set? Should i count a number of repetitions or set a timer? Thanks a lot
cinetici I count reps rather than timing. Also, on the pendulums it's good to focus on slowing it down and gaining control as you make progress.
I don’t know what parallettes are but I want in!
Shows how to not grip them
Proceeds to grip them incorrectly throughout his exercises
Right 😂
The parallettes seem to small for hands
I’ve just ordered myself some parralettes to start this kind of practice. However, I already know from my dance and yoga practice, my arms are a bit short in ratio to my torso. When I sit in an ‘L’ and put my hands flat on the floor by my pelvis, my arms are as straight as they can go, there is no access to a bend at my elbow to be able to lift my body in that position like most people do. Is this meaning I’ll have to adapt exercises or do it still work for anatomy like mine? I know it means I can’t really do certain asanas hence why I ask
Holy shit dude. I just found out about your Channel. And your Name is awsome😂
Im struggling to keep my arms straight when doing pendulums
Is there an intermediate video?
Great video.
Great video! Cant wait to see the next one!💪🏽
Hopefully you will see this but how many times a week can I max this ? I'm used to workout 4 light workouts for about 10mins and 4 regular- /heavy- workouts
3 or 4 times per week is good. Allow at least one day’s rest between sessions. If you try to do this on two consecutive days you’ll most likely not be fully recovered. Also, I made a 2nd video about pursuing the bent arm handstand on parallettes. I recommend that routine once this one becomes too easy:
ruclips.net/video/IT2-g8m8zCw/видео.html
@@MinusTheGym just made my first workout and I got in tucked L sit 18-20 sec for all sets and same for pendulum , real good workout
But I will probably do this for atleast a month before going to bent arm handstands
How much reps is a set?
Very cool
what are the best parallettes?
Tried the L sit, looks like my lower body is still sleeping haha, very humbling
Do i train these workouts 3 times a week?? for how many weeks? or do i do this like 3 times until i can begin that intermediate program?
3 times a week is perfect, do that until you'll be able to do harder exercises
Hey Ryan, curious as to what fitness goals you're training for these days?
ICheeekyI hey there. Currently I'm training hard to solidify my freestanding HSPUs (on the floor - not parallettes). I can get 1 or 2 reps in a set, but I'm arching badly. I'm trying to get those straight, solid and more consistent. I've also started training human flag but it feels like that will be a long journey :) Physique-wise I honestly haven't had any goals lately, but I plan to drop body fat soon, aiming for 8% or less, so I can make a video about how to lean out.
@@MinusTheGym Oh wow sounds awesome. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes with your journey!
And who knows, perhaps cutting down to 8% will allow you to do (or at least get very close!) to the human flag cause you'll be carrying way less weight!
How many reps for pendulums?
What paralleled do you recommend for a beginner intending to grow and do advanced workouts? The small ones look like you can outgrow them
The bigger sturdier ones if you plan on learning inversions. The small ones are great for traveling so you can do L-sits, planche work and have push up grips on the road, but I'd never recommend inversions of any kind on the small collapsible ones.
From 8" to 12" height paralletes gives you plenty of ROM for many exercises.
Can I use dumbells as substitute?
I suppose. They might be unstable and roll around, so be careful
@@MinusTheGym Thanks!
very difficult for me. I can't even lift my feet off the ground for 1 second. Do you have a routine for more beginners?
Start lifting your feet off the ground for 10s for 3sets. Start there.
I have the same paralleled! Amazon yeeee
Can you do another video of Gym equipments that you have?
Tuong Minh I made this video a while back in case you haven't seen it yet: ruclips.net/video/7w05hWAim-U/видео.html The only equipment I've added since then are a weighted vest and BaseBlocks trainer (I think).
It's my first time working with parallettes, and doing calisthentics, what is a good amount of time to wait in between each workout? In other words, is this an every other day type of thing, or every 2 days...?
Same as any workout consistency is key. I do a 3 days on 1 off 3 days on 1 off workout scheme
Made some from pvc
Aren't toe touches supposed to be really bad for your lower back?
Better stretch would be to lay on your back and bring your knees to your chest.
I have high paralettes. Can I try on those
Yeah but if you fall it'll hurt
DJrockSStar yep. High parallettes are actually easier for L-sit, tucked planche, etc. because there's more space between the bars and ground. Your core compression can be less developed. But be careful with inversions on those. If the parallettes are too high they could get wobbly, and tipping over in a handstand could be very bad.
@@MinusTheGym hey thanks for replying. You're right Lsit is easier. But I can only do a tucked one. Getting the legs straight is hard
@@DJrockSStar hey bro! L sit will get easier if u work on straight leg raises on a pull up bar. If it's still a bit hard for you, you can start by knee raises instead. When you work these up to about 15 a set start leg raises. Ofc dynamic training will only help, you still have to work on your statics.
Good luck, stay strong 💪💪👊
........ When and where is the kinda bars are they got like the way, you do??
like the paralyzes???
What were the parallettes you used at the start of the video? I’m looking to invest!
PsychoPrath the large ones? They're made by ultimate body press and I got them on Amazon: amzn.to/2vKyZdZ
Good content
I just made mine out of pvc pipe !
Same here ☺️
james pinto good luck with your training sir. Wish you the best of gainz
You can all do the exercises on parallel bars right?
Yes, these can all be done on p-bars instead of parallettes if you have access to them
Is this everyday workout?what about rest/recovery? Please comment, thank you
Christopher Moltisanti do it 2x or 3x per week on non-consecutive days. For example, Mon/Fri or Mon/Wed/Fri. It's also very push-focused, so you can do pull and leg workouts on the days between.
Hey Ryan..Can pull ups make my shoulders bigger??.. Or it's just for lats..
Pull ups arent great for shoulder building but will in fact use ur rear delts. But not enough for shoulder progression
So when I do a set of 10 push ups I have to wait 3 minutes to get back to do another set?
cinetici you don't have to, but if the sets are very intense (reaching muscular failure) then longer rests are good so you're as fresh as possible for each set.
In a nutshell, if your primary objective is gaining strength, long rests for optimal sets is best. Short rests are good for working on endurance and fat burn.
Thanks so much, this video is perfect
Perfect
Can anyone recommend a good interval app for the phone (android).
angelfoodcake1979 “seconds” is pretty good
Cheapest ones on amazon are 50 bucks. Off to Lowes to try my hand at building some lmao
just be careful. I'm personally not very handy with PVC and the ones I built collapsed while I was using them. Luckily it was just an L-sit hold - nothing inverted - but that's when I forked up the cash to buy professional ones lol
Minus The Gym thanks for the heads up 🙌🏼
he is definitely not johnny sins. johnny sins would never call that pose a 'cow pose'!!
Hello Ryan... i'm seeing your videos and i'm really impressive about your method of teaching workout, i like it so much, thank you for your videos it's really helpful, i started workout since a month ago and i want someone to direct and guide me to the right track and i'm really serious, i would be so glad and grateful if you be my master, i hope hear from you soon thank you again
