    I've owned 4 Z-cars, including a 2015 370z Sport 6MT. My only complaints about that car were 1) Lack of telescoping steering wheel and 2) Crappy stock seats. It looks like the "new" Z addresses those concerns, plus adds power and technology.
    Here are my issues with this car:
    This is a parts bin car. It's clearly a tweaked 370z with an engine swap to a powerplant Nissan/Infiniti has already made for several years. That would be fine, except that in order to get one with an LSD and Akebono brakes (carried over from the 370z), you pay $50k+, and that's not even including inevitable dealer mark-ups. For comparison- Less than 3 years ago, you could buy a brand new 370z Sport (LSD, Akebono brakes, 19 inch Rays wheels) for under $35k. Nissan has essentially raised the price of the equivalent "new" Z by $15k+ over the 370z, without building a new chassis. That's not good for consumers. They've priced this to compete with the Supra, disregarding the incredible value proposition this car could have been.
    If we look at the base model, it's still $40k+. That might not seem bad, but it's still $10k more than what you could buy a base 370z for less than 3 years ago. It's also more than you can currently pay for a base Mustang GT or Camaro LT1. Even in the current inflated market, those cars are selling for under $40k in many parts of the country. You could buy a brand new 7th Gen Corvette for under $55k 2 or 3 years ago. As much as a love the Z, that's a better sports car. Even now there are used, low-mileage C7s out there for well under $50k.
    I think this Z34.5 would be a home run if the base model started at $35k, and the performance trim topped out at $42-43k. I just don't think we're getting enough "new" sports car for the price.

    • @r6mt09
      @r6mt09 2 года назад +2

      I agree. I rather buy the 86. It’s hard to justify 10k to jump on to the Base Z. The Z is really fighting against two Toyotas the 86 and the Supra. And the base z looses out to the 86 and performance z looses to the Supra manual

    • @Chilicharger665
      @Chilicharger665 2 года назад +4

      I completely agree. They should have started at 35k with a 300hp version to go with the 245 width tires and no LSD. Then a 10k jump in price would be legit for 100 more hp, better wheels/tires, LSD, etc.

    • @DrHistoryV
      @DrHistoryV 2 года назад

      I partially agree, yes I feel the price for a parts bin car is on the high side considering they just used left over parts and chasis. But if you think about it if you twin turbo a 370z sport (35k price like you mention), a properly tuned TT kit w/ supporting mods will put you right there with a 50k MSRP of this one, so basically you are just paying for a factory TT. They should have made one with an NA VQ37 and left it like you said.

    50K is a tough sale. Sure the Supra is a “BMW” but for the money you pay it’s actually worth it for the interior you get, the transmission is better and the engine definitely puts out more horsepower than advertised. The only option for the Z that makes sense is the base model. That interior in the Z has some super cheap looking stuff and you can tell where it shares 370Z parts with. The performance upgrades over the sport is not worth 10k. But I do want an LSD just not for fucking 10k. Sad day indeed. I will no longer be buying this car. They not only let Toyota catch up with a manual supra, but after 2 years of waiting and scoping out the car, they hit me with 50k -_-. Nissan had it and very likely blew it for themselves. I mean the Z is looking to be every bit as capable as the Supra and thus pretty close to the C7 Corvette.... The Supra's Manual is also rumored to cost 2-3K as an option, so I think most would be hard pressed to say the Supra with a stick is worth another 6-8K over the Z. This is also just the initial release of Z's, more options and packages are likely to come over the next few months that fill in the gap between base and top trims.
      But with that said the used car argument really has never really work especially with how used cars are priced right now, Its just not an apples to apples comparison as there are far too many variables and unknowns to take into consideration when buying used.

    When they first teased it, I hoped it would be a clean slate design. Exterior styling is nice and there are some updates over the 370... but not enough to really justify the price. A used 370 might look old but it's going to be a bargain compared to this. At full new price, I think there's just too many other new designs that offer more performance and arguably more modern and higher quality interiors.

    I'm happy you told the truth about the car. I've always been a Z fan, but have lost a lot of faith in Nissan. The new Z will be a hit with the Z community but it's lacking a lot for a modern sports car.
    I think as you mentioned, the Supra will be the better car dynamicly. It's a shame the don't offer any type of adjustable suspension ( electronic dampers /magnetic ride ) at all for the Z. That's honestly a deal breaker for me. And I'm assuming the Z doesn't have adjustable steering as well or any type of "track mode"? Just a display change ?
    I'm glad they are making an accessable sports car at a decent price point - but for the money, I think I'll just stick with a 1le Camaro or entertain a Supra manual when they are released.
    There's too much of the 370z and 350z in the "new Z". It's like Nissan went shopping in the parts bin and fitted everything to a 20 year old 350z FM chassis.

    Yeah… they did totally drop the ball on pricing. This could have been a fantastic sell if it started at $30 or $35k base, $40k for the higher end trims. There is just no scenario in which someone in that market does not end up buying something else. What are they going for here? What’s the sell supposed to be?

      @@Elchurrodurro I guess. I don’t know if consumers are cross-shopping the Z and the BRZ, but I’m sure some are and that’s was probably part of what determined the price point of the Z. I think it is near-unanimous, Nissan blew it on the pricing. The original Z was an unheard of performance bargain back in it's day. This car had the potential to be the legendary performance bargain of our era. As it is priced/configured now, it will only appeal to those with particular use cases: Nissan nostalgia nerds, styling preference, more relaxed gt feel/visibility over Supra, etc.
    I think Nissan bought into the hype but the hype was for 400hp on the cheap, and 50k ain't cheap. Hopefully Toyota doesn't make the same mistake with the GR Corolla, which at the end of the day is still a Corolla.

    Excellent review with more than just the superficial - actually thinking and comparing to the competition. The one thing I want to know is whether you can actually feel the double wishbone front suspension hardware giving you an advantage in corners. In the GR86 there is a little stickiness in the front suspension on bumpy corners from those struts that cause the front to skip a little. Being that the Z weighs 700+ lbs more, possibly the feel of the double wishbone is not there as much as it could be. I would think this would also be an advantage over the Supra, but it didn't seem like you noticed a difference. I realize strut can be pretty good if it's well designed and built.

    It really looks like a great car, but I don't think I'd rather have it than my Supra. I'd buy the performance version of this b/c I'd hate myself not getting all the goodies, so the price would be similar, and similar performance in the real world it seems, which kinda makes it a toss up in terms of how it is to live with and aesthetics. In the aesthetics dept while I like the elements in this of the 240Z, the 370Z, and the 300ZX, it also feels like a bit of an identity crisis. Like the car doesn't have an identity of its own, it's just taking key elements of all parents past. So I'm not quite sold on the aesthetics. And in terms of living with this compared to the supra, this is probably a bit more livable it seems (softer suspension, more visibility, etc.), but those aren't things that bother me about the supra so I'm not really feeling the regret. I kinda like that laser-like German precision of the Supra and the suspension isn't really firm enough to bother me. It's worlds better than my 987 in terms of suspension compliance in the real world driving.

This car was only on my radar and most others of it was a bargain. It still is in this economy but not as much to justify all of its shortcomings. I don’t see $10k worth of upgrades to go from sport to performance. I’d rather take the $10k saved and put in coil overs, lsd, recaro seats, big brakes, and maybe an exhaust. I imagine most will be doing the same, especially in a few years once deprivation finally kicks back in and you can get one used for $30k.
