    According to the Jewish religion everywhere, which also defines the national law in Israel, only a man has the power to grant a divorce. Women find themselves chained to their husbands against their will, even if the separation is mutual. The film follows several such "chained" women in Israel together with Batya, a religious feminist lawyer, who embarks on a struggle against the rabbinical courts, to set these women free.

    Sarah has been refused a divorce for two years, Noa has been waiting for three, and Oshrat for nine years. The freedom of these women and hundreds more in Israel is in the hands of their husbands and the rabbinic court. Batya Kahana Dror is a religious woman and combative lawyer, daring to rebel against the Orthodox Jewish courts. She believes the laws must be changed according to our time. She fights for the freedom of Sarah, Noa, Oshrat, and many more.

      It depends on the branches. If someone converts to Reform, Reconstructionist or Renewal Judaism this wouldn’t happen. This would likely not occur in many Conservative branches either. A man refusing a get is regarded by the vast majority, including in Orthodox denominations, as abusive and shameful behaviour, but still this can happen. So yes, I agree, it’s very important to be aware of, especially if joining more stringent branches such as Orthodox.

    Whatever is commanded to a man is also commanded to a woman. If a man writes a bill of divorce for his wife, then a women writes a bill of divorce for her husband. Deuteronomy 24:1-4 was only using "man writes a bill of divorce for his wife" as a demonstration to show how to divorce your spouse.

    What a terribly sad story this is. I mean, of course, the man who is disabled and cannot give his wife a divorce. She seems to love him very much, but she can't be a nurse for the rest of her life. She is too young for that. I hope I've got this right, because it's impossible to read the English subtitles properly. I feel so sad for both of them. The wife and the husband. Did she say that she converted to Judaism? I don't think she should be treated as a lesser person just because she is a convert. I know that Judaism is more, much more, than a religion. It is a way of living as well, but she is a human being and we all have feelings. When I was young, I fell in love with a Jewish man, and we wanted to get married, but his mother was against it, because Judaism is passed through the wife. His mother and I got along well, she just felt that life and marriage are hard enough, without adding more stress to it. So, in the end, Michael and I didn't get married. I wonder if we made the right decision.

    • @chehrazadeesmey8399
      @chehrazadeesmey8399 2 года назад +3

      No you did not get it wrong, i followed the story through the subtitles and i have exactly the same feeling about Noa, the wife of (Guy ?) the ("disabled") man. I even found much more honest than the lawyer to whom no matter the means if the result is the divorce. I think that her husband kinda gave it up and "chose"to die just a few weeks later as a his real yes to his wife's liberation. God bless his soul and all the best to the loving Noa and her chidren.
      I was also happy for that pregnant woman. I think her child cannot have the name of his father, but the private court decision will at least help this woman to feel a burden off her shoulders.
      On the contrary, i was very uncomfortable with how that man was manipulated, and who, as i was afraid, will not get to see his child as promised.
      I am muslim, i realised with this video how important it is to have secular laws. In my country we have secular laws ruling divorce and religion law allows women to ask for and obtain divorce without depending on the sole man' decision. You know what ? Some people still somehow find a way to create problems because of some so called religious tradition. Also...even with secular laws, some couples find a way or another to tore each orher, using even their children 😭😭😭

      So there is a piece you missed. For Noa and Guy, the disabled man and his wife, he abandoned his family and took off abroad 9 years prior. She had been trying to get a divorce all that time and he refused. The he returned to Israel where he suffered cardiac arrest before they could arrest him and force the divorce decree. He suffered a severe brain injury from lack of oxygen during the cardiac arrest and was in a coma. It doesn't say for how long. Once he woke up they were trying to finalize the divorce. She wasn't divorcing him because of his health condition. It was for abandoning the family 9 years prior. Her youngest child doesn't even remember his father because he was 2 months old when he took off and is 9 now. She has waited 9 years for a divorce so she can move on and have a chance to be free and remarry.

    I still will never understand how any man truly feels that any god in any religion purposely wanted a women to be properly Or owned!!!
    This is the exact problem with all religions…
    You go to a church or synagogue or whatever…… people sit there and listen to one person tell them how their god wants them to live! Or their god wants one person better than the other!!! But you go to next church over and that person tells those people to do what he feels god want..
    Really ….. sorry people .. it you are going to be ignorant and put faith in your gods but in your Rabbi pastor or whatever.. you will always be ignorant.. people who twist the word of their gods whoever it may be our second dividual‘s and the fact that people still are ignorant to this day they will listen to anyone who preaches about God even if deep down they know what that person is saying is crap I still to this day cannot imagine how religions put one human being over another it’s crazy to me

    This is not true, I'm an Orthodox Jew and woman are very much respected in my community. It says woman cannot get a divorce on her own, but in reality the Jewish court will force the husband to give a divorce if the wife wants one. The husband will be ostracized and isolated until he gives a divorce. In biblical times the court would give him lashes until he would give a divorce. In Judaism woman are considered holier than men. And in real Judaism woman are highly respected.
