We will never see volleying of this like again. Astonishing net skills from Navratilova. A relentless performance here by Martina. Attack, attack, attack. She applied so much pressure when she played like that. Congratulations to Martina Navratilova. This was a great rivalry back in the day.
Yup for that much faster courts and rackets that generate speed instead of topspin would be needed. Think, the average rotation of Sampras’ or Agassi’s shots were around 1800 rotations per minute. Roger and Nole 2500. Rafa 3200 (peaking at 5000). You can’t serve and volley in those conditions. Or you’d have to make surfaces so fast that big serves would own everything. Just think how slow today’s grass is vs grass in the 80s and 90s.
You also need to remember that Graf was a totally new beast, attacking so hard from the baseline was new. Her game was an evolution, and played at a GOAT level, and yet martinas game had enough scope to handle it.
@Max E - Since I don't watch either I would not know, but you see it a lot in other sports. Watch the close races in the Olympics. Everybody congratulates the winner. Check 21:17 on this. ruclips.net/video/JX3ij39OAso/видео.html&ab_channel=Olympics
@@danielgoncalves8079 No, she was too weak on slower surfaces. 3-11 against Evert on clay. 0-2 against Steffi on clay (Martina avoided Steffi on clay after Steffi had turned 18). 0-3 against Zvereva on clay. 😂 Steffi is the greatest because she no weaknesses.
@@gk891statistics says she is GOAT !!! ❤ I don’t know how she won this match anyway, her shots back at Steffi were landing half court .. well it was 1987 , Steffi figured it out 😂❤

The resolution is amazing for 1987. I really miss those eras in women’s tennis when you had matchups of all time greats in a Slam final, a clash of the titans.
Honestly, does anyone ever get excited before a Slam now that we might get to see Barty and Osaka square off in the final? Uh,,,,, no. It’s shocking these days if more than one of the four semi finalists is even in the top 10 bc the women’s game is so bad and inconsistent now. Seeing evert, Navratilova, graf, seles, and later Serena , Hingis,Venus, Davenport, henin, clijsters, mauresmo,,Capriati, sharapova, et all squaring off was really something you’d look forward to bc of the greatness and consistency.
@@rexdby2984 Men's tennis is gonna get there when Raffa and Nole retire :( Theim and Medvedev are good, but like that's the future. That's it. On the women's side agree, Halep and Barty are good, but they're not great. Osaka is way too inconsistent to be considered great, even if she shows flashess of greatness, and Bianca is also a little inconsistent and then always injured. Sabalanka shows potential, but other then that women's tennis has nothing. It's pathetically shallow, and none of the players on this list are good enough to dominate this shallow field. It's sad. I hoped Bianca could, but that she's played in 3 events in the last year, she's always injured and at only 19, that's not a good sign
@@rexdby2984 If you get the chance to take in a slam, I'd suggest you go and immerse yourself in that experience. Just watch the difference in court attendance when a ladies living legend takes to the court when there is a current top tenner currently playing. You'll witness an exodus to the outside courts when Navratilova, Davenport, Martinez and co come on for their doubles encounters. Seriously, it's been like a stampede at Wimbledon and US where people just scramble to go watch some actual tennis - rather than the vacuous, witless ball thrashing that passes for the women's game these days. I got chatting to Martina with an old friend just 3 years ago at Wimby - she spent a little time with us, took some selfies, chatted about the world - Davenport was really nice too. They really could show some of the current crop of women how to grace a court and charm a crowd :-) Incidentally that was the evening when Davenport and McEnroe openly stated on BBC TV highlights that Evert and Nav' would still be top 5 players, even in today's game, because they were such very skilled players.
@GoTeam there was all kinds of controversy about Martina's run. Before Martina won 4 in a row, the ITF announced that they'd consider a non calendar grand slam as a full grand slam and pay a $1 million bonus for anyone who did it. Martina did the non calendar slam, got the $1 million, but then the ITF said they'd changed their mind and a non calendar grand slam was not to be classed as a full grand slam
@Ilya Kuryakin Golden age my arse! There were no True tennis Greats at that time. Apart from Navratilova and Evert. Who were around 30 years of age by the mid 80s. Old for a tennis player at the time, past their peak. Seles was the only true 'great' at the time. Were was Graf when Seles won 7 out of 9 Slams before her stabbing? Were was Steffi Graf ??? Were ! Getting spanked 6-0 by Sánchez Vicario at RG.? GOAT's Never get dominated when they are at their peak. NEVER !
@Ilya Kuryakin @Ilya Kuryakin @Ilya Kuryakin Navratilova turned 30 in 1986. If players peak at that age, why did Steffi Graf retire at 30? Why? She knew she was getting old and her body could not cope with the stress of the tour. Also Seles was still a Junior when Graf won those titles in the 80's. Dummy.
Steffi Graf reached three of the four grand slam tournaments in 1987, always playing against Navratilova. Of course 1988 she reached and won all four tournaments plus the Olympics, and once again reaching all 4 finals in 1989, almost repeating another grand slam sweep but lost to Sanchez Vicario at the French Open. In 1990, she reached 2 GS finals, and finally lost at Wimbledon in the Semis to Zina Garrison...GUYS, THATS 13 CONSECUTIVE FINALS, ALMOST 3 YEARS OF PLAYING FOR GRAND SLAMS!!! I don't think that record can be touched!!!
I agree with the previous posts. Great variety, net play, slices, and point construction that is enjoyable to watch. I can't even watch today's baseline grinders/ grunters.
@Jim Stark Yes but with the rackets of that era it was impossible for a girl to serve at 115 mph, so to win they could only use their technique, class, variety combined with power( Graf's forehand was very powerful, and it would work today as well). Today the girls can only be stronger to serve at 115 mph, the game has become more physical, but this isn't good for tennis, it becomes faster, but there are less technique and skills and for me it's less beautiful.
@@valeriocostantini1959 There is plenty of beauty in women's tennis today. You just to have to except the fact, that it is also a very fast and powerful game as well. Deal with it.
@Max E Exactly. Their rivalry is perhaps the greatest rivalry ever in the women’s game, I don’t think we will ever see such level of tennis in the women’s game. Compare it to the absolutely tragic errorfest AO final between Osaka and Brady or the diabolical RG final between Krejcikova and overweight Pavlyuchenkova. And people have the audacity to say that the WTA has “depth”. Lmao.
@@alansach8437 she would surely have won more slams then she retired with, even if it was just a few more. I think getting stabbed really affected her later in her career. For a professional athlete to not play 2.5 years, they really lose their momentum.
Ha ha yes. Martina had this "makeover" sometime in the summer of 87, because earlier 87 tournaments she had her normal, natural style. Then after the spring tournament stretch, she had this mullet.
Steffi Graf just turned 18 here and overtook Navratilova as world number one. Beautiful Steffi. The following year, at just 19 years old Graf won every GS and the Olympic medal - the so-called “Golden Slam”. Impressive achievement! ✌️
Joey Convery Seles came and became number one BUT NEVER dominated Graf. Graf was the one dominating Seles. Seles never achieved the Golden Slam. Seles never achieved the same calendar slam. Seles had “zero” Wimbledon. Graf was kicking Seles’ ass. 🤣 Head to head was 10-5, for the ONLY Golden Slam achiever, the great Steffi Graf. 😀👌
Jack Reacher there are so many of these people on RUclips. It’s crazy. They live in a make believe world where Seles was this great champion that dominating Graf yada yada yada. Just nuts give how little truth there is to any of it.
Joey Convery we can agree to disagree. But you don’t have to post the same thing over and over again. If it’s just her game you like better, great. I just find saying she was better to be based on almost nothing else.
Yes, credit to Martina for really preparing to face Steffi here in the championship match. And credit to Martina for quickly adapting to and solving Steffi's game more within a few months. Though Steffi would only continue to grow and develop her game and possess more dimensions in her game, which is why she ended up having her historic career after especially after 87!
@@alexsdb9712 Steffi solved Navratilova’s game in 1988/89. She beat her in 3 great slam finals and an equally great YEC final. Even though in 1989 especially Martina was at the peak of her powers - she would have had a 70-win streak between June 1989 and April 1990 if it weren’t for Supersteffi.
@tobiasisback4605 Martina avoided Steffi like hell on slower surfaces after her loss to 17-year-old Steffi in the FO 87 final. 16 of the 18 Graf-Navratilova matches were played on fast courts, the H2H was 9-9 in the end. That is a very unusual rivalry. Graf-Seles for instance played 8 of 15 matches on slow surfaces (clay, slow HC), the H2GH was 10-5 in Steffi's favor in the end. So it is safe to say that Steffi would have had the upper hand against Navi with 14-4 H2H or so if at least half of their 18 matches had been played on slow surfaces.
@tobiasisback4605 When Steffi retired on August 13, 1999, Serena was not even ranked among the top 10. And grass court specialist Venus (already 19 years old!) had just been comprehensively beaten in Wimbledon by good old Steffi with her reconstructed knee. As soon as Steffi was gone - not earlier! - the Willies started to win slams. Navratilova was the archetypical late bloomer who was in her prime in 1982-89 at age 25-32 and still quite good on superfast surfaces up until age 37. On slower surfaces, however, she was a punching bag for everybody from 1988 on.
@tobiasisback4605 Peak 1986 Navi was destroyed by baby Steffi on clay with 62 63. 1988/1989 were the only two years when both were in their prime (= 7 best years). Steffi beat Navratilova in 4 of 4 matches then, all slam/YEC finals.
superb quality. Always loved the all-round game and contrast between the two: Queen of Serve&Volley vs Fräulein Forehand...although here they are playing with the same Dunlop stick ;)
@coffeeinthemorning I believe Martina switched to the same Dunlop 200G because she wanted the same power as Steffi Graf. But Steffi Graf's forehand power didn't come from the Dunlop racquet, it was just the way she struck (stroked) the ball.
A very solid performance from Martina, using all her experience. For Steffi, I can't help but think that this whole tournament was something of a choke for her. She had just become world number one and I think the pressure was getting to her
@@liamhen yup, illness can be brought on by stress though, and I think that was the case here. The pressure on her must have been huge, in all fairness. I can't help thinking she froze somewhat in the 87 Wimbledon final too. Didn't play anywhere near as well in the final as she did in the semis.
Liamhen, whether it was "reported" or not, I didn't see any difference in Graf's play from previous rounds or matches!!!. As for "being ill", take a read at Chris Evert's book where she states that bother her AND Martina had very heavy periods and in some big matches they could hardly walk!!!. But because they were the number 1 and 2 in the world you HAD to PLAY ON!!!. Also in her book, she recalls having a "mystery virus" and before a big game at Wimbledon, she was lying in a darkened room for 3 days BEFORE the game!!!. At Wimbledon one year it was "reported" that Graf had a "major injury" to her left knee and could "hardly walk". She came on the court with a PLASTER on her knee and ran about like a gazelle and won easily in straight sets!!!. So I suggest you don't take anything that's "reported" as being right!!!.
@tobiasisback4605Yes, usually but not necessarily. To suggest that 91 Steffi was peak Steffi is asinine. That year she was clearly worse than even 88/89 Navratilova. Why do you think Seles became #1 in 1991?
@tobiasisback4605 Where might I even have indicated that Steffi was better at age 30 than in 1988/89? Are you to lazy to compare Steffi of 1988/89, Steffi of 1991/92, Steffi of 1995/96 and Steffi of 1999? Apparently since you are a Selestial nutter….
@tobiasisback4605 That's only because Martina avoided Steffi on slower surfaces. After her loss to 17-year-old Steffi at the FO 87 they played 10 more matches: - 3 on grass - 4 on carpet - 3 on (fast) USO hard courts. Still Steffi won 6 of those 10 matches. That is Steffi's beauty - she was at least top three in the world on every surface. And that makes her the GOAT according to most fans and experts.
@tobiasisback4605 1) Steffi has the best winning percentage on CARPET in the open era. 2) She also has the best winning percentage on HARD COURTS in the open era. 3) Steffi has the SECOND-best winning percentage on CLAY in the open era (behind only Evert). 4) Her winning percentage on GRASS is not among the top three only because she played one third (!) of her grass tournaments as a 13/15-year old, losing all of them of course. Serena and Navratilova didn't play at that age, Evert played only 2 grass tournaments at age 15. Post-age-15 Steffi also has the best grass winning percentage as well. Steffi had no weaknesses but the Golden Slam. These 3 Americans all had their weaknesses somewhere. But don't have the Golden Slam. There is a reason why (outside of the USA) 80 % of tennis fans think that Steffi is the GOAT.
@tobiasisback4605 Granny Navi at 37 was top 5 and made slam finals. Baby 13/14-yo Steffi didn’t even make a semi in a non-slam. But you are free to count all grass results from age 16 to 33. Guess who had the best winning percentage then as well… 😂
I’m glad Martina sqeaked through this match because it was the last time Martina was better than Graf. Martina won Wimbledon and the Open which in everyone’s book made her number one for 1987 except for the computer which mad Graf number one with winning most of the tournaments in 1987 including beating Martina in French Open. ,
Only some bitter Americans thought that Navi was still the #1 at the end of 1987. 😂 Steffi was 75-2 win/loss that year, Martina 56-8. Steffi won 11 tournaments, Martina 4. Only imbeciles count ONLY slams and slam matches.

@tobiasisback4605 I just wanted to mention it since it is usually US tennis fans who come up with the weirdest excuses for their faves' losses against Steffi.
The Crowd of New York has never been on Martina's side until Evert retirement, even if Martina played with anybody else, the US Open crowd was Always against her.Ridiculous
Martina was more in her element here on what were once fast hardcourts…I do find it fascinating as these two played in the 91 semifinal and you can see tennis was improving ever year as the 91 match both these players I think were playing better tennis..I guess you could make an argument Martina played better week in week out in 87 versus 91 BUT the top of them is was always and evolving and improving
Wta4hand right. Raising the net wouldn’t bring back serve and volley. It would make it harder to serve as big - more players would rely on topspin and slice serves to overcome the new net height. It would further reinforce the topspin of today’s players, given the added net clearance. Speeding up the courts and balls makes the most sense in terms of getting more players to play an aggressive style.
@@iamshadowbanned699it would make sense for women’s tennis, which never suffered from the super big serve mania the men’s tour when through in the late 90s early 2000s. In many ways the changes made men’s tennis more appealing but didn’t bring the same benefits to women’s tennis.
Thank you for posting (really), but as I watch the highlights, Graf wins the 1st point, then the 2nd, the 3rd, the 4th, and the 5th before Martina is finally shown winning a point. When Martina wins the first set, you are kind of surprised because, leading up to it in the highlights, Graf is the one winning most of the points. Martina never really got the respect she deserved, career wise, and she now can't even get it in tennis highlights, wow!I Reality check: Martina won 167 career singles titles (all-time best in the Open Era) and 177 pro doubles titles and had tennis' longest singles winning streak ever (74 matches) versus Graf's 107 career singles titles and 11 doubles titles. It's pretty obvious who ranks higher on the the GOAT list between the two of them.
She is an utterly tremendous champion, and given her background, the challenges with her sexuality, changing her nationality and defecting to the U.S etc, the continued and vicious harrassment she received from the press, difficulties securing sponsorships due to being gay, she really did have a lot to be up against. And all this against the backdrop of battling the greatest baseliner of them all, and darling of the media - Evert. That they both gave so very much to women's tennis, carrying its torch til it could be handed over to the likes of Graf, is testament to their mindsets and the special place they held in their hearts for others. Interestingly, it is only in recent years that the physical and emotional difficulties they experienced during their years in tour have come to prominence. Of course we witness on this site those crazed fanatics of successor players who seek to diminish Nav's & Evert's manifest achievements by making commentary regarding their physicality, sexuality, age etc. It's all the stuff of deluded, narcissistic, likely undiagnosed ( and therefore untreated) imbeciles. King, Evert and Navratilova gave us all the women's tour to enjoy. Players, commentators and fans alike have described them both as living legends, and Nav' the GOAT. She achieved so much within the context of those aformentioned interpersonal rivalries, as well as the consistent onslaught of Evert, who showed such tenacity in finally wrestling the No1 spot from her in '85. Nav' lived with the ever present spectre of Evert to sharpen her determination to stay one step ahead. Graf and Seles might have enjoyed a similar rivalry, save for the tragic events which overtook their times; that's a crying shame for true tennis fans everywhere. I've watched commentary in recent years from Davenport, Austin, McEnroe, Wade, Wilander and even King - all of whom openly stated that had Seles not been so tragically removed from the game at that time, Graf could have hoped for 50% of the titles she eventually won thereafter. i think that's a fair assessment. In their rivalry they each needed each other, and they were denied the chance to become even greater than they each were. Navratilova is undoubtedly the greatest athlete in women's tennis - bar none. She changed the game and set the bar for what it currently is - and remember, she and Evert were products of 1950's tennis! Graf, Seles et al were a response to Martina's punishing game. Nav's game was a necessary evolution in her quest to overcome Evert's metronomic baseline abilities. They each made the other much better. All these players described are worthy of celebration and honour. I've listened, in person, to commentators the world over - India to the USA, UK to Japan, all agreeing that her achievements are currently unmatched. I've yet to see convincing contra evidence for this assertion, and given the parlous state of the women's game in our time, I can't imagine anyone coming anywhere close.
@John David Ouch John! I'm an Evert fan - and we're not all bonkers ;-) Every player has their crazed, aggrieved, nutcase following - I loved watching Chrissie but still adore seeing Martina in live action when I can. She is just amazing. I do agree with you though; it's hard to state on RUclips how much you admire one player without being derided by fans of another. I guess RUclips is often just a forum for mouth-running, unthinking sorts, which is a shame for real fans everywhere!
@John David Evert.com is a legend, and you could only wish to be half the tennis enthusiast and knowledgeable and fair minded tennis expert she is. And speaking of trying to rewrite history, 9-9 is not a winning head to head no matter how you spin it, despite Martina having more matches in her (82-87) prime than Graf's (88-96 and 99) and purposely avoiding Graf on slow courts after peak Martina got CRUSHED by baby Graf at the 86 Hamburg event and again at 87 Miami's slower hard courts. And Graf leads 4-2 in slam finals which everyone except you would agree if you want a tiebreaker is a far more important one than 4-5 in slams, especialy when the semi final winner went on to lose the final in 2 of those. Pot. kettle. black. Navratilova is also 7-10 vs Seles, not a winning head to head. And thankfully for your hero Martina, Billie Jean King kept returning to play on bad knees until nearly 40 since if she retired after 79 she would have a winning head to head with 23 year old world #1 Navratilova, despite every single match being from 77-79 when Martina was aged 20 to 23 and King aged 34 to 36. Ouch. Did I mention world #2 Martina aged 22 and 23 took a 6-1, 6-2 loss to 35 year old King on grass and a 6-1, 6-3 loss to 36 year old King on carpet, her favorite surfaces. Even in their 2nd last meeting at Wimbledon 80 the 23 year old world #1 Martina barely beat a 36 year old King 10-8 in the 3rd set after King served for the match. See this is fun ain't it.
@John David Graf leads Navratilova at 3 of the 4 slams, weeks at #1, Year End #1s. So basically all you have for Navratilova is leading in 1 of the 4 most important tournaments and the 5th most important tournament (YEC). Graf leads Navratilova 4-2 in slam finals which is a far more important stat than 5-4 in slams, particularly when the winner of 2 of the 3 semis went on lose the final (aka 4 of 7 times the match was the title decider Graf won). This all despite that they played more matches (10) in Martina's prime of 82-87, than the 8 they played in Graf's prime of 88-96, and Martina purposely went out of her way to avoid Graf on slower courts after baby Graf thumped peak Navratilova super hard at Hamburg 86, and did again on the slow-medium hard courts in Miami in early 87. I also laugh how you trumpet Martina FINALLY getting another win over Graf, her first ever win over prime Graf in 4 years of trying, at the 91 U.S Open, when even that took a whopping 4 years, and took facing Graf in a horrendous year she lost a slam semi to Sanchez 6-2, 6-0 and lost nearly every match she played to Sabatini. I bet Graf aged 30-34 would not have taken a whole 4 years to beat any other fellow all time great in their prime again, not even Serena, the way Martina did Graf. If you want a comparision look at Navratilova's late 80-early 81 results when she had a similar terrible year run of form to 91 Graf, when she lost 3 times to a 15 year old Jaeger (lol), and lost 6-0, 6-0 to Evert, which is about 100 times worse than a single loss to an older still strong Navratilova. Your specific cherry picking of stats to suit your biased arguments and agenda are comical. Anyway neither is the GOAT at this point, QueenRena is whether the snow white tennis fans like it or not. I already know from your combative irrationaly biased posts on any video I see you commenting that you are a bitter Navratilova fanboy who hates the fact many more people believe Serena and Graf are the GOAT than your beloved Martina these days. And with Serena's difficulty gaining the slam record the previously heavily underrated Court is now talked up more than Martina too. But it is just something you will have to deal with. No matter how many posts you make slamming Graf, slamming Evert fans including the goddess who runs the Evert fan site and posts countless wonderful matches and videoes for our enjoyment, slamming the Williams sisters, Martina is no longer the consensus GOAT if she ever was. Deal.
Most people rank GOAT by slam wins first. Serena has even fewer tournament wins than Graf and most rank her as the GOAT above Graf now. It is also funny since you are one of the Seles fanatics who claims Seles is the GOAT (LOL but anyway) and I am sure even you in all your delusions know there is no way in mother fucking hell she was winning 167 tournaments even without the stabbing, so don't be a hypocrite.
STRONG FULL AND ATTRACTIVE GAME...... BOTH SUPER POWER PLAYERS GAME, WHICH IS STAMINA FULL, PRACTICE FULL, TECHNICAL FULL, ENERGY FULL AND POWERFUL........... BUT WINER IS WINER.........
There was never any elegance in her tennis. She was the only one who could play just like that and no one should ever try to play like her. It would easily lead to some serious injury.
I doubt this. Well she was maybe in her teens in 87 but one thing very noticeable is the overused of slice backhand. In today's women's tennis it is very seldom use. Graf would have a hard time against Henin and Serena. Again I am not very familiar with Graf. I saw her defeat of Hingis tho in the mid 90s and she's really good but I think not enough to dominate the women's tennis today.
Not really, Graf only dominated because Seles, her main rival, and the first women's power player, was stabbed. Honestly, Graf would struggle even against the likes of Clijsters or Davenport, let alone Serena.
@@fwiffo1376 fake news. She had an 8-6 record against Davenport and 1-0 vs Clijsters. 1-1 Serena, 3-2 vs Venus, 10-5 vs Seles, 7-2 vs Hingis but again most of those matches were the last couple years of her career and she had been injured for 3 years. Graf was out of this world dominant.
@ Jameschung81. The 1987 U.S. Open Women's Final between Navratilova and Graf was not a great match. Navratilova won it in straight sets and the quality of play was not great, especially in terms of Graf's play. Graf didn't play well and then after the match made the excuse that she had a toothache.
@ Illya Kuryakin. First, Graf DID make the lame excuse of a toothache having caused her loss to Navratilova in the 1987 U.S.Open Women's Final. Second, only an idiot like you would bring up someone's nationality just because you disagree with a comment he or she makes! Third, your referring to Serena Willams in one of your comments as a "fat black hippo" is not only disgusting but racist as well! I am not a Serena Williams fan, but it is totally appalling that anyone would derogatorily refer to her as a "fat black hippo"! You totally undermine any potentially valid points you attempt to make about the game of tennis in your comments with your indefensable, disgusting remarks!
@ Illya Kuryakin. First, your memory is obviously flawed because it is a fact that Graf did mention a toothache after she lost to Navratilova in the '87 U.S. Open Women's Singles Final! Second, you obviously need to consult a little thing called a dictionary! If someone derogatorily called Graf "horseface" that is NOT a racist comment although it is a disgusting comment. And to characterize someone's disgusting comment about Graf's looks as "more racist" than your deplorable, blatantly racist comment about Serena Williams is certifiably ludicrous! Of course trying to have a rational discussion with an irrational racist like you is a total waste of time! Third, exactly what research did you do to come up with the exceedingly dubious statistic that 80% of the "Graf-haters" are American? You obviously hate Americans for no rational reason at all. Of course hatred is an irrational and unhealthy emotion in the first place.
Michael Barlow Thank you for really taking your time out to express how you really feel about my thought towards this GREAT CLASSIC MATCH. We definitely need less human kind like you so there will be peace.
Baby Steffi had destroyed Navratilova already twice before: In May 1986 as a 16-year-old she humiliated a 29-year-old Martina with 62 63 in Berlin. And in March 1987 a 17-year-old Steffi schooled a 30-year-old Martina with 63 62 in Key Biscayne.
Illya Kuryakin Steffi has the youth advantage that’s for sure. Navratilova past 1987 was not as fast and lost speed from her serve. Plus mentally, Martina’s also dwindled as she got older. Proof of fact: Martina only managed to beat Steffi twice (US Open 1991 & Tokyo Indoors 1993) when Martina was clearly older, past her prime. Steffi in the meantime was already at her peak.
@Illya Kuryakin Boy Oh Boy, you really are a Huge Steffi Graf fan! OMG, No one can say anything negative at all or even a little tiny bit against your precious Steffi Graf. She can't do No wrong & she was definirely the greatest women's player to ever hit a tennis ball. Ok, I get it & everybody here on RUclips gets it. You love her. I dunno about you, but in my country that kind of behaviour gets you a community mental health nurse assigned as a minimum ^^
@Ilya Kuryakin The mmm ok Steffi with the nonexistent back hand would be no where near her final records if Seles was not stubbed (by a Graff fan who did not even do one day in prison btw) Seles was wiping the floor with her by the age of 19 she won 6 slams including 3 (out of 4 finals) from Graff .. Seles knew how to beat Graff and Im sure that she would have continued and because that lunatic knew that he decided to take her out, Graff will always have that shadow over her carrier
The all time rankings go: 1. Serena --------------------huge gap--------------------------- 2. Graf 3. Court 4. Lenglen/Wills tie 6. Evert/Navratilova tie (Evert better overall career in singles, but Martina has doubles success too) 8. Connolly (would be GOAT without her horse accident or 2nd to GOATrena) 9. King 10. @@thoukisth Graff and carrier aren't even words. You can't expect anyone to take you seriously when you can't even speak proper English. Boy Steffi changed the woman's game enormously with power, and the era of moving the ball around and waiting for your opponent to make a mistake was over.
Now could you imagine how many more Grand Slam titles Martina would of had playing mixed with McEnroe they both were Amazing Doubles players .I do not think anyone would of stopped them they would of had at least 12 more Slams. Martina had great hands she wanted this match. You could also see Steffi was up next to take over.Plus it was Amazing to see Steffi playing points with a ball in her hand great balance and control.
Yes!! This is not pointed out by many. Playing the point with the second ball in your hand (it means your first serve was good), was a bit more common with the older eras, and Steffi was one of the last to do that, even being one of the very few moder era players to that. Why do that? I have no idea. It doesn't make sense, and isn't practical. But players such as Steffi did that. She stopped holding two balls at first serve, sometime after she achieved her Golden Slam.
Slowing the game down is an art that most players (men included) have not mastered these days. Look at Federer. His game is undoubtedly "softer" than those of the other guys, yet he reigns surpreme as the best of his generation.
@@TheDiana1 I know that. There's no need to be so petty. My point was that people NOW complain about the slow courts of today, but they played much slower back in these days.
Actually this was a VERY decent defeat handshakes by Graf's standards! I know that doesn't say much but it's true. There are other matches she lost when she wouldn't even look at her opponent during the handshake and Martina was at the receiving end of that too.
@Max E I don't get what you're trying to say. Did you mean it's NOT as bad as threatening to kill a kinswoman? You are obviously referring to Serena, whom I don't care for as a person. I think threatening a lineswoman is worse than not looking at your opponent during the handshake but not having the courtesy to look at your opponent during the handshake is quite gangster to me.

@@carrerau7138Bingo. Never were there such ones like the Williams. Totally untennis, not exemplifying the tennis conduct and culture. Just out of place. That's actually one of her better handshakes from this era. She had much worse handshakes than this when she lost, especially to Martina in her early career.

And 6 of her last 6 matches against Martina. There is still a lot of bitterness among certain American tennis fans because of this!
She shook Martina's hand and even smiled at her. Where's the problem? And even if Steffi didn't smile at her, a handshake was just a procedure at that time. These days, it's all about putting on a superficial display.

She volleyed as well as Billie Jean King but with much more aggression.
You also need to remember that Graf was a totally new beast, attacking so hard from the baseline was new. Her game was an evolution, and played at a GOAT level, and yet martinas game had enough scope to handle it.

Theim and Medvedev are good, but like that's the future.

Martina may not have won a calendar slam but she held six slams in a row in 1983-84
@GoTeam there was all kinds of controversy about Martina's run.
And Martina Navratilova did what NO player has ever been able to do. Win 75 or 76 str8 matches w/o a loss. That's dominance!
@Ilya Kuryakin But Steffi Graf had no real competition. Weak era champ.

@coffeeinthemorning I believe Martina switched to the same Dunlop 200G because she wanted the same power as Steffi Graf. But Steffi Graf's forehand power didn't come from the Dunlop racquet, it was just the way she struck (stroked) the ball.

This was the last dominant year for Martina. After this graf just changed gears and along with seles dominated the sport for the next decade.
@Max E In 1987 she still won 2 Grand Slams, and at the US Open also won doubles and mixed.
Martina‘s dominance ended in 1986.
@tobiasisback4605 That's only because Martina avoided Steffi on slower surfaces.
After her loss to 17-year-old Steffi at the FO 87 they played 10 more matches:
- 3 on grass
- 4 on carpet
- 3 on (fast) USO hard courts.
Still Steffi won 6 of those 10 matches.
That is Steffi's beauty - she was at least top three in the world on every surface.
And that makes her the GOAT according to most fans and experts.
@tobiasisback4605
1) Steffi has the best winning percentage on CARPET in the open era.

Steffi played far worse in 1991 than in 1989.
So did Martina.
I wonder if raising the net a few inches would bring the S&V game back. Such a beautiful contrast of baseliners and volleyers pre 2000.
I think speeding up the courts would bring some measure of serve and volleying back in tennis.
In many ways the changes made men’s tennis more appealing but didn’t bring the same benefits to women’s tennis.

wow- how the hell did Martina win this in straight sets.... most just saw Graf winners.
I forgot how good Steffi Graf was because Martina was amazing as well but Steffi was someone I Loved watching her play
Its funny how plain and simple the awarding was...
10:00- Graf racket flip.
Steffi topspin one handed backhand is beautiful. Why it is dissapear in her 90s career
Martina's hair is kinda like Lendl's. The Guess the mullet was big for Czech players in the 80's
STRONG FULL AND ATTRACTIVE GAME......
BOTH SUPER POWER PLAYERS GAME, WHICH IS STAMINA FULL, PRACTICE FULL, TECHNICAL FULL, ENERGY FULL AND POWERFUL...........
BUT WINER IS WINER.........
Steffi playing style is similar to Roger Federer so much elegance.
May be Fed is inspired by her .. styles r similar and few shots u just can’t think of anyone else but federer
There was never any elegance in her tennis. She was the only one who could play just like that and no one should ever try to play like her. It would easily lead to some serious injury.
tq IIIya
For sure steffi would dominate todays game using the new strings and racquets.
Gentian Mullaj The fact she lost so many of those matches shows she wouldn’t dominate, but she’d be a top player.
@@fwiffo1376 😂😂
Compare this to Bianca Andreescu vs Taylor Townsend @ US Open 2019 R4 and the difference is mind blowing. The girls of 2019 have so much more power!
GoTeam - That for sure, but Bianca literally is a powehouse lashing out in full fury. These 2 seem to have quite slower raquet head speeds.
And they have so much less finesse. And their understanding of strategy is so much worse!
And Max Verstappen is so much faster than Ayrton Senna ever was!
Great match. Another classic.
Illya Kuryakin something is wrong with him 😂.
After this year Steffi Graf started winning against Martina
Baby Steffi had destroyed Navratilova already twice before:
In May 1986 as a 16-year-old she humiliated a 29-year-old Martina with 62 63 in Berlin.
And in March 1987 a 17-year-old Steffi schooled a 30-year-old Martina with 63 62 in Key Biscayne.
Steffi was no match against Martina's Ziggy Stardust hairdo that day.
Even though the highlights seem biased in favor of Graf.
I love the mullet. Hot.
As someone said about Martina "It was a shame she retired when she did, just as she was starting to get a decent haircut."
Martina is 13 years older than Steffi!
@Illya Kuryakin And Martina was almost 13 years older than Steffi.
So, I'm just going to stay away from any post I see your name. Especially, if it's a Steffi Graf post.

Navratilova is the GOAT
@Ilya Kuryakin The mmm ok Steffi with the nonexistent back hand would be no where near her final records if Seles was not stubbed (by a Graff fan who did not even do one day in prison btw) Seles was wiping the floor with her by the age of 19 she won 6 slams including 3 (out of 4 finals) from Graff .. Seles knew how to beat Graff and Im sure that she would have continued and because that lunatic knew that he decided to take her out, Graff will always have that shadow over her carrier
The all time rankings go:
1. Serena
--------------------huge gap---------------------------
2. Graf
3. Court
4. Lenglen/Wills tie
6. Evert/Navratilova tie (Evert better overall career in singles, but Martina has doubles success too)
8. Connolly (would be GOAT without her horse accident or 2nd to GOATrena)
9. King
10. Venus, Seles, Henin, or Gibson
@@thoukisth Graff and carrier aren't even words. You can't expect anyone to take you seriously when you can't even speak proper English. @Max E yes, graf is classiest than putinseva and ostapenko.
@Max E you're still dreaming. Watch her videos where she loses then tell yourself she is full of grace 🤣

People talk about courts being slow now, but this is almost like slow motion!
Andrew Mark, this was 32 years ago when they didn't have the technology or the power they have nowadays.....DUH LOL!!!.
Slowing the game down is an art that most players (men included) have not mastered these days.
Look at Federer. His game is undoubtedly "softer" than those of the other guys, yet he reigns surpreme as the best of his generation.

Cold handshake again from Steffi graf
