Winning Wimbledon AND Us Open of 1989 and still not being able to end 1989 as the world number one. That was strange. I love Becker! But I check and ok, Lendl won Australian Open in 1989.
Agassi once said that Lendl was tougher to play against than Becker, because Lendl never ever plays a bad match. Agassi also said if Becker is playing great, sorry you have no chance.
Agassi figured out something that Becker did with his tongue on his serve, so he was able to read it and knew where his serve was coming. He told Becker about it years later, Becker had no clue he was doing it, but said he used to think that Andre was reading his mind!
@@JoltinJoe There are multiple videos on that, and you can literally see videos of Becker doing this with his tongue, and telegraphing his serve. Results don't lie, Agassi owned him. Andre did not make that up. He was not a better player than Becker, they were only 3 years apart in age, and he won 9 out of their last 10 head to head once he figured it out. Becker actually made Lendl look inadequate from the baseline which was unthinkable especially at the US open. It was the pinnacle of Becker’s career. You can see Lendl going to his back up plan of serve and volley as he was not able to force the initiative from the baseline. Lendl played well but Becker played better when it mattered.

Don't mean to offend anyone but Tennis back then was way better than today's. Clash of styles, clash of personalities, clash of approaches to the game itself. @uwe2811 Agreed. Tennis technology today is So different as compared to the 1980’s. Two different worlds. Players today, if given the rackets used back then, would most likely play very similar tennis. 1980s compared to 2020’s… extremely different tennis worlds 🎾

Becker was in the semifinals in Roland Garros that same , got beat by Edberg who lost to Chang in the finals . 1989 was very successful year for BB.

golden age
Verglichen mit heutigem Powertennis war das damals schon ein bisschen gemächlicher.
