If America can be proud of anything it is the musical talent she has in abundance and of such variation and style. Bluegrass is one of the world's most beautiful yet underappreciated genres of music and should take centre stage internationally more often. Thank you USA
that is because it is a much older song, that eventually became an Appalachian folk song. It's been 'bluegrassified' here. I actually prefer the more traditional rendition of the song for that reason, there is a disconnect between the feel of the rhythm/embellishments, and the content of lyrics. This is pretty great though.
That's because it's a white man's Soul Music..my dad played bluegrass all his life..I grew up back stage at the old Grand Opray..Rahlp Stanley is my great uncle. My grandmas Brother..I had no choice but to love it.
This is the real music of America. Bluegrass elevates old time ballads that have existed for hundreds of years and added flesh and blood and bone to them. It gives me a natural high to listen to it every time.
patty loveless is AMAZING! and Ralph Stanleys reaction to her holding that note n then finishing it higher n harder you could see the love and admiration in BOTH of their faces to be a part of that performance..THANKYOU!!
Dr. Ralph Stanley is a priceless treasure to all of us fans of Bluegrass music! And his band is great, awesome fiddle work by James Price! Patty is just excellent in this performance; Bluegrass is her REAL forte! Love this great performance! :)
That note at 2:46 always gives me chills, and just look at the look Stanley gives her when she pins the tail on it at the end...I think it lasts for a full 4 measures before she lets it go...Awesome!
Patty is here, paying the utmost respect to a true legend. I wonder if she knows that she's a legend herself. Damn, when she held that note, I almost fell out of my chair, and the look on Mr. Stanley's face was priceless. This video, along with the Patty Loveless/Ricky Scaggs video of Daniel Prayed, are just two good reasons why Ms. Loveless is THE best country singer of her generation ... or any generation. This lady is truly something special.
@@77lissaable he said best country singer. They both are country, so not really apples to oranges. Saying someone is the best is all subjective. So if he, or anyone else, feels she's the best then she is to them. I won't deny she is a fantastic singer. :)
This song tells a story from the sixteenth century. These are real people ralph and patty are singing about and you can feel it in the way they performed it.
Love Patty Loveless and not a huge country fan…she is incredible singing Bluegrass. I don’t think she gets the recognition she definitely deserves. Have you seen her sing with Vince Gill Go Rest High on that Mountain (George Jones funeral)? Incredible and worth the watch.
@gregnormal5101 it’s hard to say…she is good with Vince gill as mentioned. I like the country songs ”you don’t even know me”, “you’ll never leave Harlan alive”, “how can I help you say goodbye “…also like bluegrass song Daniel prayed (with Ricky Skaggs) but there’s a number of songs and once you hear them you end up listening again.
My dad left us 4 years ago in cancer, we both loved Ralph Stanley, and when I played O death I could see that dad tuned in and relaxed because he could feel what's waited and he died at home with his family, great music and its ao uplifting
Sure wish these two would do an album together. I love Patty and the radio stations here in Toledo won't play her. No they want to pass off that half rock crap as country. Give me this PURE mountain music anytime. I have seen Ralph twice and he is just the most humble man, talk to all his fan and let you take pictures with him. Great guy!
Patty seems to be such a nice person... the way she was looking at him you knew she was going to give him a kiss on the cheek like a grand daughter would.
This is about as good as it gets.....thank you Jesus for pulling me out of the mire, that I now have a chance to listen to beautiful music and appreciate life.
all of the kids these days dont even know who ralph stanley and all them are they are missing out ! my dad raised me on this stuff!!! love the country!
I truly love Patty Loveless. Beautiful woman and beautiful voice. As for Ralph it's so good to see him reap the benefits of a lifetime of great music. A true legend.
The look that Ralph ( a total freaking legend) gives her during that held note tells you everything you need to know. Patty is a FORCE!! Maybe the purest voice in country/bluegrass ever! Such a treasure!
I cant believe how long Patty can hold that note! WOW!!! I just love the look on Ralph's face when she did that! Priceless! This is a really great song! I listen to it often. Enjoy James
This is different than the Pretty Polly that my Grandma used to sing. She sang, Pretty Polly pretty Polly over yonder she stands, with a golden ring on your lily white hands. Or maybe there are different verses, not included here. Brings back memories of my grandmother, who had a very hard life and lost the love of her life by a shooting within the family.
I' am glad that there bringin back the old timey bluegrass back . My wife and,I with our daughter Kailyn took my mom and dad to a bluegrass festival back in 2,007 in prescott Arizona. I learning the banjo my self . The banjo bluegrass sound.
Wow that brought tears to my eyes, absolutely brilliantly lovely an hairs standing up on the back of my neck . When music bore’s into your soul !! Greetings from Portsmouth England 🏴
To this day Patty Loveless has the most beautiful voice ever. So unique, none like it.

For some reason I can hear the music from north of "The Border" 😉🇺🇲🏴🇬🇧🇺🇲🏴🇬🇧

watching Ralph get a kiss from Patty was enough to make me envious, Ralphs a lucky man!
I am addicted to this video!

James Price's fiddle performance is EPIC. Hat on straight - all business.....KILLS IT. Sounds totally Mountain Music.
I love the look on Ralph's face when Patty holds that note.
😂 she is my all time favorite female singer. Underated singer

I agree with that

it's strange how bluegrass music can sound so uplifting, yet have the darkest lyrics you've ever heard.
that's because it is born from a people you can't break

So true! It’s nice there is better exposure for this Americana music, crafted in the fabric of America with amazing musicians
When I hear Patty sing I think she was put on this earth to sing Blue Grass music to us. She does it so GREAT ‼️‼️
Her and Ricky Skaggs Daniels prayer is amazing as well.
Patty kills It
@gregnormal9075 Good afternoon Greg, yes i am still a fan - always! and you have an amazing day as well!
@gregnormal9075 look for Daniels prayer - it is one of my favorites ( it's hard to find one i don't like) You be safe and God bless you

never a truer statement if bluegrass doesnt move you seek medical attention
You better believe it. I am right with you here.
+Linda Fields thank you linda fields
Oh Linda, you said it all, dear!! Bluegrass surely WILL be heard and sung in Heaven!!
Could not have said it better, and you absolutely right, this is our music!!!☯️

john allison Bluegrass
john allison or Traditional, maybe mountain music but not country
