- I have been asked to speak about Jeff Buckley by a lot of you who watch this channel. Today, I'm going to just that. I'm specifically going to react to his song "Lilac Wine". He was incredible singer, one of the best. In some ways, he changed music.

When I think of Jeff I just feel an aching, profound sadness. Jeff is one of the all time greats and in many ways I believe that the music industry never recovered from his loss. He was that massive of a talent. A voice touched by God.
He was he is the best singer and guitarist for all times.
Only 4 years I listening him and cant stop.Every day.Alwas differet but consistent.Unique.
“Everybody here wants you” is also an incredible song - sexy, atmospheric, completely incapsulates that anticipatory moment of arriving somewhere for the night and only wanting to spend the rest of it with one person

Heart ripping fact: It was Chris Cornell who helped put Sketches together with Jeff’s mom, Mary. Also, Chris made an incredible tribute song for him called “Wave Goodbye.” It’s so hard for me to listen to it without being destroyed though. 💜
His performance of 'Grace' on the BBC Late Show is one of the greatest musical displays any human has accomplished.

Jeff was the embodiment of what a shooting star is. He is gone too soon, but god did he shine bright in his short time among us. I have listened to Grace too many times to keep count but i can't get tired of it.

I was fortunate to see Jeff Buckley play a few times. I once saw him soundcheck in a small venue in Melbourne, Australia and he walked with his guitar over to the bar to serenade the the bar girl setting up for her shift. He was so charismatic and witty.

"Our Last Goodbye" is one of the most incredibly composed songs of all time, imo. It has 4 changes, there is no chorus, it's constantly evolving and progressing...and yet it's easily capable of hooking you in. And every verse change hits you harder and harder emotionally. JB's voice was absolutely epic. I discovered him when I was getting into The Darkness, Muse, Radiohead, et al and that's when I came across "Our Last Goodbye" and I just stopped dead in my tracks. Brilliant. Loved seeing it covered during the tribute concert, too.
A lovely summary of a beautiful song. You and I have walked similar musical journeys my friend. 😊
Shout out to Violet Grohl the other week for covering Last Goodbye and Grace because she smashed it and standing there in the audience had me on the verge of tears

His voice on the Corpus Christi Carol track is hauntingly beautiful. I still feel sad when I think of how he died so young and what beautiful music he would have continued to make had he lived. He was a true original :( ❤
Saw him at Glastonbury Festival. I was walking from one stage to another and passed the stage he was plying on, never heard of him before but was instantly pulled in by him, what an incredible singer, been a massive fan ever since. One of the best moments of my life I will always cherish that can never be repeated.
That sounds amazing. One of my biggest regrets was that I didn't see him when I was at Glastonbury in 1995. I was aware of him but didn't really know his music so didn't go and check him out.
Muse (Matt Bellamy) has since admitted (really...acknowledged) that he got his vocals from Jeff. He also now owns Jeff's telecaster.
Matt never denied that Jeff was a huge inspiration from him. There are plenty of videos from 1999 when they released their first album where Matt credits Jeff Buckley for that. I think what Justin is thinking of here is how Matt, to deny the Radiohead ripoff- comments, would say that both him and Thom got their vocal inspiration from Buckley, and that's why they sounded similar.
_HE_ bought the Tele? It only went for $7k after Jeff's mate who ended up with them was too skint not to sell it. I saw it on sale in New York not that long ago. If Bellamy was the buyer he's an even bugger twat for not giving him more money.
This is kind of upsetting. That guitar should be in the hands of someone who loved Jeff as deeply as Jeff loved that Tele.
Hauntingly beautiful. I wrote my dissertation on the album 'Grace'. I find it so unbelievably emotional that I struggle to listen to the album in full now. Such an immeasurable tragedy his death was. So much untapped potential. He was just too good for this world. His vocal range and genre range on the album is unreal. From the gentle 'lilac wine' to the thunderous 'eternal life', not to mention the ethereal 'dream brother'. Once in a century talent. Please do more analysis of him Justin! That would be amazing!

I am the same, I can barely listen to Grace now because it is so emotional to me and because discovering him changed everything for me and all my friends. I first heard him on tv in 1994 and went out and bought the album the next day - got to see him live in 1995. Grace and his voice represents so much and such a part of my history, it would take days to fully explain.

I think his falsetto and head voice had so many common notes, the same with his chest and head voices, his transitions were so unbelievably effortless.

Jeff Buckley is to Vocals, as Jimi Hendrix is to Guitars. They are the masters. I was surprised you didn't mention how Violet Grohl covered Buckley songs (very well) at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute.
That was a tough summer losing Buckley. What treasure his album remains and what a talent we lost.
The man sang Corpus Christi Carol on a modern music album and it:
1. Doesn't sound out of place.
2. Sounds so much more than 1 man singing a song that is around 500 years old.
3. Never fails to send a shiver down my spine.
He was a truly unique talent that will continue to influence and be copied for many years to come.

As incredible as Corpus Christi Carol is (and it really is incredible), his performance of Dido’s Lament from Meltdown Festival in 1995 is his greatest vocal performance IMO. The only recording of it is an audience recording that has been “remastered” to make it as listenable as possible:

Grace is one of my all time favorite albums. The world was robbed when he passed away.

When I heard that he had passed I cried. I was shocked at my own emotions. Amazing singer and his band deserve more credit.

I discovered him in 2002 and I was still late. 😢 Although you could argue it’s never too late to discover great music.
Especially his live recordings show how great he was, because live he just fooled around with songs and by doing so topping the studio versions. Astounding singer and superb guitar player as well.

Dream Brother live in Chicago is a crazy rendition of his song. His vocal chops in that live is insane. That whole live is a mind altering experience.

When I was younger I went into a record shop in Glasgow intent to randomly pick a record as I was bored with music at the time. It was Grace and that night I never slept for listening to it on repeat enthralled. A masterpiece. For me the best albums (not in order) Grace, ok computer, the bends, definitely maybe, Appetite for destruction, Mosley shores. All bring back my youth 😭🤣

Jeff Buckley changed my life, and I will never forget the day I heard that he had died. I refused to believe it. It was such a gut punch for my generation to lose such a phenomenal talent. Grace is my #1 desert island disc.

The band I was in opened for him once. in a small club He was a strange cat, but unbelievably sweet, as was his band. HIs band had just gotten an endorsement deal that week, so they were all playing identical amps and guitars. It was great.

@@ronbock8291 thanks...I'm a Jeff historian so I can never resist asking questions when interested haha...out of his 4 Toronto shows with the band, I can't say I recall hearing one of them being there (unless Albert's Hall, Trinity Church or Dansforth Music Hall are on top of that venue), nor of him getting any endorsement deal, but it's something new for me to look into, so thanks again ☺
Vocally incredible; and Lover You Should’ve Come Over is, in my opinion, lyrically the greatest song ever written about the feeling of what it is to lose love.
Would be interesting to hear Justin’s thoughts on James Blake? I think has almost equally impressive vocal range, and really broad production styles!

Just notice this after many years, but some similarities between Jeff’s voice and Roy Orbison’s. Roy could seamlessly go from lower to higher registers with the same tone and volume.
See I got Freddie Mercury as well when he hit certain notes , especially when he moved up a scale , but now you have said orbison I can hear it on the lower tones
I guess when you have a great voice and sing in that style there are not many you can aliken him to, only the legends who possess that gift
I do enjoy radiohead , one of my favourite songs ever is high and dry , but whilst Thom yorke may have took inspiration I don't think his voice is as good , iguess if taking inspiration meant high and dry was made then who am I to argue otherwise
So, so much that you can say about Buckley. You’ve focussed on the incredible voice here but as guitarist, his use of dynamics instead of over reliance on pedals, the stripped bare, emotional honesty of his lyrics. My god! What a talent he was. I didn’t really discover him until the early 2000s and it still saddens me that he’s gone.
Jeff was so amazing and taken way too soon. "or am I just going crazy?" always gives me goosebumps in this song. Would love a top to bottom bangers episode for Grace. Every song on the album is superb in it's own way. There's a brilliant acoustic gig at Sproul Plaza, Berkeley on RUclips that's worth checking out.
I was living in a student dorm when Grace came out, and luckily for my fellow squatters, I had some good headphones, because that album stayed in my CD player for months. The memories that this music brings back...

I saw Jeffrey live at Queen's Hall in Edinburgh in 95, was stood straight in front of him in the front row. One gig I could never forget, truly exceptional.

@@MrCarthus cool. Mine was definitely Shrek! I know it’s Rufus Wainwright in the film but it was enough to spark my curiosity so I ended up buying Grace whilst at uni and up until my last car (as it had Bluetooth etc no CD) was the only CD to never leave my car.

Jeff was a fellow student at Fullerton College, next to Anaheim, California where he grew up. Fullerton is the home of Fender guitars, and at the Fullerton Museum there is a permanent Fender exhibit. His family donated all of the first models, prototypes, the other electronics he made, some famous guitars, stories about the guitars, a gift shop of Fender gear, etc. If you’re ever in the LA area you should check it out. It’s about 25 miles from Hollywood. BTW Jeff Buckley was truly amazing, I think “Corpus Christi Carol”, a song from the 1500s, shows his falsetto magic. It gives me shivers.
My Jeff Buckley story...around 1997-98, I worked in an office in Irvine, CA, and I would occasionally chat up with this lovely lady named Mary. I told her I played music, and she told me her son recorded music, and the following day she gave me a couple CDs Grace and a live EP by Jeff.

Hey Justin, so glad you did a video on the great Jeff Buckley. My sister introduced me to his music about twenty years ago but after Violet Grohl's performance I recently got reacquainted. His voice especially in some songs like Grace and Lover you should have come over are incredible but his guitar playing also blows my mind. I would go as far as saying he was a musical genius in the grunge era.
The best of the very best and his influence lives on.
Thank you Justin, I hope future episode/s on this genius will include some of his guitar playing too, Jeff was undoubtedly flawless vocally, but some of his chops, tunings and chord voicings are underrated and a lot trickier than expected.
What often goes unnoticed with Jeff Buckley is his guitar playing,he was a phenomenal guitar player and composer,and his band was damn good,complemented him so well….Mick Grøndahl and Matt Johnson were essential to the grace album…as much as Buckley….
Just my opinion but... Jeff Buckley is one of the most underrated artists of a generation. One of many on a list of those who died too young. I am always amazed how many people I meet that have never heard his music. I get very excited to think of what that person will experience when they hear him for the first time.
I don't think he's underrated at all. He's pretty universally acknowledged as one of the greatest singers and songwriters who ever lived and was even known as such at the time. I run into people in their 20's *now* who listen to "Grace".

I don’t know much about Jeff Buckley, but of the many many versions of “Hallelujah” I’ve heard over the years, Jeff’s version is by far my favourite. So soulful and impassioned, sorrowful and simply beautiful 🥹
It’s the definitive version imo.
Pick up a copy of Grace, lock yourself away for an hour and listen to it on some headphones. You won't regret it.

Jeff’s 1983 Telecaster was offered for sale years ago. It really should be in a museum for the amount of sheer genius that was written & recorded on that instrument.

Jeff Buckley, as a silly 20 something, seeing him live in San Francisco(at Slim's), I felt overwhelmed and literally brought a tear or many to my eyes with absolute musical enrapture. Jeff Buckley, live was something other worldly, and changed the way I in this world heard and saw music. I listen to(and turn many onto), Jeff Buckley regularly, as much as I listen to Suede. Next
I love Suede. Brett Anderson and Jeff both seem to have that very quiet yet charismatic quality about them. Bernard Butler comes close to Jeff on guitar though

Justin, brilliant you are bringing the work of Jeff into the broader conversation,,,, you should really get your ears around Jeff signing with Liz Fraser of The Cocteau Twins,, All Flowers in Time Bend Toward the Sun....it would bring a tear from a glass eye. I often go to it and it is a joy-filled thing.

The first time I heard Grace (the album), I was overwhelmed. Jeff had taken the best parts of the music I loved, synthesized them into incredible pop/rock songs, and performed those songs in a way that no one else could. To think that he released that music within a couple of years of revealing himself (as a singer) to the public... there was so much within his reach. He could have gone in any number of different directions, from crooner to art-rock to Cooder-esque ambassador to music of other cultures. It's no wonder he struggled to write and record the follow-up: he was didn't yet know who he was becoming. That's what I take from Sketches: that he recorded an entire album and then decided it wasn't representative of who he wanted to be, so he kept writing. On the strength of some of the demos, I think he would have continued to overwhelm us. RIP.
My world changed for the better when I first listened to Grace and then I discovered Live at the Sin-e and my mind was blown again (his cover of Dylan's If you see her say hello, is magical). Great stuff Justin👌

I was working on Lilac Wine yesterday (gonna upload a cover of it soon), but sent one of the takes to my friend who introduced me to Jeff Buckley and Grace. We remember those who show us genius and beauty :)
Grace is one incredible piece of work. I never tire of listening to it. Tragic to have lost him after just one album.
I know it's not a proper album but Sketches for my sweetheart the drunk isn't too shabby. The sky is a landfill is fabulous. He even manages to make Peter Gabriel era Genesis sound great!

Jeff died 3 days after I was born in May of 97. I discovered his music when I was 14 via the incomparable Grace LP and became utterly obsessed. His gift for arrangement and the elasticity of his vocal range were simply second to none. Then I got ahold of the Live at Sin-e album and got into so many fantastic artists he covered. Nina Simone, The Smiths, Leonard Cohen, Dylan, Van Morrison, etc.. He definitely changed my life with his music and I truly believe he was poised to change the rock landscape for the better. Very few losses in the world of music like the loss of Jeff Buckley. I'm 26 now and his music still matters to me. Maybe even more than it did when I was 14. Thanks for exposing even more people to his music, Justin. The work you do on this channel is important and educational.
