Good question! Usually, we'll feel the belly expand on the inhale. We want a sense of pressure and strength in the abdomen, not tense, but energized. Even when you exhale, try to maintain good posture and core strength. The "gut self- healing" is a little different, in that you're applying pressure with the hands, rather than breathing in and out each time you move the belly.
