  • Submitting Morgan Dollars for grading depends on how much you have in the coin, then what potential grade it might attain, and if the coin has a problem or not. I highlight these issues in this video. How to grade Morgan Silver Dollars.

I agree 100%, we shoud be able to scan these and put a grade on them. The current system is like MLB baseball, a ball or strike is totally dependent upon the umpire.

    • @silveraddict2489

      True statement there!

    • @mbrown5494
      @mbrown5494 4 года назад

But then, there will be arguments about the scanning software. With coins, the final "official" grade is subjective. (Baseball pitches are FAR easier to computer grade than a coin!)

I'm a collector not an investor. I have all 95 business strikes ranging from an 1893S ungraded VG8 to an 1885 graded MS67. I bought them as needed to complete my collection and bought them as is which is mostly ungraded. As a collector and not an investor I have no interest in sending them in for grading. I bought several pre Morgan silver dollars that were detail graded and not given a numerical grade but a detail grade such as "XF details". I was able to get some nice looking coins at a reduced price this way. Many of these early coins have been around a long time and many times cleaned 200 or more years ago.

What I've noticed just at looking at coins on the NGC sold auctions list . The more expensive coins are all near flawless at ms65, and the more common dates / mints tend to be a bit more liberal. And honestly I dont mind .... gives me hope for my change by keeping the premiums inflated. But it could be my eye . I do agree about the computer analysis though, great equalizer .

And all of the coins I have that are Graded none are less than MS 62 up to MS 66, can't afford the next tier lol. If they go to a computerized grading system, the TPG's would lose millions in their resubmission game. I agree that's how it should be, but they'll fight that guaranteed! Not sure if it is true, but I heard there was a system like that in the late 80's or 90's, but it didn't last long.

I wonder if they'll ever go to computer photo scanning for grading? There seems to be a vast difference between coin graders in these Professional Services. Thinking establish a scanning grade I think would be more accurate way grade coins. I see a lot of people resubmit coins and they come back a different grade because of human judgment which differs very much.

I only wanted 1 roll, and throughout the 20 purchases, there was a change as i learned about cleaned coins, and obvious crockery on Ebay. Recently took my roll in to a shop and i have about 5 that arent cleaned, Yikes! No key dates, got the better ones around $25 in mid-AU. It seems the shittier they look (on ebay) the better. I recently subscribed because I appreciate your knowledge and integrity of application. One thing I would like to see more of: to make a video (or series)...just on (likely) "details" grading for Morgans. Honestly, I'm a bit disgusted with the third party graders: I see graded Morgan after Morgans that are getting 62, 63, even 64...and they are dull and grey and ugly as (fill in the blank! They look every bit as likely as cleaned, as any other I've seen!) And then I'll see really quite attractive Morgans (that are also MS) but are beautiful, and often with nice luster, get "details cleaned" or "scratched"...or one I'd had recently: "obv. cleaned UNC". It was heart-breaking due to the rarity of the coin...and where (apparently) it was some tiny little hairline-patch. And yet reading the ANA's own manual on this, they allow for small hairline patches. And that tiny patch (could just as easily been caused by it rubbing against something in a dresser for years). It shouldn't be the way it is...and I don't know how to avoid these (seemingly constant) "details" grade.

@@CoinHELPu I appreciate your response. I believe I didn't ask the question properly. This coin isn't dull like a circulated coin. It has a strange toning like color to it. It's an 1880-O with a nice strike and super clean of any scratches or bag marks.

@@CoinHELPu I wasn't aware of a community. Obviously if I had been, I would've asked there instead. Answering questions is part of teaching people. Unless you're able to answer every possible question in each video.
Btw. I didn't realize the post about taking it to a shop had been posted. I wouldn't of posted an hour ago if I had. Good luck to you sir.

All circulated coins have been cleaned at some point, somehow. Non-issue.

But most didn’t have their original surfaces altered, a big difference in harsh cleaning.

@@CoinHELPu True, but having a hard time visualizing how a circulated coin would have much of an original surface left. So what is better, an uncleaned G coin with few details remaining or a VF coin that has been lightly polished without scratching further?

    • @CoinHELPu

A circulated coin would not, I was referring to uncirculated coins, but a circulated coin does develop a natural patina over time and that can be removed from harshly cleaning.

I still really like your site. Is it possible that YOU has a 1953 penny with zinc or steel and look at the site where the man gave his 1990's penny to the government. What's up with that ? SILVER HOUND says u got to believe.

Thanks. A lot of them have been plated but unless it's 1982 until now, plated in copper, or a 1943 plated in zinc, then it's been plated outside the mint. So it would be a damaged coin. I have several plated coins I keep for reference.

I like your videos, but I think it could be confusing that you say "don't clean coins"; then, you call a nice coin "very clean".

You can trust them but don't bank on getting the money grades you see in their price guides.
