- The 240Z is an automotive legend. Now, 50 years later there’s a 7th generation- the Nissan Z (no more numbers) and it pays homage to the best of what came before. It’s powered by a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3-liter V6 and can be had with a 9-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. And well equipped, it’s base price comes in at around $41,000 (with shipping, naturally). Tom Voelk offers up full driving impressions of a Performance model (no teases) from outside of Las Vegas, Nevada.

About Tom: Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award (and he's won for photography, editing, producing and reporting). But really, all you need to know is in the videos.
I want everyone to know Mr. Voelk's reviews are the best. I followed him since he was with the New York Times. Best script. Best voice over. No technical overkill but enough details for enthusiasts of all ages. I am always one of the first to see his review as soon as they pop up on RUclips.
Simply amen.

Who remembers when Driven was an Apple Video Podcast, even before NYT or RUclips?
I wish Nissan a ton of success with this car. Refreshing to see a company go all out.
Great content as always.
Supra, a new Z, I wonder if Honda will bring back the Prelude. They might have to call it the Epilogue.
"It's a sports car, and we need more of those" Comment of the month! Yes, we need more fun cars with manual transmissions. Great review of a great new sports car. Bravo Nissan!
Good review! Although the S-Mode button is not "Sport Mode", it is the "Syncro Rev Match" mode feature that you mentioned right before. It rev matches for you when you downshift.
Good info
Absolutely correct. Excellent point!
Funny how in the manual its labeled s mode for NONE sport mode and in the automatic its labeled D-mode for "sport" mode 🤷🏽♂️
@humble harambe because i dont show my wealth by buying Maserati's or Bugati's or over priced Super cars ...
My wealth is my financial freedom. I have millions in the bank and i DON'T WORK .... I live off the interest of that $$. YEA ITS A GREAT LIFE 😉 and its not my problem if you dont believe it, frankly i dont give a shit what your opinion is of me ...
I AM THAT ASSHOLE THAT MOST OF YOU CAN ONLY DREAM OF BEING ... THAT RICH GUY THAT DOES NOT WORK AND LIVES OFF THE INTEREST AND HAS ENOUGH $$$ TO LAST 50+ YRS ...
I vacation when i want, fly across the world at a moments notice BECAUSE I CAN ...
Yes i own mostly Nissan because thats what i got into at a younger age. If you don't like Nissan THATS YOUR ISSUE not mine.
And you dont have my $$ and its not your $$ to critisize it. Call me what you want, its your choice but at the end of the day ... i have lots of $$ and you don't 🤷🏽♂️ and i spend it on whatever the fuck i want to spend it on ...
Believe what you want ....
Another great review. My wife and I LOVE this car! It is on our shortlist for fun, high-performance, RWD cars with manuals. The other 3 cars on the list are the Toyota Supra in a manual and the Ford Ecoboost Mustang with the High-Performance Package and Handling Package also with a manual and the GR Corolla because that car is too amazing. Combustion-powered cars may be coming to an end but what we are getting now are dream-worthy and I am going to try to get what I can before it's too late. Again, great job.
Tom, Thanks for the words of driving wisdom at 5:52 - You are the lane keep system! Just for the record, we Canadians don't pronounce the letter Z differently, we pronounce it properly.
Properly? Hmmmm...
Touché! :) Your witty comment made me chuckle. I'm told by my colleagues there that "zed" is the pronunciation in the UK too. And since they invented the language, their opinion is certainly worth considering.
@@DrivenCarReviews ;-)
Lol because pronunciation it's what's important, forget the amazing sports car
@@RotaryPoweredRX In Canada we call them sports cars. ;-)
I LOVE a snappy Tom Voelk review. This one does not disappoint.
Smooth ‘n excellent content, as usual, Tom. Thank you!
I had the chance to grab a nice one 10 years ago on the cheap and I had to pass. It still stings.
Great stuff from Tom, How good is he, Well I'm in Wales in he UK, and I always watch his presentations, despite havng zero chances of seeing, never mind owning pretty much anything he drives.
So the Canadians know how to pronounce the cars name properly, Well done Canada, I wonder if they do the same for aluminium and Jaguar etc as well? :)
Zed for New Zealand, Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland as well. I think it is only USA that says zee.
Than you for your review!! I love your eloquent writing/presentation as always
Liked it and played for the second time with the ad block turned off ^^;;
I’m glad they upped the cabin tech. I absolutely love the 370z, but the tech was embarrassing for a halo car. I realize that the point of sports cars is the drive, not necessarily the gadgets, but I’ve always thought that sports cars should make you feel like you’re in a fighter jet cockpit, much like the new ‘Vette does. Nissan at the very least could’ve added CarPlay and Android auto with an updated stereo to the 370z at some point considering the car hadn’t really changed since it came out in 2009.
Just seeing your name is enough to click on the video - I love the Z - Great work thanks
Excellent review! (As always!) Love the new 400Z!
Can't wait to see what it'll do with bolt ons and tune
3:43 That’s the button to turn on/off SynchroRev Match. There is no “sport mode” in a manual Z.
Very tempted to trade in my 07 350Z for this!
The performance difference will be huge!!
So far, most initial impressions are positive Kudos, Nissan!
Your review template fits this Z like a Z fits its driver! Hand in glove! (Should you have mentioned that the radio-stereo has a volume knob? I much agree with you----beats touch screen sliders!) Thank you!
Very tempted to buy. Just sold one of my cars. My S30 is pacific blue, very similar to the blue on the new Z. Would be nice having the OG Z and the new Z in the same driveway.
So much more power than a GR86 but 3500lbs is a lot heavier than the Toybaru, but grateful that Nissan keeps the Z going. Interesting to see what Nismo 400Z looks like. Wish Nissan had developed the Nismo IDX.
A VERY appealing offering. Nissan should offer an R-Spec-like trim for this car with all the go-fast goodies you need (namely an LSD) an none that you don’t. Still, I can’t see how anyone would choose a Supra over this. Well done, Nissan!
finally a review that is not 40 mins long
I don't like wasting peoples time.
Performance model $50k..still,a,good deal vs. the competition..great review..thanks
Beautiful. I seriously want a Z
According to Car and Driver’s tests, the 2021 Supra did 388 hp at wheels, and they said “Remove the driveline losses, and the engine appears to be capable of 400 horsepower at the crank”. So yeah… the Supra makes more power than advertised, and I think it makes more hp than the Z at the wheels.
I hope Nissan changes its mind and brings the Z to European markets!
Good shots of this thing moving in the desert. I'm having bad thoughts, of moving narcotics through Vegas with this thing!
I started watching wondering if the "Zed" (sorry, I'm in Canada 🇨🇦) was one of the secrets you mentioned on your videio when you went to Nissan's headquarters. Glad you cleaned that out at the end. Great video as always. Thanks!
You didn't need to say a word during this video, Tom. Just the look on your face while driving said it all. This car should sell as fast as they can manage to bring them to us. No one is going to get one for only $41,000. I'd say $55,000 to $60,000 minimum.
Every stock turbo car i have you cannot hear the turbo's until you put on a high flow intake filter, THEN you can hear the turbo spool ...
I live in Houston and called various dealers about getting one. The cheapest ADM (additional dealer mark-up) I could find was an extra $2200 and up dealers planned on additionally charging for the car. Wonder if Nissan knows about this....I just can't bring myself to pay an additional $2200 for window tint, fabric & paint protection. I'll just keep driving my 2022 BRZ.....
Thanks, Stompin’ Tom!
A shoutout to your editor 😎
nice reveiw and road
Love it. I think Nissan did a great job here overall.
Excellent review!
Oh and I’m Canadian. We don’t all pronounce it Zed. But that it the proper pronunciation. We do speak English just like Americans and the English pronounce it Zed……since they said it that way before Canada or the USA ever existed……it’s right. I agree it’s funny
I wish these productions were longer(that’s what she said).
I like to show people a good time and leave. That's what he said.
Yes, it's a Zed in Australia too..
Awesomeness! Great review. 15 year old 911 pr this?? Warranty... humm?
this will be my next car!
Fun! Great review as always!
I give 10/10 for looks and for a 4 sec car starting at $40k, it’s a no-brainer.
i want one but with a big white z on the bonnet and doors, to match my uaz
Thanks Tom! Great to see Nissan still supporting a manual. Hello BMW?
Only when it becomes electric
Back in the day, i almost bought a used 240. but was too $$$ so I bought a Camaro bored out to 400 V8.
Zead. Love your work.
Please bring it to Europe damnit!
Who said it isn't going to Europe?
I wonder why the MPG is so low compared to the B58-competition yet the reporting of 0-60 is slower too?
They've been taking their sweet time and now at these crazy fuel prices.. Best timing to launch a sports car! 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm afraid they truly do need a new CEO
I’m waiting on Jaguar, Mazda, and Nissan to release the F-Type, Miata, and Z in an electric version ⚡️The first to do it will get my ca$h
Nice! Thank you Tom.
A turbo 4 cylinder sounds interesting, with AWD it wold be even better.
Was there anything else in Japan that you saw that hasn't been revealed yet?
I think this will sell well initially but will then quickly fall off as this is a decent effort by Nissan, but not a game changer by any means.
But what sports cars *are* game changers? If the current Challenger can still sell as strongly as it did when it first released in 2008, something tells me that there isn't much game to change.
Awesome car! I definitely want one… 😉
Hi sorry does this mean the 370z will get cheaper or more expensive ? Aside from these super inflated prices lately …
Had to get a mention of the Seat back pockets in 😂
I love my brother. He'd be asking.
Unfortunately, no V6 aspirated option is available
Nice car & video. One question: 9:58 is “colorway” (in Red Lights) a real word used by automotive journalists these days? I don’t think I’ve EVER heard that one!
"Colorway" has been used for a long time though might be more insider's terminology. It's definitely a fashion term that's been used forever.
Far better than its predecessor, but the design leaves me cold. 7/10ths of what it could have been. And 41k? The original was a bargain-basement sports coupe that ran with the big boys (back then), but at 50k, I think a lot of enthusiast would rather invest in a slightly used Porsche. If you want a more reliable and modern drive, this would be a good second car, but the styling just doesn't do it for me. I will say it succeeds in being closer to its heritage than the previous generation and that is a good thing. Overall, I'm glad the 'Z' is back.
Apparently it’s not coming to the UK. A shame.
How does this car drive compared to a Mustang GT w/ Performance Package? On paper, the Mustang looks like a way better deal. You can get it pretty much loaded (GT Premium) with the PP for the mid $40's. Plus you get that incredible NA Coyote V8 engine. Camaro SS also pretty compelling.
The Performance Package Mustang I drove years ago seemed a little less locked down on everyday pavement that the standard GT. The Z feels very secure and planted during highway driving. The Mustang and Camaro have somewhat usable back seats so that's a plus. I really love the way the Camaro drives, I just can't see out of it.
But if you're a true sports car lover, an LSD is a must. And it's behind an additional $10,000 paywall....
Great review, as always. Which Nikes at 3:36?
Odyssey React
Thanks. Just got React Miler 2 Sheilds, and very happy with them... btw, 'love your work.
The best part is it sounds like none of that played out annoying pops&crackles. Just a good sounding exhaust.
I’d take this Z over the Supra. Would I take it over a gen one Z in great condition? Very different cars. What about you Tom?
We waited 14 years Tom...and this is the result? Let's hope Nissan moves faster with updates and tweaks on this new Z and has a new Z^ in 8 years or less...I think Subaru/Toyota did a better execution on the brz/86 gen 2 car and kept the price in check
🤦🏽♂️
I want one.
I'll take it
Twin turbo and premium fuel ? In this economy .. I’m good !
Are you sure it has wireless charging (not a big deal for me at all)- some other reviewers say it has wireless CarPlay but not wireless charging
$40k for a base Z and $50k for a performance Z? MSRP for a 370z with the Sport Package and 7 speed auto, paddle shifters, limited slip, traction control, synchro match down shifting, piston caliper brakes and 19 Rays wheels was $38k. $50k used to buy the top of the line Nismo 370z and then some. For $50k I'd rather have a Scat Pack. The new Z price point and option packages are too high and don't cut it for me. Yeah, no thanks. 370z all the way. Have fun. ;)
I'm in love.
The 300ZX was indeed the best looking Z.....👍
S-Mode only turns on Rev matching
Speer lol thats a Samurai sword blade lol!
I have to have one
A winner for sure. Let's hope there's no price gouging!
Will carbon buildup on the intake valves be a problem due to Direct Injection?
Probably not if it's driven as intended. Hard driving should burn of excess carbon preventing any build up in the engine.
Nissan should have made the hard top a removable Targa top. They missed the boat...again.
Eww no. Looks like ass with targa. I suppose you would want the car in wine red too?
In light of the fact that Putin's forces paint a big Z on their tanks to show their personal support of Putin's war in Ukraine, Nissan might want to reconsider putting a big Z on their newest sports car.
Maybe Z300turbo would be a better choice, just a thought ...
Nope just a single Z is great. And if you think Russia is at fault, go do some real research
Very cool car. Probably the best since the mid 90s 300zx. Too bad it’s a dinosaur. They need to find a way to put electric motor in or plug in hybrid.
Supra manual is coming, id wait
Only to the 6, not the 4 (at least for now).
be careful, Nissan, with that new name in European market
It’s not coming to Europe anyway.
It doesn't have wireless charging.
@6:52 4-cylinder Supra???
Yup.
Needs a better Exhaust First this am doing to mine
I am sure that is everyone's 1st swap out
Who's Zed?
Zed's dead baby.
How many Zs will Nissan produce?
That's really hard to determine these days with the shortages and all. Let's see if there's some demand first.
I think there will be demand. People are nostalgic.
@@viper9857 I am. Last owned a Z in 1992. I think there will be demand from old geezers like me, and people who like retro styling.
Wonder how many will actually buy this car in this day and age of electrification .
good car!
Possible EV version?
I don't think so
I was going to buy this car but after hearing its another 10 grand for a limited slip diff ............. Hell F`n NOOOOO!
Oh no, for me the classic one named Datsun looked so much better!
They need a Z high performance SUV
Yeah that's all we need more fat overweight ugly SUVs
So Tom... GR86 or base model Z ????
As always, personal preference. Mine would be the Z. Manual please.
@@DrivenCarReviews What about the Z makes you want to spend $10k more? Extra power? Build quality? Better handling???
@@bikebudha01 It feels more powerful and mature. Feels like there's a little more room (though numbers may contradict that, didn't check) and the hatch design makes the Nissan easier to load up. I also like the Z design much more, would prefer walking up to it than the Toyota.
@@DrivenCarReviews thx!!
Not everywhere, won’t be released in Europe
I hope it comes with a heated steering wheel.
Good effort by Nissan. Unfortunately, I think these will easily be over $ 75,000 by the time it hits the streets.
I can see the Proto Spec commanding that but wait for a while and I think prices will be reasonable.
@@DrivenCarReviews True. The market is out of balance. Though, I think I'd prefer the manual supra.
@@weirdshibainu It's more expensive and its dual BMW/Toyota vibe is a little odd. And the Zs design is more elegant. Supra is nice but... Ultimately, I'm waiting for the Cayman EV to blow all my money on. Must. Start. Saving.
Hopefully this takes the people with money to blow all to the Z side and leaves more sweet GR86/BRZs for the mortals. 400hp is sweet and all, but lets be honest, no one actually needs it and only a few track their cars. GR86/BRZ is all anyone ever needs to have a blast in real life.
@@deniscdyck The pragmatic Minnesotan in me agrees with much of what you say, but the Z does feel more grown up and substantial, even if it's not on the track. And that's worth something.
Iike you, I too love the z32 .
Beautiful car.
@@DrivenCarReviews As good as the 400z is , it doesn't compare to the impact the ground breaking z32 had at its introduction in 1990. It was miles better than anything else , bar the exotics. Great review too!
@@sunilayya8948 Agreed. But in an era where sports cars are an endangered species, this is nice to see.
@@DrivenCarReviews ofcourse. Kudos to nissan for doing such a great job and offering it at a value price, despite their financial issues. They deserve to make a strong comeback since their new range is very competitive. Hope they can restore their pre 2000 reputation for reliability.
i read somewhere the auto is mercerdes sourced. is this true?
There is a rumor
Yep..read that also
Alex ("Alex on Autos") mentioned this during his (and Brian's) review. I think he said the 9-speed auto was a Mercedes design manufactured at a Jacto facility.
$41k ---> $55k+ after markup...
Too expensive...... I think I will just buy the Z370
