  • Holy cow batman, Spyderco has some super excellent knives for 2016. Doing one of my catalog reviews gives Spyderco some free and valuable publicity but more importantly serves the interest of TNP Knife Nation (who helped make many of their models very successful). We will cover the marketing aspects of a "tournament level" player, still setting industry standards. Then we will launch into a page by page review of many knives, pausing on the standouts. So grab the popcorn and get ready for Spyderco Nirvana.

      Knife sharpener recommendations or reviews for the future? I've been buying alot of knives over the years, so I haven't been sharpening at all. I should really sharpen the old ones! I do sharpen my filet knives, I just use the Rapala sharpener for that though.

      +Mike Halverson Nutnfancy uses the edge pro apex. Hes said in those videos that hes isnt planning on reviewing any more sharpening equipment because he likes the edge pro that much.
      I have one and its great. It does have some limitations and is on the expensive side. But basically everything has limitations in some respect. If you want comprehensive reviews on sharpening stuff check out some of the channels like jdavis, richardblaine, solosknifereviews etc.
      They all do mainly freehand sharpening. Otherwise you could check out some of the other outdoor gear reviewers lateboyscout, cutlerylover, and others. they tend to use more of the gear like the sharpmaker, edge pro, wicked edge and the like.

      +test18258 Hey thanks for all that great info. I use to have a guy with wet stones do my blades. Unfortunately he moved. I was thinking about getting a belt sander / sharpener. Any thoughts on those? I think they cost about $70 at a local hardware store.

    I'm not trying to be that guy but.... When has VG10 steel become such a poor performance steel? I think some of the problem is you put your angle on the blade and it dulls faster. I have a spyderco edge maker I leave on my nightstand. A couple passes and I get my knife hair shaving sharp. I'm sure you can get it sharper but at the cost of edge retention. If you are dulling zdp189 that fast either you are putting too sharp of an angle on your blade or cutting something best suited for a utility knife...like the Gerber eab or Jr. Stanley utility knife you previously reviewed. I know ever blade steel will dull but when did s30v and vg10 become subpar steels?

    Thanks for the comprehensive video! Spyderco happens to be my favorite, as well. From a retailer standpoint, I've noticed knife knewbies seem to prefer the combo edge, where the real knife guys (who are into having a proper edge) prefer plain edge with a decent belly. oh yeah, the knewbies almost always choose tanto. keep rockin nutn!

  • @uzi75020
    @uzi75020 8 лет назад

    I've never been a fan of the serrated blades either. I bought an Endura with a combo blade years ago. I've found that the serrations just catch on stuff are a pain in the ass. It doesn't even cut rope or fibers any faster than a sharp plain edge.

    I definitely look forward to this video (and the catalog) every year. My one complaint here is the lack of a desire to do a krv on the Matriarch II and/or the Civilian. I've noticed that Nutn's EDC system usually contains a large folder (Endura size), a smaller fold (Delica size), and another folder or two (duplication here, with weight being a large consideration) in his fanny pack. The criticism he's used on the Matriarch II/Civilian is that it draws unwanted attention when deployed. However, he's also pegged the large folder that he's carrying as something that fills the self defense role.I've dabbled in martial arts for a number of years. I've had some opportunities to train with knives, just enough to realize my desire not to ever have to use one in a self defense role. If, God forbid, I did, I would want something that would fill that role in the best possible way. Understanding my limitations with my abilities, along with the reduced dexteriry that I would have in that scenario (adrenaline, nervousness, confinement, etc), the matriarch II/Civilian would be much more ideal to have on you (an Emerson wave Matriach II most ideal maybe, factoring in weight and deployment) vs an Endura (or other large folder). Not only because of the application being easier (need for less training) but also the intimidation factor. In that scenario, I want the negative response when deployed.So I'm just curious Nutn, with your Delica (or other small folder) doing many of the tasks you need on a daily basis and also having a 3.5 inch blade in your fanny pack, why not go with a 3.something oz Matriarch II as a primary self defense knife? I mean you are a guy who has thought of about everything for your EDC system, it just seems like this one would check another box for you (or at least better fill the SD role you mention frequently).Thanks again for all the vids. I've been a fan since '07 I think and just love all the gear reviews. Your philosophy vids have also been great and have had an impact on my preparedness (thanks for that as well).

    Native 5 G10 S35VN is still the best value for money imho. High end steel, and solid construction with metal liners, built in the USA. FRN handled knives without steel liners look and feel cheap and obviously take a lot less time and money to put together. There is a place for really lightweight knives, but I prefer my knives to have liners under the scales (unless it is a titanium handle with a Chris Reeve lock).

    I had to request a catalog of my own after this video. Thanks again for another great knife vid Nutn! So many knives I want, it's unfortunate that Spydercos tend to cost quite a bit. Up here in Canada, the price can make them nearly inaccessible for most (Amazon's price on the Pukko, for instance, is $267 CAD...considering I bought my CS R1 Military Classic for around $100 less, I'm gonna have to say no thanks). They're still great blades, though, and I still want them! I'm just going to have to collect slowly, I guess.

    Cool review. I live in Golden CO, spyderco just had their factory sell. They sell all the knives that have a small scratch or a knick in the medal (not on the edge). Picked up a couple for dirt cheap. All day I picked up the Manix 2 and 3 a few times. It felt SO lite but had a very solid lock up system. Should have picked it up.

    So how do you feel about Spyderco enforcing a MAP (minimum advertised price) policy that will kill Spydercos low prices on large sites such as Amazon (but they will be good for small local dealers because you can get Spydercos on Amazon for $5 more than dealer cost making it impossible to compete when local businesses get stuck with sales tax and shipping fees. )

    Nutn, the Manix 2 in the translucent blue in the S110V is a limited run, they have some left at BladeHQ for just over $100.

    Nutn I can't believe your doing this catalog review when the greatest .45 handgun has hit the market! Why aren't you going to the corner of the room where you have your demi god Walther PPQ 45 sitting on a stand surrounded by candles and sheep's blood waiting to be tested and reviewed? I know you gotta have one!!!!

    Nutn, that Lightweight Manix you wrote BEST next to is already out, I've had mine for over 6 months now. The G10 version has yet to be released though. That's the one thing I don't like about Spyderco. They'll say a knife is new even though they've been selling it for the past year.

    I'd be really suprised if the Nirvana came out at 4.8 ounces... I've made integrals before, and the lightest I could get the Mk12s down to was 5.5 ounces, and that's by tapering the frames and removing 1/3rd of the material and running a very light blade with as much material as possible. The Mk12 was a little longer tho so idk. Integrals... not supremely light, very hard to get them on a diet. It's no trivial matter, you've got a big chunk of Ti there to mill out...

    • @Mister_Phafanapolis
      @Mister_Phafanapolis 8 лет назад

      +Will Moon I think people like integrals because they're difficult to manufacturer and technical, not because they're the lightest way to build a knife. Microtech Anax in ~ 5.25 oz in titanium and the Lionsteel TiSpine is 3.6 oz.
      If weight was everything then we'd see more carbon fiber handles without liners, a titanium liner lock or sub-frame lock insert and only one standoff / lanyard hole to hold it together. That'd be sick, IMO.

    • @WillMoon
      @WillMoon 8 лет назад

      Meh, you can get light with just Ti. My Mk8s are 3 ounces with a 3.6 inch blade and they're a straight Ti framelock. They're just skeletonized like crazy, they don't use a lot of screw which are steel and therefor heavy, and they have a taper on the frames to reduce 1/3rd of the material in the frame. You can get a little lighter with CF or G10 frames and a sub-liner but not a whole lot, not for that size blade.

    • @Mister_Phafanapolis
      @Mister_Phafanapolis 8 лет назад

      ***** I'm not disagree absolutely that titanium knives can't be light, but if you wanted an ultimately light knife, you'd ditch as much metal as you possibly could.
      How much do you lose on your knives going from full steel screws to titanium screws?

    • @WillMoon
      @WillMoon 8 лет назад

      You can drill and tap Ti perfectly fine, most all makers do it. It's more difficult to tap than stainless steel, which is why you'll frequently see threaded inserts inset into titanium. I typically thread mill the Ti on my knives and it's never once given me a problem.

    Blade HQ has the Nirvana listed at $431, I'd rather get a Sebenza.

    • @fate930
      @fate930 8 лет назад

      +DRum886 Check out the Nirvana closer S90V and instead of two pieces of titanium with backspacers the Nirvana's handle is one solid piece of Ti. This really is a superior knife IMHO.

    • @DRum886
      @DRum886 8 лет назад

      I understand what you're saying, but I would really rather get a seventh at that price point, definitely not knocking the nirvana, it looks really good, but I don't own a sebenza yet, so I want to go with crv.

    • @fate930

      Sebenzas are nice I am an authorized CRK direct dealer. Let me warn you if you have never handled one before you buy it, you will be underwhelmed but the knife will grow on you the more it is used. There is no such thing as a CRK safe queen unless you get a Damascus mammoths tooth one lol.
