How Hasidic Jews Lost the War on the Internet | A Documentary

- This is the story of the Hasidic Jews and the internet. In this documentary, I chart the dramatic saga of how different people in the Hasidic community first reacted to the internet, and how the community slowly coalesced on a solution for dealing with the web. Yes, many Hasidic Jews have now accepted the inevitability of the web, and many of them are online. But this is not without caveats and the community's own inventions. Join me for this long-form documentary to learn more. How are standards enforced? What are the standards? What's my personal connection to all of this? I answer as much as possible in a video that tells a story with wider implications than this community alone. It's a story about technology, change, culture, faith, and what it is to be human in the 21st century.

Dear Frida although you may be perceived or identified as OTD I see your journey as a continuous mitzvot as your videos are contributing to harmonize relationships and building bridges between communities in a respectful and positive manner. Since the beginning of your series I've been diving more and more into Jewish spirituality thanks to your videos. Stay blessed ❤❤❤

Oh, my goodness! This was absolutely beautiful.❤❤❤ Very well written! 👏 If I was a RUclips or I feel like this is definitely what I would want to hear! I would feel so positive. Great job! And I wish you luck on your journey and your explorations! You sound like a very kind and warm and loving person! ❤️ Round of applause for you! Sending love!
Well said and I agree❤
What's wrong with you
The amount of work that went in to this documentary is evident. Your understanding of chassidim is profound as well as eye opening.
I am an African American female, non religious, and I still appreciated this video. I work as a nurse with some Hasidic Jews and it makes me understand even small things…such as why I was told I can’t text them and such. Good documentary!
Aye, I’m a white male. Non religious as well. Definitely respect it. I don’t disbelieve, and I don’t outwardly believe? I just don’t know. Agnostic, but hey, I feel if you need to seek how to find the hood in life you’re doing something really wrong? Like religion seems very fear based and abused by parents who are lazy to turn religion and it’s real point away like it has to us? I dunno.
all whites came from hebrews jews were divorced just a bitching exwife
Thank you for this wonderful recounting. As a convert, there is so much history that I am researching and learning about all the different jews and the cultural, religious and social differences of Jews. This documentary comes at a time when the internet is is both sword and shield for the world events. It is always such a pleasure to watch the work you do. Thank you again.
Ah you should go get a citizenship in isreal like palestinians can't. 😂
@Padraigp wdym? The people that gave hamas Intel were thousands of Palestinians with work visas learn the problem before talking about it
@@bruh.seriously1the problem was Rothschild and Balfour. Oh, and Joseph Caiaphas.
@@bruh.seriously1 Don't forget Netanyahoo and the govt of Israel created and funded Hamas to sow divide amongst Palestinians so they had controlled opposition.
lol there’s no such thing as a Jewish convert. We are the chosen, God either made you so or didn’t. You are role playing unfortunately for you.
This isn't just one of *your* best videos; it's one of *the best* documentaries I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them). Truly a work of art! And really, mainstream culture could learn a few things from the Hasidim with regard to the internet and smartphones.
Thank you so much, that's very kind. ❤❤
I concur. If this video survives, then 1000 years from now people will be better informed about early 21st century Hasidic kosher Internet than about countless far more mainstream topics. No doubt this kind of documentary requires the right kind of highly motivated expert, plus a lot of experience communicating a culture to outsiders. It's exemplary.
I really like the approach, shared also by the Amish and Mennonites, to be selective about which innovations to accept. Even as an ex-Christian atheist, I came up with some of it independently, using a modern flip phone without a touch screen -- not because of some ideology or because someone suggested it, but because during the short time that I had a smart phone, I felt it wasn't good for me.
My daughter was also raised without a smart phone as long as practicable. However, at some point she needed one because in today's mainstream western society, young people who are not on Facebook, Whatsapp etc. are not invited to any offline events because they basically don't exist from the point of view of their peers. I know that strict rules around phones can be a contentious issue in Hasidic schools, but based on our experience I can see why something like this (perhaps not quite as strict) is necessary. I wish there had been a mainstream school for my daughter with a strict 'no smartphones for any child, not even at home' rule. Leaving Internet use (mostly or completely) to parents' discretion otherwise.

Never forget the internet came under the guise of Oh it'll be an information place where you can get info and also upload info etc ok NOW look at it today it's LITERALLY a detriment to humanity and our children and I'm not of you and i didn't watch all this video but I'm here to say it's become hmm say ten LITERALLY POISONING our young minds so if you guy's are not of this new evil then 10000000%%%%% I'm with you honestly if it wasn't such a detriment to young minds I'd not care but it really is dangerously dangerous for humanity I'd love to explain it but i know once i type TRUTH and guidance and righteousness yt will automatically delete my whole comment still show me it making me think it's still up but no one else can see it but only me ok so this alone should tell you everything that's if this even stays up and you even see it ok Blessings All Around the world to all of you and us 👍🏻
Frieda, time spent with you is always worth it. I learn so much.
Frieda - you have really opened my eyes with this post; thank you so much for all the hard work you do - I appreciate it, even though I’m a Christian.
I thoroughly enjoyed your documentary. It was very enlightening. I also love your style-you present facts without badmouthing anybody. Please stay safe and continue your work. Thank you.
“FRUM” the World Wide Web
Freida, this is an insightful and cinematicly well done piece! Thank you so much for your balanced presentations of Hasidic life. You do such a service to all of us who appreciate the many ways of living in authentic Jewish life. I am very grateful for this… Your Catholic nun friend from Cleveland,
The production value of this video is amazing - fantastic work. Very interesting.
Brilliant video Frieda❤. One can see how much work, preparation and effort has gone into this docu! You have a great talent at wrapping information in a highly entertaining but also informative package. Well done. Grüße aus Munich 😊
I absolutely LOVE watching your videos. You present facts regarding Hasidism in a non judgmental way . I find so many customs down to earth very interesting. Keep up the good work!
Your content is always so very interesting, and you are quite knowledgeable of the subjects! Every time I see a post from you I click on it immediately! Thank you so much for shedding light on the ways of Hasidim. and making it easier for this non-Jew to be able to grasp your meaning. You are a lovely, bright, and talented lady!
Thank you for your excellent work in this documentary Frieda. It merits multiple viewings!
Modern Hasidic Scrolling; The Rise of Internet in the Satmar Community. Thank you, Frieda. I enjoy your videos and appreciate all of the time and the research that you put into each one of them. I love seeing the world through your eyes.
Dear frieda your videos are getting more and more professional the amount of information was fantastic thank you
Great job Frieda! This was your most informative video yet. I've always wondered how the different Haredi sects manage the internet and other modern and potentially corrupting technology, and your vid provides an excellent summary. You make an important point that it's not possible to exclude modern technology entirely. The only way to deal with it is to adapt technology to suit the requirements of your religious sect, and the Hasidim (including Satmar) seem to have done a fine job of it.
This is an in-depth, well explained insight into the development of the ongoing Hasidic response to the massive fast moving multi faceted threat of the internet. I appreciate it and also the approach that mindful use of the internet has many benefits. Really enjoyable too.
If you don't get some kind of award for this in-depth video, well, I just don't know. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
awww thank you.
Wow Frieda, I am always impressed by the quality of your content but you really took it up a notch for this one! Wonderful job!❤
I'm really hurt that someone in the comment would insinuate that this video is an ad for anyone.
To be clear: I did not get a single penny from ANY OF THE BUSINESSES MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO.
I have used my platform to elevate other creatives because I know what goes into creating videos. I name names to be concrete about what the information is about. How else should I cover subjects?
I paid thousands of dollars to produce this video and don't expect to earn it back. I do it because I am passionate about these subjects, especially technology. This channel survives on my walking tour income!
PS: One of the foundational rules of youtube is you have to disclose sponsors or risk getting taken down.
People will always critize you along the way just know in your heart it's for the right reasons you make films which we all enjoy and are super grateful you show us the real hasidic community's an insight we wouldn't usually see so thankyou for your films
Your reputation is impeccable so ignore the gripers !
The funny thing about that is that this video will most likely not be seen by folks who would use the services you talk about, so not a very well-thought-out criticism.
Frieda, people who leave comments like that are one of two types: A person with their own agenda and your site is a way for them to push that agenda and it has nothing to do with you at all. Or they are a sad hateful person who is to be pitied! Either way, their comment really wasn’t about YOU! Don’t let one schmuck get you down! They are not worth your energy. What would Pearl tell you about this noodge? ❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘
Thanks Andrew. You said it all.
Honestly, keeping kids offline sounds like something the rest of the world should think about. At least, to some extent. Seeing 9yr olds making “get ready with me” videos, using expensive adult skincare & makeup, totally determined to grow up as fast as possible…it feels dystopian. It’s getting so out of control.
Frieda, this was so interesting and informative! Thank you so much for being a source of knowledge and positivity. 💙
I'm so impressed with this young lady's skill as an interviewer and presenter.
Thank you so much.
I think this is your best video yet! Well done! So interesting.
Looking forward to this video. Love all your videos!
Thank you as always for educating us on this very misunderstood community. I really appreciate your hard work, I look forward to your new videos. Keep up the good work!
I have been watching you channel for some time now and have found it very interesting and very well-balanced. This one, I think, is the best one yet. We need to spend more time trying to understand people’s differences, rather than judging each other. Thank you for this.
Thank you Terry. I really appreciate it.
Wow Frida!! This is your best piece so far!!
Thank you Frieda!😁👍🏼Please keep making them. I learn something new every time 😁👍🏼🙏
Frida, the feeling of love and respect for the way of life in which you were raised permeates every one of your videos, but especially this one. You are filling a distinct role and have cornered a niche. People who have "left the fold" often publicize it with negativity and bitterness. The world needs more people like you, who focus on sweetness and positivity!
Call for submission!
Can you help me think of a better title for this video? A good title makes a video, and I’m not good at titles.
Please suggest a title. If I use your submission, you will win either a $100 gift card for a tour or a sponsorship in one of my videos, your choice. 😊
Thank you!
Your video was put together really well.
As an idea-man myself, don't mind if I make a few sugestions:
-Hassidic Whiz kids and their Rebbes.
-The online shtetl.
-Cyber Sheikets and other shenanigans.
-How the Internet will make us all Modern Orthodox.
(It ruins froom kids, yet redeems the hilonim)
-Teitelbaum and Teh Internetz
I like this title as it brings out the complicated relationship beetween chasidim and the internet
Hasidim on the roof: how the internet is shaking century old traditions
Chasidim: to Tech or Not to Tech
I would encourage you to write Hasidic Jews instead of Hasidim. I know its the same but it makes it clear to a total layman who/what you're talking about (in this regard "ultra-orthodox" would be even better, but I've understandably never seen you use that term and I don't think you'd like to even if it brought more clicks). Most people also have a shorter attention span, so instead of writing "The surprising saga...." I'd recommend "Hasidic Jews and the Internet", or, even more attention grabbing, "Do Hasidic Jews ban the Internet?". This is all coming from a click-maximizing POV, if you mean a title that more accurately reflects the video's content that's more complex, but I think the current one works.
In Montreal, there is a library in the middle of Hassidic neighborhood. Just remember seeing hassidic jews using the computer there...but they were scare shitless, always turn around and checking that anybody from the community was there and discover it.
What a wonderful video, thank you so much for putting in this work to share with all of us. I enjoyed it very much!
Frieda, I learn so much from your videos and I am deeply appreciative!
Shalom Frieda! This video was very eye-opening! It gives me a new appreciation for technology and how technology can affect how other communities interact with it. Especially when I was observing Shabbat when visiting Israel 🇮🇱. Thank you so much for this.
Brilliant video! So professional, educational, and entertaining!
I really enjoy your videos, Frieda! Keep up the good work!!
What a great, even-handed, well made, well paced documentary and such a pleasant presenter. Thank you, this was time well spent.
Thanks so much for this. Fascinating and nuanced. The evolution of societies and technologies is a fantastic area to consider. You have presented your insights with great clarity... As you always do! ❤
Thank you for another informative video, Frieda! It's interesting how your community has managed to strike a balance of sorts with regard to the role of the internet and computers.
Freida, my time spent watching your videos are always well spent, however, I think this video is extraordinary! It is obvious how much time and research you put into documenting this and when you include your own life’s journey in your videos it gives your subject matter a wonderful perspective. Thank you again for sharing. I have learned so
Much.
What a beautiful work of art! So many pros and cons. So many opinions! I love how you presented them!
OMG! Freida this amazingly well done! Well done indeed!
Frieda, documentaries such as this one should most definitely got to the Library of Congress. Imagine 100yrs from now someone doing research and they come across this story. It's fantastic! Thank you. Also, as a goy from NYC, I actually think that the internet has done more harm than good, and the story keeps getting written.
What a wonderful and insightful video Frieda ! I'm an anthropology grad student and while Hasidic life is unrelated to my field of research, I've read a lot of the papers out there on the topic (Fader's Hidden Heretics etc) and find it fascinating. Love your channel, thank you for taking the time to produce such high quality pieces for us !
With all the attacks on our culture coming out from "respectable" sources like the New York Times, you're one of the few who honestly represents frum culture. Thank you, Frieda. I'd love to see you do a collab with Jew in the City one day.
It's not attacks its the truth . From one Jew to another , most not all think your being prosecuted. What is happening in Palestine is Genocide if you cant see that then no point in talking . The victims have now become bully's. The Israeli Goverment is trying to destroy the Palestinians because of the blood that runs through them in their veins. Same thing that happened 80yrs ago . #FreePalastine 🇦🇪🇮🇱
Thank you for this video. What an incredible amount of work was put into it, and lots of love I'm sure. Thanks to the internet, I have access, somewhat, to a community I care about but I'm not a part of. I subscribe to a few RUclips pages (Jewish for sure but Hasidic?): yours (obviously) and 3 others (mostly on cooking, family "stuff" and frum way of life). They are: Jar of fireflies, Sonya's Prep and Frum it up. No idea yet for a title for this video but will let you know. Thanks for incorporating Woody Allen, Liev Schreiber and Chaim Topol 🥰 . Have a splendid afternoon! 💙
Yes, I watch Jar of Fireflies a lot and love her. Theses wonderful three ladies are not Hasidic but they're frum and fantastic!
I've seen almost all your video and this is one of the best! So thoughtful, so well edited, so thought provoking! Well Done!
Thank you!! I put the most of myself into this video. It was A TON of work and I was a little disappointed that it didn’t get very many views relative to the enormous amount of work. So it’s nice to hear a bit of appreciation.
Bravo! This is a great vlog! ❤
This is excellent. Content, Calmness, Curiosity were well balanced , Thanks a lot Frieda!
Well done! Thank you for always educating us with sincerity, directness and clarity. Your balanced approach and good intentions are crystalline clear.
Great video . Thank you Frieda ❤
Frieda, your observations are well thought out and insightful, as well as entertaining! Kol Hakavod!
This is a very high production documentary! Thank you for your hard work, and you have given me food for thought. Lately, I have been considering having my next phone be a simple flip phone after my current one dies. To see you using one makes me feel assured that I can do the same.
I always enjoy spending time here! I have learned so much!!😊
Always time wisely spent reading your posts. Your son was adorable & it was nice to see a cameo of Pearl. As you’ve shown, there have been & will necessarily be compromises between Hasidism & modernity concerning Internt. Change probably will come slowly but businesses will want to be connected . Thanks again, Frieda. The videos become professional!! No longer small channel!
Great video - I always enjoy your content.
This was such a well done, professional video that is just as good, if not better, than any documentary on the topic that we might see on a mainstream media channel such as 60 Minutes. The material was comprehensive, organized perfectly & your delivery was beautiful. I can honestly say that there isn’t one video of yours that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed & learned a great deal at the same time.
As always, thank you!!!
Thank you so much Lise, I poured my heart into this one.
@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn - That was so evident, & you knocked it out of the park!!
This was absolutely fascinating thank you so much for making this video - also it is always a sheer joy to watch your videos because they are so beautiful orchestrated. My Jewish family assimilated fully into London society when they came here at the turn of the last century as such I often ponder what life would have been like if we had arrived in Brooklyn or if we had kept Orthodox. Like you it saddens me greatly to see how the Hassidic community is portrayed online and through media - of course as a Jew who loves her internet I can see the benefits it could do for their community but I also strongly admire how the Hassidic community wishes to preserve tradition and protect their children from the tribulations of a life online
Thanks for a great comment.
Extremely well researched and very informative.
You have such a gift, friend. Thank you for sharing! Every time I see a new one pop up, I think OH YAY NEW CLASS WITH FRIEDA! You are such a star! ❤❤
Super interesting and engaging and I can tell how much hard work went into this documentary! Well done.
Fascinating and immensely interesting. Thank you for another wonderful video, as always.
I love seeing smiling children playing rather than staring at screens. God bless you. Thank you for sharing your world.

Great video, as always.
Really enjoyed this Frieda! Thanks for your work
Outstanding!! Once again you show multiple views on the same subject without judgment!
Shalom Frieda! it is an amazing video you made here.
Thank you for doing these videos and introductions and explanatory videos.

Excellent video Frieda. The Chasid view of the internet with regards to children don’t seem extreme to me, a non Jewish person. My small granddaughters go to a Catholic school. They are not allowed to be in the web (even though there are a lot of connections in their house). No intelligent parent would allow children to be online. And the rabbi who said even text messaging can be harmful is spot on. WRT being connected 24/7 via email - AMEN! I’ve used smartphone from the very beginning. I’ve answered work emails at midnight because of the damned “ding.” It makes sense to recommend to their followers to “leave the emails at work” sounds good to me. While Chasids may need to learn from the modern world, perhaps the modern world can learn some things from the Rebbes. Please keep up the good work.
Thanks Frida, while there were plenty of similar content out there in the world, you've taught us something new, God Bless You!
This was super interesting and well balanced. I appreciate your work 💕
You are just amazing... thank you so much for putting such time and care and effort into your videos!
Your voice is asmr for me, i love listening to relax and wind down at night but still be interested and excited to learn
Ha ha to be honest I used to record myself reading texts I wanted to memorize and it made me fall asleep!
WOW this is amazing! its also crazy how i am in the middle of making a video abut the citifield asifa itself which you cover in the first few minutes of the video. Its so nice to see a realistic explanation of the way the enforcement works, that it goes through the schools mostly. i like that this video was specific to your experience and community since i come from yeshivish community which is so similar yet outwardly a little different. I am commenting this in the beginning of my journey
excellent work Frieda
Truly enjoy your channel as a Christian I love learning about Jewish people and culture. I watch three orthodox Jewish women channels on RUclips and they explain their life ,faith ,Jewish holidays and usually the most asked questions people are curious about. Frum it up is my favorite. 😊❤
What a wonderful video! Greetings from Varshe!
Who does your video editing? Its becoming really professional. Really really impressive
This was so good! I really enjoyed it. Thank you for all of your work!
As a non-Jew i can honestly say not having a Kosher phone really pollutes your mind. Having a smart phone with web browser and internet does expose you to inappropriate material. 😢
h😂😂😂
Rarely, in my experience.
Your behavior informs your feed.
@@illinnyan4053- If only it were that simple. Making a statement such as yours shows how much you underestimate &/or are just woefully unaware of the full power of algorithms & the way material finds its way to individual users. There are SO many underhanded ways that material ends up on our devices, that goes far beyond just our browser history.
Well made.. Keep up the good work
More great work from you. Polished and absorbing. Congratulations…again. Will share on Instagram x
Now, having come to the end of your video, i have to say that this is an extremely good documentary / cultural commentary.
Yes, Frieda...my time spent watching this fantastic documentary was very much worth my time❣️ Very informative and balanced video..and also giving a very personal view into your childhood, motherhood and your first steps with the internet. You do a wonderful job of being a bridge between two worlds.
I am a non religious person interested in culture, religion and people. I do feel my time with you was well spent. Your video is informative and balanced. Thank you for sharing with us.
🙏 thanks for watching.
Very well done Frieda. I am giving you 100 out of 10 !!!
ha ha!
I love your videos. They are so informative, as I come from a Reform perspective. I am always curious about another culture within our culture. I like the idea of keeping the internet out of the hands of young kids and allowing them to have fun and play outside. I don't think today's kids know what they are missing.
That was so interesting! We all struggle to keep check on the internet and its power! I’m glad it helped you to see a different future for yourself! ❤❤❤
Excellent video! I learned a lot
What Hasidic websites, channels, and personalities can you bring to my attention? Please share here!
There is a whole chasidic culture on telegram
Seekers of Unity is my go-to for Jewish Mysticism. Great episode btw❤
Unfortunately in israel

Love Love all your work 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 Thank you ♥️
I appreciate your work. I have learned so much from your videos. I think there is much to value in the orthodox community. Take what you want, and leave the rest.
Yes, me too!
I can absolutely relate to the idea of a less connected internet. I am an outsider, but the constantly online nature of life has sped up to the point where I feel an overwhelming need to step back from technology. I may seek out kosher devices myself, as I would appreciate a device that lets me engage with the internet on my own terms. It's a right I feel we should guard.
Frida, thanks for your amazing content!
Thank you for watching this video which is very near to my heart
Thank you for making this video and showing the history of the Hasidic and Orthodox response to and use of the Internet. although for community’s sake, “rules for everyone” had to be made, it is also ultimately the individual’s responsibility to decide how best to use the internet and other technologies and still be on the right track. And actually, every person with strong morals in or outside of Judaism needs to do that. The issues you describe in this video make that very clear. We all know that the people we spend the most time with will influence us the most, good or bad. And the same is true of the use of the internet. The more time we spend on it, the more it will influence us, which means we really do need to discern good from bad, keep the good, and discard or avoid the bad. What you say in this video, therefore, is really very important.
Excellent video!!
