Yes, my Mercedes does just "come right apart", if you have the right Mercedes custom tool, they can't have the dealership mechanic take too long to fix your car. As I saw you hammering with your brass rod and hammer all I could think was "That's another special jig you should get" to go with you fleet of Mercedes S-Class cars.

I have had 3 Lexuses LS 400, LS430, LS460L with virtually no repairs and a car that is atleast 5 times better in every way than the S- Class Benz.
ps I have never taken any Mercedes or Lexus to the Stealership as they are both thieves that work on these cars.

Benz tech here. For those axles you can actually use the axle bolt to press off the cv joint. It’s hollow all the way through so the bolt goes in and presses the end off saves you from hammering away with a brass punch. that way you can do it on the car if it’s just the outer boot that’s torn 😁

I cannot believe how interesting these videos are, despite being completely irrelevant to me in practical reality. Yet I'm totally fascinated. I love these videos, Waldo, please keep doing what you're doing.
MB tech here aswell. Couple of pointers concerning the transmissionoil change. The bolts for the pan are aluminium for a reason, the older cars had steel bolts and they used to corrode inside the aluminium fastners which made them very difficult to get off. Secondly, usually you wont get any oil out of the converter by just removing the drainplug, theres a special tool for draining it which is a long steel tube which will let the air out, you can also blow in it with compressed air to drain it faster.
Also about the sparkplugs, please oh please use sparkplug grease on the boots, they become almost impossible to get off if you dont.

Wow, very well done. I had a 2013 S550 that I took really good care of. Ran well and I was doing most of the services, similar to what you just did, in my garage. Car ran exceptionally until about 140,000 when a red light runner totaled my car. I truly believe that the 2013 W221 was one of the better built S classes second only to the W140. I ended up buying a 2018 S560 which honestly speaking was a piece of crap that stayed breaking down and it made me hate the W222 models. Now I drive a 2020 S560 that has had it's share of problems but I really do miss my 2013 S550

@@dnzgarageWhere can I start? The car has been a complete disaster. I've even tried to get Mercedes to buy it back but they've refused to do so.
#1, cylinder misfires were a constant problem. Dealer just couldn't seem to find the root cause of this. All coils have been replaced, spark plugs replaced but problem persist.
#2, high pressure fuel line problem. Initially they said bad gas but not true. Gas tested every time and it broke down. Kept getting that car running too rich error code. Eventually the entire fuel system was replaced, from the hoses to the pumps, to the rails.
#3, turbo failure. For unknown reasons my turbos failed. Initially it was running hot and they thought it was the thermostat. However, it turned out to be the turbos, and I don't know how it's related.
#4, drive shaft completely broke. The thing snapped and came apart. Even the dealer said he's never seen that happen. Keep in mind, every breakdown takes 30-60 days to repair. All those have been functional failures rendering the car unusable. Then there's the cosmetic issues. The ivory leather seats have stained and worn beyond what 48,000 mile car would suggest. Then those stupid run flat tires are so stiff that a good pothole strike is almost guaranteed to crack the rim. These cost $1300 rims each to replace. I know. Done it more times than I need. Switching to Continental DWS non run flats have lasted more than a year compared to 3 months or less of constant bulging and tire failures. I can keep going. Don't let me start on my dreaded Red transmission failures that constantly pop up on the dash and you have to pull over, turn off engine, wait a few mins before restarting the car. I lost my faith with Mercedes. I wish I had better things to say but I don't.

I did 5 years ago salvage inspection in New York. First thing down load salvage request from dmv.Then fill up form and send payment. After that you will get date of inspection. When you transport your vehicle to inspection make sure that is on the registered trailer. If you drive your car with out trailer it is automatically denied. So make sure that is on the trailer upon arrival Whatever parts are replaced make sure that you have vin number from where part came from and receipt. This is mostly applied for doors hood and engine but in your case nothing just in case bring vin number and purchase proof from Mercedes where suspension module came from. They will instruct you to bring vehicle inside garage to open all doors hood an trunk to place receipts on passenger seat and to leave in waiting room. After 30 minutes approximately they will call you to pick up car. You will receive confirmation that you pass and NYS title will be mailed to your address. With salvage rebuild title you can then register your car in your state. Reason why they want you to register car from state that is purchase is because title will state “rebuild salvage “so all other titles will do the same forever. It is just disclosure. I would still bring all receipts from repairs and parts. Good luck.
As long as its not a V12 or hydraulic suspension that is really crammed in there all S classes are really a joy to work on compared to other cars. One of the reasons why Mercedes is the only cars ive had in my life.

For the night view assist. You also need different headlights as there is IR in the headlight to help with Night View Assist
I believe those headlight also have less visible light output, so whilst you get the novelty of nightvision, you get less visibility generally.

So often you find the only problems these high end cars gave you is that nobody serviced them. So owners probably sold them simply because they DIDN'T look after basic maintenance, that's crazy.

What a peach!! Lucky find there Waldo. Properly engineered! Night view is ace. Had it on my old E63. It really works well. Basically the rear seat blinds, heaters everything sounds just like my old AMG. I worked at Merc AMG HPP then so it was an ex-MBUK press car.

About a month ago I lost my ‘08 S550 to careless fellow running a stop sign while talking on a cellphone. T-boned passenger side. All the safety equipment worked. It was a best car I had for 5 years.

Tip! Next time if you wanna move outside part of cv axle use wheel hub locking bolt and use impact to screw it in until the outer part pops out. Hold it straight and avoid do it on angle or something. Hammering will destroy it like shown on video. Hope that helps. You can test that method on old cv axle.

@13:10 - Bosch makes fuel system & exhaust parts for all major European car makes: fuel injectors, spark plugs, coil packs, fuel injectors, O2 sensors, etc. You can save quite a bit of $ by using the OE supplier to BMW, VW Auto Group (VW, Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini) and Mercedes rather than getting the parts from the dealer parts counter. AKA, Bosch. Bosch coil ignition coils are 1/2 or 1/3 the cost of the dealer parts counter and are the same part.
Those plugs needed to be torqued to speck and like some degree of a turn afterwards in order for the spark to face the right way.
Look up Mercedes specks on that motor before something breaks. Good luck

Love the content! One thing my dad said about, is using a brass hammer or punch to remove a bearing can leave brass chips in the bearing since they are just so hard.
Nice to see a w221 on the channel. I'm about to do a spark plug change on a M157 which is very much related to the M278. I read that spark plug indexing is critical on these engines, and there is a technical service bulletin from Mercedes on the topic. (OEM/Bosch plugs and 23 NM). A good tip is to mark the spark plug socket to verify the angle of the electrode.

Came here to say this. If you torque OEM plugs to the proper 23NM then they should be indexed properly (no anti-sieze, just dry)
"should"... Mark the plug socket tool to be 100% sure. There are forum posts about 23NM dry without anti seize that gives different results on the OEM plugs.

Bought a w221 S500L last year. Fully loaded, with designo package leather in mystic red (only one i saw in 2 years), massage, heat, cooled and recline seats in the back, sunshades and probably every single option you could tick back then. From very wealthy business owner and a M-B brand fan who swapped it for a new AMG-GT.
Such a nice car, rides soooo good. They just dont make cars like this anymore. Yet even a good W221 example cost almost nothing to buy.

Great job. Regarding CV dismanteling, you must put CV on max. angle between axles, then remove one spheric ball with a little hammer and chisel, than remove the oposite spheric ball and so on. Success. You need only rubber gasket and circular 2 metallic clips.

I like that you used a brass punch to separate that CV from the shaft. I actually cut down a punch, drilled a hole in it on the end and put my air chisel with the point adapter inside the hole of the brass punch and use the air chisel to separate the two, that way you can also hold the splined end straight while shocking it off.

Im interested to see how it goes. Im from NY thats how I knew about the MV907. So i Know like NJ and PA dont take it. But like Florida and Mass. does and will convert it to a salvage title. Worse case you may have to get really creative with how you register it, and maybe the MV-907 and the bill of sale could satisfy your state to get a title, either way im looking forward to the next one.
Very nice video and together with the MB tech comments are worth their weight in gold. Remind people to make sure they do NOT have an actual LSD rear end. A different oil is required. It is an option that I like better than the MB system. I picked up a 2012 Bluetech 350 and love it. Wish it had more rear seat options but it is great anyway. It won't hold a candle to your 550 in power, but it is surprisingly good on power. I would put it against an E350 gas any day . I won't talk about the fuel mileage mine gets 'cause it will depress you to no end. Let's just say it is a 5000# economy car and a very nice place to be. Great info in your vids and nicely done!
Just a quick tip, Mercedes advertises that the Automatic Gearbox Oil is for life, but internally they say every 40,000 miles or 60,000 Kilometres, If you ever get a slipping clutch just flush out the gearbox a few times and put in new oil.
Years ago most owners got rid of their Mercedes after 200,000 miles.

They can be quite reasonably priced in Germany as people are too scared to buy them in case they break down, everybody said I´d go bankrupt but it was the cheapest car I´ve ever had in many ways.

I think they use aluminum bolts on the transmission pan to prevent stuck bolts. Iron and aluminum contract can cause galvanic corrosion, and those bolts address on the bottom of the car, exposed to a lot of water.
Waldo you don’t separate axle shaft on Mercedes like that. You need to push inside not outside and forward But there is tool that stretch boot over joint. Anyway great job

2008 s550. Bought at 100k. Rolling like butter at 220k. Just keep up the maintenance. They are extremely well built
You fill the front diff from the drain plug. Measure 600mL or whatever it is. Then pump and quickly place the drain plug back. Or add a bit over the amount to account for slight spillage. Way easier.

Check the main cabin vent inside the engine bay behind the battery. Stuff usually finds it's way in there that gets neglected and leads to interior flooding.
Check all of the water drain holes with a prob, and spray nozzle.

Pardon me if this has been answered but the CV joint should be "not tilted" to extreme but should be mostly straight when hammering them suckers off. So, have a chunk of aluminium or plastic under to hold it straight while hammering/whacking.

I had a ‘15 glk, probably the same front diff (had the same filling procedure) but I used the transmission fill tool, filled through the drain plug and measured out the fluid+100ml for fluid lost when swapping the tool for the drain plug. Much easier than pulling an axle (if you don’t have to like in my case)
The head of the shaft goes out realy easy if you hit it on the exterior lip, not where the spline is. I know it does make any sense but don't ask how I know. Nice video mate💪

Often CV shafts have an external clip on the CV on one end and an internal clip on the CV on the other. If you can get the external clip off and remove that CV joint you can put the axle shaft into a length of steel pipe and bash it hard on the floor. That should pop off the CV with the internal clip. I've tried hammers without success, but the 'pipe trick' has always worked for me. It's best to wrap the CV and the end of the pipe in a towel so that the CV joint doesn't go flying across your workshop.
I'm not too sure about that specific merc outer CV but on so manufacturers vehicles they put a circlip at the outer end of the inner part of the CV joint so you need to clean up all the grease around where the shaft goes into the CV and look out for a gap and the circlip has 2 prongs on it and not the 2 loops like normal circlips and you use the external circlip pliers to spread the circlip apart and just pull the outer CV joint off.

Instead of pounding the ring, put back the big screw that holds the bearing. It bottoms down at the half shaft. Keep tightening until the CV Joint pops out.
Your high skill and knowledge acknowledged. The effort required for a 100k mile (old) car to have been properly serviced now makes me wary of buying one sadly 😢
I bought a 1985 300d in 2002. I did quite a bit of wrenching on it over the four years I had it. I never had any trouble getting things apart.
Same with the 2001 e320 I bought in 2016.
So I guess it is a Mercedes thing. 😊😊
Buddy of mine worked at Mercedes for over 20 years, went to their factory in Germany and all that and he always said the S550 was one of the best. Solid built, reasonably powerful, very comfortable on the road and reliable. Of course, he now works at Lexus, and really sees reliable cars compared to the Mercs.
Can you swap the night veiw assist to the other car ?

Fellow NH rebuilder here. Nice car, love that s550. I just picked up a 2015 RDX for the wife from the smasher auction, and currently gathering all the parts needed to get it going. Both auction sites are not that great with pictures and videos.
I have always stayed away from mv907a cars from NY due to this fact that you have to go back to NY and get it inspected, and go to their DMV to get the title process done, and pay their fee's, more time and money wasted.
Waiting for part 3 to confirm your findings.
I called the NH DMV and the lady I spoke to said they would accept the MV-907A, but I won't feel confident about it until they *actually* accept it at the inspection 😬
@@WaldosWorld Good Luck and looking forward to your video. Just make sure you have all your paperwork in order, and the VIN from the other S550 and what you took out of it to get this one going. They hate missing/obscure info with no paperwork/documentation at the salvage inspection locations and will fail you on the spot.
If your m907a papers flies, that makes me feel better about buying NY salvage cars.

8:48 it’s better to put the wrench 180° so your pushing down on it instead of pulling. Much less chance of hurting yourself or your back. Plus your using gravity to help.

close to the firewall under the windshield wipers, there is a waterdrain, sometimes i clogges up with leaves, and maybe the water damage came from that, if you havent you should definitively check that, great channel great content
