      That’s exactly what I’m thinking too... although, those are full frame lenses so there is some room there since full framers probably won’t pick this up.

    • @goxukraine
      @goxukraine 5 лет назад +1

      Even if they will release it, they are just going to permanently attach mc-11 adapter to lens and call it a day. Like they did with whole lineup of art e-mount lenses. They will have to design a completely different lens to make it truly native.

      @@jacklawson2597 I mean, yes, for handheld video even at super wide FoV its shaky and I wouldn't use it ever. 6400 requires gimbal/fluid head for use without any stabilization. That said, with a decent OSS lens its manageable. But none of my sigmas do that sort of fancy stuff.

    I proudly own the Nikon version. This lens is the only reason that keeps me from switching to mirrorless.
    Build quality, sharpness, constant f1.8 aperture, 24-70 (ish) f2.8 fullframe equivalent: the best lens for the APS-C system so far. Please Sigma release a native E-mount version.

    • @dunnadidit

      I totally hear you! We need an e mount version!!

    • @chrisjames7489
      @chrisjames7489 5 лет назад +1

      It's not anywhere near 24-70ish. It's 28-53mm... 24 is significantly wider and 70 decently more telephoto

    • @emilianocalvi1118
      @emilianocalvi1118 5 лет назад +1

      Sigma clearly had the 24-70 2.8 in mind when designing this lens. There is no other lens in the APS-C system that can compete with a 24-70 2.8 on fullframe. Something like a 16-45 1.8 would have been much closer yet significatively heavier (just like a 24-70 2.8 if not even more).

    • @chrisjames7489
      @chrisjames7489 5 лет назад +1

      @@emilianocalvi1118 I would disagree, Sigma set out to create a 3prime zoom. 28,34,50. All normal to normal wide focal lengths. They made this compromise to get 2.8 equiv dof FF; but this lens has no where near the versatility of a 24-70.
      Looks at tamrons 28-75 2.8 for Sony FE mount and see a similar lens at a similar price, except it gets the full tele end. 24mm is a big deal to give up

    • @emilianocalvi1118
      @emilianocalvi1118 5 лет назад +1

      @Chris I’m not saying this lens is perfect (no stabilization, no weather sealing, and yes limited focal range), but I think it’s the best compromise for APS-C. Of course the 24-70 on FF has many advantages, but the FF setup is really expensive.
      Sigma is trying to revitalize the APS-C with the 18-35, 50-100 and E-mount primes (16/30/56), something you will never see from Canon/Nikon/Sony because they sell their FF lenses hoping you will switch to an expensive FF camera in the future.

      Honestly, at this point, I think I would suggest the 18-105 first until sigma makes a native e-mount version of the 18-35. The sigma is a beautiful lens but I wouldn't want it to be my only or my main lens. I would buy it as a specialty lens for specific situations where I could take my time with focus.

    I had it before, excellent optics even at 1.8 but this sony combo is heavy. It is front heavy making it unbalanced for zhiyun crane (version 1) , tho havent tested with crane 2 since i sold this lens already. The af motor is loud, every ticking noise is caught by on-board mic. Sigma 16 or 30 is the more fit lens for a6000/6300/6500, make it daily casual use or gimbal work. This 18-35 is best for tripod

    So the sigma 18 35 f 1.8 or the Sony 18 105 f 4
    Do a comparison 💯
    The videos we shoot highly rely on auto focus so the only lenses I have are Sony with my a6500..
    Good things about the 18 to 105
    Makes no auto focus noise
    Therefore you can use a rode mic for example
    18 to 105 is quite a large zoom range
    Light weight
    Not expensive by any means (camera gear in general is expensive)
    Has 2 zoom options, the ring and the automatic gradual switch (I don't know the name for that)
    Fits in most pockets
    Rugged design, can handle basic mistakes
    Constant f4 aperture (can be at f4 at any. M even 105mm
    The zoom happens in camera, so it can be used on steady cams etc
    The bad of this lense
    F4 aperture isn't amazing in low light
    Bokeh is not better than the Sony 35mm but it's not too far off, the problem is how far you have to be from the subject
    Can't properly use the flash on the camera, because it casts a shadow on the lense (large lense, akward flash combo) you should buy a good flash anyway
    Refocusing after fast manual zoom, quite a lot of hunting for focus
    No grip on the rings
    Manual focus seems annoying because of the smoothness of the ring
    Verdict, amazing lense, however it isn't the sharpest or a Bokeh king and you'll probably need another f1. 8 or lower lense
    If you plan on using this for photography, I'm sure you can find something sharper or with a silkier Bokeh, but probably not at the same price. This thing is a video beast.

    YOU LOATH MANUAL FOCUSING!?!?!?!?!? I'M SHOCKED. Sorry for the all caps, but I'M SHOCKED! I have no idea what it is I like about it. Probably video background, never ever ever ever liked manual focusing for moving pictures, ever. Having shot so much stuff over my days I suspect that's it. I'll admit that my patience for manual focusing isn't nearly as strong when shooting stills, especially with people involved (keeping them waiting longer than they need to when shooting wide open I just don't like doing). Probably why i don't love shooting portrait photography as much eheh.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад +2

      Hahahaha! I knew you could comment on that!
      I think it has to do with the fact that I got into this stuff at a time when autofocus was actually really good, and the feel of manual focus on newer lenses sucks. And because I almost exclusively film myself haha.
      But then this experience was great so maybe it’s just the lenses I’ve been using.
      Thanks brother!

      Ya the manual focus on some lenses is awful I can fully agree there. Also shooting self, manual REQUIRED GO! Although I'm going to try shooting myself on a vintage manual and see how that goes. Autofocus' noise can be reduced or muted if you enter in manu and decrease the "Audio Rec Level". You can't hear the noise in vol: 16

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  4 года назад +1

      Even if that did work, that just turns down the microphone level... what if you need it to be louder for the other audio sources you're trying to record, then you'll turn it back up in post and you'll be able to hear it again. All that said, I had issues with or without an external microphone and with the level turned down anyway. Most lenses, the noise is barely audible unless you put your ear right next to the lens, this one I could hear several feet away.

      You're right. The noise is an annoying problem, and if you turn up the volume you can hear it again. But generally the audio that is being recorded is greater than the noise, even with vol: 16 (for me it's a good volume to record the scenes).
      That was the only way I found to solve this problem, but it's still annoying. And yes, with sigma lenses for Sony, the noise is much lower, and you can only hear when the auto-focus is adjusting, and not at all time like this lens. If you find a solution, please let me know!!

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад +3

      I found this lens not bad for video.. the two things are that autofocus is a bunch slower than the 18-105 and it’s a lot louder. So if you use an on camera shotgun microphone and autofocus, I don’t suggest it. That being said, it does help in low light and the image quality is fantastic.

    After you attached the Sigma lens onto the adapter, that solid green light on the adapter would stay on forever or it goes off right away??

      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад +2

      I did that a bit in the video, generally though the 18-35 is much sharper, but with the adapter, the autofocus isn’t as good. Also the 18-35 weighs WAYYYY more and is much larger.

    Hey, as always great video, would you recommend the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art e-mount for my A6300 for portraits, do you think it will be a good investment or should I go for the 18-35 1.8 ART???yhanks

    • @dunnadidit

      For portraits, I would suggest the 56mm dc dn for apsc. Or the 18-35 if you’re ok with adapted lenses.

    Really good video. I picked up my sigma 18-35mm with the MC-11 adapter for about ~ $700 on craigslist. Does anyone know if the Sigma 50-100mm is as sharp as the 18-35mm?

    • @joseallende8046
      @joseallende8046 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the 50-100 is just as sharp! The 18-35 and 50-100 are an OUTSTANDING combo for APC-S. I would argue that I notice the sharpness more on the 50-100 since it's a portrait length lens so most of the images I've taken with it have been close up shots. While pixel peeping you can count the hairs on your subjects face. I was originally using them with my Canon 80D. On the canon body I had to spend some time micro adjusting the focus using the USB dock. Sharp! However later I upgraded to an A7RIII and sold my Canon to help pay for it. However, I kept my Sigma APC-S lenses as I built up my FF primes collection. I found that the Sigma EF mount lenses actually focused much better on the Sony body using the MC-11 than it did on the Canon. The A7RIII autofocus is kick ass. So now that I built up my FF lens collection (mostly Sigma Art primes) I was planning to sell off my 18-35 and 50-100. However, I haven't done it yet. Using a zoom is just soooo convenient and I'm finding that the A7RIII in crop mode with these lenses produce some beautiful images. In all honesty I could have saved a ton of money and just got an a6500 with the 18-35 and 50-100 and been happy. But I splurged and got the A7RIII - because why not. :-) I love the Sigma Arts. Some amazing image quality. I use FF primes when I want the absolute best quality images or when I feel like being a student of photography. Then us my zooms for casual shots or when I'm lazy and don't mind 18MP images.

    About a year ago I sold this lens because of the noise and weight and did the sigma trio thing. I shoot music videos and use a gimbal it’s a hassle switching lens and rebalancing all the time doing that kills the vibe of a shoot. So I recently bought it again and using it with the improved auto focus of the a6600 auto focus is great. I used it with the a63 and 6500 before. Plus the extra weight is a bonus when filming hand held and not switching lens helps with no getting sensor dust.

      I have the FX30 which should have even better autofocus than the A6600...so for you the MC-11 and the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 work perfectly? no focus hunting? f1.8 is amazing for APSC...I don't want to buy the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 to replace my Sony 18-105mm f4 even if I gain a bit more in low light...any samples I can see of your videos? thanks- I'm 2 years late I know!

    I have a love hate relationship with this lens. I love the sharpness, omg there is something about the colour mmmmm but but but the auto focus with the 80D is so unrealisable. It’s my landscape lens. One thing that wasn’t mentioned. The lens is pretty much useless for focus stacking an image due to focus breathing.
    The recent software update to the lens didn’t improve the focusing issues BUT I still love this lens. It’s one of those so good/ bad relationships

    Great lens, I am using this with my Nikon D7200 and it definitely is heavier than using a prime, however, great image quality. In terms of image stabilisation, from a photography point of view just use higher shutter and you will be fine. Would have liked to see weather sealing on it nonetheless.
    Fantastic video Dunna! Please make a video on the new Sigma releases 56mm 1.4 DC DN and 40 mm and 40 mm 1.4 DG HSM Art if Sigma is willing to send them to you for a test. Looking forward to these lenses.
