My eyes went way wide open when I searched for a Spyderco Delica video on RUclips and a Hickok45 review popped up. I didn't know you did Spyderco reviews.
My EDC is the Spyderco Manix 2. The thing I love about Spyderco is their blade shape. They pack as much usefulness as they can into small blade sizes with easy opening.
Been researching these Spyderco folders for a couple of days, now. I finally made up my mind on this delica 4 - and viola! I see here that it's Uncle Hickok approved...
Good thing you got the Delica w/ VG-10, may not be the hardest steel ever, but it will still hold an edge for a while, and is a breeze to sharpen, The perfect balance of edge-retention and ease of sharpening
Spyderco has been very good about replacing my earlier Enduras when the plastic (polymer) clip would break off. They even sent me a new one when I lost one in the mud while I was in Bosnia in 1996. Great company! I have tried carrying other knives but I am always back with the Spyderco.
I am also a Spyderco nut and have been since the 1994 when I got my first one at age 14, a fully serrated Endura .since then I've bought and lost many Enduras, Delicas and police models .I now keep them down in my pocket just like you do Mr. Hickok 45 ,and haven't lost one since, about five years on my current Endura 4, also you said it's not the company, but they are a true American success story ,ran by a father and son team and are innovators in the industry.
I just ordered a griptilian with a sheep’s foot hole just like the Spyderco. Super excited. I also got custom laser work on the coated blade as well. It’s gonna be a very sexy knife.
I have a stainless fully serrated one, and a variant called the salt 1, yellow polymer handles and an absolutely rust proof steel. I want to buy this version too though, havent got a plain edged one yet. Spyderco's rock!!
We need an update!! Does Hickok still carry the delica 4!?!? This video started my knife addiction 4 years ago and stumbling back across it now just brings a smile to my face ❤️👌🏼 love this channel and am greatfull for the memories
Anything assisted or automatic isn't long term reliable. OH (One-Handed) or fixed is the way to go. Plus if hickock45 owns and/or uses or just gives it a thumbs up then it's a no brainer.
Hi Hickok45 I love your vidoes and this one made me laugh so much. I first started watching you about two years ago when I lived in the UK but at the time I could never imagine that one day I would have the freedom to be able to own and shoot some of the guns that you have tested in your videos. Then I got the chance to escape from the UK and come to your great and free country to live and work and I am able to experience the joy of owning and shooting some of the guns that I've seen you use in your videos. I love the Spyderco Delica and have one myself (jail time in the UK by the way!). I just wanted you to know that you can get Benchmade knives with the thumb hole which I also prefer and they make some great knives too.
In the UK it's considered possession of a deadly weapon. If you have a good attorney you might slip with a fine, but if you have anything else on your criminal record, you're going to jail. Europe is fucked up.
HankDCFC dude America is not the land of the free that's bullshit, I own firearms, I own handguns and semi-automatic rifles and I live in England if you have a reason to own such firearms you can own them here in England. God look up your laws before moving.
Not correct. UK knife law simply states that we can carry "without good reason" a knife with cutting edge less than 3 inches that is a non locking folder. In other words, you can carry what you like (assuming it isn't a banned weapon like a balisong or push dagger) as long as you have good reason to do so. Going camping and doing some bushcraft? 4 Inch fixed blade is not a problem.
i am also a fan of spyderco. i own a few of them. i am also a big fan of the ease of opening with the spyderhole as i am wearing gloves at work quite a bit and it's just quicker and easier to open. thanks for sharing.
My first and only Spyderco is a Manbug in ZDP-189 steel. Can’t imagine needing anything else, the thing stays razor sharp and is maybe the coolest keychain addition ever.
@codyaustinpemberton , Yeah, I agree that most of them are not that cool looking. To me, though, there's a certain "coolness" in something that functions so well, which is why I didn't resist Glocks for very long. That well-placed, incredibly functional hole in the blade is beyond cool for me, especially whenever I pick up a folder that doesn't have it. It's like picking up a bucket that has no handle or something.
OK I'm jealous, you can just drive over to Smokey Mtn Knife Works ?? I went to SMKW once as a kid while we were on vacation.. I've never forgotten it. I saw some recent pics and it's even better now.. Another great video, thanks
Wow, once again, a man after my own heart. I started carrying a G19 in 1989 and a Spyderco Endura since about 1992. I still carry a Spyderco Endura 4 w half straight half seraited right now.
My delica4 arrived today. I picked up an orange one for backpacking carry mostly. Spyderco is a great company, headquarters about 15 minutes from my house. I have 4 spyderco knives now, different models for different roles, love them all. Thanks for the video, have been a fan for a long time.
I also carry a spyderco and I also like mine a lot. For us college students I am glad that they make the byrd series of knives because you can pick one up for an affordable $18- $20. I carry a cara cara.
@parrothead2581 , No, you are exactly correct; it does look more like a tick than a spider. Believe me, I know what ticks look like; I deal with them almost daily.
I love Spyderco knives, I have the Delica 4 exclusive in OD green FRN handles and black coated Cru-wear blade , very nice knife. I also own the Spyderco Endura 4 in Wharncliffe and S30V teal version . Very nice quality knives .
Spyderco knives are really cool, and have got to be one of my favorites, alongside Benchmade and Kershaw. Some Benchmade models have the opening holes in them, and i highly recommend some of Kershaw's blades with the speed-safe mechanism and flipper very fast.
I have been carrying a benchmade griptilian for about 2 years now with the same type of deployment hole. I have to agree with you its very functional and now I dont think I would ever buy another knife with thumb studs.
Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is my favorite pocket knife! It is the hole that sets it apart from my other pocket knives, plus the compression lock system on the paramilitary is very nice and safer than a liner lock and easier to use than the AXIS lock on Benchmades.
Just bought this knife. Very comfortable in my hand. I thought I would prefer the size of the dragonfly, but I am surprised at the comfort of this one.
@zaco519 yep. it does not change the fact the blade has play. it has a bad steel and just because it says benchmade does not mean it is benchmade quality.
I like to carry a small, thin knife for opening boxes and heavy plastic bags (I work in a hospital radiology department--lots of cardboard boxes! Everything from chemicals to office supplies). I like the Gerber STL for that--I can put it in the shirt pocket of my scrubs and it's not even noticable.
A tip on deploying a thumbstud knife is to flip your thumb like you would if you were flipping a coin up in the air. Like how you put your thumb tip under your index finger before you flip the coin, you do the same but instead put your thumb on the thumbstud. The thumbstud should be under your thumb nail, about 1/8 to a 1/4 inch under your thumbnail. Then flick your thumb like you would with a coin. They also have flipper knives that you flip like a light switch and others with a button or an axis style lock which are pretty sick as well. But I love spyderco so you still on the right path.
the benchmade 550hg griptilian also has a round opening hole. it was the first benchmade i ever had and it was a pretty exceptional knife. i am a spyderco lover though, they make good functional knives. i have several and some are pretty fancy but, i really like the plain old enduras, delicas, and the natives if you scratch it up it doesn't matter, it's a work knife made for the working man.
I carry a Spyderco everyday. I love it so much I just ordered their sharpening set. Everybody at the grocery store I work at carries a box cutter, but they don't cut it for heavy duty jobs. My Spyderco does.
I love knives im a big time collector myself although I don't review them as much as I should I love knives and I'm gonna try a soyderco now, thanks Hickok
I have a Seiki-City Spyderco Dragonfly its blade is discoloured from hanging around my neck, great little knife, its dismembered hordes of cardboard boxes. Benchmade have a few models with the circular hole opening and of course the now discontinued/special edition Benchmade AFCK. The original design of the AFCK was to be manufactured by Spyderco. But they are expensive probably a $100 more than a delica , more for the discontinued models. Great videos, presentation and camera double thumbs up
I know I'm 11 years late to the party but better now than never I suppose, this is the most logical and factual video I've seen on the old DupeTube in a while, rather refreshing. Although, I will say that my appreciation and fondness for Spyderco knives gos deeper than the opening hole but yes it does make the most sense why have studs and shit that potentially get caught up on stuff or break not only but add extra unnecessary weight albeit not very much but still why not SHED a couple grams as well as the potential to lose or strip a tiny part and notch a hole in the blade instead. Simple but brilliant truly is I agree. However, that and the high end steel selection aside, I just find they make a very high quality knife from tip of blade to butt of handle they just feel better and the best part is the low maintenance/ease of use.
I love my Spyderco knife. Its all about the hole and the grip pattern. Great vid for anyone looking for a great EDC knife who doesn't know about these!
1991 I first purchased a Spyderco endura gen 1 no metal liners molded pocket clip... I lost it the next day 😥 search through my customers yards to no avail so back to the gun shop the next day purchased another endura still have it... I then discovered the delica which I like cuz it's smaller.. purchase a delica 2 .. which I still have and I purchased a delica 4 .. which is my EDC to this day.. but they are all serrated.. I will be purchasing a plain edge flat ground delica four soon
Awesome knife. Super easy to open, very thin and light and a very, very good cutter. The size is great, especially for front pocket carry. I usually carry the bigger Endura model nowadays, since I tend to carry it in my inside coat pocket. Both great knives.
I've carried the Spyderco Tenacious for years...Resilience and Endura 4 frn vg-10 and ZDP (didn't care for zdp version) I just ordered a Delica a few minutes ago...I think it will be a good compromise on size and comfort...I carried a kershaw 1550 ken onion ( great knife but needed lots of touch-up) and a 154cm Benchmade for years...it was a pain to sharpen at times...VG 10 seems to be an excellent compromise of hard working edge holding abillity yet easy to touch up and maintain ...I'm a Spyde
Yep. Spyderco snob here and a Glock fan. I own Kershaws, CRKTs, Bokers, Cold Steels, but the Spydercos are the end all and be all of knoves for me. Just my take on the knife thing. And you sir, are the best gun/knife channel on the Tube.
yes Hickok I love Smoky Mountain Knife Works I go down there for vacation every winter and I go there to SMKW and buy a new knife every single year for 20 years now!!! just got back a few days ago bought my first spyderco delica 4!!!! could not be happier with spyderco or SMKW!! for anyone who doesn't know about knife works think of it as the walmat of knives but 3 stories tall!
@@hickok45 thats awesome Hickok yeah every year when I stop in there on vacation it's with my parents and my dad loves going in there too. been going there for over 20 years. hope to bump into you in smkw one day! Love your videos brother keep up the good work
The Delica 4 is my favorite knife to carry as well and for the very same reasons. That silly hole idea is the greatest idea ever in a knife. I love the VG-10 steel to because I can get it razor sharp and it keeps and edge quite well. It is so light in your picket you forget you even have a knife until you need one and then, just like you I reach in to my picket and fish it out of all the other junk I happen to be caring in my pocket an cut what I wanted to be cut with out even thinking about opening it or anything, it just seams to be open already. Its a Great!! knife.
Just came upon this video and I couldn’t be more happy knowing one of my favorite RUclipsrs owns a SpyderCo knife. You can’t go wrong with these knives. I just bought my Dad a para 3, and I’m getting a Delica 4 for a buddy of mine, it’s for his birthday. 🎂🔪😎
I carried one of those for years, then tried a variety of other knives including the original Spyderco Para Military, Kershaw Storm 2, Kershaw Leek (my 2nd favorite knife), and a Kershaw Blur 2 - of all them, the Delica 4 (saber ground VG-10) is by far my favorite.
Ok...I haven't watched this vid yet but Spyderco are just down right awesome! I was a Benchmade fan until I bought a Spyderco. Now I'm all about Spyderco. Even the cheaper Chinese made versions still rock super hard! I EDC a Endura 4 and by far my most favorite knife. I actually ordered an extra just incase. Just down right great all round knife and light weight too. I have quite the collection of knives and the Endura is the top of my list. Haven't felt the Delica yet but it seems to be smaller version of the Endura. LOL, ok time to watch your vid. By the way, this is my favorite go to youtube channel now.
Excellent choice... I used to have Benchmades etc, but got rid of them all because I didn't dare to use them. They were pretty & nice, such a waste to use. A Spyderco however is a great user knife. No need to baby it, just go for it. The Delica 4 is a great choice as well, since it's small, but handy. An Endura doesn't have the same balance and is a lot thicker. Nope, for EDC I swear by my Delica. (note that my EDC is not for self-defense purposes though)
Nice. I'm not super fond of the style of that knife, but it seems to be very solid. I personally carry an Officer Suisse Swiss Victorinox, I love it. I wouldn't mind a decent folding blade since it's so fun to just 'flick' them open, but I like what I have. I absolutely cannot stand not having a knife, especially when I need one. It's always kind of satisfying when somebody needs one, and out of the entire room, you are the only person who has one.
Love the Delica 4! I have found the edge around the thumb hole is sharper than it needs to be. I have used a Dremel with a rubber polishing tip (#462) to smooth the edges. Works great.
I love your videos, hickok45! Glad to see you make a knife video too, since I love knives almost as much as I love guns. This video made me pull the trigger on the Spyderco Delica 4 today, and I am looking forward to it! I also wanted to ask. Do you also use any multi-tool like Leatherman or a Swiss Army Knife? I love those two brands as well.
@@hickok45 your video was really what convinced me to get this, and now i'm really enjoying my Delica 4 a lot.. i rotate carrying it with my Buck 110. I consider the Delica to be kind of like the Glock of knives, and the Buck to be more like the 1911.. awesome knives. Thanks Hickok45!
I just purch'd an ENDURA 4 FFG VG-10 ... Same knife but has a full flat grind (like a chef's knife) and is long enough to use for slicing thru larger fruit and even a juicy ribeye steak. I think you might like a bit longer handle and a slightly longer blade. I do, anyway. I just bought a Blue Delica 4 FFG for my daughter who keeps it on her keychain ... I liked hers so much I got myself the Endura in Coyote Brown. My WENGER RANGERGRIP 78 Swiss Army one-handed locker also has such a hole.
Yeah, once you try that nice big thumb hole a couple of times, everything else seems pretty lame, even some really expensive high-quality knives. Doesn't matter to me WHAT it is about them that might make them superior to the Sypderco, if they don't have that same large hole and open as easily, I'm not interested. That little nub, or whatever, just doesn't get it after you've gotten used to the Spyderco.
Yes sir I have a collection of pocket knives and multi tools, gerber, leatherman, swiss army, buck and some not so known brands. But spyderco is the sharpest of them all, you could shave your hands with it. Its one of my favorite and i'm glad we have something in common. more power to you sir.
@lancemannly the new Delica 4 FFG isn't a full 3 inches,it is abt 2.88 or so...i love it,very useful knife and always there when u need it,extremely lightweight as well
I liked hearing your opinion (since you don't like the word 'review'). Like you, I've owned some very fancy blades; Gerber, etc. But my pocketknife of choice is a cheapie I bought at the gas station for five or ten bucks. It's serrated on half of the blade, which makes it easy to cut through cardboard or anything tougher. I can flick it open easily, like yours, and it's easy to sharpen. I'm sure it''s a knockoff of a more expensive knife; if I ever found the nicer version I might upgrade.
You should check Lone Wolf Distributors. They sell a Spyderco Endura 4 (black polymer handle) with a built in Glock armor"s tool. You can get it engraved too. I pick one up had it engraved. Comes in very handy.
I live in germany. You may carry a fixed blade of max.12 centimeters lenght. You may carry a folder that has to be opened with 2 hands but not any knife that can be opened with one hand and of course no switchblades or other assisted openings
Hickock as long as you are on the compound shooting I am happy. Endura and delica are amazing. But, you could carry a butter knife. You cut with crazy shooting precision.
3/10/2019. Knives have come a long way in the last 9 years since I bought my Delica 4. I've bought several of them. However, I still to this day carry my Dekica 6 exclusively.
Its a shame you didn't use it on the gong.
The gong stands no chance
My eyes went way wide open when I searched for a Spyderco Delica video on RUclips and a Hickok45 review popped up. I didn't know you did Spyderco reviews.
We have several knife videos, but only with knives that I liked well enough to purchase for myself over the years.
Still carry the delica 4?

As much as he loved it it probably is. Besides Spyderco makes a quality knife so it has probably held up just fine.

I just got my first spidie myself it is a grasshopper and I am spoiled as well. they make a great knife!
I love my Spyderco knife. Its all about the hole and the grip pattern. Great vid for anyone looking for a great EDC knife who doesn't know about these!
hickok45 doing a knife video!? whoooooooa!!
I will be purchasing a plain edge flat ground delica four soon
best unintended Delica 4 commercial ever
Yes, I have a long tradition of stopping in there, too. One of the very last places I went with my dad in March of 94.
If you like the hole for opening, benchmade puts them on one of their models of the Griptilian
I have carried a knife for about a year now and its been very useful
(note that my EDC is not for self-defense purposes though)
hickok45, thanks for this excellent review. I just bought a Spyderco Delica 4 because of your review.
Super enjoyable review/rant. Loved the honesty and down to earth approach.
Keep up the good work!
All the best to you!
-Joseph
Yes, I have a couple of Leatherman tools, one from way back in the '80's and also a newer one.
Springfield and benchmade guy here😊 but love all knifes and Guns. But I truly love my tenacious and my resilience spydercos
I feel the same about the spyderco hole, I have many knives that open all kinds of ways and I always go the simplicity of the spydey hole!
Modern combat is really man against packaging. I had to fight for my life to get a Phillips One Blade shaver out of the packaging.
Too true!
yup, i have the endura 4. i dont have issues with any opening methods, so i enjoy my benchmades and spydercos alike.
Yes sir I have a collection of pocket knives and multi tools, gerber, leatherman, swiss army, buck and some not so known brands. But spyderco is the sharpest of them all, you could shave your hands with it. Its one of my favorite and i'm glad we have something in common. more power to you sir.
My EDC is the Sypderco Delica 4 with the stainless steel handle.
Man you have great taste...Spyderco,Glock,,and James Stewert Westerns!!
I'm a Spyderco Snob as well my friend.
Winchester 73 great movie!
I bet hickok45 would like the Spyderco Native 5, probably my favorite aquisition from Spyderco so far.
Benchmade has several knives that have a hole in the blade. You can get the Griptilian that way. :) Might wanna check em out, sir. Good vid.
