@@tremblence What garbage are you smoking there? 27 years MINIMUM is not a "slap om the wrist" is more than 1/3 of someone's life base on the average life expectancy. Seriously. If you want to know how huge 27 years are just think of it this way. A baby born in 2000 will, most likely, have a career, wife and kids in 2027. Another 27 years, by 2054 and they would be 54. Likely a grandparent by that point. Another 27 years, by 2081 at the age of 81 they will be basically at the end of their life and have great grand children.

Really glad that you've covered this case.
I graduated from Hull University in 2020 and lived on the same street that Libby was sadly taken from. I mention this because I know it's easy to feel frustrated towards her friends for not going back with her, so I just wanted to provide some context. Hull (for the most part) felt safe. That area felt safe. There was definitely crime, but everything felt familiar. When I was there, Hull taxis were a big deal (no uber allowed, not sure if that is still the case). You'd find your favourite company and you'd stick with them for your whole time there. There were even silly debates between students on which taxi company was the best. So I completely understand thinking that your friend would be safe if you put her into a taxi that you trusted would get her all the way home and see she was safe. Whilst I'm a firm believer of never leaving a drunk friend alone, the nights events could have still played out the same way if they'd have left her at her door and parted ways to their own accommodation.
To prevent this from happening to other women, I think crimes such as voyeurism and public indecency need to be treated with way more severity. I think someone else commented something similar - these crimes are all about control and having dominance over others. Making people feel weak and helpless and enjoying their fear/anxiety. A lot of men who murder women have a history of these acts and you can see it in the Sarah Everard case too. The garbage who took away Sarah's life in such a gruesome way also committed an act/acts of public indecency before his crimes against her.
We need to take a good look at how we view crimes against women. Sexual harassment and intimidation isn't just creeps being creeps, or one off spurs of the moment. These crimes can and do escalate. They will want greater and sicker kicks if nothing is done to stop them.
Hopefully we can make big changes and ensure that this doesn't happen again, and that we do all we can to prevent these crimes from happening.
RIP to Libby and condolences to her family. Let's keep talking about these cases to ensure these women are remembered and with any luck we can make small changes for the better every day.

Thank you for providing the context that some of know, having grown up in college/university areas. In my day, it's was either taxi or walk (way before Uber, etc). In fact, most cabbies would walk you to the door or, at least, wait until you opened it.
I also agree that these "minor" sexual crimes need to be looked at in a much more harsh way. There are times where they are just some young person hoping to catch a look, not realizing how they are violating someone else. But I believe most lead on to worse crimes.

@Chris Sheridan I'm big on self-preservation at all costs. I take a lot of safety measures and encourage others to do the same. The thing is, as a woman, sometimes even the "safe option" feels like a danger. Myself and my friends have all experienced a dodgy uber/taxi driver at least once before, so even that feels like a risk if you're in an unfamiliar area. And we can't avoid going outside for fear of getting raped/murdered. Getting blackout drunk isn't a great decision obviously, but I think we have all been there at one point (guys and gals alike). You deserve the embarrassment and the sore head and your friends ribbing you, but you don't deserve your life being taken away by another. In this case, Libby was upset and she wanted to go home and she was asking for her mum. If this was any other average stranger in the street, they would have consoled her and tried to get in contact with her friends and called the police/ambulance. It's just tragic that she stumbled into this pos path. If this guy wasn't on the streets, she wouldn't have been murdered. In the case of Sarah Everard, her killer could have struck at any time of day because of him abusing his position in the police force. She got plucked from a busy, well lit street with plenty of traffic and I believe houses on either side too. She took the quickest route I believe, which is something also to weigh up as a woman. Which is safest and quickest? And sometimes there is no alternative route (or if there is, it's incredibly out of the way and actually would put you in more danger). When I lived in London, the only way to get to the tube to get to work was through a park. It had no lights and was just a proper crimewatch park honestly. But it was small. It would take 30 seconds to a minute to walk through it. I'd always try to have company or even adjust my work hours in the winter, but there would still be times I'd have to walk through it alone in the dark. If anything happened to me, I imagine there would be people wondering why I didn't go another route or why I wouldn't get a taxi. To me and the people living in that cul-de-sac, the answer would be obvious. But an outside perspective may struggle to understand. Anyway, I just wanted to provide some food for thought.

The only time I heard something like that I called 911. Probably saved an entire family from their teenage son who ate and entire sheet of synthetic acid. He had already stabbed his mother and sister who where trying to stop him from harming himself. When police arrived they surrounded the entire house with ARs and K9s, when they finally entered and removed the family members it was too late for the young man. The drugs pushed him over the edge psychologically and he cut his abdominal entirely open and then cut his throat. No one else lost their life. You NEVER KNOW. If you hear a scream out of nowhere, call 911.

@bvaldebenitom wasn't even my call, the mother screemed out the window, so I asked my friend sitting on the porch across the street with me, and he said, if he herad another he would. So I called. A few minutes later a young woman (the sister) came sprinting full speed out the door, down the street screaming call 911! I think she ran to a nearby neighbor she knew. From what I could see in that short moment her shirt was quite torn and a little bloody but nothing I felt I needed to chase after her for. Within minutes of that happening, the police had the entire block surrounded. I'm talking I could see at LEAST 50 squad cars on my street alone. It all fell quite after they made entry. When they brought the mother out she hysterically fell to the ground bleeding badly, I had learned later that week she was stabbed 3 times by her own son. Who then took his own life horribly.
It's a city inside of a very large Metroplex, I happened to work at a hotel that had a police officer there every weekend, so the following weekend I asked the one on duty if he could tell me what actually happened because I watched it unfold and was the one who made the 911 call, and since he knew me pretty well he shared what he knew about it. I was MINDBLOWN.

@M. Cousin see the problem with that is, normal people don’t kill people, sick twisted people do (I know there are cases of normal people snapping) but by and large people like the dude who did this, are sick animals who prey on people, saying to them don’t kill people isn’t the route to go, it won’t change them. However showing cases like this to young people and explaining to them
      1) don’t get so shitfaced you can’t walk straight is a decent idea
      2) if your friend is that shit faces don’t just send them home, take them home (while most of the time they will get home safe you don’t want the time they don’t get home safe to haunt you for the rest of your life, you can always go party another day, or go back that same day)
      3) always be conscientious about the Whereabouts of your friends even when you’re all in the club/bar etc. just because you’re in public doesn’t mean that a friend that is hammered won’t be lured away from the general public into a secluded area (drunk people are more trusting towards strangers and are more easily manipulated)
Moral of my post is, you can always have fun another night, you can never get rid of the guilt or party with a friend if they do become a victim, the party isn’t worth it, making sure your friend gets home safe is more important, even if they are a burden at that time and are a buzzkill for the rest of your group it’s always better to leave as a group then send the person home alone, even if you get them into a cab or Uber, they are drunk and if they act dumb enough might not make it home in said cab or Uber, and then will be stuck by themselves open to predators.
It’s much easier to teach young people that you can always go to another party/club/bar, go out another night, then it is to tell a sick predator not to prey on people.

The very fact they entertained the idea this cold blooded murder could be allowed BACK into society to live their life outside and possibly repeat is so absurd. A crime of this nature only has one way to deal with it, there is no rehabilitation, you don't even get that luxury because you decided to take a life that wasn't yours. A plague of certain political mentality that puts degenerates and criminals as victims is in many Western countries. I am not talking about due process or grey-area cases, I am talking clear-cut cases where the murderer is caught and it's undeniable, it's fact.

I'm deeply sorry that happened to you. How are you doing now? In spite of what another reply has suggested, the problem is not that you were drinking; the problem was that someone felt he was entitled to your body. He took advantage of you while you were in a vulnerable state and thought he could get away with it. There are countless layers of complex reasons why your attacker was empowered to do what he did. Know that none of them were a result of your own actions. You are not at fault. I sincerely hope you've heard those words before. I wanted to say them just in case you haven't. "Drinking too much" is such a shallow explanation for the cause of your trauma. Don't let anybody reduce your experiences to a morality lesson. You deserve infinitely better than that.

At some point you need to take responsibility for yourself and not blame the world around you though. It would be nice if there were no rapists, murderers, thugs, serial killers, terrorists etc in the world but there is and no amount of online virtue signalling will change that so just be accountable for yourself. Jesus, I'll never understand people who seem to get off on being a victim. You think men are not victims too? I used to walk around all the time at night feeling safe until a group of thugs sucker punched me and put their boots into me when I was on the ground. Did I cry woe is me? Blame the world? Lol no, who would care if I did?
I looked for more practical solutions including buying a car and
I planned my nights out better so I always knew how I was getting home and knew I wouldn't be running the gauntlet walking home drunk at 3am.
Sorry if this comes off as blunt but screaming at the 99.9% of men who are complete gentleman about the acts of a minority like the scumbag in this video is about does nothing but create division.
I get it, I love the idea that we could create this utopian society where people of all ages and gender could walk home freely as inebriated as they like without the threat of violence, honestly it sounds great!
But I can also tell you that world will *never* exist. As long as humans whether by nature or nurture have the capacity to do evil you will always have people amongst us with bad intentions - best you can do is try to protect yourself at all times.
