      Martina - Steffi head to head: 9-9. 5-4 at grand slams. Even though Martina was not at her best anymore, 12.5 years older than Graf. In her prime, she was better than Geaf

    • @rajusaha855
      @rajusaha855 3 месяца назад +2

      There is a caveat there. First of all Martina first 5 wins came against pre prime Steffi. Since 1987 it's Graf who leads their h2h 8-4. Then 16 of their 18 matches took place on fast courts which favoured Martina rather than Steffi. Infact after her lost to Steffi in 1987 French open final she was clever enough to skip clay court tournament & rebound ace court in Australian open which favoured Steffi more. Had she not skip those surface during Steffi's peak then their h2h could have been different. And last but not least the reason Martina fare well against Steffi & Monica because she was a late developer. The same age when Graf won the golden slam & Monica dominated the tennis world, a fat & chubby Martina lost to pregnant Margaret Court in Wimbledon 1975😂😂, struggle against granny Wade, BJK , Evonne Goolagong & was Evert bunny. In fact a prime 24 years Martina in 1980 lost to 37 years old granny BJK then lost 3 consecutive times to 15 years old kid Andrea Jeager. Evert double bageled Martina in 1981 Amelia islands but then Martina drastically improved her game. Had Martina give it all in 70's then couldn't hang around with peak Steffi & Monica. Understand

      @@gentlemanjim480Steffi's got the best Slam win ratio, she won her 22 across only 12yrs, that's off the charts impressive! Won her 'Golden Slam' whilst only 18/19 at the time, records are always there to be shot at & broken but in some of Steffi's feat's it really is hard to see them ever being eclipsed! Don't see Martina's 9Wimbledon titles being surpassed either, 2 greats of the Women's game.

      @sabueso32. Although Graf's footwork on a tennis court overall was excellent, her footwork on the rare times she hit a topspin backhand was not proper footwork because she almost invariably hit that shot from a semi-open stance instead of hitting it properly with a closed stance. The lightweight and powerful graphite rackets allowed her to still hit the topspin backhand effectively (e.g., against Navratilova when Navratilova came into the net) despite her improper footwork on that shot. The best footwork in women's pro tennis that I have ever seen was Chris Evert's and (after she got herself into outstanding physical fitness condition) Navratilova's.

      @@carrerau7138 Typical Graf fanboy. Drawing an arbitrary line (post-1985) so you don't have to acknowledge that Navratilova has a positive head to head against Graf generally and at grand slams. So you just pick a time after which the head to head favours Graf, presumably because Steffi was too young before. You can equally say that Navratilova was past her prime later. Besides, I don't care about H2H in assessing Graf. Nobody doubts she was an incredible player - Graf's 1988 was probably the most dominant year ever played by a tennis player. I just didn't like Graf as a person. Arrogant, terrible behaviour with zero empathy shown after her fan stabbed Monica Seles. Cold German woman. I don't miss her.

    I don't begrudge old timers that say Margaret Court is the women's GOAT, or the younger set that think it is Serena or maybe will be Iga in a few more years. For me, though, Steffi set the standard and will always be the greatest woman's player of all time. It's a combination of her talent, her competitive fire, her elegance, her class and her humility. Likewise, I put Roger at the top of the men's GOAT list, but understand why Laver, Connors, Sampras, Borg, Nadal or Nole would be some else's pick. No one, not even current or past great tennis players, has the speed, agility, and athletic grace like Steffi Graf!
    Look at Steffi hitting the greatest powerful forehand ever at 10:40 🤩 👏
    Steffi literally ran around one of the best, if not greatest, lefty serve of Martina N. and powered a forehand winner through Martina. Even players today would have a difficult time running around a severe lefty ‘hook’ serve and executing a return on the extreme ad/left side of the court both clean and powerful.
    Sure current players can run around a lefty serve but it would not look good. It would look like a messy shot with arms flailing away along with matching grunts. So rather than hit an awkward run around forehand, they would hit a stretching backhand return.
    Ok maybe Roger Federer 😌 could pull off a runaround shot with athletic grace but Steffi’s iconic forehand complemented with her athleticism is unmatched, no rival, consistently executing those inside-in or inside-out runaround forehands, forever known as the greatest forehand ever!!!
    Another great forehand just for fun at 19:20!

      Martina never played better tennis as in Wimbledon 1988 and in the 1989 saison against Steffi. Young Graf triggered the best out of her - cause nobody was challenging the way Graf did.There was a reiging empress who was domininating, beeing a class of her own. And there was this young girl who came closer and closer. They had amazing battles in 1987 in Wimbledon and at the US Open.
      For me the Wimbledon final1988 (on Navratiovas most favorite surface )is one of the best matches ever played. It was a real shot out of highest quality. i remember Martina saying after: its the legs .she is reaching balls that no one else can reach. After her loss in 1989 Martina gave Graf a chain that she had worn all the last years. She said: i lost against a better player today.

      I think it is safe to say that the players from today would beat the players from the past if they would play with the same equipment. It is just that the techniques and training methods have advanced. If you look at football from the 70's it is much slower and less body contact than today.
      However Martina and Steffi have been heros of their times and have played remarkable tennis. Their successes speak for themselves.

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 Год назад +1

      @nicholasschroeder3678. The men's pro tour during the 1980s was MUCH MORE competitive than the Federer, Djokovic and Nadal era! From the mid-1970's thru the mid-1990's, there were no less than 10 all-time great players competing at or near the top of men's pro tennis including Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Lendl, Vilas, Wilander, Becker, Edberg, Sampras and Agassi! By contrast, there have only been 3 all-time great players during the current, irrefutably weakest era in men's tennis history - Federer Djokovic and Nadal and no others! AND, the current era has 0 serve-and-volley players! So the current era in tennis is completely bereft of any diversity of playing styles! The level of play displayed by the great players of the 1970's thru the 1990's was a superior level of play because at that time the game had not been cheapened to the extreme extent that it has been cheapened in the current era! The cheapening of the game back then was the regrettable introduction of the graphite technology in tennis equipment (unfortunately allowing it to replace the wood and metal rackets which were real tennis) which , as Connors accurately pointed out, elevated the players' games a full level above their actual abilities, but the game has been cheapened even more since then by the deplorable introduction of the lubricated strings, larger Type3 tennis ball, harder Type1 tennis ball, the abandonment of the lightening fast indoor supreme court carpet surface and the recent abandonment of the fast DecoTurf2 hard court surface at the U.S. Open and the alteration of the composition of the grass courts at Wimbledon in 2001, all of which have combined to wrongly and unfairly favor baseline play over net play and have resulted in the current era players' level of play being artificially elevated an addition half-level to a full level above their actual abilities which means that the current era players are playing at least a level-and-a-half to 2 levels above their true abilities!!!!

      Nothing measures up to, or comparable to, an athlete that got literally stabbed and removed out of the picture to help another athlete regain dominance.

      @@magnetmac1 The aftermath of a minor stabbing is certainly less taxing than an ongoing scandal in which you and your family are drawn through the gutter.
      Seles would have ended her career under such a pressure.
      Whereas Steffi would have played again after the stab wound had healed (which was in a few months).
      I know that it is hard for you Yankees to accept that a forinner is the GOAT. But that‘s the way it is.
