    I remember working in Airport Parking in Keflavík (the international airport) when this happened and we were told to look for a red, rental car with a specific number plate. Everytime we saw a red car, we made sure it wasn't the one we were looking for, before letting it get out of sight.
    I think the most scary part of all this (to me), is that she was kidnapped on the same street I'd been walking on down town in Reykjavík around the same time and her phone's last signal was literally around the corner from where I lived in Hafnarfjörður. I remember watching the story on the news next to my dad on the sofa, and he hugged me tight knowing, that this could've been me.

      Do like we did with my friends: we slept in a corner of the club LOL
      Some of our friends wanted to stay, we wanted to go because we were exhausted... even though we were exhausted we stayed, sat in a corner nearby our dancing friends, some of us half sleeping. And when our dancing friends got enough, they came to us and we all went back together.
      Back in college, we always walked everybody back home. We'd all go back together or split in two different big groups, we made a lot of big detours to make sure to take back home the drunkest ones first, and then bit by bit we split up until. At the end, it was usually a few guys left who didn't drink much (only a few beers), were used to the city and walked through every corners of it constantly, so they knew which paths were the safest ones. My city isn't too dangerous despite being big but there's still always a possibility.
      I remember once I told one of those guys "Oh, we just live a few streets away so we're fine, you live in the opposite direction, right ? You should just go straight back home, it's so late already" and the guy just wouldn't have it, he walked my friend and I back to the building, made sure we went safely inside, and then left.
      I'm glad I've almost always met people who are like that, who always make sure everybody goes home safely.
      I also have a friend and her friends who had to "walk" a drunk girl back home from far away because she was a very aggressive/violent person when drunk. She kept insulting them, hitting them, and didn't want them anywhere close. So they just followed her down the streets until they saw her get back home safely.
      It takes a lot of selflessness to still care about someone like that despite the fact they've hit, scratched and insulted you for a part of the evening, imo. A lot of people would just be pissed off and be like "Whatever, she does whatever she wants to, she's a big girl, not my problem anymore."

      Uber and taxi drivers have also raped and murdered people. There is always a risk. Walking isn't always the worst by far. The biggest risk to you as a woman is your spouse or sexual partner. Most women are murdered in a domestic violence situation by men they know and love. This girl in Iceland wasn't murdered by walking alone. She went to a bar with another woman, met some guys and got in their car where things went south. Her walking alone is immaterial to the situation.

    Here in Sweden "life in prison" is about that length. On paper, a lifetime sentence is an undetermined amount of years and you're supposed to sit i prison for "that long", but then after ten years on your sentence you can plea for a time determined(?) sentence, which you're looking at minimum of 18 years. That doesn't mean that every criminal sentenced to life sits even that long though, on average they only sit 16 years in prison. It's horrific, truly.

      i mean for violent crimes resulting in death or trauma i understand, but you gotta remember that for most cases rehabilitation is the better choice. it helps a lot with reducing crime rates for repeated offenses and saves a lot of money.l by virtue of reducing overall crime rates. i wouldn't ever take example on the USA though, those guys have the most inmates per capita in the world, kids and adults, it's a cruel industry in which innocent or redeemable people get crushed and can't ever reintegrate society properly so they have to turn to crime again and again. they don't have a very safe country either.
      i mean with those videos you only hear about the very extreme cases, not the general effectiveness of those systems. also good to remember that where prisons systems around the world adopted more humane measures, the recidivism rates dropped significantly, in norway it went from 70% to 20%. so yeah. restorative justice can be frustrating but it works a lot better than just letting criminals fester in cages on taxpayer's money. petty revenge solves nothing.

    • @SunshineSwears
      @SunshineSwears 3 года назад +1

      @@ysucae Of course, on one hand I'm proud of the justice system we have in the North, but it's honestly so awful to hear of a crime comitted and have the punishment not fit the crime. We had this debate in a "Ethics and sociology" class in highschool, and just a few paces away lies one of the highest security prisons in Sweden where several "famous" (in Scandinavia) murderers/chomos sat, among them Anders Eklund who murdered a girl that was about my own age when it happened back in 2008. They livestreamed her funeral, so it wasn't exactly easy to be unbiased, you know?

    • @emeryltekutsu4357
      @emeryltekutsu4357 3 года назад +3

      @@ysucae You need to take into account other things, too. Like if a country is homogenous, of course it's much simpler. Comparing what happens in Norway, a country of... 5 million? Also has a big problem with poverty but discourages talking about it.
      Taking that and comparing it to America, a country of 330 million with a constant massive influx of people and divided up into 50 states + provinces that can all be described very uniquely from each other... I find people try to make a lot of comparisons that don't work, because you can't assume that what works for a tiny place will work for a massive place with incredibly different circumstances.
      It is a lot to do with our political system, too. But not just ours. There is a push for a global economy, which is a push for a massive worldwide permanent serf class. The reason Democrat states do so poorly is that they want people dependent on government, which means you can't be doing well on your own. They destroy businesses and promise handouts in exchange.
      And the same thing happens with our prison systems. If you want to know why they are the way they are, just ask Kamala Harris why she purposely kept innocent people in jail and prisoners in jail for excessive amounts of time for cheap labor. It's a modern slavery system that politicians and elites want to have world-wide.
      But if you're buying bananas from Ecuador and goods from China, you can't really pretend that you're above the slavery system in the US. This slavery system expands far beyond the walls of our prisons and most of the first world, if not all of the first world, is in on it.

Even in daylight it is not always safe. I think just being alone seems to target predators. I never get targetted by men or women when I am with a trusted male friend.

You ended with stating Iceland is on your list not to miss the beauty and way of life along with images of that beauty. I don’t think I’ve noticed anyone else do that. Also, your noticing a pattern with short sentences seem to dishonor the victim’s life. Sensitive and shows great insight 👏👏👏💪👍 ❤️

    "In America most of these cases would be life sentences without the possibility of parole"?
    It's not nearly as cut and dry as that. Only about 1/4 of those sentenced to life will get it without parole in the US. The other 3/4 average around 15 years before paroled. As for the system as a whole, the recidivism in the US is almost double that of Iceland. The only country that mentioned that is close to the US is the UK. The US is one of the worst places to use as a model for setting up a prison system.

    • @Spamhard
      @Spamhard 3 года назад +3

      Glad to see a comment like this. Too many people in the comments saying how much better their American justice system is, yet seem to have no clue about it's actual rates. Between full sentences rarely being met, recidivism, high sentences for low crimes such as a possession of drugs, and the fact they use their prisoners for extremely low paid labour, I'd definitely not put US as a better system.
