    You have added a lot to the body of knowledge about this caliber. Especially since the old 57 forum disappeared. It took a lot of reloading data and developed knowledge about how to make the FN pistols run and with it when it was gone. As I learned more about the ammo I became concerned that the hype about armor defeating a handgun that made me want to get one was out of my reach since that ammo was only sold to law enforcement and the military. Started to think all I had was a hyped up PMR 30, which I have also, but after finding your channel and a couple of others I see there are some options. Here is an example of the problem with 5.7x28mm:
    In those famous FBI shootouts. If the Agents had the FN 5.7 or the Ruger 5.7x28mm they would have done worse to stop the "bad" guys. _But_ the FBI Agent's would have penetrated their body armor & car doors.
    Thus, in normal every day self-defense incidents the weakness of the 5.7x28 due to bad performance out of under 10 inch barrels.
    This is easily seen compared to a 9mm or .45 ACP round man stoppers.

  • @GunFunZS

      Because of C-19, if you find yourself choosing between these two, price isn't a huge difference anymore. Most dealers are charging $700-800 for this pistol. If you don't like the manual safety on the FSN, get the Ruger. If you have concerns about slide rust and don't want to Cerakote the slide, get the FSN. Do you want a threaded barrel option, get the FSN. Do you need a thinner grip? Get the Ruger. I would say right now there's nothing glaring about the R57 that would make me not pick it over the FN. They both operate on the same cam delayed blowback operating mech, so a lot of it's personal preference.

    Thanks for the reviews, my man. I'll definitely be looking out in the future for your vids on 5.7x28 as you've become one of the top resources for this caliber.
    Speaking of this caliber, it looks like on your spreadsheet that the difference between SS195LF and SS198LF are extremely small. So, save money and the issue of having red "LEO only" boxes by getting 195...?

    • @BuffRANGE
      @BuffRANGE  3 года назад

      It seems that way. SS195LF seems to vary the most in velocity, and these powders used in 5.7 (at least the FN and Fiocchi loads) are very temperature dependent. I've hit over 2200 fps in SS198LF before, but never in SS195LF or SS192.

    • @calangel
      @calangel 3 года назад

      @@BuffRANGE that's interesting. I'd like to see SS190 with domestic intermediate powders like True Blue, Silhouette, or CFE Pistol; or some slower magnum powders like H110 or maybe an extruded powder like 4227 which isn't temp sensitive and is obscenely accurate.

    • @calangel
      @calangel 3 года назад

      @@BuffRANGE speaking of that velocity in the 5.7, innovation is appearing to make the 9mm compete better and better with the 5.7 in armor penetration. Check this out: www.ammoland.com/2020/10/dangy-dagger-9mm-round-defeats-level-3a-body-armor/#axzz6aOj4pp9p
      When they release the component bullets, I will be loading them (or buying, depending on the cost of the cheaper version). The wound cavity a slug like this would create moving at over 2200fps in a non-fragmenting 9mm would be amazing.

    • @BuffRANGE

      @@calangel I saw that, and that will be very interesting. Wonder what they can come up with in 5.7 though :D

    • @calangel
      @calangel 3 года назад

      @@BuffRANGE I don't think it will be better than ss190, t6b, s4, or VO's black fang. Tumbling send to be where the damage is with 5.7x28mm....unless they leverage the hollow point area around the tip to guarantee quick tumbling after penetration. Fleet-yaw phenomenon is likely what blurs the reputation of ss190 performance.

    Love this pistol. In the process of talking to some custom shop gunsmiths to see about contracting a custom threaded barrel. Not that I have any interest in suppressing it (all 5.7x28 has going for it is speed, so subsonic 5.7 ammo isn't much better than 22lr imo) but because I want to run a comp. 5.7 develops a lot of pressure behind the slug, so a comp should do serious work. With how little muzzle flip the R57 has already, a properly dialed in comp should be able to produce a perfectly flat shooting pistol WITHOUT sacrificing terminal ballistics.😄

    Thanks for the links to the evals. I have been comparing the T6B and the BlackFang and have noticed that I get better groups out of the BlackFang. Do you have any thoughts on this? And what are the problems associated with the fiveseven and popped primers. This happens with T6B in my experience.

    • @BuffRANGE
      @BuffRANGE  3 года назад

      Could be something to do with aerodynamics? Or Maybe the BDF is a little more mild than the T6B so it could be not past the point where speed affect accuracy? More bearing surface on the BDF? Or bullet shape keeps it spinning "true" when leaving the barrel?
      Popped primers could be a result of that primer not being able to handle the extra pressure of the round. I know EA uses military surplus SS190 pulled brass, but has used SS197SR/AE TMJ brass in the past, and maybe that primer isn't to spec? Is it silver or brass colored? I've popped a fair share of primers, but only when testing the original CMMG Banshee and it was with some DAS ammo that's no longer made.

    Maybe I just got a good trigger in mine, but it seems significantly different than this one. Mine has no mush after the take up. It's actually a pretty crisp break. Not a glass rod break, but a really clean break. Even when I pull as slowly as possible it goes from take up, to wall, to break very nicely. It's like the hammer on the one I have is already fully cocked. I can't see any rearward movement of the hammer when I pull the trigger. I actually really like the trigger on it.
    I can't be the only one whose trigger is like this. Can someone else verify that theirs is too? I'm not trying to "one up" or say that "mines better than yours" with this comment. I'm just curious which trigger is more common, mine or the great buffman's here. I don't really get on forums so idk what everyone else is saying about their's.

      Got it in March, I think. I might have a 250 rounds through it. Haven't shot it much. Been trying to save most of the 600 or 700 rounds I have on hand just in case this shortage lasts longer than we think. But I just watched the hammer again throughout the entire trigger pull. It does have a very little movement right when the trigger hits the wall. I guess was looking at the hammer after I had already gotten the trigger to the wall. And after rewatching your video, the movement is about the same. A little hard to tell exactly from the over head view, but it seems pretty close at least. I'm mostly amazed at how different the trigger pull is between the one you have and the one I have. It looks like mine has a little less take up, but after that it hits a hard wall and there's no way I could pull it that it wouldn't break immediately after that wall. Unlike the statement I made about the hammer movement, there really is zero movement in the trigger after it gets to the wall. Other than the break, obviously. I'm sure you'd know better than me on this... do you think yours or mine is the more common as far as trigger pull?

Good luck with finding ammo now! R57 is no thinner or lighter than G17 and R57 magazine holds only 3 more rounds. Moreover, Ruger 57 is unsafe to carry with loaded chamber. See Owner's Manual, page 21. Also, widely reported spongy trigger, flimsy sights, failures to eject, stovepipes, etc., etc. Instead of hipsterish 5.7x28 Ruger should give 7.62x25 new life. Conclusion: Glock 19, loaded with 50 - 147 grains, rules!
