I hope you guys enjoyed my story! I made this video to be shown at a benefit my grandparents held in August, and it made an impact I never expected. My goal is to continue educating the world on burn survivors & inspire those who have been through the same experiences. Follow me along my journey and you'll see how different life is, but also how it never changed!

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and listen to my story. It truly is so amazing the amount or love & support yall have 💛 james is doing really good! He was unfortunately burned worse mainly because he was holding the container and closer to the barrel. his healing process is going amazing, & he continues to grow and heal every day. I try not to give out too much information because i want to respect him and his family's privacy. everything i say about him is with his permission! again, thank you all so much💕

I too was in the Vanderbilt Burn ward Dec12,2019. You were down the hall from me. The nurses told me about you and James....and I prayed so many times for you both. Those nurses .... I want you to know how much they cared about you. I would ask them how you were doing and I could see it in their eyes how special you are. You inspired me to get up and go on with life and accept my scars, my new normal. God has blessed us so much. I am so happy to finally see "the girl down the hall" and know you are just as beautiful as I imagined you to be. ❤️

I'm a burn survivor aswell. I was burned october 13 2019, my burn story is very similar to your but not as severe. Me and my dad were having a bon fire in the back yard and he put some gasoline on it and as I was walking back it exploded causing my pants and jacket to catch on fire. I threw off my jacket and ran inside the house my mom pushed me back outside and my dad tackled me and pulled off my clothes, while in the process he burned his arm. My left leg ankle to thigh, my right knee was burned and my left arm, and my hair was burned off. I was in the hospital for 62 days and my dad 7. My school family and community were so supportive and helped us so much. I had 3 surgeries and am having a lazer surgery soon. I am fully healed and just got the all clear. Thank you so much for sharing your story❤️ #BurnBuddies

Thank you for this video. I was burned on roughly 20% of my body.
It was Christmas Eve. , I was already going through a lot because my Dad, my everything had passed away in March 2020, and the holiday was already stressful and upsetting with him not being there.
That morning I was going to push through and stay strong for my family. So I took a shower, brought out the gifts, wrapping paper and was going to wrap after I made breakfast.
I normally not cook or make breakfast. I was going to fry hash browns and make eggs. I turned the burner up high and added vegetable oil, I turned around and noticed that something underneath the burner had caught fire. I quickly turned off the burner, lifted the pan and poured SALT (DO NOT EVER PUT WATER ON A GREASE FIRE ANYONE) the fire quickly went out. I set the pan on the sink and put a lid that I grabbed, it was not the lid to the pan I was using. I then noticed fire was licking up the sides of the pan. In a panic I picked the pot in my head, totally freaking out, I thought take the wrong lid off and behind me near the stove was the lid for the pan that was on fire.
Again I’m panicking, this has never happened (thankfully) to me before. Well I took the lid off, and WOOSH, four foot flames. My left hand caught on fire as the flames were getting bigger and I had to make a split second decision because things around my sink were catching on fire. It was to throw the pan in the sink, get out of the house, knowing my animals would perish and the house would be destroyed or drop the pan knowing I was going to get badly injured. My hand still on fire dropped the pan.
Called 911 and she thought I was fully engulfed so the police arrived within minutes , paramedics and Fire Department were there within minutes. I was in terrible pain, but in shock. I remember waiting outside, the policeman kept me calm. He wanted to gently wipe or get the grease off, but I did not want him touching it.
I being the animal lover I am and in total shock was more concerned about my two ferrets getting outside because the fire department left the door open and put a huge fan in the doorway to let the smoke out. My brother n law is actually a fire Marshall in my county and he worked my call. He made sure that the ferrets were put up in their mansion.
So in shock and pain they put me on the gurney and told me “do not look down at my leg”.They were going to medflight me out but it ended up being faster for them to drive me lights and sirens to Tampa General burn unit.
I don’t remember too much, they had given me fentanyl twice in the ambulance and the EMT was telling me his experience when he got burned and how great they are at tgh. He kept me somewhat calm. I just so happened to look at my calf and saw the skin melting off. He quickly threw a special blanket to go over me but not tough my skin, I was so freaked out, it’s Christmas Eve, in the middle of a pandemic, missing my dad who would’ve been there for me (he was with me through 40 major surgeries, septic infection, broken hardware in my spine, neck fusions etc... He was my rock.
I don’t remember telling my husband to come down later after I was out of the ER and moved up to the burn unit. I remember feeling what I can only describe as if my toes were frostbit and when warmed up that type of pain, a sharp stabbing pain.
They told me with a grease fire that they wouldn’t know for a few days how deep the grease was going to go down into my tissues, I had second and third degree burns and by Sunday they let me shower and the burns were cherry red. They knew then I needed surgery. On Monday, all alone, they did surgery. I had grafts on my left foot, ankle up to mid thigh, grafts on my Big ,second and fourth toes . On my Left hand a graft on my left index finger . My donor site is wrapped around my upper left thigh and that was the MOST pain I have ever went through after the skin grafting surgery . I cried during every bandage change, I dreaded them. Both in the hospital while they were “wiping “ the burned areas, then again at home. I can take a lot of pain but never like this.
My donor site did not heal for weeks, I remember gauze getting stuck in the donor site, I’m screaming as we are trying to pull each piece out of that skin, I was screaming and crying as I pulled off each one, while in the shower thinking water would help them release from my open donor site, It was bleeding so bad after each one was pulled off, I felt like I was going to pass out.
The house was exactly as I left it when I was released from the hospital on January 3rd 2021.Wrapping paper out, tree up, gifts on my bed that never got wrapped.
I am like my Dad was, very stubborn and do it myself type of person and after major back, neck, knee surgeries I would push myself to do things. Surprising Dr.’s how quickly I bounced back.
Not this time. I needed my husband to help with EVERYTHING. My donor site finally “Dried Out” and started to heal and I’m now dealing with the aftermath.
I’m in florida and we go to the beach a lot. I know people are going to stare, it’s huge reddish, purple scars and my donor site looks like a Tetris piece. It’ll be the first time I will be out in public with my scars showing a week from today. I pray that I am strong enough to handle it. Don’t get me wrong I know it could’ve been WAY worse, but this just happened not that long ago and I miss that I can’t go to the beach or anywhere and not just be some person, not noticed, just collecting shells.
I also am suffering with PTSD, anxiety and depression. My pain management Doctor has me on a medication that helps with it. Some days are easier than others.
I just got my compression garments a couple weeks ago. They really are helping the hypertrophic scarring and the coloring to get paler, the scars are softening up.
My left index finger that had the sheet graft, the skin is so soft, I joke and tell people to touch it, then telling them you were just touching my inner thigh lol.
When were you cleared for your first revision surgeries? They told me about the laser surgery and that it’s done under anesthesia, also about cutting the scars out leaving one long scar where they sew the healthy skin back together, sorry I don’t know the name of the surgery.
How long was it after your initial surgery that you had your first “revision” or laser surgery?
I just wanted to share my story, your advise is helpful for someone who is going through this or went through this. So thank you again!
I know yourself and others have dealt with a tougher battle than I have and I commend your strength.

Yep, especially with fire and flammable liquids. So many people don't really understand petrol and other fuels - it's not the liquid itself that's burning, it's the vapour. Horrifically dangerous to pour fuel onto any naked flame, as these poor kids found out. Much better education is needed on fire safety and the dangers of handling fuels/flammable liquids so that awful accidents like this don't happen.

Natalie, thank you for sharing this part of your life with us. I don't even have the right words to say how unbelievably awesome I think you are; "strong" doesn't even come close, but that's all I can come up with right now.
When I was in nursing school we weren't allowed to work with burn patients, but we did get to observe a shift on the burn unit at UNC Hospital. I wasn't expecting to gain many skills, seeing as I wouldn't be touching or doing anything, but it turns out I learned more that day than any other day in my clinical rotations. To those interested in speaking to me, I sat and listened to every word they said. Some told me about how they got burned, one told me what it was like living in the burn unit and about all of his treatments, and another opened up to me about how she thought her life would be in the future, once she was finally discharged from the hospital. It was a sad and painful day, but one I'll never forget. It was 20 years ago but I remember it like it was yesterday.
Y'all are some of the most amazing Individuals I've had the honor to meet, and I appreciate you telling your story.
I'm still working as a nurse (on a covid unit right now) but I also teach nursing in the evenings. If there's anything you'd like for me to teach my students, please let me know! I'm always looking for ways to make them better nurses, and mostly the lessons I teach them come from real patients. Reading books for knowledge can only take you so far... We need patient's voices to become better nurses.
Thanks again, Natalie! Take care, sweet girl!✌️💜

If you have a gas fire it's likely going to be a large fire since gas is very flammable and explosive plus I doubt you'd have THAT much salt just laying around.
