    Copart is trash. I was at their Phoenix location a year ago to pick up a salvage title F30 328i, and there was some 18-year-old kid who had flown halfway across the country to pick up a crashed WRX STI, he arrived at the copart location at 8:00 a.m., did all the paperwork and got the title by 10am, and his STI was delivered to him *AT 7:00 p.m.*! Everyone at Copart knew he was waiting for his car, and they did everything within their power to ensure that he had to wait an unreasonable amount of time to receive it. He politely inquired multiple times about when his car would be unloaded. All the staff blew him off and told him to wait and that it would be out soon. Seems like the staff was colluding with the auto transporters and tow truck drivers, and made it so that if you did not pay an auto transporter to pick up your car from Copart for you, then you would be last in line, no matter what time you arrived to pick up your vehicle. They made me wait an unreasonable amount of time as well, but luckily I showed up in the afternoon, so I was inconvenienced a bit less than the WRX STI kid was. Also, the lady who helped me with the title and the paperwork inside the Phoenix location was absolutely terrible. Almost refused to give me the title to my own car that I had already paid for. From what I've heard, all Copart locations are like this. They hire bottom of the barrel employees, nobody is happy to work there, and nobody takes any pride in their job.

    Copart did that damage with their long fork loaders.
    I picked up cars from IAA and Copart for about 12 years and transported them to salvage yards. It was very common for the operators at the auction to wildly pick up and drop the cars.
    Notice how the damage doesn’t have any rust? It’s fresh.
    Wacking oil pans was almost a weekly occurrence. It doesn’t matter unless it’s one of their “premium” sale cars, they are moving the cars around all the time with reckless abandon.
    The yards I delivered to used the shorter forks and we would pick up from the sides of the car but with caution

Inspect it carefully every year, and repair hoses when they show signs of deterioration to keep the DOOM away. Then 24 coil packs and spark plugs to deal with... We have Copart here in the UK too (assuming it is the same organisation). They are indecently red-hot quick to collect insurance write-offs. My wife drove into the back of another car at 15mph during a coughing fit. They wrote her car off but I negotiated with the engineer on the phone and bought it back, and fixed it for no money. However, four days before he phoned but after I'd received an email from Copart telling me it was being written off, a driver from Copart called me on my cellphone & said he was en route to collect the car and would arrive in 35 minutes! I told him I would be buying the car back but he got pretty precious about it so I clarified the position by shortening the words & hung up. It felt like the vultures were dropping out the sky to start picking.

The other thing is, you checked the lower bearing half, which is the unloaded side, the upper ones always have more wear or damage. My opinion is that, the guys at the auction thought they could get out more money from the car if they are listing it as run & drive and they didnt care about the potential engine damage.

In both cases, the engines did finally start making horrendous noises, indicating to the new owners that the oil pressure was not actually fine. Just trying to say that having oil is very important but a few seconds run without isn't always a death sentence. Hope yours turns out to be fine.

  • @Rick2010100
    @Rick2010100 Месяц назад +7

    My Mercedes workshop once told me: The engine normally does not suffer any damage if it is started briefly without oil. However, the turbocharger should not run without oil; it will then be damaged immediately. The turbocharger rotates at over 80,000 revolutions and kicks in at 1,500 engine revolutions. Because of the high speed, the turbocharger spindle is not ball-bearing-mounted, but rotates in an special oil film that is generated under pressure. Without this oil film, the turbo spindle hits its shaft. If the engine no longer has any power above 3,000 revolutions, the turbo (one or both) is destroyed. This is also why regular oil changes are extremely important for turbo engines. Bad oil damages the turbo first, and the Mercedes specifications for engine oil should also be strictly adhered to.

They always seem to respect the truckers time. Check in, pick a ramp, they roll, push or drag the equipment on and you are loaded. When I pulled RGN trailers, I often loaded myself but they were always awesome about jumping batteries, they have on site mechanics that will try to get dead equipment running or they will work to get it loaded with the truck driver. I have hauled wrecked cars from insurance lots to LKQ, and they are always good at unloading quickly but it's always on a flatbed.

Unfortunately, I can't find anyone the Philly area top wrench on it. They'll ask to BUY it but refuse to work on it. Good look with the channel and enjoy the car! I'll be watching!!

    Copart are the same in the UK, I bought a damaged horse trailer, I only wanted the chassis, after driving 5 hours to fetch it and you have to pay before even seeing it, they'd lifted it from the tow hitch end with a forklift under the body and had bent the chassis like a banana, they wouldn't refund my money, only credit, it was over 6 months before something I wanted came up!

    Great content and a wonderful project. I was very surprised that when the rob cap was removed at 4:47 and then upon reinstallation at 5:47 you commented that you weren't sure which way the rod cap goes back on. From the rough parting line that appears to be a fractured cap connecting rod. They're stronger than rods with machined big-ends, because the fractures are supposed to be lined back up. Since the orientation had a 50/50 chance you may have gotten lucky, but I'd think checking the parting-line contact with Prussian Blue would have been a good idea, so that you'd be 100% sure of the cap going back on in the correct orientation.
    Looking forward to more of your great content.

    No secret that Copart is shady as hell and generally dgaf about any of the cars they sell. One of the biggest annoyances is that they fork all of their vehicles(even if they’re run and drive) often times causing damage to the undercarriage. And yes, their fees have gone up exorbitantly over the years.

  • @TryItAgainTomorrow
    @TryItAgainTomorrow Месяц назад +3

    As someone who recently bought my first salvage car from CoPart, it was definitely not a great experience. While I'm lucky that this one was represented fairly accurate, the fees were as much as the vehicle in price. Add the lack of communication from the transport company and you've got a very bad experience. Definitely will be using 'the other guy' next time I do this.

It's a pitty that you had bad experience with COPART. Frankly speaking there should be a special notice on auction DO NOT START NO OIL IN THE ENGINE. Recently I had won a car on the auction, shipping inside the US from Orlando Copart yard to Savannah port took around 2-3 days, no regrets it went smoothly. It should also work the same way for local buyers, smooth and easy pick up from the yard. I fully understand that they could have some delays during "peak season" though in America "client is Kings". What's going on in America? Greetings from Poland.

    Very nice car ! I've got a 2007 CL600 with the same engine. I never had the kind of trouble you had. I bought my car with 45K miles on it, almost 10 years ago. The sound system was dead and had to be replaced and that was about it. But 10K miles later, both ignition coils gave up one month apart from each other. The asked price (by Mercedes) was just extravagant. I found the parts on ebay in China for a quarter of the price, installed them. They still work perfectly. Then 10K miles later the hydraulic system gave up. Mercedes diagnosed a failing pump. The cost to fix it again was too high to my taste. I got a second opinion and found out that it was just one hose, and not the pump, that was leaking. I had it replaced for a few dollars. The car has been running fine since. The acceleration is incredible, the comfort excellent and the exhaust noise, a symphony to my ears.

    At a Copart location not too far from where you got your S600, I had a similarly bad experience. Copart had ran my car (personal car got into an accident) out of gas and refused to help me with that (they specifically had stated my car ran and drove so I was surprised to have it not start). On top of that, they lost my license plate. When I called to inquire about where my plate was, they made me wait 40 minutes on hold just to tell me that they didn't have it. Additionally, I found a Nissan Key in my cup holder; I've never owned a Nissan product. Unsurprisingly, they also damaged the underside of my vehicle slightly. Manager never got back to me.

Bought 6 cars through them, 2 of which I picked up myself and was in and out within 30 minutes. Also, depending on the location, office staff is ok. Every single car that I or someone I knew bought off Copart had hidden issues or had incorrect information. Anyways, keep up the great work!

Its all part of their game don't think its not on purpose or just "poor management". Copart is bottom of the barrel. Any other auction yard/company is better.
