How Hasidic Jews Lost the War on the Internet | A Documentary

  • This is the story of the Hasidic Jews and the internet. In this documentary, I chart the dramatic saga of how different people in the Hasidic community first reacted to the internet, and how the community slowly coalesced on a solution for dealing with the web. Yes, many Hasidic Jews have now accepted the inevitability of the web, and many of them are online. But this is not without caveats and the community's own inventions. Join me for this long-form documentary to learn more. How are standards enforced? What are the standards? What's my personal connection to all of this? I answer as much as possible in a video that tells a story with wider implications than this community alone. It's a story about technology, change, culture, faith, and what it is to be human in the 21st century.

Agnostic, but hey, I feel if you need to seek how to find the hood in life you’re doing something really wrong? Like religion seems very fear based and abused by parents who are lazy to turn religion and it’s real point away like it has to us? I dunno.

This isn't just one of *your* best videos; it's one of *the best* documentaries I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them). Truly a work of art! And really, mainstream culture could learn a few things from the Hasidim with regard to the internet and smartphones.

I concur. If this video survives, then 1000 years from now people will be better informed about early 21st century Hasidic kosher Internet than about countless far more mainstream topics. No doubt this kind of documentary requires the right kind of highly motivated expert, plus a lot of experience communicating a culture to outsiders. It's exemplary.
I really like the approach, shared also by the Amish and Mennonites, to be selective about which innovations to accept. Even as an ex-Christian atheist, I came up with some of it independently, using a modern flip phone without a touch screen -- not because of some ideology or because someone suggested it, but because during the short time that I had a smart phone, I felt it wasn't good for me.
My daughter was also raised without a smart phone as long as practicable. However, at some point she needed one because in today's mainstream western society, young people who are not on Facebook, Whatsapp etc. are not invited to any offline events because they basically don't exist from the point of view of their peers. I know that strict rules around phones can be a contentious issue in Hasidic schools, but based on our experience I can see why something like this (perhaps not quite as strict) is necessary. I wish there had been a mainstream school for my daughter with a strict 'no smartphones for any child, not even at home' rule. Leaving Internet use (mostly or completely) to parents' discretion otherwise.

Great job Frieda! This was your most informative video yet. I've always wondered how the different Haredi sects manage the internet and other modern and potentially corrupting technology, and your vid provides an excellent summary. You make an important point that it's not possible to exclude modern technology entirely. The only way to deal with it is to adapt technology to suit the requirements of your religious sect, and the Hasidim (including Satmar) seem to have done a fine job of it.

I'm really hurt that someone in the comment would insinuate that this video is an ad for anyone.
To be clear: I did not get a single penny from ANY OF THE BUSINESSES MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO.
I have used my platform to elevate other creatives because I know what goes into creating videos. I name names to be concrete about what the information is about. How else should I cover subjects?
I paid thousands of dollars to produce this video and don't expect to earn it back. I do it because I am passionate about these subjects, especially technology. This channel survives on my walking tour income!

Seeing 9yr olds making “get ready with me” videos, using expensive adult skincare & makeup, totally determined to grow up as fast as possible…it feels dystopian. It’s getting so out of control.

I would encourage you to write Hasidic Jews instead of Hasidim. I know its the same but it makes it clear to a total layman who/what you're talking about (in this regard "ultra-orthodox" would be even better, but I've understandably never seen you use that term and I don't think you'd like to even if it brought more clicks). Most people also have a shorter attention span, so instead of writing "The surprising saga...." I'd recommend "Hasidic Jews and the Internet", or, even more attention grabbing, "Do Hasidic Jews ban the Internet?". This is all coming from a click-maximizing POV, if you mean a title that more accurately reflects the video's content that's more complex, but I think the current one works.

As you’ve shown, there have been & will necessarily be compromises between Hasidism & modernity concerning Internt. Change probably will come slowly but businesses will want to be connected . Thanks again, Frieda. The videos become professional!! No longer small channel!

This was such a well done, professional video that is just as good, if not better, than any documentary on the topic that we might see on a mainstream media channel such as 60 Minutes. The material was comprehensive, organized perfectly & your delivery was beautiful. I can honestly say that there isn’t one video of yours that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed & learned a great deal at the same time.
    As always, thank you!!!

This was absolutely fascinating thank you so much for making this video - also it is always a sheer joy to watch your videos because they are so beautiful orchestrated. My Jewish family assimilated fully into London society when they came here at the turn of the last century as such I often ponder what life would have been like if we had arrived in Brooklyn or if we had kept Orthodox. Like you it saddens me greatly to see how the Hassidic community is portrayed online and through media - of course as a Jew who loves her internet I can see the benefits it could do for their community but I also strongly admire how the Hassidic community wishes to preserve tradition and protect their children from the tribulations of a life online

Excellent video Frieda. The Chasid view of the internet with regards to children don’t seem extreme to me, a non Jewish person. My small granddaughters go to a Catholic school. They are not allowed to be in the web (even though there are a lot of connections in their house). No intelligent parent would allow children to be online. And the rabbi who said even text messaging can be harmful is spot on. WRT being connected 24/7 via email - AMEN! I’ve used smartphone from the very beginning. I’ve answered work emails at midnight because of the damned “ding.” It makes sense to recommend to their followers to “leave the emails at work” sounds good to me. While Chasids may need to learn from the modern world, perhaps the modern world can learn some things from the Rebbes. Please keep up the good work.

I can absolutely relate to the idea of a less connected internet. I am an outsider, but the constantly online nature of life has sped up to the point where I feel an overwhelming need to step back from technology. I may seek out kosher devices myself, as I would appreciate a device that lets me engage with the internet on my own terms. It's a right I feel we should guard.

Thank you for making this video and showing the history of the Hasidic and Orthodox response to and use of the Internet. although for community’s sake, “rules for everyone” had to be made, it is also ultimately the individual’s responsibility to decide how best to use the internet and other technologies and still be on the right track. And actually, every person with strong morals in or outside of Judaism needs to do that. The issues you describe in this video make that very clear. We all know that the people we spend the most time with will influence us the most, good or bad. And the same is true of the use of the internet. The more time we spend on it, the more it will influence us, which means we really do need to discern good from bad, keep the good, and discard or avoid the bad. What you say in this video, therefore, is really very important.
