I can recall several occasions where I’ve willingly jumped into the back of my Uber vehicle without confirming their identity - it’s a mistake that is made all too easily. Technology has brought amazing things to our lives, but with alongside those new conveniences we must learn new behavioural practises in order to keep ourselves safe. In honour of Samantha Josephson’s life, her parents established the #WhatsMyName foundation which seeks to prevent their daughter’s tragedy from happening again. You can find more information on their website, www.whatsmyname.org
Have you had any experience with incorrect Ubers or taxis? What do you do to keep yourself safe? And will this story make you think more critically next time you order an Uber? Please share your thoughts below.

Yes one time I called a cab , my friends and I were drinking and ran out of alcohol so we got a ride to liquor store and back. When we pulled back up at home the driver hurried up and turned off the timer that showed the balance but I saw it and he added $5 so I didn’t tip . Had he not lied I would have hooked him up so he screwed his self by being dishonest

Sadly that's how so many of these cases go. Especially when you see if the same people preying on kids or other vulnerable people and just getting away with barely a mark on their record. They get out only to reoffend. Then they pull something like this and people will say "shame we saw this too late" without realizing that they obviously could have prevented it. I know the law can only do so much but we need harsher sentences for sex and assault charges. 8/10 these people move on to bigger more violent crimes especially when they get a small on the wrist. They feel like they can keep doing it because they don't feel harsh consequences and think next time it won't be much of a sentence either.

As a male who is 6 foot 3 and 250 lbs, strong and in good physical condition....
I was working out of town when we got shut down for 4 days. Most of the guys lived too far away to go home or just decided to stay in case we started up suddenly.
I had come up on the bus, with no vehicle but I only lived 4 hours away and there was lots of traffic going back and forth. So, I decided to try hitch-hiking home with a $50 bill in my hand to demonstrate that I'd pay the fuel for the trip. After a few hours without any luck, a guy stopped and picked me up. He immediately gave me the creeps but I was desperate for a ride to get home to see my wife and kids.
Soon after picking me up, he made a turn and headed the wrong way. I asked where he was going and he said he knew all the truck drivers in town and was sure he could get me a ride with one of them. He then proceeded to blast right through town without stopping and headed out on the highway. I had already planned what I'm going to do to this guy to save myself and I watched him like a hawk. He tried reaching under the front seat a couple times but when he noticed that I was watching, he turned the knobs on the heater controls instead. So I made a plan for how to get a gun away from him and use it on him if he produced one. So I never let his hands out of my sight as I suspected he had some form of weapon under the seat. We got way out of town and I saw a rest area with trucks in it. Right away I said very sternly, Alright you can let me out here...And I looked him straight in the eyes. He seemed taken aback and I had already made plans to grab the steering wheel and crash the truck then find the weapon under the seat and use it on him, if he didn't stop. He reluctantly stopped and let me out and then turned around and headed back to town.
Then I'm standing there realizing I was so intent on getting out of the truck, that I let him drive me way out of town and leave me there.
After the fact, I realized I should have overpowered the guy while he was driving and grabbed whatever I could find for a weapon and force him to drive me back to town. I was so happy to get out of the truck I never thought about the fact that I'm bigger and stronger than him and no cop on the planet is going to charge me for assaulting him when he drove me way out of town in the opposite direction from where I was going. So desperate to save myself from harm, I never thought of just assaulting him and taking control of the truck.
Now I got a taste of how a young girl feels when she is abducted. I only thought sensibly after I was out of danger.
One thing for sure, he pulled anything out from under the seat... I'd have immediately killed him with it.
Then I realized I should have just grabbed it myself.
If it can happen to an oil patch worker who could have knocked this guy out in a fist fight...it can happen to anybody. And this was a small town, nice farm town in northern Canada, not Los Angeles.
Think about that, and how quickly it can happen.

like anything else, costs money. Thin margins. Costs even more money for proper installation, proper recording/DVR/cloud storage, possibly a monthly fee. It can be a decent little investment and in a some cases, offers exactly nothing for the bar owner. A lot of bars like this closed up in the pandemic, very thin margins. We can’t just force expensive camera installation standards on private businesses.

Rowland also stabbed Josephson in her head with so much force that the knife went through her skull to her brain. And he stabbed her in the carotid, one of two main arteries that carries blood to the head. Many of the wounds, especially those in her right neck and right shoulder, were close together, most likely resulting from being rapidly inflicted stab wounds. Additionally, Josephson suffered a severed hyoid bone, as well as stab wounds to her face, neck, shoulder, torso, back, lung, leg, and feet. She bled profusely, ultimately dying within 10-20 minutes, according to the pathologist who conducted an autopsy on her body."

Similar story: I was living with my girlfriend and we were pretty much broken up, but we were being civil. She went across the way to a small pub to have a few drinks. She stayed in touch with me, telling me the bar was pretty empty except for a bartender and an off-duty cop. Having spent my whole life around Chicago, I was immediately alarmed, but I let it go, keeping an eye on the phone. Well, she starts texting me that she’s gotten fairly drunk and the off-duty cop is going to take her home. Next thing I know, she’s texting me that he’s going the wrong way, but she had no idea where she was. Since I had just helped her with her iPhone account, I knew her password. So I used the “Find iPhone” app to see almost exactly where she was. I promptly went out and collected her from in front of the asshole cop’s house (miles away), then I took off like a shot so that he wouldn’t recognize my car. Like all I needed was to be the center of some corrupt cop’s unimpeded scrutiny. Ladies, start paying attention. Please.

This reminded me of when I was about 17 waiting for a bus outside a train station. It was raining but that didn't bother me. A taxi driver pulled up asking where I was going and if I wanted a lift. I said just up the road and no thank you but he insisted and said it wouldn't cost anything. I didn't think much of it then and I am glad I kept saying no seeing as my bus was only few minutes away I did not care for a free lift... But to think whether it was a nice gesture or something more sinister creeps me out to this day. I was young and didn't think of anything bad ever happening to me because you think you're safe but apparently there are just selfish blinded people in this world.

Would anyone have taken him seriously? Would they have figured out she had been kidnapped? Could the cops have been contacted and found her before she was killed?
Edited to add: It’s so easy to second guess after the fact. But in that moment, it may have felt more plausible that she simply left her phone in the Uber and it went on a ride away from her or some other rational explanation. Our minds do like to protect us from traumatic things.

@@RJR338 she was partying with friends so obviously she was intoxicated in some way . I mean yeah when you walk up

So I’m not saying it’s not her fault but in situations like this mainly he’s more in the wrong for even going out his way to abduct someone and her bf is wrong for watching this ply out and not saying nothing until he noticed he wasn’t getting any reply still the next day. When I went to confirm my name, I was already getting into the car and was about to close the door when he told me he was picking up a different person and I was not his ride. Thankfully, he was extremely understanding of the situation and I got out of his car immediately. I was at fault in this situation because I wasn't paying attention to what car was picking me up.

    I had a similar experience.
I was stopped at a red light that happened to be in from of a bar.
Someone opened my back door, got and and immediately passed out.
I immediately pulled over and opened the doors and went into the bar to see if anyone was missing a friend.
I had to call the police to come get him and make sure he got home safe.
I’m glad he stumbled into my car instead of someone, because who knows what could’ve happened.

As an Uber driver I ALWAYS, ALWAYS have my phone present and say the name of the person I am picking up. I also look at my phone to see if this the the right person I picked up.
There are sometimes people hop in my car thinking I am their uber ride and I polity tell them " sorry wrong car, check your phone to be sure." That is why its imporant to be aware of your surroundings, cause the reality is, it can be your last day here on Earth, be safe out there.

It's not a bad idea to put a glass breaker on your key chain. If Samantha had had one she could have at least busted one of the rear windows...you smack a tempered window with a glass breaker and it instantly crumbles into a million pieces. A glass breaker is useful also if your car ends up in the water, and is sinking (although in that case you may be able to simply roll the window down).

As sad as it is to admit, I do the same. Women are also capable of committing heinous crimes, but the alarming rate of men committing crimes against women (especially in my state where kidnapping and sex-trafficing is a huge issue and happens a lot) has instilled the habit in me to ask for female staff when taking ubers, or going to things such as doctors appointments. Today I took a driving test, and I was disappointed to see that my instructor was a man(sadly I wasn't given the choice on who to choose for my test). He was very nice and a tried to relax around him, but I was wary because when I was in driver's training a year or so ago, the male instructor would make sexual inuendos towards us female students, and even got a charge against him after I left the course, so I can be stiff male strangers. I hate that I'm scared and wary around men, but I can't help the fact that society has brought that upon a lot of women nowadays. Not all men are bad, but cases like this show why we women usually have our guard up and/or ask for fellow female staff to drive us places, deal with our medical examinations, etc.

Watching this channel and others I've learned something which is controversial but true. If you want to minimize the chances of dying:
1- avoid going out by yourself after 10pm
2- avoid staying alone while going out
    3- don't get drunk
    4- don't do drugs
5- don't have one night stands
In other words, listen to your parents.

Hi Adrian, My brother was murdered by his girlfriend, and six years later, my 26yr old little sister and her boyfriend drown on Mothers Day. The media almost turned our despair, into our worst nightmare. My brother was a musician, my sister was a beauty queen, so It was on the local news every day, on every channel.
Even though none of it was hurtful in any way, or painted anyone in a negative light, it was still so disrespectful that they reported incorrect information, and even fabricated stupid little details, with random dramatic video clips in the background for dramatic effect and better ratings.
( Someone told my mom at the funerals "Well, at least your daughter's in a better place now" and "So, what happened....Did they catch that bitch that murdered your son!? " )
Adrian's input on this story really touched my heart because you can see that he really feels for what the families go thru after a murder or death.
    I love this channel.

Why didn't the bf call the police if he was watching the tracking app the entire time? Should've assumed something was extremely wrong the moment she was heading in the opposite direction, just hung up from a phone call and never responding again when she's obviously not wasted. No way would her phone just be left in the car when the car never went in the direction of her home in the first place. Get the police to check out the car or just be on the lookout, keep updating them her position on the app, easily could have singled out the car and might have saved her life.

@@kemeee5407 Yeah, guess it'll depend on how the situation is framed. From all the videos I've seen cops in the states do respond pretty quickly if they believe there is an emergency situation. Could've said it was not normal behaviour, she wouldn't go to that part of town etc. and truly believed she was in a distress so insist on a response. Better being a mistake than being sorry or sleeping on it.
