I rarely comment... but Jeff and I were friends, along with Rufus Wainwright in New York at the time... He really was a lovely person - one of those friends you could love on and appreciate without fear - truly exposed heart on the sleeve human - someone you'd never want to leave your life - fun, get into trouble, but sincere sweet and kind. Its been so many years and I miss him so much. To have a friend so talented and that you are proud of was a true gift. Precious. Its been like twenty years and I'm compelled to comment. We had honest good fun together and I'll miss him forever. Rick, your channel is awesome. I wish you and your family the very best. Ugh, this human existence can be really trying.
What was Jeff like as a person? Like, behind all the enigma, what was he like just as a guy?
@@D4n1t0o I find it very odd to comment again. I'm close to 50 now... Jeff I think was a couple years older than me... what was he like as just a guy? Not typical.. I used to think most people were entertainers/artsy but just held back or subdued - but as time as gone by I have come to understand that there are a lot of 'average normal non creative oblivious blah' men out there. He was not. He was sensitive, and aware of his surroundings - he paid attention to things and those around him - we were very similar and that's why when together which was not very often we got along like we never parted. He wasn't picky about most stuff, he was compassionate, yet he was a perfectionist - and a stickler for justice. Noticing people doing other people wrong brought out a sense of anger? Intolerant of others behaving inconsiderate perhaps? Goofy as hell at times, but serious as hell too - it's like we live on a scale - the goofier you are equally as serious you can be. We were young. We were good looking. There was lots of attention and it was easy to indulge but at the heart of it all there was a need to pony up and perform and create something good. At the heart of it all, I'd say the both of us just wanted to really fall in love and be loved and express our talents - but the business side of things isn't healthy, and there was a conflict there which caused grief. Ugh, let's just say his personality was inspiring and you'd like to be around - yeah, troubled emotional artist with heart ache and such, but always encouraged you that you can do better and be better... positive to be around.
@@bashjustbash4475 Thanks for this insight. I'm sure it's awkward to express in a public forum, but that's really neat to know.
❤️❤️
He seems very kind. I’m sure he is looking on and watching over u
Hold on to your memories. It's an unjust universe, sometimes, not always 💗
One could only imagine where Jeff would have went musically...pure genius.
Wonder if there might have been a collaboration with Plant/Page/Jones....
His 2nd album would’ve been something of a back in nyc kinda sound. U can hear he’s been experimenting a lot with those synth sounds besides a couple of soul songs on that album.. assuming those r the materials
The silver lining in this type of genius leaving us early is that we are inspired to imagine where it would have lead to and realize it ourselves through that inspiration. A passing of the torch of sorts to finish what seems unfinished. Sort of like his reference to Muse near the end of this video. Great stuff though, definitely would love to have heard what he would have done and still very inspiring.
@@jingyitay6179 I’m not so sure about that. Jeff Buckley had to leave NY and go down south to write the follow up to Grace, and he did just that. It took him a while to get going and he was able to accomplish a demo of sorts. The night before the band was to arrive is when Jeff walked into the murky river, boots and all, and never returned.
Yes. Jeff traveled to Memphis to write new material and rework the structure of a handful of previously written/recorded/rehearsed songs (e.g. Witches' Rave, Moodswing Whiskey, I Know We Could Be So Happy Baby) after he was dissatisfied with the Verlaine sessions from late '96 and early '97. His last performance in NYC at Arlene's Grocery shows that he was messing around with the arrangement/lyrics of some of those songs from the Verlaine sessions (The Sky Is A Landfill, Nightmare By The Sea, Witches' Rave, Vancouver).

Beato casually mentions he got to see Buckley play all the time at Sin-é and meet him. Incredible!
I met Jeff a couple times too. He was as sweet an angel as you'd expect.
@@Craig-dv3ji Cool!!
Right?!! I'm like, omg!! Who can say that?? That's incredible! Wish he'd share a more in-depth storytime.
I cried more for Jeff Buckley than I cried for Kurt Cobain a few years before. In the south of France were I was from, Jeff Buckley's songs were almost confidential, but he surely sang the soundtrack of my own teenage years. Never managed to see him perform in Paris, one of my biggest regrets.
"meeting Jeff Buckley..." ooooooooooooh boy
*Mind Blown again and again on this channel*
Yea.. in another video Rick said "I actually used to be a big band conductor myself..." and I was like "goddamn, Rick"

FINALLY someone is talking about this song. Thank you.
YES !!!
It is my favorite of Jeff's
I was surprised!
also my fave Buckley tune...every time I play it, I put it on loop because it does not satiate me.....it could play another 10 minutes and still be nowhere near finished...it is eternal.
“Everybody Here Wants You” is so simple, yet never gets old.
Vancouver is fucking amazing. It's not just one of my fav Jeff Buckley songs, it's one of my fav songs ever. Incredible.
"Wanna know where Muse got their ideas from?" PERFECT
radiohead also btw
the Muse of Muse
EpicStrawberries Thom York’s said in an interview that they went to see Jeff Buckley play while they were recording The Bends and went straight back to the studio that night to track his vocal for Fake Plastic Trees. He said seeing Jeff gave him the inspiration and courage to really go for it with the falsetto.
@@peterfleming1517 courage is right. Jeff Buckley had that in spades. And Thom too, of course.
A bit of London Suede too!
Irony. I heard Jeff's dad Tim play in a small club in Vancouver in about 1975. A fond memory from my youth. Really sad that both father and son died way way too young. Both were unique musicians and voices.
And, sadly, barely knew one another.
His Dad sounded like a real peach of a guy 🙄
bad father apparently
I never relate one to the other. I find it disrespectful, don't know why
@@CICORIA977 - I agree. And we never know what others have gone through in their lives that have shaped them, so why judge other people's relationships harshly when we know little to nothing about them. I wish both had lived to create more of their unique music.
I can't read notes, I don't understand chords and I don't play any instrument, yet I have to watch all your videos. They make me appreciate music in a totally new way.
Same here I've been over a thousand gigs and still cant play a note but I know what sounds good to me
You’re not alone.
That's why we pay to see em because we cant do it ourselves haha
A lot of the best musicians out there couldn't/can't read music either. In fact you could say they're almost 'better' musicians because they do it all naturally by ear, and 'feel' the music rather than thinking about chord structures etc.
Ditto
I was living in Austin, Tx in the early 90’s. A friend I worked with asked me to go with him to check out this songwriter at Waterloo Records. My friend had a mullet and I had my doubts.. lol. Waterloo gave you up to three free beers from a keg inside the record shop. I was thumbing through cds while the three piece band setup and had Captain Beefheart’s “Safe as Milk” in my hands when they kicked into “last goodbye” and my jaw hit the floor. I’m getting chills thinking about it. I couldn’t believe how good they were. I bought Grace and shook Jeff’s hand and told him I just couldn’t believe it. We spoke for about 30 seconds face to face, super cool dude.
Vancouver is my favorite track on sweetheart! And I’ll say this, “Everybody here wants you” is one of the sexiest tunes ever written man. I’ve got some unique chords I’ve found on guitar, me and my buds call them the Buckley chords. LOL. Cheers.
An interesting and perhaps not super well-known fact about the Rickenbacker 12-string Jeff Buckley used on this song (and many others): it was given to Chris Cornell by Jeff's mother, as a thank-you gesture for Cornell acting as a buffer (and for "quality control") between Buckley's family and Columbia, as they were putting together Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk.
THANK YOU FOR THIS "Deep Cuts" Rick Beato!
I did not know this. Thanks! A dear friend turned me on to Jeff around '02. I'm usually late to the party. I put Grace in my car's disk player and listened to it exclusively for 4 years never skipping a track. I'm a sponge for all things Buckley. I can't wait to see this video (I'm at work). Thanks Dale for the tidbit and Rick for being awesome yet again.
@@drewepton The best! Oddly, I too got set straight a bit late... Around 1998? I'd heard of him, crazily, because a friend of mine went to high school with him... And she even invited me to a show of his at the American Legion Hall back in... 1995, or something? But I didn't go, because I was way more into wacky stuff... and I honestly didn't know anything about him at all (hadn't heard a note). Then waaaay later, I read that he'd passed... and found the two discs set of Sketches, thinking it was actually a greatest hits collection, LOL. I bought it, and was forever changed.
I remember you sharing this story, Dale! What a trip.
@@drewepton I know 2 friends of his from high school that attended this show, so I wonder if your friend knows them too...
@daleturner can you elaborate on this story? Chris Cornell, also gone too soon, worked on Sketches? How so? I'm intrigued. Thx for sharing.
Rick can you do another Jeff song? Lover you should have come over is lyrically one of the best songs written please please do it :) you're educating old and young (like me 22) keep up the good work

Man, you must have been born after he died...I feel so old :D
A year later and did Rick ever do this song?
LYSHCO is pure genius.
Jeff Buckley is, to me, the most stunning musician of the last fifty years
I got to see Jeff play at Barristers in Memphis just a couple of weeks before he died. Before he played, I had the good fortune to meet him and talk over beers for a few minutes. Such a lovely, approachable, genuine person. And then he went on stage and just worked through some ideas he had, going off in different directions as the mood struck him. It was truly a unique experience. I was absolutely devastated when he died and I still have a hard time listening to any of his music without choking up. Watching you geek out in this video brought a huge smile to my face. Thanks, Rick.
@Tom Dixon. You’re incredibly fortunate to have seen him in Memphis. Apparently there is so audio from these shows, but it has never surfaced.
The thing I like about Jeff's music is it's lack of basic genre. He produced relatively little (sadly), but of what there is, there's such breadth, especially on the Grace album.
every few months i drop into the buckley universe and man, it is something, a feeling i cannot find anywhere else...
"Everybody Here Wants You" - Amazing Track from Jeff R.I.P. - gone waaaay to soon. Super Talent.
One of THE most beautiful songs of all time.

You should look lover you should've come over
@@luismorales6351
Lover You Should Have Come Over is one of the most brilliant songs I’ve ever heard in fact it was the first song of Jeff’s I heard and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, I’m new to him, I looked him up and learned he was dead and damm.
There's an aussie equivalent of the bbc. Its called abc. They have an alternative radio station called Triple J. Every yr they have a poll on the top 100 songs of the yr called the Hottest 100. And every so often they have the hottest 100 of all time. Every SINGLE time theyve done that there's been at least 3 jeff buckley songs:
Last Goodbye
Lover, You Should've Come Over
Grace
Theyve appeared all 4 times
Hallelujah has appeared once. At #3
Smells Like Teen Spirit has been #1 every time.
And last goodbye has been in the top 10 every single time.
The other 2 have been in.the bottom 50. Personally, i think its a fair representation even though hallelujah is my alltime favourite song
A brilliant composer in his own right, but immortalized by a cover of someone else's song, just like what happened to Sinéad O'Connor. Though it is a testament to what a fantastic vocalist he was, as well as O'Connor, it's also kind of sad.
Sorry to be 'that guy' but I was extremely fortunate to hear Jeff and his band play this song live on their final tour in early 1996, complete with lyrics after they had previously played it for months in concert instrumentally. Jeff must have really loved the song to have developed it that way over such a long time. They finished with Vancouver and a typically epic Kanga-Roo by Big Star, it was probably the best concert I've ever experienced.
"Weird Theramin part" lol
Is there any other kind?
True!!!!!!!
Listen to Clara Rockmore and get back to us on that...
I suggest listening to "Paradis" by Wintergatan
I think it's actually a slide playing above pick ups
Spent the best part of two decades thinking it was a slide guitar. 🤷♂️
Love how you talk about your mixed feelings about listening to the album at all because of concerns that these weren't songs Jeff would have wanted anybody to hear. That's a real conflict for me for posthumous releases. Agree with you about this one - this song deserved to be heard.
Same....
After all these years, I still can't bring myself to listen to the album.
Grace spoiled it for me. In my mind, this is and will always be one of the most perfect albums. A pouring of emotion. I cannot fault it - every song feels like we have been given 100% access to a young Jeff Buckley, his life, his loves his deepest feelings.
Anything after, especially released without his final mark of approval, feels like it would be someone else's vision.
But I am grateful to have watched this video, and the insight into this song. I might soften today and finally seek out the album.
I was just listening to this the other day and thought damn this is a brilliant song. I used to hang with Matt Johnson back when he was living in Brooklyn. Super nice guy. This was when he was playing in Rufus Wainwright’s band. I first met him at the Time Cafe in Manhattan years ago when I checked out a show there with a producer friend, Kieran Kelly. Matt talked about Jeff and that time period very openly, but he definitely viewed those days with awkwardness and in his words “painful times”. I think these days he thinks of those days more fondly. He also mentioned he was supposed to tour with Chris Cornell for the Carry On album (I think Gary Lucas payed guitar on it). A few years later he ended up recording with Angus and Julie Stone at Kieran’s studio. Kieran knew Matt and Jeff a bit back when he was living in New Orleans (where he’s from). Kieran once told me Jeff told him how much Shudder to Think made him jealous. Kieran also ended up producing Matt Johnson’s first solo album which is really good. Matt’s a great guitarist. I think he’s living in LA now cause he’s doing more session work these days and to be closer to his son.
Gary Lucas is a great player. Love the stuff he did with Captain Beefheart.
Ummmm we need more details on what he meant by awkward and painful. You can't just end the story there. lol.
I can definitely hear a Shudder to Think influence in the vocal melody of "Vancouver".
rdsx463724 I didn’t prod him too much. I think towards the end the band was a bit dysfunctional at times. This was also the first time these NYC guys experienced that level of success. I’m sure people that knew the guys well back then would know better. I know from mutual friends that Jeff started to dislike Matt’s playing towards the end for whatever reason. I think he wanted a sloppier drummer from what I understand. Matt’s a powerhouse of course, he’s drummed for John Mayer, Rufus Wainwright, Beth Orton, Duncan Sheik, Angus & Julie Stone, and now with St. Vincent.
@@vaticpillars it’s very generous of you to share such personal memories with us here - thank you so much.
Dear Rick. I got not enough words to thank you for introduce me Mr. Jeff Buckley. What an amazing performer.
I did not know him and i am amaze. Like a rocket to the top of my favourites. Thank you thank you thank you.
I've just watched this video for about the 3rd time.... Maybe next time I'll grab a guitar and try to play along to it.... Its one of the best rock songs I've heard in about 55 years of listening to modern music..... Just everything about it.... Vocals bass drums theramin... Not just guitars..... I remember crying big tears for about two days back in 1997 hearing about his passing.... It didn't seem real.... Such a waste.... My son is 31, plays in a band..... and he LOVES this track and watches 'Live in a Chicago' regularly!! Ric Beato you deserve a medal!!!!
Thanks for highlighting Jeff's music... you should do "Lover You Should've Come over" at some point...
LYSHCO is my fave. Lots of competition though. ♥️
Lover is tremendous. Lilac Wine is one of the deep ones.

We must've been neighbors, Rick! From '94-'98, I lived at 7 St. Mark's Place between 2nd and 3rd. I used to run into Jeff too. He lived on 9th Street. You and I probably ran into each other a few times. Jeff was my hero. To me, he was gonna save everything that was Rock Music. Still not completely over his death. To think what would have been :/
What was he like in person?

because of what happened, for me, vancouver became jeff's mangnum opus. i missed finding jeff in the 90's. i don't know how, but that has happened to me before in 60 years of music. i found jeff, thankfully, around 2015. and then i was heartbroken. i hope i would have known how special he was when he was alive, but who knows? the lesson i learned from him was that i do not take any of my friends and family, especially my music friends, for granted ever. creative people are precious gifts who make life better. grace is one of my favorite albums ever, pure genius. sketches for my sweetheart the drunk is beautiful and haunting. vancouver is my desert island song...if i only had one song that i could ever listen to again. 💫
I watched the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert two nights ago and when Violet Grohl sang Last Goodbye I said to my wife it had been such a long time since I heard that song, a really long time. Then she sang Grace and I loved it. I listened to Grace (the album) later that night and I was completely blown away. I then went back and listened to the title track over and over again and I can honestly say it's probably, no definitely, one of the greatest songs I have ever heard in my life. I can't explain it but it is absolutely incredible. It's a masterpiece, pure and simple.
Exactly. I’ll never understand why he is only embraced and known by music nerds.

Totally agree! Trust Rick to recognize its brilliance.
Thankyou Rick
I too have always loved the song Vancouver....unique and special in its sound and feel.
As for the vocals...well.....sublime.

a few tracks on Mystery White Boy were from this night and that same night was also my birthday.
I miss Jeff's amazing voice, and that guitar sound of his...
Truly unique and though he left us with such beautiful music I feel it was a fraction of what Jeff may have done had he not passed away so tragically...
As a musician myself his music was inspirational and really got into ones soul.
RIP Jeff Buckley
'the tear that hangs inside my soul forever......'
It seems a lot of people have Jeff stories. I met him in Toronto while he was touring Grace in 1994. I was a DJ at a University radio station and had the pleasure to interview Jeff prior to his incredible concert at the Trinity Church. He was a kind soul and was very patient with me as a silly kid awkwardly conducting my interview. His death was a tragic loss for all of us. And thank you for you thoughtful analysis.
"I am your failed husband contender. I'm your loan shark of bliss." ... One of my favorite lines from any song. And this has always been my favorite Jeff Buckley song. Great choice for a deep cut WMTSG!

@Get Real Music My favorite as well
His vocal phrasing was that something that can't be taught.
Lover
I think "criminally underrated" is perhaps the wrong term. Among those of us who remember, and are actually musically savvy enough to "rate" him, I think he's quite highly regarded. - "Under acknowledged" however might be a much more accurate observation. jmo
He’s most definitely not underrated.
Jeff Buckley and Chris Cornell two guys with incredible talent and great vocal range. We miss you both very much.
Oh men....grace, what an amazing record !!!
Jeff is King. This is my absolute favourite JB tune. Saw it for the first time on Live in Chicago as an instrumental it blew me away. Mind was blown again when listened to Sketches for the first time.
The version from The Bataclan is absolutely *blistering!*
I’ll check it out cheers 🤟
Do a ‘what makes this song great’ on Grace please! The vocals, guitar and drums are amazing on that track
Yes! 👌
I'd be happy with Dream Brother, too.
Just do the whole album
It’s actually Eric Eidel on drums on this song ! Loved this episode though. One of my favorite songs ever. Mojo pin or Grace would be cool for another time. Keep on rockin’ Rick
Apparently they weren't satisfied with Eidel's timing. I think he sounds fine on Sweetheart
Rick pays the utmost homage with his air guitar. Beautiful song.
Before this video came out, I only knew Jeff Buckley as “the Hallelujah guy”, but ever since you introduced me to Vancouver, I’ve listened to his entire discography many times over. Now he is my favorite artist. Thank you, Rick, for showing me that Jeff Buckley is much, much more than just the Halleujah guy.
If only more people recognized what you have discovered.
I love Jeff Buckley’s music. I grew up with his music because my parents love him too, so the album “Grace” is extra nostalgic for me. You should make more videos on Jeff’s songs. Everyone else on RUclips focuses on his godly singing, but no one talks about the chords and the instrumentals.
Man, Buckley... what a loss. Thank you so much for giving him some love.
Jeff’s music is so beautifully perfect and raw. Wish I could’ve met him. “So Real” & “New Year’s Prayer” are my faves of his.
I totally geeked out when I saw that you had a Jeff Buckley version of "What Makes This Song Great". You could do every one of his songs and keep finding amazing things. Thanks so much Rick!
Omg, when I saw the album cover for Sketches appear all I could think was "please be Vancouver, please be Vancouver"
"...the song is called Vancouver"
Yesssssssssssssssss!!
A truly sacred musical moment for me was when I heard a recording of Jeff Buckley singing "Dido's Lament."
More Buckley please!!! I’ve never seen you rock out so hard with air drums and guitar. Jeff is why I play.
I was lucky enough to see Jeff in 95 in a tiny venue in Portsmouth UK. Amazing talent! Gone bet never forgotten.
Simply amazing. Jeff inspires me a lot to become not only a great guitar player, but a skilled singer as well. The perfect mix of alternative rock and jazz.
12:31 My mind: That chord progression sounds like Muse
12:33 "If you wonder where Muse got their ideas..."
I thought the same thing the first time I heard ‘Grace’
Basically the entirety of late 90s British rock was a tribute to Jeff Buckley
Thanks Rick for keeping the flame burning. What a special musician JB was. One of the guys that brought me to tears.
I remember hearing Jeff for the first time. I was rushing out of the house and was stopped dead in my tracks listening mesmerised to the incredible melody of the guitar and range of vocals. I knew I was listening to a genius then. Why do the greats die so young!?
Love seeing Rick so enthusiastic! I recall my first exposure to Jeff Buckley. He preformed Grace on 120 Minutes back in 94/95 which I still have on VHS. It was sensory overload. I could not believe what I was seeing/hearing. Needless to say, I purchased the Grace CD the very next day.
Vancouver and Morning Theft are my favs from this album! Such beauty
Ugh...Morning Theft. I used to perform that song completely A Cappella. The melody is too beautiful for description.
Hell yes!
The lyrics to those two songs are sublime.
natebanks Yes, also “Opened Once” has beautiful lyrics.
Also the delightfully titled "I know we could be so happy baby (if we wanted to be)" and (the best of all, imo) "You & I"
Always found the bridge to the ending of Vancouver breathtaking. Almost like Yes' angry little brother. I saw a working instrumental version of this in 94 in Madison WI. Literally the most humbling musical experiences of my life.
"Almost like Yes' angry little brother".... in his teenage years, Jeff performed Yes songs with his band.
Immediately love your new feature video series "deep cuts"... When I saw the notification for Jeff Buckley I was knowing you would absolutely hit it out of the park and your closeness to such a gifted artist should not be surprising... but so delighted to hear your take on This incredible song
I know absolutely nothing about music. BUT, I could watch you for hours. Your passion and love for the music is infectious.
Rick , you remind me of that friend who just assumes everyone understands what your talking about. No pretentious talk, no explaining to the uninformed. Just true unbridled passion in sharing what you love. Keep up the great videos.
Jeff Buckley, by far my favourite musician ever. I can't remember ever being stopped in my place hearing a song for the first time. But Grace did it. On MTV mind you. His death hit me like a sledge hammer.
I couldn’t agree more! Jeff is a legend and definitely one of the top 5 best artists ever in my opinion. Pure emotional expression ✨❤️✨
"last goodbye" hit me like a sledgehammer but the other songs on Grace didn't. I have Grace and will have to really give it a careful listen. Never really got past Hallelujah and Last Goodbye.
I witnessed this live as an instrumental when he opened for Juliana Hatfield in Boston in ‘95….I will never forget that moment….such a gorgeous song 😢
Mick Grondahl is so laid back cool.Knows his Bass. All together Fantastic band.
Wow, what a hidden gem! Previously, my only exposure to Buckley was "Hallelujah" (a song I have always disliked) but I realize now this guy was gifted. Just heard "Grace" for the first time also - amazing! Got some listening to to do now... KEEP 'EM COMING!
Been listening to JB at work all day. F'ing brilliant! Can't believe I overlooked this guy because of 1 song I didn't like (song, not his performance of it). Damned shame he died so young.
I have to thank Rick from the bottom of my heart for turning me onto Jeff Buckley recently. Jeff is the only performer that ever made me really want to cry listening to Lover, You Should've Come Over. I'm kind of glad I discovered him now instead of 25 years ago because I can appreciate and enjoy it more. Thanks again Rick Beato for your great channel.
I know its a cover, but when he sings "Hallelujah" I can't help but stop whatever I'm doing and sit silently absolutely hypnotized by the brutal and beautiful melancholy of it.
That’s not Matt Johnson on drums. Either Eric Eidel or Parker Kindred.
Absolutely incredible breakdown, Rick. The bass was a revelation. You’re a treasure!
He is my favourite musician, I'm so happy people who understand music love him too
Had the chance to see Jeff Buckley Live 3 times in Paris...Unforgettable. I'm 46 now. I remember I had the same feeling about this record when it came out, and still have it , a lot of songs seems unfinished, besides a few of them. Vancouver and Morning theft are one them.
Your videos are medicine for my musical heart, and make perfect sense when nothing else around me does. Thank you Rick✌️
I only recently started listening to Jeff Buckley. It's almost as if all these years, I've been waiting for this moment to find something truly unique, inspirational and disastrously lovely. As a lover of the soulfully unique, it's almost as if I can't bring myself to try to find others who listen to him because it's so deep I almost feel like no one would understand. The complexity is phenomenal. The abstract but gorgeous chord progressions. You think it won't fit but then it does. Idk it just truly blows my mind.
I have been waiting for a very long time for Jeff Buckley to appear on your channel. Thank you, Rick!
this is by far the best song ever written. we had a precursor of Vancouver in the live dvd he did in chicago and then when this album came out he added lyrics. i can't give enough praise to this song and jeff. thanks for this video.
I gave you a like just right after reading the name Jeff Buckley. His music is so deep in feelings tha almost hurt, but at the same time you can heal yourself with the melodies and harmonies.
You've just described Jimi Hendrix's Electric Church.
❤️
The Sky Is A Landfill takes the cake for my favorite song period. His Sketches era songs have this intensity and grit to them that only showed up with transience on Grace and the lyrics are some of the most poetic I've ever read. Thinking about what would have come of that record being finished to his standards and the ones to follow compared to how perfect it is already gives me chills. It was a pleasant surprise to hear that you met him in person and I hung on to every word of that story. Great analysis!
I’ve been waiting for this for a long time Rick!!please make more videos about Jeff! 🎸🔥🤘🏻
Please Rick analyze So Real in WMTSG
Would be nice to see a video on Tim too ;)
@@sunlion8866 So right, Tim Buckley was an absolute giant in pushing music forward but like so many creative souls so underrated.
That was amazing Rick.
It’s over 25 years ago that I saw Jeff live in Melbourne and the way the audience just stood silently open mouthed still feels like yesterday to me. It’s my favourite memory from many different nights seeing performances.
And this song… like you I was hesitant but remember being moved to tears the first time I heard it and then just had it on loop!
Jeff is one the best guitar players who ever lived. He was so fucking good at BOTH singing AND guitar it's hard to articulate that coming from one single person.
One thing I'm not entirely sure about is the theramin. It sounds an awful lot like a slide and an E-bow to my ears; but it's Jeff so it could be a theramin. 🤷♂️ thanks for the video Rick!
This is beautiful, Rick. I too was hesitant to listen to this album after his death. I saw him in '94 for the first time and was blown away by his powerful voice (like his dad) and musical arrangements. Such a loss.
Video of the Year! Oh my God the vocals are out of this world and Rick you are the only analyst who could do em justice. I'm just reveling in the sounds, the comments, your joy on the air drums... I paused at 10:05 after the theramin brought me to ecstacy and you just said there's still a guitar solo to come. Man...
One of the things I love about Rick's videos is that I can learn not just about music theory, but I can also learn about artists I know nothing about. This is a perfect example.
"If you wonder where Muse got their ideas from"... For real. Matt Bellamy has actually said that Jeff Buckley is the reason he first felt comfortable with singing in his upper register. So if it weren't for Jeff Buckley there would be no Muse.
Hang on, that's a bit harsh on Jeff to be fair. If I were Jeff I'd have gotten on the ouija as soon as their histrionic debut of amalgamation buckleydioheadio came out to deny any connection or blame whatsoever!! 🤣🤣🤣
Wow. Okay, guy. I'm not sure what it was about my comment that elicited that response, but you do you I guess.
@@atkstat4540 just a bit of fun really. Muse are pretty awful though really. Polished Pro musicians and live performers, granted, but the material is so horribly derivative and shrill. It's not even in the same world as JB really.
That's really just a matter of opinion, which you're entitled to have. I simply disagree.
@@atkstat4540 fair enough. Suffice it to say that there's few JB songs about whichone can say "oh that sounds like x song by x band, which the same Bach-style arpeggios as the last however many others", or "blimey he sounds like a more high pitched histrionic version of x or y of his contemporaries". The one wasn't a copyist, it's as simple as that! 🤣
Didn't know this tune. Just fell in love with. Now I'm fan of Jeff and Rick.
Freakin Buckley changed my life. Amazing artist and a beautiful human. Could have been the next Dylan.
@ThePaul Steezo No, he's talking about Matt Dillon. lol!
Townes Van Zandt gives me the same feels as Buckley. Very different approaches, same impact.
@ThePaul Steezo Oh boy, it's 4 a.m. here. LOL!
@@BluesLicks101 Matt Dillon can walk thru walls!
@@elowe5937 With the power of a Matt Damon.
I lived around the corner from Siné for many years, and I refused to go see Buckley. As a NY native I thought he was an arriviste. I didn’t like Grace. Much to my shame... I only got into him after he died. “Sketches” is a fucking MASTERPIECE. And the greatest seduction album of all time. Both of my children were conceived to it. It facilitated a number of other side escapades I won’t go into it. Suffice it to say, I’m sad I didn’t get to see him when he was alive and thank him personally - he was tapped into something very deep, alive and real. And had 100% commitment to what he was doing.
This is an excellent analysis and more importantly a passionate testament to exactly how and why jeff was great. Once again , Rick, you have delivered exactly on what you promised. I’m a fledgling RUclipsr and you are my inspiration, I’m in awe of what you do and you’ve given me something to aspire to. Keep making these, they are absolutely crucial.
Thank you Tristan!
Thank you for bringing more attention to Jeff, hes a masterful artist and one of my favorites. Not enough music RUclipsrs cover him imo. Amazing that you saw him live at Sin-e
I love the songs Everybody Here Wants You and Witches Rave on My Sweetheart. Much love Rick
He is really hard to cover - hard to play and super hard to sing.
Buckley was a HUGE inspiration for the band I was in during the 2000s. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that, once I fully immersed myself in his music, I really HAD to start a band to get out all that inspiration. He and his father were two of a kind and the tragedy of their passing still hurts in the world even today. Vancouver was one of a several favorites off of Sketches. He has such a wealth of music. He was both prolific and extremely talented -- I'd put him in the same space as Prince or any other truly "whole package" artist.
I know EXACTLY how Rick is feeling when he listens to this track. I have nerded out many time to this
Rick this makes me so happy. Long-time subscriber usually content to just watch and soak in your videos, but seeing this song--which I thought was an obscure favorite--makes me so happy. You do it justice--not sure I've ever seen you so . . . . . enthused. I had my own very minor personal run in with Jeff years ago just before Grace came out. Wish I could have told him what his music would mean to me, but I hadn't even heard it yet!
Never knew this song existed. Thanks Rick. And Jeff is one of the best for sure. What a truly expressive dude, he could make a song super dark, and loose, but as u said a flawless musician. And Rick, you're one of the few legit dudes I've seen and heard in a while, doing this sort of thing. Dig ur skills + knowledge are hella impressive,
The World is so much a better place for having these two records, Grace and Sketches.
Jeff was a gift, from where, I don't know, but I wish he could've stayed even just a little while longer with us.
But we have these two records and we should be thankful for that ... and I'm sure we are.
This song has always given me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's incredible. I saw him open for Breeders & Guided By Voices (ridiculous lineup). I was 18 and remember thinking he was good but I was not paying much attention. Then I bought Grace a while later and realized how amazing this guy truly was. What a loss.
Can't believe you broke this song down. One of his best and most underrated tunes. Bravo
Jeff Buckley and Rick Beato, what a combo
Right?
This song is one of those which cuts right trough to your guts and Heart at the first listening. So much intensity, drums are like violently whipped,.... Hard to describe, one of m'y favorite
I really love this series! It helps me find great songs I had no idea existed.
The loss of Jeff Buckley STILL affects me very deeply...over 22 years later. I was 20 when he died. I’ll never forget where I was & what I was doing when I heard the news. I went numb. Instantly. I hope in some way he knows how much he is loved & appreciated to this day.
Little did Jeff Buckley know that Rick was going to become the Rick Beato..
The* titles are captialized :)
