My Least Favorite Part of the Embalming Process

- The embalming process is one of the major pillars of funeralization in our American society. Embalming has several benefits for families seeking traditional funeral options and for society as w whole. In this video, I offer a brief overview of the embalming and discuss my least favorite part of this process.

She has such a beautiful way to tactfully describe what most consider to be an invasive process. You can tell that she loves her job and respects the deceased and the families she helps.

@@IamAries52 Thank you so much for watching
@@IamAries52 I'm a nurse too. I had to leave nursing due to my epilepsy, gastroperesis and heart issues. I miss it too. Anyhow my first body I was supposed to go shadow the others to learn. Well, they said Lesley go pull down the sheet. I didn't think anything of it, and went to pull the sheet down. Well when I pulled it down, it was one of my classmates who sat up, yelled, and grabbed me. I have never forgotten that, nor do I think it was funny at all. I felt it was disrespectful of those who have passed or will pass. And I never got over it anytime I got a body ready to go to morgue or with a funeral director directly. I felt it was a horrible thing to do? What are anyone else's thoughts??
I honor what you do not everyone can do that job, however it has to be done.
I found my girlfriend's body approximately seventeen and half hours after her unfortunate death, when her body was rolled over I saw something that wouldn't want to see up close and that is her eyes were wide open, which really bothered me.
I don't know if when she died if her eyes were closed or not?
How and are the eyes closed?
That's another thing that I would have a problem doing is if someone's eyes are open if had to close the eyes. Especially if it was a Loved one.
I hope that no one that I know comes across this comment and says something to someone else I would know, I am not writing this to upset anyone I am just asking a question. Okay?
I just recently lost my brother on August 22,2019 an I'm still suffering from depression. But I just wanted to know what happened to my brother in the funeral home an you literally just informed me. They did a nice job shaving him he looked like he was just taking a nap an not actually gone.
KiKi I am SOOOOOO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS! I wish I had words to make you feel better but I don't. I do know that whomever cared for your brother did so in a way that would make you happy. JustKiKi87 hi Kiki. I look forward to hearing from you 💓💓💓
Justkiki87 I just want to firstly say i know i dont know you but I'm so sorry for the lost of your brother. But I like you felt the same when I lost my mother and had all sort of questions going around in my mind. Wondering if they treated my mother kindly, gently and with respect this went on in my mind for months..and I watched so many of these sort of videos trying to I guess bring comfort to myself because i was so so depressed and just couldn't come to terms with the passing of my mother until it made me so ill and I really never thought that i would get through it ... Until one day i just took my mother photo sat down and talk to her photo and really had a good cry and let it all out then I felt this warmth of great feeling of her around me and day by day I got through it ... you know it may seems right now like you just can't cope but just take it slowly and in your own time you will get through it. Most high bless you always x
@justKiKi87
I’m so sorry for you’re loss , believe me I feel your pain. I also lost a brother last year on April 29,2018 . I’m still grieving, it feels like an never ending pain .
A. Body is really a empty shell like locusts shells we saw on trees as kids. The spirit of life goes back to the creator.
Thanks for your insight Dennis.
That's what the holy spirit taught me
My grandson has lost his great grandmother and also a close family friend. He was full of questions. I explained it the simplest way I could. I said our body is like a potato chip bag. The inside is the good part...the best part for us to enjoy...(our soul). The outside being the bag becomes not needed once the chips are gone and we don't forget how good the chips were..but they are gone. It seemed to help him understand the deaths.
Beautifully said
Dennis Morris great analogy 👍🏼
You are a blessing to any family that receives your services. So respectful and that is important to families trying to protect their loved one’s dignity. Bless you sweetie.

You are such a compassionate, caring and humane person and may I also add very beautiful. God Bless you always. I'm 73yrs.old and have chosen creamation over embalming due to that trokar mess lol. Thank you so much for watching and for your beautiful words. They mean a lot to me. It makes me so happy to know that you have chosen your method of disposition and are putting thought into your final wishes.
I would rather be cremated myself immediately after I die. I don't want visitation and I do not want funeral services, I want my disposal very simple.

I knew it would be the trocar before your presentation started. I’ve been in death care for 30 years and saw my first embalming about 10 years ago. I was fine till the embalmer got to the trocar and aspiration. I was moved by your caring spirit and empathy that you show to your craft. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for watching and for responding. The trocar is the worst part for sure. I am glad to know that I am not the only bothered by it. It was really vulnerable to share this for me because I was afraid that it would come off as weak. I am so happy that you can see and feel my empathy.
@@TheGraveWoman I have tremendous respect for embalmers. I can't imagine a world without them. Kudos to you!

I think so too. Thanks for watching
You are such a beautiful lady inside and out. I hope someone like you cares for my loved ones when they pass.
Thank you so much
I appreciate so much that you talked about not doing something to alter the deceased appearance without first talking to the family. My daddy passed away when I was 12, he was missing most of his back teeth so his cheeks sunk in, he also had a very ruddy complexion. They packed his cheeks so they didn't sink in, and he was so pale. He didn't look like my daddy. It was all I needed at 12 to convince myself that it wasn't really him, that he would come back. It took years of therapy, and getting married (because I knew he would have been there) for me to finally accept that he was really dead, and not coming back.
Sorry for your loss 🌈

Yes I agree. When I worked at a funeral home we NEVER refer to the remains at "The Body". We always referred to them by their name.
@@TheGraveWoman thanx
You're 100 percent correct when it comes to those personal features that the family is use to. When my grandma passed in 2018 and she was smiling in her casket, it threw me off a little because my grandmother wasn't someone who smiled in pictures and when I see a deceased in a casket I always think of them sleeping and posing for their last picture.

You did a great job. I've been in the business for about 20 years and always have people asking me questions when they find out what I do. You handled it tactfully and with style. Also, as a state embalming practical examiner it did my heart good to hear you treat every case individually. @ The Grave Woman you’re very welcome!! You're the most beautiful, compassionate funeral director I've ever met. For myself, I don't want anything but to be cremated and no viewing or funeral. My most painful experiences has been the viewing, funerals of my dear loved ones whether family or friends. I want to be remembered for how I was in life...not how I looked after. It's so hard on family and friends going through that. The cost is insane too and I understand with all that's done it's justified but I don't want to burden my family. If I had to do the whole shebang it would be my sincerest wish to have you do it.

@@TheGraveWoman Hello!! How awesome that you replied. That doesn't happen very often but to answer your question...I verbally told my husband and daughter. Thank You For This Video. If you don't have a Flower Shop, it would be Good to have One. My Cousin Had 4 Funeral Homes. Many Did Clinical Under Him. The One Thing He Did Not Teach Them Was TO KEEP THE BODY VERY COLD OR FROZEN. Seen Many People Whose Features had Changed or Have Odor. I know What and Why, But I Don't Understand Why Schools Don't Teach This. When Someone In My Family Passes, I immediately Tell The Director That I Don't want My Love One Turning Dark Or Have An Odor. I also Tell Them What To Do In Case They Never Heard. Some Funeral Homes are Lazy and don't Want to Take The Body out of the casket after the Family Approves, and after the Viewing Ect. Not in the business, but around It A Lot. SOOO PROUD OF YOU. YOU EXPLAINED VERY THE PROCESS BEAUTIFULLY AND YOU DID WITH SUCH GRACE.
Thanks so much fro watching and for your kind words
I could totally listen to funeral directors talk all day about the embalming process. ..
Lisa Comp Manley thank you so much for watching😘
I actually very much wanted the sweatshirt my dad passed in. He passed with such a short notice to his illness. It’s been almost 3 years and I still can’t deal with it. Not enough time to say goodbye. He was so sick. Anyway, I asked the funeral director for his sweatshirt. He told me I wouldn’t have wanted it and he disposed of it. However, I was with my dad when he passed and stayed with him almost 2 hours and the sweatshirt was completely fine. So, maybe the funeral director/embalmer should ask first regardless of what they think should happen. I know you all do what you think is best for sure, no judgement here. It’s just a thought from the family side. Very informative video. Thank you.
Firstly, I would like to say that I am so sorry for your loss. I can not image what you went through and what you still must be experiencing. I agree with you 100% that in your particular situation it would have been most appropriate to return the sweatshirt. In most cases if the personal belongings do not pose a bio hazard threat to the family or public funeral directors will return them no questions asked. I am not sure why this particular funeral director did not do so but I am so sorry that you were not able to keep that part of your father. I hope that memories and love that you all shared together will bring you comfort.
Thank you so much for watching and for being vulnerable enough to relive and share such a personal and painful experience.

synergy builders this is such a touching compliment!! Thank you so much! 💓💓💓
I don't know if I can say this here but you sound so calm and you look very beautiful. Your words and the way you talk shows how beautiful you are from inside too. ❤️ Your profession has turned you into a strong women as well. Lots of love to you and your family ♥️ - From India.
Thanks for watching and for your kind words Sany
I got a flash of your description. My
Father worked for a funeral home and I use to ride with him to pick up
Bodies as a child and I would see
Every thing as a child. My father
Didn't have a license to do it but he
Knew how. He mainly dressed them
And my mom did their hair.

I am an aspiring mortician and I just wanted to say i appreciate your video! Thanx for sharing your experiences
Thanks so much for watching Aspasia
Does this job make you think of your own mortality and what comes after?
Hi Nicole. What a very interesting and powerful question. YES! This job makes me think about it all the time. I will be doing a few videos about my spiritual evolution through this journey and hope that you will check them out once I share them. They are set for next month.
Thank you for being so caring.
Thank you for watching Amy
@@TheGraveWoman it's covid madness out there. It's after 1am here in Europe. No idea how or why your video pooped up🤷♀️anyway I'm glad it did.
You are clearly a caring, warm, humble, conscientious and compassionate sister.
I realised that after you spoke about the discomfort you always feel when using that long instrument on the deceased. Bless you for caring so deeply. I'm a spiritual person like yourself and believe that when we leave here we go to another place. Call it heaven, paradise...we move on. My stepdad dreamt his late mum was on a hill waving 4 him to come to her. He told my mom this. He had the dream 3x. 4 weeks later he had a heart attack n died.
I like to think his mum came to accompany him across the hill to eternity 😌. Someone always or usually comes to help us cross over so I've heard. Anyway we'll never know until it's our turn to fly away. I must go now I have work tomorrow despite the covid situation 🙄🤷♀️. 5 hours sleep will have to do. Stay well n stay safe and thanks 4 sharing your warmth and wisdom on a very natural part of life.
👋👋😊
@@TheGraveWoman sorry I meant popped up not pooped up🙈🙈😬it's late my eyes are tired n wobbly lol 😁 adios senorita 👋👋
Thank you for being so caring ❤ I feel you on the aspiration part.. I'd honestly feel the same way.
Hi Courtney. It is something I will NEVER get used to
I would like more information like this. Thanks so much for the video. And I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year.
Thank you. Happy New Year to you as well. I pray you had a great holiday season.
@@TheGraveWoman well I made it a day after Christmas and a friend of mine passed away unexpectedly and then a few days after that another friend I knew passed away so it's been a rocky time and start to the new year.
David McKinney I’m so sorry for your losses David. Peace and blessings to you and the families of your dear friends.
@@TheGraveWoman you are awesome and I look forward to watching your videos..
.I aspire to be a licensed Funeral Director and Mortician one day. I’m one of the lucky ones, I’ve gotten too witness my share of decedents being embalmed from beginning until the end. Those chemicals can and will burn your eyes and nostrils but you get use too it after a while. No I’ve never embalmed but I had the pleasure of aspirating the abdominal cavity. I’ve also dressed and casketed human remains
Best of luck to you in your career Jazz. Thanks so much for watching
I seriously admire you!
That is so sweet! Thank you
You are so beautiful and respectful. The people that took care of my 40yr old husband was great too. I was stressed at first when seeing him. His lips were too pale and "weird", but they handled it quickly. It means a lot to see your loved one as close as you Remember them..especially for our sons (about 5 and 10 at the time). Unfortunately, I was forced to chose cremation. It was the only way I could be intered with my husband. Thank you for sharing.

YOU , MY LADY , ARE A BEAUTIFUL CARING AND COMPASSIONATE HUMAN BEING!! I ADMIT THAT I DO FEAR DEATH...IT COMES TO US ALL... BUT , IT'S THE NOT KNOWING OF WHAT COMES AFTER I FEAR... JUST THE "NOT BEING" . HAVE YOU SEEN THE SITE CALLED "ASK A MORTICIAN" ?? AGAIN , THANK YOU FOR THE WORK YOU DO
AND SUPPORT YOU PROVIDE.
Thank you so much for watching and for your wonderful comment Megan! I have heard of Caitlin and her channel. I LOVE IT! I have looked up to her for many years. I hope to one day collaborate with her. I think we all have reservations and fears about the unknown. I think its natural and necessary. If we knew all the answers, this whole journey would be pretty boring.
Very informative and very knowledgeable. I was impressed with your sensitivity to carrying out that trocar procedure. Very caring. Best wishes.
Thank you so much Steve. I appreciate your watching and hope to see your comments on more videos.

I recently lost my grandmother and listening to how you care for the deceased and used the word “Essence” brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for caring for the deceased with such dignity and respect.
Darnita! Thank you so much for sharing. God bless your sweet Grandmothers soul. How are you?
I lost my brother june 16, 2019. He was killed. He was my little brother and it kills me knowing that I couldn't be there to save him. I think about him every day. My life has changed in ways I wish it hadn't. I wish he was still here. Thanks for the video. I always wonder what the process was like.
