This was one of those pivotal early grand slam matches that Gaby really had a chance to win. Martina was rattled and bothered by the conditions. Unfortunately, Sabatini's lack of "killer instinct" prevented a win here.
Great summary! Looking at Gaby's record against her main rivals in grand slams ( the people she'd have to overtake to get to #1, Graf, Navratilova, Seles, Evert) she only ever won once, in the 1990 US Open final.
Absolutely spot on. I wish Gaby played with the same confident arrogance that Graf, Seles, Navratilova, and Evert played with. Even Sanchez-Vicario. She could have dominated. She has shown she can beat any of them when her mind is in the right space but she crumbled in the large majority of big occasions. She apparently didn't really cherish the spotlight, possibly came about early on b/c of her lack of English, and never really worked out of it. But she still had an amazing career and she has no regrets, that's what's important.
