So much help from one coin shop owner. Daniel you are a model of a numismatist instructor. Thank you for all you do.
I appreciate that!
After watching your video Daniel with your superb knowledge, I've come to the conclusion that I'm fairly sure that because of my inexperience I've purchased on Ebay a couple of cleaned coins not knowing they were cleaned.
I'll need to pull them out and inspect them again.
Truly appreciate your dedication to this profession/hobby.
Blessings,
Louis
This has happened to all of us. Overpaying for things we want. Being duped....Good thing we have people like Daniel, who I honestly trust when I buy from him. There are things on Ebay now I'd never entertain. Things I've learned to see on my own because education and knowing what I'm doing trumps my pocket. I wouldnt want to be any other way.
Thanks Daniel agian for sharing the nice video on coin cleaning. Take care.
Thanks Daniel, I'm still new to this hobby. I struggle with determining cleaned coins. This deffenatly helps watching your video, starting to under stand a little bit more.
💯 thx. Daniel !
The knowledge is so helpful to this newbie in the coin's.
Love your videos! I learn something new every time. God bless you 😎
I'm loving that 1893 Isabella beautiful coin
I've been thinking about cleaning my coins before getting them graded, but thankfully you made this video and I watched it!
Man your vids are probably the best vids out here on RUclips! I love watching em! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the good information great video
Thanks for educating us Daniel we really appreciate your honesty in this! 👍
Great Video Daniel, I have knowingly purchased cleaned coins, "Unc Details" due to the fact that an uncirculated coin "uncleaned" are sometimes just to high in price. I wanted to add them to my collection and they were bought at a discounted price. Very Beautiful too. I don't really see them as "Problem coins" I can always sell them at the lower price I bought them for. These are all NGC, PCGS, coins. Thanks Much Daniel, Our Teacher and mentor!!!! Keep them coming!!!!!
Can't thank you enough for all the valuable information you continue to share! Since finding you, I have learned so much.
Thank you Daniel. Love what you do.
Thank you!
Mr.Malone! I learned tooled ? today. I hope i spelled that correctly. I learned surface altering. THANK YOU! Great job. I didnt understand that word.❤
WOW I had no idea !! I've had cleaned coins and sold them for silver content now my belly hurts !!! Thanks for sharing !!
I really enjoy your channel. I learn something every time I watch. Thank you for sharing.
Very nice information..thanks for sharing...we all appreciate it
Thanks for the educational video. Very useful info.
You're welcome
Hi Daniel, I really have enjoyed the videos I've seen and think your doing a great job also a brilliant service for people in need of knowledge! Thank you.
Thanks!
Appreciate it, Daniel!! Coin cleaning is SOOOOOO unfortunate!! The "fool's gold" of coin collecting!!! George.
I get that cleaning takes away from a coin, but some coins are too dirty to see if they are potentially valuable or not. Is there a way to make a coin readable without diminishing its value?
Very wonderful information
Real good video, real good information. When I see the word details on the label, I consider it a value killer.
Daniel , you do a great service to the hobby ! Many Thanks !!! I have collected many cleaned coins over the years and have always discussed the issue with those I have sold them to. If both of us walked away happy that was a good sale. It pays to be upfront. What I have noticed however is the grading services have hunkered down when it comes to cleaned coins...The question begs...How severe is the cleaning and why cannot they offer a grade regardless of the cleaning? This Details label is not acceptable in my view however that is the reality of the business. It's disheartening when a coin comes back in a body bag as altered surface with no explanation . Wouldn't be so bad if they discounted the cost of that particular coin ...Thanks as always for your insight...
Thanks for you comment. I do agree.
I agree with you. Know what else is Details? Sunken treasure, which can command some of the highest prices in the hobby, to the point where the one sunken treasure I have was simply submitted to NGC for legitimate-or-not labeling, something that I wonder more and more often is available to us just so we can describe what is going on with the coin and point it out to a potential buyer/trader instead of having to go on the defensive for the Details label like for the coin he showed that was not at all ruined and that I would have probably paid him what he called the grey sheet price for since most the layer was in fact on it.
When I first saw him bring up that "tooled," I would have thought that it meant someone used a tool to fix the Earth to remove islands or something. That is the problem with all this to me. They should offer a service where they give nondealer submitters an option for what it is, what category grade it is details or not, and what's wrong. Do we really have to pay for the "potential" of having to spend time determining just what 50s or 60s category it is in? You end up wasting money for what, irritating the checker? To me, that's just as deceptive as cleaning a coin.
The Coin Guy in Florida (a guy who appears on another popular coin channel here) resubmitted a coin thinking it was undergraded by PCGS before, and got it back UNC details cleaned, no details at all. This is a guy who has been in the business probably since silver was still circulating, probably before the grader was an apple in his mother's eye. Still can't figure out where the cleaning grade came from or why his first submission didn't have it. There's simply no explanation. Yet ANACS, I think I heard, is either actually, or is thinking about, starting to explain why they give hard to swallow grades that they give, as part of their quest to rebuild their reputation (I wish ICG would do this too, but whatever). This is what happens when you have a virtual monopoly or duopoly like PCGS and NGC, but nonetheless ANACS remain uniformly cheaper than PCGS/NGC at the same grade, sometimes better than the ICG slabs, sometimes not, and it is because people like my dealer, God love him, think you have something to hide if you sent a coin there. With me, that something is "not enough money for a membership and $30 to grade a coin that they will probably return UNC or AU details in almost all, if not all, of my collection anyway." At least let me learn something.
I actually am not upset with Details. The reason they can't offer a grade is because the strike is part of the grade and cleaning removes the strike with any damage you could have done to the strike. I have heard it is also tempting to use certain cleaning methods (read: acid dipping, the worst outside brushing) to clean hairlines off proof coins.
Thanks for hearing my rant on your old post.
Yep...you " did your job "... hilarious! Thanks for making my day D.
Incredibly informative video! Love the channel 😊
Thanks Andy!
Thanks for your information.
That's what I'm talking about tell that truth Daniel cause someone has to. That's what makes a good coin buisness. Honesty is the best policy an someone will always recommend you because they know there gonna get a fair deal at your shop.
Great channel
Thank you
Great info
Thank you Daniel. for this nice video. im new, and starting collecting rare coins as my hobby. Have a great day!
Good to know thanks for sharing .
You know how I feel about cleaned coins. YES...BEAUTFUL. RIP OFF TO THE PERSON WHO BELIEVES THAT COIN COULD ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE THAT ? ❤
One of your better informed vedios. By just looking I would have thought some of those coins would be legit .
Thank you Daniel this one is very informative
Awsome video thanks for the information later grate video later
I love peace dollars. I bought a nice stack this summer. A guy said the one was cleaned. An judging by what I've learned from your videos he was trying to nab it. I later found out it was also a ddo. He almost got me my first night at a coin club
This is good to know. didn't know that cleaning was a bad thing to do for your coins.
Good video
Great info thanks
I think your a honest man. I feel the same way you do. I bought a whole bunch of coin from a friend and he clean them Nd didnt tell me but I did not know about people cleaning coin . Now I'm wondering if I can get rid of them .
That 1893 half still looks nice to me!
I agree people should be informed that there buying a clean coin
That is a shame 1916! THOSE ARE BEAUTIFUL Coins too, I cant believe it,the word tooled I don’t understand that for some reason. The V Nickel my favorite, That dark color caused by clearing too? Dipped in what! Is that dip causing that strange look? So just maybe like 1800 s & so forth could have cleaned back then too (MAYBE)? That would be very disappointing for me, especially not knowing about cleaning! Thank you again this is GREAT VIDEO!🎈🎈🎈🎈👍👍👍♈️
Acid of some type and maybe diluted with water. People have done so many things to coins it is not always known.
Great information again Daniel
Thanks for the info, as always
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
Some of those coins i would have not know it was cleaned.
I only use catch up between wheat pennies I just leave it sitting there not for long just for a few seconds and it comes out nice and clean it doesn’t even damaged I would never use it on anything else just trying to pennies
I watched your video on cleaning coins and you made a point of saying, you have to do every step the same as you. You used rubber gloves, are they anything special or just latex? You are one the few professionals that are talking about dipping coins. Thank you!
No, nothing special, the gloves are to protect your hands.
@@CoinHELPu - You are awesome. I need to look at you web site again.Thank you.
The man the myth the legend...
I have a 1970 to Eisenhower in very great condition not even cleaned or touched up or anything I have a streak of eight of them I had them by you and it is worth for the lot 800 bucks 1972 in great condition
This is two parts.
I really enjoy your videos. My dad had been part of a coin club many years ago and I have forgotten so much but I'm learning all over again and learning so much more.
Thank you.
Now, I have a question.
Back then a lot of people used coin cleaners (mainly dips), my dad used the dip cleaner on certain coins and on others a natural soap with a small horse hair brush to help loosen any dirt and grime to look at the coins more closely. Does using the natural soap and horse hair brush do much damage?
Ive seen some lightly cleaned coins out of a NGC slab go to PCGS, and it doesnt get a details grade.
I have too. I have seen done a lot of resubmitting and crossover grading with different results.
I hate seeing that Ike roughed up by cleaning. Are you aware that for some reason a lot of folks in Europe that collect insist on cleaning their coins. There seems to be some resistance to avoiding at all costs in Germany, Italy and France.
Great vid
Thank you, sir. I was wondering why you don't turn the coin over with the top side flipping toward you. Then you wouldn't have to turn them 180 degrees. Am I wrong about that?
Sorry... I have a weird mind. I respect the hell outta you and appreciate your vidyas.
Have a good one... or two!
I have a 1904 dime very similar to the one you showed. It looks almost uncirculated. I took it to a local coin shop and the gentleman offered me face value for it, so sad. 😢
Thank you for the video you did a very good job keep it up thank you
You're welcome
Right on
Is hot water considered cleaned?
I assume similar logic applies to environmental damage, scratch, and etc right?
Cleaned coins are great for hole-fillers in Dansco and Whitman albums
Looks like a cleaned coin is going to be a 25-40% hit on its condition gray sheet price, at least.
The market push to be able to sell coins at sight-unseen prices has rendered cleaned coins almost useless. Rare mints might be the only ones still salable, but you're still going to take a hit.
I quit buying loose coins for collecting from Ebay. Nearly every one of them was cleaned but sold as Gem BU. Hardly a gem after it's been cleaned but what can you do? I only buy slabbed coins and hope I can find auctions people are sleeping on
I metal detect. If I dig up a silver coin from the mud and rinse it off with water and allow it to air dry would that make it a cleaned coin?
Yes, you cleaned you coin but it's already going to have environmental damage from the group so cleaning wont hurt the coin.
Thank you so much@@CoinHELPu
I dectet also, and was wondering the same, thanks for the question.
ManO-live. You handled that well. Were do you send coins that tactically grade. Details this, Cleaned that. Scratched, yeah well we can see those, isn't that factored into numbers.
Not sure how I commented on your channel DM. Looks as if your presentation directly loaded and appeared right after the Coin Geek were this comment was destined. Does seem to fit nearly evenly similar on what your topic was.
I wouldn't buy a cleaned coin unless it's a key date like 1893 s morgan
I have jefferson nickle silver five cents year 1971-D and 2001-D and one jefferson nickle quarter dollar year 1995-D.. how much the value each now..? Thank you
I would like to clean my coins with a mild liquid detergent to get the mild dew off, would this damage the coin.
Daniel, could you possibly consider doing a video on weak strike vs wear?
It will eventually happen.
Great training video as always. I always look forward to your next one . Any info on magician coins ?
I have a couple. What do you want to know?
@@CoinHELPu I found one in my grandmother's coin box in 1988. It is 1925 dime front and a wheat back. Great condition. Worth anything and will PCGS grade them ?
@@tonizumpano7454 PCGS will not grade since it's a damaged coin.
Awesome
Thank you Flordelina!
Hey I’ve found a 1890 CC Morgan with the UNC Cleaned grade… based on what the red and blue books price I think I’m going to initially offer 160 cash. Or potentially offer some trade value. I defiantly want a CC morgan I’ve got 34 Morgan’s no CC’s and think this is a opportunity to get a rare Morgan CC granted with the clean grade at a decent price. Any advice I would be grateful. Also in your option is the price on peace dollars with mintage under 2 million going to rise. I personally think they are undervalued Like the 1927 s which mintage is only 866,000 and AU is only 75… the 1934 is under 1 million and AU is only 60… I know mainline collecting is MS 65 up, but I think getting a deal on low mint peace dollars in even AU condition could be a great investment. However would like to hear any thoughts on this.
That Ike dollar at 2:00 looks like someone took a weed whacker to it.
Generally speaking, what’s the best (least hassle and value optimization) way to sell coins? eBay, dealer direct, auction house (if there’s such a thing) or at a coin show?
I have several videos that address your questions. I couldn’t begin to answer those in the comments.
@@CoinHELPu Will do! Thank you for the informative videos.
I like my coin dealer he does fair market value.
I guess I am not going to really understand this, whole cleaned vs uncleared thing.
After seeing this video, I still couldn’t pick one out with 100% certainty.
I guess it will just need to be left for the professionals.
A few of those coins looked mighty nice to me.
Daniel, I wrote to you about my Uncles 1955 double die. While I haven't located it in his room yet, I did find a boat load of wheat cents. It appears he had a bad habit of using a pencil eraser to see the date better. If the DD is like that, will they not grade it? I will send you pics first.
Might not, depends on how bad. I have seen this before.
Basically one point in your presentation you are making is that any coin encountered with multi- hairline scratches is most likely cleaned, even if purchased at a well reputed coin shop. That description pertains to most of my Morgan Silver Dollar collection.
Depends on if the "scratches" are raised or not, there's die polish lines as well. So a coin with die lines from the mint isn't cleaned. You're looking for something that removed metal from the coin's surface thus altering the original surface forever.
What's better to buy silver rounds / silver bars or constitutional silver ?
I prefer constitutional since it's also money as well as Silver Eagles.
@@CoinHELPu ty for reply I traded out today and got silver eagles
best channel on RUclips!! for all new coin collectors and dealers i would advise watching all coin help u videos and subscribe of course 👍
I hate when dealers put stickers on a slabbed coin. That’s a deal breaker for me unless I’m there in person and it doesn’t leave residue behind.
That 1910 nickle don't look cleaned, I thought those streaks were like grain, but I'm not good with telling if a coin was cleaned. I will buy the tooled half dollar, so I can learn from it.😃
extra virgin olive oil is safe for what coins, is there a book to buy to determine?
I don't use it
Slightly off topic, but I often prefer AU58 coins to low grade MS coins, because of eye appeal. Am I the only one?
I do agree that is one thing that really angers me people who sell clean coins as if they are not clean. In my book they are thieves and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
How i clean my coins... I don't.
For Proof coins i wear clean gloves, and a face dust mask, to keep my breaths away from it. When I was a noob I screwed up some good coins, I keep those for my private collection as a remainder not to F up... 😂
luckily my most expansive proof is in a slab the rest of my proofs were already damage when I found them/ bought them
It is terrible that people are still cleaning coins, especially when it is improperly done! A 'dirty' coin could be worth more! Thank you Daniel!
With gum & poop on it?? Most "gunk" on coins includes fecal matter (aka human shit).
How much do they charge to get a coin graded?
New to coin collection 👌
PCGS and NGC have a fee schedule on their website. It depends on what and how you wan you coins graded.
The best and clear info Daniel
Do you have an Facebook group ?
Yes and thanks facebook.com/groups/coincollectinghelp/
It's really too bad every coin needs to be slabbed. If I bring nice MS coins to a dealer that aren't slabbed all they offer is melt. I'm so disgusted with the hobby anymore and I've collected for 40 years! Never EVER clean your coins EVER!
What I don't get is that you would expect a circulated coin to loose some of its original surface. So why cleaned?
I don’t do anything to circulated coins
Hi Dan , I have a question for you . Which would you rather prefer ? !893 s morgan VF20 CAC or 1893s morgan XF details . Both PCGS .
VF20 CAC
I won't buy cleaned or raw coins. I got burnt many times when I first started out because I didn't know what to look for. What I don't understand is why you buy them since they are harder too sell and tend to be sold for a loss? Simple fix would be too stop buying them. JMO.
If you're going to sell coins, you need to know all of this....seems to be a huge problem in this community, a significant percentage of people have no business selling coins.....I personally plan to sell in the future, and its my responsibility to know what I have and how it should be priced.
I agree with you. I've preached this for years. Mistakes happen but I see so many cleaned coins being sold as problem free in the groups and communities.
@@CoinHELPu I was looking at a 1878S Morgan the other day....coin looked great at first glance. Then I zoomed in on it and saw what looked like to be hairline scratches. I asked the seller if it was ever cleaned. First red flag was the person took my question as if I was accusing them of cleaning the coin. Theres been alot of time between 1878 and now. Then they followed up with..."it looks fine to me". I told them what I could actually do on a details coin and never heard back.
Never deal with someone who acts this way.....pay attention to their responses to completely valid questions, and avoid them if their responses seem childish and immature.
Okay I watched youe.video knowlage WELL received if I have what I believe it to be a 1969s DDO PCGS GRADED IT TO BE CLEANED / DETAILED / GENUINE SO IF IT'S UNCLEAN AND WORTH SAY 50.000 WOULD YOU SAY IT CAN HIT ATLEAST 25.000
Wow on the caps. If you watch the entire video I never claimed all coins are 50% less when cleaned, but the common coins can be and series that very few collect can, and the eye appeal of the coin will also determine the "discount". The 1969 S DDO is a different breed of coin than what the videos about. I guess I need a part two for this question.
I like your honesty! Do you sell on eBay?
My peace Dollar (BU) hasn’t been cleaned but looks very similar to the one in the video. It looks like it has a powdery white luster on it on both obverse and reverse. However, some places, like the hair, look like the powdery surface has smudged off.
Was a powdery white luster a feature of peace Dollar?
Regardless, I really like Peace and Morgans.
Thanks again for the information.
There's no powdery anything on a Peace Dollar this is not a substance that smudges.
