I have a boatload of Sigma Art lenses (I have a set both for Canon and for Nikon), and I adore them. sure, the 135mm weighs the same as some long telephoto lenses, but I love the look it produces anyway. If I'm shooting a prime off of a tripod, it's probably a Sigma. To compound my sins, I like the Tamron SP primes for hand held work because they are stabilized. I don't own a single Zeiss or Voitlander lens. I do also have a collection of very old glass (mostly old M42 screw mount lenses and Nikon ai and ais lenses) but generally speaking, I prefer autofocus lenses with all other things being equal.

I own the sigma 105mm 1.4, it has single-handedly made me start using a monopod, a stabilizing video backpack, a left side wooden handle, and a back problem. Totally worth it though.
3D Pop is real, but I was surprised to see in the test shots of the Sigma vs your Zeiss 55mm, that actually the Sigma looked just as 3D! It's nowhere near the Voigtlander 20mm but it's not bad. Proud to say I've owned the 18-35mm for 8 years now and will never sell it, I just keep adapting it to new camera bodies.
I think the 3D pop is really just contrast. The Sigma has a lot more contrast vs the other lenses and in general is sharper and has more detail. This can be tweaked in post or with a filter. Sigmas are fairly clinical.
The Zeiss 55mm is actually a Sony lens; made by Sony with a rented Zeiss badge. The Voigtlander is actually a Cosina lens, made by Cosina with a rented Voigtlander badge. They're not bad lenses but it is wrong to take the licensed logo literally. They are not actual Zeiss or Voigtlander lenses, so if you think they are magical because of the logo, you are wrong.
@@darrenorange2982 its a hotly debated topic but i think there has to be more to it than contrast - i just bought some old Yashica lenses and the contrast is low but the 3D pop is unreal.

Honestly I am starting to regret sending my 18-35mm Nikon to the used camera shop. It's still there by the way. Wonder if I should buy it back considering it's been sitting there for the last half year.

Sigma lenses differ a lot. Their nicest lenses are the old DSLR lenses that are marked "EX DG" with tons of 3D pop and character. As you're using DSLR versions of Canon lenses, it wouldn't be difficult to find some old Sigmas too. The Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM is a legendary secret sauce lens (I have several copies in case I lose some). The Art lenses are good for shooting clean images. The Contemporary lenses have a bit more character. In short, Sigma has almost every type of lens that you could want.
Very entertaining video as usual. The 3d Pop (is that an invented term?) comparison was great, and showed a visible difference between the lenses. But I have to also say that the Sigma on the BMPCC4K had great skin tones.
I’m more of a telephoto guy but I kept the Sigma 18-35 as my fast wide with my Sony ZV-E1. I can use it in full frame mode with full continuous AF and with Dynamic Active stabe the lens covers the whole focal range. It’s a good companion to another special lens - the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. Both are heavy but the hart wants what it wants 😂
To test the Sigma lens in full-frame mode on the R8, you need to tape the contacts. To set the aperture, such as f/2.8, press the depth of field preview button (if the R8 has it) and then remove the lens. The aperture will be set. Afterward, tape the contacts as mentioned earlier to prevent the crop from being activated.
Like the 18-35 on my R7. In regards of colour science and R8. Faithful, manual white balance. That works for me but what the hell do I know, just a fellow hobo RUclipsr with few time and works what he gets directly out of camera 😂 Great vid as usual, happy Sunday 👍🏻
I've got the three APSC Sigma's, 16, 30, and 56, along with two FE's, 35 and 85. All of those are f/1.4. I've also got Sony's "cheap" 50 f/1.8, a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, a vintage Tamron 80-210 from the mid 80's, and a Sirui APSC 50mm 1.33x. These are basically all of the lenses I've ever used... and I understand your slant on 3D pop and the "feeling" of lenses. Perhaps my feelings would change if I had ever experienced Zeiss, but I've never been let down by the Sigma's. I don't have the luxury of testing/playing with a lot of different varieties, so maybe that's a blessing.
I've sold all my lenses for the sigma 18-35 and the 50-100. Couldn't be happier. Wanted to go after the EF L primes but the cost was too ridiculous from what i could get out of just 2 lenses.
I too sold 300 vintage size and cocina lenses for my sigma dream team and I haven't been happier haven't looked back once haven't ever cried no really I don't cry that often well okay really I cry everyday but still sigma is amazing
Another amazing vintage camera which has yet to be equaled on the photography side but not for video of course is the Leica M8 which is a dream camera because you'll shell out $2,000 for something which might fry out in a second and be a brick but my God the black and white on that thing it's just glorious probably the best ever made sometimes I think it even beats tri-x film
The Sig on the BM looked fantastic. Great skin tones and a nice filmic look. I had that lens for years when I was rocking Canon C300 II and it was a workhorse which delivered some fantastic images. So it should work super well on the BM
I have an 18-35 for Nikon f-mount so when I adapt it to the m4/3 mount of my BMPCC4k, I can have a manual aperture ring (due to Nikon’s mechanical linkage) and enough flange distance to put anything I want between the lens and the camera (speedbooster, filters, etc.) :) It’s a super versatile lens-biggest downside is definitely the weight, with my setup requiring a lens support Will say it’s built like a tank though.
The 18-35 on a Metabones XL for M43 gives you a constant f/1.1 with an APS-H crop (close to FF). Granted that f/1.1 is purely for exposure and doesn't really effect DoF but for me that's a good thing, the ultra stabilization on a G9 with a workable focus plane for video is such a great tool to have when shooting travel videos especially at night.
If you're interested in a fun ... relatively cheap lens rabbit hole...Minolta Rokkors. Probably not really wide enough for vlogging...may not have the extreme Toney (except the legendary 58 1.2....oooohhhh that's nice Toney) ....but...those colors. Vintage 70's baby.
I love my Rokkor-X lenses so much. Have the 135 f2.8, 50mm f1.7, 58mm f1.4, and a 50mm f3.5 macro. The COLORS are so good and they've almost always attached to my Lumix S5.
I love your videos and your personality, but I'm glad to see most of the viewers love the Sigma 18-35. I have some nice prime lenses, but I always f8nd myself reaching for my 18-35. I add a pro-mist filter if i want to reduce the sharpness a tad. I didn't see any difference in your 3D pop example. Maybe you need to do a blind 3D pop test with multiple lenses.
I sold my 18-35 and 50-100 about 4 years ago, when I made the switch to the sony a7iii, and I still miss them every day. Sometimes I wish i switched to the xt-3 instead.....
Personally, I don't see the 3d pop you are talking about. I bet if you take the Pepsi challenge with those lenses, you won't see it either, at least not every time. On my OG and P4K, I have the MB .71 Speedbooster, and you can control the Tones on both cameras. The 18-35 goes down to F1.3 with the Speedbooster. That Sigma 16mm looks fantastic on the 6400, or any other camera, plus it's cheap. I rate the 18-35 #1, and the 16mm #2 as far as the best lenses from Sigma, at least the ones I have tried.

For a fairly logical explanation of what "3-D Pop" is, see the article: "MICRO-CONTRAST, THE BIGGEST OPTICAL LUXURY OF THE WORLD". I do have one minor disagreement with the article, however. The author claims that 3-D pop is independent of resolution. That is incorrect. Imagine a single eight by ten inch pixel that has a billion color variations or shades of grey. When we look at it, we will see only one color, since it is only one pixel. In order for enormous dynamic range to be effective, high resolution is necessary, and the higher the better. On DXOMARK, the color depth is called "Portrait". What is being measured is how many different values can be stored in a single pixel (on a logarithmic scale).
Yes, I love my Leica 9mm. Combined with the digital zoom and ex tele converter on G9, I don't even use my zoom anymore (for video). Also the jokes in this one, laughed real hard!
I recently filmed a boudoir shoot with a new Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8 MKII cost over £1200 and a Helios 44-2 bought £40 of ebay. The Helios put the Sigma to shame. The Helios felt like it got black mist, low contrast filters built in, the roll off was excellent, bokeh and overall feel made it look organic. The Sigma was harsh looking mess and if in good lighting look very video-ish.
I love sigma for astrophotography when corner sharpness does actually matter. Also well designed for it, you can get a lens warmer on them without covering focus ring, zoom lock, MF toggle and weather sealed.
@jeirg-lr8vf - I've used the 18-35 (EF mount) with my GH5 for years and love it, but what really surprised me is that I'm still loving it with my S5IIX and MC21 adapter. The S5IIX does use an APSC mode upon detecting the lens, but it's still 4K and I like the look. It's the lens that just keeps on giving.
If you think it's odd that each lens is weird because it has color variance, like some are warm and some are cool, wait 'til you find some of the lenses that are warm in sunlight and cool in shadow without changing color balance. My vintage 28mm Soligor is frustrating to shoot video with for that reason
Vintage lenses tend to do that because everyone shot on the same films back then. Therefore, lens coatings were used to give different brands different character. Warm highlights and cool shadows is a way to increase the general contrast. Most films would also have warm highlights and cool shadows.
The Sigma 18-35 shot was my preference in every shot you posted on screen. Change your living room angle field of view and stop hating on the OG Sigma 18-35. 😂
Maybe if you catually used the lens on a sensor it was made for like BMPCC 6K or Canon c70 or R7 or Sony 6700 you could get enough detail and subject separation?
I used to own the 18 to 35 art it had a lot of Nikon d7200 and absolutely love it, never really used it for video though mainly just photography but it was phenomenal for everything, I also had the 50 to 80 art or whatever it was something like that, never really noticed a problem with depth but I got super good super sharp images, next time I view photos I'm going to try and pay attention to the 3D depth thingy and see if I know it's much of a difference lol
Time for a home makeover video? Gotta love when one system decides to make it so you have to turn the lens the opposite direction from every other known system when mounting the lens to the body. Have a rockin' day!
What would you recommend as a good video lens for fuji, most for travel videos? I literally watched all videos on yt on this aspect, but I get the filling that most RUclips rs are just trying to sell me ad products
I've been kinda waiting for this video lol!! All my vlogs (except maybe 3 or 4) are all with the 18-35 but, because I'm on Canon M6 2 I have a viltrox speed booster so I get FF every time and no crop shooting in 4K.... I actually get 1.2 vs. 1.8😳😳 definitely heavy af but I desperately love this lens 😂😂 Good shit as usual 💯🫡
I have a conspiracy: when sony releases their first "budged" medium format camera. The guys at Sigma will be: "gentlemen, that was our plan all along, we build 127 Lenses for medium format, and no one noticed a thing, I knew it from the very beginning it would pay off one day."
Got this lens for my Sigma SD H, and never fall for it, the range is just too small to call it a zoom, replaced it with Sigma 28 1.4 and got much better rendering in the same size package
Can I suggest you do a photo session of several photos to compare and see if 3D pop is real, A and B, then let us vote which one is which, then unveil the results in the next episode? You might be biased towards the Zeiss
“Some lenses are … soft … and it’s not like I like that.” Oh facepalm haha. That’s all you prefer lol. Every side by side comparison you seem to like the soft/blurry one. The Canon R8 vs EOS R video for example, at 8:45 discussing vintage vs. modern lenses. Love the channel.
I have the Sigma 40 mm that’s so so flat rendering. I’ve started buying up certain Voigtlander lenses . Then got the Leica 90mm f/2.0 Summicron pre asph . Nice glass
I couldn't see the forest for the trees 😝 Cold as Ice ... nice Foreigner reference👍 I have the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art and it's a great lens on the Canon 5D Mark IV even works great on the R6 with an adapter👍👍
The Sigma 18-35mm is a good compromise lens. Being 1.8f is pretty good for just about anything.. then match it with 18-35mm is pretty much acceptable for anything. It has a crazy big brother. The 50-100mm 1.8f. That one is a portrait zoom maniac. But not as good as beautiful as the full frame 1.4f 85mm
I wonder if the 3D pop you are looking for in a Sigma lens would be found in their Contemporary line? Such as the 35 or 50 DG DN f2 lenses. Now that you are opened to Sigma, I hope if you get the change to test one or all of these lenses, go for it. They seem pretty good and fairly small. Its just the ART lenses that are monster MOFO's.
Honestly I record most of my RUclips Talking Heads with the Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 and it is not heavy at all; also usable for vlogging… it is no art lense though, but sharp for video on my A7IV (don‘t throw anything I know only 60fps in crop, but hey 120p in FHD 🤣). 3D Pop? Don‘t know, apparently not, but also personal preference, right!? Also did a review about this lense on my channel and Autofocus is, as you said very fast on it. Price, 899,- better than Sony’s 2000,- … Anyway, great entertaining video as always.
I'm sorry that this will probably be an even more stupid than stupid question. How do you feel about a Helios 44-2 lens? I've got a z30 and I'm still new at filming, but they look fun.
My Helios 44-2 58mm f2 M42 Mount cost me all of $89 with shipping and tax included. It's clear as a bell without a single spec of fungus. Got it from Ukraine on eBay. I have some old Thorium lenses, but some people are scared of those. But hey, I can truthfully say, "I'm dying to take this shot!"

I add a pro-mist filter if i want to reduce the sharpness a tad. I didn't see any difference in your 3D pop example. Maybe you need to do a blind 3D pop test with multiple lenses.
Excellent video 😮!
I sold my 18-35 and 50-100 about 4 years ago, when I made the switch to the sony a7iii, and I still miss them every day. Sometimes I wish i switched to the xt-3 instead.....
great stuff as usual. Love your videos!!
3400 views and 120 comments in four hours. He clearly knows what he is doing. He has interesting content and he's funny as a dad joke marathon. I think I would watch his videos if he talked about nothing but the hair on his knuckles.
@@danncorbit3623 I have been watching his channel an commenting on his videos since he was in the Philippines. I can't remember if he got his X3000 before me, or if I got it first, But that is the way I found his channel, by doing a search for the X3000. Back then, nobody even knew what it was.
I own it. Love this lens. Great all around lenses
This episode lighting is so good.
I bought that Nikon 40mm thru your links and I love it on my Z7ii.
Yes, I love my Leica 9mm. Combined with the digital zoom and ex tele converter on G9, I don't even use my zoom anymore (for video). Also the jokes in this one, laughed real hard!
What is this 3D pop you talk about and does my orange Fanta qualify?
If you were interested in photography and not video I would say you had to check out that Fuji S5 Pro which is still a top camera 20 years later
But that's just a rebadged Nikon D200 afaik.
I bought that 40mm Nikon and loved its dimensional rendering but my copy was unusable . I returned it . Yours looks very sharp
Why not make the sensor in a round shape to fit the lens? This way you can choose aspect ratio later :)
I love sigma for astrophotography when corner sharpness does actually matter. Also well designed for it, you can get a lens warmer on them without covering focus ring, zoom lock, MF toggle and weather sealed.
The image with the Voigtlander in the forest. Is the most perfect example of flatness. That I have ever seen yet.
Sigma 18-35 is great only with panasonic m43 with speedbooster. Try it with g9ii
He does not have it, if he did that would be all he would use
@jeirg-lr8vf - I've used the 18-35 (EF mount) with my GH5 for years and love it, but what really surprised me is that I'm still loving it with my S5IIX and MC21 adapter.
The S5IIX does use an APSC mode upon detecting the lens, but it's still 4K and I like the look. It's the lens that just keeps on giving.
Sigma colors look so much better than Zeiss. Plus the image just looks better overall. Sigma for the win!
Ich stimme dir voll zu ❤
If you think it's odd that each lens is weird because it has color variance, like some are warm and some are cool, wait 'til you find some of the lenses that are warm in sunlight and cool in shadow without changing color balance. My vintage 28mm Soligor is frustrating to shoot video with for that reason
Vintage lenses tend to do that because everyone shot on the same films back then. Therefore, lens coatings were used to give different brands different character. Warm highlights and cool shadows is a way to increase the general contrast. Most films would also have warm highlights and cool shadows.
3:53 Hey Kasey. I saw the 3DP immediately in both photos.
I can't wait for your Tamron 17-28mm review... lol 😅
I found a vintage sigma 70-135 macro at a thrift shop. Its so lovely
The Sigma 18-35 shot was my preference in every shot you posted on screen. Change your living room angle field of view and stop hating on the OG Sigma 18-35. 😂
Let’s get a video ranking the top 5 3D pop lenses
Maybe if you catually used the lens on a sensor it was made for like BMPCC 6K or Canon c70 or R7 or Sony 6700 you could get enough detail and subject separation?
I actually have two of these 18-35 lenses I love them so much.
Kudos for the rear-view-mirror solution to the no flippy screen problem, sir!!! 😂
I love all my Sigma glass.
What would you recommend as a good video lens for fuji, most for travel videos? I literally watched all videos on yt on this aspect, but I get the filling that most RUclips rs are just trying to sell me ad products
can the lens create flicker light?
How? Where?
I love the sigma 40mm f1.4, it’s a beast - Otus quality but with af is crazy
Q: What's that 'mirror attachment thingy' you're using as a 'flipscreen hack'? [edit: at 1:23]
I use it all the time in full frame mode with my fx3. I hope the can male a full frame version with the f1.8 aperture.
There is a full frame sigma 20-35 f2 if that’s any help
@@LiveMyJourneyTom I did not know about that one. Ill test it.
"That didn't make any *cut*" hahah. zeiss level comedy
So often in your examples I am just not seeing it. But your voice is nice.
If you want 3D pop from Sigma - go for the Series I lenses - e.g. the 65mm f/2.
Sigma is sharp works well on the sony apsc and an excellent value. The zeiss, leica nosebleed lenses are not for poor scrubs like me.
Can I suggest you do a photo session of several photos to compare and see if 3D pop is real, A and B, then let us vote which one is which, then unveil the results in the next episode? You might be biased towards the Zeiss
Canon should make new EF cameras. Either a camera fits inside a side pocket or it has to have an optical viewfinder.
Bro you’re such a cool dude. Thank you for the video and explanation
All I want is a perfect set design.
Have you played with Sigma’s 50-100 f1.8?
Sigma 105 1.4 will pop I promise
Wil this work on FulFrame and motor noise and AF ?
Sigma has various colors. My 56mm f1.4 Sony E mount one is really really warm. I get an orange skin tone no matter what white balance I use.
MIne doesn't do that.
What gamma?
Died laughing at the grandma joke
8:40 "I'm easily debunked"...story of my life.
He did a video on this lens five years ago. Can I tell you his consistency is unmatched. It was meh for him back then and basically meh for him now
bm was again the best
I'm sorry that this will probably be an even more stupid than stupid question. How do you feel about a Helios 44-2 lens? I've got a z30 and I'm still new at filming, but they look fun.
I wish sigma makes one for the aps-c e-mount
For a guy who rave about 3D pop, you have a disgusting lack of Helios lenses in your life and old Canon FD lenses.
@@danncorbit3623 I'm new to the whole lens thing. What are Helios lens? I'm trying to slowly get my lens game going without going broke. I have a Blackmagic Cinema 6k, so it uses the Ef mount.
