  • The Sigma 18-35 f1.8 has been a go to lens for videographers shooting aps-c & super 35 cameras.
    With no mirrorless version of this lens on the horizon your best option is to adapt it to your newer camera. In this video we test the autofocus performance of the Sigma 18-35 adapted to the Sony FX30 by using the Sigma MC-11 adapter. People using the new Sony A6700 can expect similar if not slightly better AF performance with this combo.
    We look at continuous focus using face and eye detection in a number of different environments and scenarios. We also test if the minimum focusing distance of the lens when adapted to see if you can expect the same performance here.

    Dude! Subscribing simply off the fact that this is the first video that I found that confirmed that this lens and adapter combination allows you to maintain autofocus (I've been on the fence about the 18-35 and now I'm convinced that I'm purchasing it). Also, the video is extremely well done!

    Why don't you think they'll make a modern update of this lens for mirrorless with a quiet motor? I don't understand why no one has made the attempt actually, especially with so many creator-centric bodies released since it first came out. I'm really hoping that if not Sigma, someone like Viltrox would.

    • @ThomasFransson
      @ThomasFransson  11 месяцев назад +1

      I can only speculate, but there's a couple of reasons as I see it.
      With mirrorless cameras being a thing for quite some time now, with both Sony and Panasonic being quite early.
      If Sigma could there probably would have been a mirrorless version on the market already.
      But perhaps it's not technically possible to cramp down the elements and flange distance to work with a mirrorless camera.
      With Canon stopping all third-party RF lenses with AF. The apsc market shrunk to Sony and maybe to some degree Fujifilm. Fujifilm people however typically sticks with fujinon glass. And prefer smaller lenses for the most part.
      Nikon, well...
      And with new smaller lenses for mirrorless aps-c cameras being the norm, while the 18-35 being somewhat of a beast in comparison. I doubt there would be a big market other than among a minority of the market with simi/professionals shooting s35/aps-c today.
      I hope I'm wrong, but things don't look too good.

      @@ThomasFransson Sigma is already working on a mirrorless DC DN version of the 18-35mm, as the CEO stated in an interview at the start of the year. We'll most likely see it in 2024.

      They just have not had time and resources to do it, the 18-35mm is also not that great of a seller like most people think, its expensive and while popular with RUclipsrs, does not mean its popular with everyone.

    From what I've learned, MC-11 doesn't support PDAF. It's still fast, but not reliably fast. Whereas other 3rd party adapter like Viltrox have one that support PDAF.

    • @ThomasFransson
      @ThomasFransson  Месяц назад

      Not sure what pdaf is, but the mc-11 adapter is flawless. The downside is that it’s for Sigma lenses or rather it performs flawless with the supported Sigma lenses while other EF lenses can be hit or miss. Other adapters is more of a gamble without any clear directives on what lenses will work or at what level. In my case and in this specific case when it's about adapting the Sigma18-35. The mc-11 is probably the best adapter.
      If you're planning on adapting other brands it's always going to be a gamble/ trial and error to find the best adapter for that lens. While some adapters have better reputations than others, it's still hard to give any guarantees. At least from my experience, I've used a lot of them.

    Can you tell if theres any functionality that we loses using a 18-35 vs a native sony lens? AF modes, video funcionalities or anythings else?

    • @ThomasFransson
      @ThomasFransson  8 месяцев назад +1

      In terms of AF it performs like a native lens pretty much. The only thing I can think of and this is not just the 18-35 but all third-party lenses, they're not supported with the focus breathing compensation. That feature is only works with some Sony lenses.
      Then again not all third-party lenses suffer from heavy focus breathing.

      From my understanding, it's mainly Sigma lenses that's supported. There's is a list of officially supported lenses. I believe I left a link to it in the description.
      On other lenses it's more of a gamble.
      If wish I had that lens so I could test it for you.

      Great combo!
      I used Sony's transformation LUTs for the FX6 I believe (I shot in S-Log3 cine )
      There's some luts on the "pro section" on Sonys website that has transformation luts compensating for +1 and +2 stops overexposure.
      Then I did some basic color corrections for all the green color cast and temperature. On some shots I did some curves adjustments and color wheel adjustments.
      Hope this helps

      Sure thing!

      Transition Speed: 4
      Subject Shift Sensitivity: 5
      That's what I've been using ever since. Can probably be improved on, but have been pleased with the results for the types of things I normally shoot.

      Hi, yes it's the Canon ef version. I don't think there's a great adapter for the Nikon mount sadly. But lots and lots of options for adapting EF glass to E mount. So if you’re thinking about adapting lenses, I would recommend going with EF mount.

      The lens was released in 2013, if there would be a mirrorless version of it it would have been available by now. Sigma released the much smaller 18-50 f2.8 and the f1.4 primes.

    Hey I compared the wideness of my 18-35 (with mc-11) with my basic 18-135 mm and it has a crop both on my fx30 and my a6400
    Is that a hardware thing, nobody noticed or do i have a software problem? Updating the firmware on mc-11 for example?

    • @ThomasFransson
      @ThomasFransson  8 месяцев назад +1

      The 18-135 might have a slightly wider angle of view. It can vary between lens models.
      If you would compare two 24-70mm lenses from different manufacturers they would also most likely be slightly different on the wide and tight end due to varying angle of view.
      In the case of the Sigma 18-35 it might be a trade off in order to keep the light gathered properties constant throughout the entire zoom range.

    • @ThomasFransson
      @ThomasFransson  5 месяцев назад

      No, its still an 18-35mm lens.
      The image circle is just smaller as it's an aps-c lens so you'll have vignetting from 18mm up to about 22-24mm on a full frame sensor.

      I tried both but didn't notice any difference on this wide angle zoom. There's lens data transmission over the adapter, so I'd say that you don't have to.
