I’m calling BS on this.
1 in 10 on UC using foodbanks is a BS statistic. If you sign on for UC, the first thing they say to you is “register for a foodbank”
I suspect the real figure is more like 1 in 3 people on UC are going to foodbanks. And I’m Barnsley DGH, my brother who is a consultant physician there had his office along with two other knocked in to one to have a foodbank put in for staff, working staff, nurses, junior doctors, physios, people working.
The British government are relying on donations from people who are doing ok to supply what the government is patently not doing.

Having food banks is like having medals to a tory. Very uplifting moggy said.
I used to volunteer at a food bank, but dealing with hungry people was upsetting me too much. To obtain food people needed to have been referred by another agency. The food bank was open for just two days per week. The families details were recorded on a computer and the number of times they could be issued with food was strictly limited, to avoid dependency. I worked in the picking area. There I would pack a bundle of food following a list according to the number in the family. So many cans of veg balanced by cans of fish or meat etc.
Consequently people would arrive often not having eaten for a few days. We kept biscuits at the reception desk so people could wolf them down whilst waiting. People looked ashamed and embarrassed being there. To make matters worse food banks are run by christian groups and so atheists like myself had to endure a blessing or a prayer.
I believe that even the most hardened and
corrupt Tory would be cured the first time they meet children faint with hunger, along with their embarrassed parents. I had expected to meet homeless tramps, what I saw coming though the door were respectable decent people.
Well food banks are now serving the people who used to donate. Shows you how anyone can become in need of them.
Just imagine in a caring country where our leaders tell Mr British energy supplier enough is enough you can only charge this amount to your customers for energy instead of saying well done on your £million bonus and your billion in profits . Now wouldn't that be novel .
When I was assistant manager of a food bank four out of ten clients were on Universal Credit, a third had jobs. Neither situation covered their basic household expenses. These were genuine people who had hit a rough patch, but were let down by the government unwilling to make any effort to help. Eventually most got back their lives, and were proud to be able to donate to the food bank.
for over a year now my local foodbank have refused me food , i made a complaint they twisted it and barred me , ive appealed only to be ignored by council police etc , i would rather these institutions are not required in a community , when the foodbanks get run by those who are ok with denying a hungry person food then they become a problem in society even if all official organisations think they are brilliant

Nobody ever gets turned away, especially our community centre owned and run by our housing association. There are food bags, free bacon butties on a Friday, free lunches 3 dinnertime, bread from the local bakery and fresh fruit and veg from the local supermarket. No one goes hungry because we have all been hungry. All the volunteers are or have lived on the poverty line.

The first responsibility of any government, of any political leaning, is to ensure the safety and welfare of the people of the country. That includes making provision for health, education, housing etc. it also includes ensuring that people who have met with misfortune have enough money to live on - pay their necessary bills and so on. Eating food to sustain their existence should not be a privilege doled out at the whim of government. Nor should this provision need to be met through the charity of others - many of whom are very far from rich themselves. This government has turned food bank provision into one of the very rare expanding enterprises in this country.
I saw this and immediately thought how normalising food banks to the extent one is proud of having such excellent units in any area is to praise a dung heap for having the nicest flowers growing on it.

These people are evil.
The UK is not a 3rd world country, though you could easily be mistaken for thinking it is. There should be no such thing as food banks in a supposedly rich country. Our hopeless politicians have got a lot to answer for.
My God, those videos of people queuing at food banks really reminded me of old footage from Eastern Europe in the 1970s.
I had to have a teaching assistant when I was at school, and I remember one of them saying that she'd prefer it if she didn't have the job. Not because she didn't like the job; but that ultimately it would be lovely if every child could learn effectively without the need of extra support. This conversation always comes to mind when I hear people say how wonderful food banks are. I have a number of friends who volunteer their time in food banks, and they are good people, but this doesn't negate the fact that a society needing their kindness isn't an indictment on that society. It boggles my mind that some people - especially ones in charge of said society - can't understand this distinction.
It's a fundamental problem that every full-time job in the UK does not pay what it costs to feed and cloth yourself and your family.
It is exacerbated by cuts in social spending and the erecting of trade barriers leading to food shortages and rising prices.
I have worked for 45 years and never had a problem paying my way. So I can’t agree with your comment. And before you get on your high horse I’m from a working class council house family. Sometimes people need to help themselves rather than blame others for there lot in life.

I volunteer as a delivery driver for my local foodbank. And I can attest, most people don’t want to take donations from us. Most people are embarrassed about it. I often have to say other things like, “Well this food would be wasted if you didn’t take it. And you know food waste is one of the biggest contributor’s to climate change.” Just to make them think that this is helping others with Climate change rather than people helping them. Because most people feel ashamed. And whilst what I tell them is also true. The fact they need to use the foodbank, like you say, is indicative of our government’s failings.
My dad also runs a homeless charity in my area and works with a few others in the area. And he sees many rough sleepers around. The numbers the council records have gone up 13x from 2011 to 2018. And when I asked my dad how indicative that was of what he has seen whilst volunteering, he reckons the council’s numbers shown are about 20% of what the actual number is.
And charities in my local area have to house these people when the council and the government aren’t doing anything. And the charities work at getting people off the streets very well. But again, they shouldn’t be needed.
Good afternoon Max and all here. No they don't understand that they failed and they are falling apart from the people 😮

Well said Max.
They know full well about inflation (at least I hope they do!) they're banking on people seeing a smaller number as being good!
What you say about using a foodbank is correct Max, I'm going to have to go to mine on Friday. I desperately try not to, at times I'd rather be hungry. It's humiliating, embarrassing, being given a couple of bags of food (as appreciative as I am, the items are not 'luxury items', which I'm sure some think they are!) then told 'you can take 4 items from this area, 4 from that etc.
It's truly embarrassing.
Don't be embarrassed ,it's this Government who should be embarrassed but I do feel for you x
