  • In this video we are comparing the different between different Mint State ( MS ) graded Morgan Silver Dollars! To spice it up a bit we went with all Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars, but the most important part is that they were all the same Year and Mint Mark, as well as graded by the same Grading Service (in this case, PCGS ).
So, let me know what you think below, and do you disagree with the grades and think that they should have been graded differently?

I got the 63 and 64 reversed after showing the side by side I can see the difference in the luster in the field and would probably choose the 64 as the best coin now

Grading is 100% subjective to which grader sees the coin, and which day it crosses the table.
There's good money made in cracking nice coins out of lower ms holders and sending them back in. Bulk grading prices are $5-$8 per coin. Well worth it for quite a few mintage/years.
Buy the coin, not the holder.

      Same applies to the collectors
      The whole hobby is subjective
Although PCGS was started by a group of collectors, ultimately the collectors made PCGS and NGC the success they are today
There’s a reason the buy the coin not the holder cliche started - They’re good for a guide
      The hobby needs them though
Can you imagine raw coins being sold and traded though auction houses like Heritage stacks and great collections
Values would be softer and all over the place
Raw coins were auctioned off pre 1980
All that said, the hobby’s in need of a revamp and Pcgs NGC et al need to modernize and upgrade some processes
Things like tracking a coins history to prevent regrades, favoritism to big client s(cough cough David Lawrence cough cough ) etc
But these things won’t happen as they’re publicly traded corporations that have to make investors money
What the hobby needs is for the top tier grading services like
Pcgs NGC to be non profit. That alone would prevent the current conflict of interest it is

Thought the 63 was the 64, the 64 the 63 and I same with the 61 and 62 lol. This is why I'm afraid to get my unc morgans graded. Leaving up the overall value and grade of it up to what one persons opinion is. Although seeing the 66 gives me hope of some of mine coming back 64s to 67s

its easy to see the difference its about luster and eye appeal as well ive seen AU 58s with less contact marks then MS 63s if you try to grade coins just by contact marks it wont go well for you + you had the 61 tilted too much you can clearly see that was the lowest grade due to the lack of luster but by tilting it you hide some of the scratches and contact marks easy way to see it is the thick white coat especially on the Carson city Morgans thats a start to learning the difference but it takes time to see the difference just start comparing coins to already graded coins in NGC or PCGS holders and you will learn over time wow just realized this video is from Dec you may have learned this by now

This helped me to be more knowledgable on the tiny differences between grades. Wish I saw this many moons ago. I have a tendency to grade my coins a little too high. This helped me too calm down. Thanks for this important information. Chow.

I thought the MS 63 looked better than the MS 64. But that is why I have to leave it to the graders. I also don't buy a coin until it is graded simply because of my inability to judge what isn't a bad mark and what is a bad mark.

Luster and strike and eye appeal are the other main components of coin grade other than chatter.
If you look at Pcgs website they’ll show their eye appeal guide specifically on Morgan dollars and what they consider to be very positive effects of eye appeal to positive to neutral to negative to strongly negative
Lustrous original surfaces will forgive chatter and hits especially if not in prime focal areas. The general guide 60-62 are “Uncirculated “
    63-64 are “choice uncirculated”
    65+ are “gems”
And of course coins can be regraded with different results including details grades become problem free and vice versa
I made the first 1896-O Barber half dollar in AU58 back in 2012. At the time it was a pop 0 coin and it took 4 submissions from a moderately large dealer who was very sharp and submitted hundreds of coins a month to Pcgs
They were hesitant to grade it 58
I sold it in 2014 in a heritage auction for over $14k

I think the grader might have been drinking heavily when he was grading these coins lol. 💿👑

  • @disgruntledgrunt241
    @disgruntledgrunt241 Год назад

When you get to the MS67's + and higher in many denominations the grader is hesitant to add more coins to low populations of specific grades.
The ability to change the value of a coin exponentially by a single grade or even a + should be in the hands of AI soon and take human element of subjectivity out of coin grading.

That was an interesting video :)
The only thing I know about grading is that you never know what to expect. I once saw someone post a slabbed Jefferson Nickel to a Facebook group. It had been designated FS even though it had a big gash across 4 of the steps.
As the old adage goes: Buy the coin and not the holder!

That reverse die clash you pointes out , near the wreath, is on 1883 reverses too. I have a philly and new orleans , both are pcgs ms64 and have that same die clash. Neat stuff. My new favorite morgan dollar fact is the 1921 denver was struck with silver from the famous comstoc lode! That makes it the only denver morgan and the only comstoc lode morgans.

To me the 63 looks better that the 64. Look at her ear, the 64 look wore and flatter than the 63. The 63 has more detail to me. I guess it really depends on the grader for that day lol like buying a car, wonder if a Monday or a Friday grade differs from the rest of the week days.

Thank you for the video. Morgan is THE ONE coin I acquire and study. Honestly...after over 4 and a half years I still have great joy w/the coins...but am less and less confident in the THIRD PARTY GRADERS. For ex: on that 6 CC in the video...I've had a (multi-line scrape) very much like that - but much smaller (and like the 6 in the video, it was impossible to know for sure where the scrape came from)...but they decided to give (this stunning 78 Rev of 79, and PL)...a DETAILS. Just sickening to see. There are plenty of other examples. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I BELIEVE W/THE 3RD P. GRS...THEIR GRADERS ARE NOT BOUND TO THEIR OWN STANDARDS/DEFINITIONS! Too many times - especially on coins that meet/exceed their own definition of PL...do not get the PL. And so there the coin sits...in the holder, very beautifully reflective, yet because it was not given the PL, when I asked a dealer: they would not even budge on their offer of (roughly 15% off wholesale)...from a typical coin of the same grade (w/out PL)...and w/PL, the price triples.

frankly, I dont give a shit with silver coin. dont play with this "certificate" game. just stack. go find new manufactured at low price; no dent, no crack, no scratch, no cripple, no deformation, no stain..new is perfect, fresh, shinny. just my opinion

That's fair my friend! However these aren't collected for Silver at all. Carson City Silver Dollars, although techincally Silver, and 100% numismatic coins, and the grades for these do matter. I understand where you are coming from for just regular Silver Bullion though, many people share that opinion. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment!
