I was in jail in NYC with a Hasidic. He was so clueless about modern life that he was arrested for trying to sell 300 ecstasy pills on craigslist. People used to clown on him like crazy, and we really did some fucked up pranks on him, but he was a sport...we kinda protected him for the most part. I heard he went right back into jail after he got out for unpaid child support though.

I lived in a rented basement flat in Stamford Hill for a few years in the 80s. The local Hasidic community was very nice and not at all hostile, although they largely kept to their own. they used to buy a lot of family sized Volvos from my husband

The reason being during WW2 Sweden took in a lot of Jews that were fleeing German at the time, hence the Jewish patronage to the car.

The reporter gives the Hasidim a full chance to explain what they do that is different. It is very helpful and makes things clear, rather than seeming strange. It's odd and interesting to hear the Hasidim speaking with a British accent, as I'm used to Yiddish and Brooklyn accent.

This documentary made me very uneasy. I found the interviewer rather disrespectful and patronising.The filming seemed to focus mainly on the dreary side of life, even the lighting was consistently sombre. As though the film makers were determined to create an aesthetic that conveyed a financially and spiritually poverty stricken community.
I am not jewish, but some time ago I used to go to an all women's gym, which was frequented by many young women from this community. I was struck by their vivacity, strong personalities, joyous sense of humour, all of which were hidden by their wigs and austere clothing. I am always impressed by the children when I see them out and about; the older ones always taking good care of the younger ones.
I understand that the the film makers were restricted in their access (especially to women) but I think they could have found ways to give a more rounded picture of a community that few people know much about. In fact I think they should have seen it as a responsibility in a world where anti-Semitism is a reality.
First time I've seen the inner workings of a Jewish life and believe me in my opinion they're not missing out on anything living a non-Jewish life.👍

What they don't tell you that they believe, that when the messiah returns the jews will rule the world and every Jew will receive 1800 non believers as slaves. Also they believe they are chosen by god. This conviction has huge impact how they think about non believers.

How do they earn money?
This probably the most insightful documentry about hasidic Jews I've seen . A lot of information about customs but also they are not portrayed as so idyllic... there are people who have problems or got lost... that you can find in every other community .
I have never seen chassidism portrayed well by the gentile.

My lesson: It’s a community. They work with each other. No fancy degree needed. And people are earning their living. I kinda like that.

I like it too. I think it's great. Huge families owning businesses and employing their own people and pass their businesses down to the next generation. They don't need the education because they're almost guaranteed a job or a business. But they do have to marry within the religion and I've known Jewish men fall in love with 'outsiders' and either been shunned by their community or had to give up their secret relationship and marry a Jewish woman and possibly not live a fully happy life.
College can be a waste these days. That's just reality.

Not at all. He must abide by the rigid rules of the community, the basic tenant is that everything one’s does is dictated by the rules and laws of the Bible. For a drug trafficker, it’s not easy, the loss of freedom and money is very real.

This is such a great and interesting series.
I grew up in what could best be described as a sort of orthodox Christian community (not Greek Orthodox, just Orthodox (very very observant) Christian). And I can say, and I think any kid who grew up in an orthodox community of any type (Islam, Christian, Jewish, etc) that you have this feeling that you are protected, that the adults really care about you. Our family split away from the orthodox Christian community and became Catholic and I think that was a mistake, not because Catholicism is bad but b/c religion is not so useful if it's practiced 45 min/week. I really miss the life I had as a kid and wish I could find a way back there but I don't know how to go back. But still to this day, I always love to see observant people of any religion and I feel a connection to them. Go to any observant religious community and sure, they will have strange customs, but if you can look beyond that, you will see a decent people willing to endure hardships and lend a hand to the stranger and that's a cool thing to me that I always respect so much

100% true. I've seen in with religious Jews, Born Again Christians, Mormons, and more. I think that some of it involves the way outsiders look at them. For instance, in Tsarist Russia (which ruled all of Slavic Europe) my Jewish ancestors really had to watch their step, because they were despised by Christians. If one Jew committed even a minor misconduct, the entire Jewish community would have to pay for it. If a Jewish peddler cheated a customer, the magistrate would bill the Shtetl collectively. But here in the USA (or in the UK) there's no legal collective responsibility, and the government doesn't deal with us as a block. So we're less paranoid about outsiders seeing us negatively. There's also the "model minority" ideal, where we promote ourselves as being nothing but good, and the authorities believe it.

Nope. 20:30, if you watch it again, you'll hear the lawyer said "be it the kind of trouble I specialize in", meaning legal or crime, or "be it the more normal troubles of life...." meaning sickness, death, pregnancy.
They're not crimes since it's legal for governments to do it, and they do, so it seems they are just "troubles of life" for the rest of us.
He doesn't. He refers first to those with criminal activities and then separately then refers to something else - people who have troubles of life.

I've bought weed off a orthodox jew! There a law unto themselves, in Manchester they actually chained & padlocked two public parks cause they didn't want to mix with us. One jew said to me that there law is more important than ours, i corrected him! There supposed to learn English, geography and things but they don't, they say they do but they just learn religious stuff. They run businesses out of there houses and don't declare it. The women shave there heads then they wear a wig then they put a covering over that yet I never hear there being oppressed like we do with muslims

I admire his honesty, he knows himself it was wrong, and admits to being an attention seeker, but it is still a shock to see a Hasidic Jewish man turn to drug smuggling. Their society is so close but almost suffocating, it must be really hard to avoid the temptations of a modern city like London. It was a really interesting documentary and a great insight into a much maligned community.

Yeah your right the Jewish community is very strict and very tight knit too, but that’s is a massive part of it that the mother or the father is not missing, in prison or otherwise, it’s very rare to see or hear a Jewish person in the courts or anything to do with the criminals world, but on completely the other hand, just look at how successful they are, they are not involved in crime to make money but have other legal ways to make money, we have gone far too soft on our kids and I keep saying that and I know nothing will happen and if anything does, it’s going to be even more soft law if you possibly can make it any more, you remember when you was young you must have got a clip around the ear etc, I don’t think it done you any harm except probably done you somewhat good if anything!!!!!!!

740: In 740 A.D. in a land locked between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, known as Khazaria, a land which today is predominantly occupied by Georgia, but also reaches into Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, and Romania, the modern Jewish race is born. The wigs under the hats is by far the wildest part of this documentary.
It demonstrates the intense drive to go beyond the expected rule. A wig is enough, a kerchief is enough. But both really means "I'm seriously following our tradition". It is all a show. All of it. If you don't follow rules you get into trouble or worse kicked out.

I'm not Orthodox but I live in an Orthodox neighborhood outside Philadelphia. When they asked how unusual Samuel was, he's REALLY unusual. I don't know any Jews who even do drugs besides myself. It's wonderful he could hang onto his faith so long; prisons tend to lean towards an extreme and devout brand of Christianity. Everyone is a Christian or Muslim until they get out, that is.

A very interesting look into another culture. It is not easy to imagine living such a life of prayer and constant learning of scripture. The community does seem supportive which is a good thing but such restrictions such as they must follow does seem very alien and tribal to me. The lack of higher education is worrying though. All in all it was fascinating and gives food for thought. Most of the people I know are far removed from religious activities but still remain kind, thoughtful, charitable and loving. Where I live I spend most of the time in the natural world far from the crowds of cities, it is so wonderful I could not trade it for anything, the sea, the sky, the forests, the mountain streams, the creatures that live where I am all give me joy and peace. The cities are like going to the moon for me.
I wish I could have being born in a community like this. These people are blessed. ❤

I just started watching the documentary, so apologies if it’s later said in the documentary. The guy who picked him up and is talking to the interviewer is also a former convict, for money laundering, BBC made a documentary i guess few years before, he was younger back then, he was featured there as well.
We all make mistakes. G*d wants us to see this and show others that what you did yesterday does not determine the work you can do for your fellow man tomorrow.

I'm not Jewish. But looking at his body language and the way he responds to questions. I think he's still corrupt and just using people's charity to forgive and help him go clean ,he is just eating till he can find a better place to eat . Drug smuggling sounds a lot less dishonorable than evicting someone via use of dogs.
If they were to evict him, a physical confrontation after notice ,is enough. No need for dogs,if he gets violent then that's what police re for, but defend yourself accordingly.
What's legal and illegal doesn't necessarily correspond to what's right or wrong.
The dogs could kill or seriously injure the guy, while people can use measured force in the situation.
The dogs can also cause both damage to both your tenants and your property.

My Jewish cousins are conservative Jews and observe all the Jewish laws and customs, but they don't go around growing Payot curly que sideburns or wear crazy hats. who was he going to deal to? the title is misleading, just saying. this story shows that a strong community can reform their straying member if that stray values his/her community over their own wants, greed or whatever.
If he were a regular citizen in main stream U.S., his felony charge would have limited some avenues of employment & if he didn't have family or community that supported his reform, the temptation to fall back into crime & hanging out with other criminals would be a reality, he'd be in & out of prison & a burden on society, except for those employed in the judicial/incarceration/legal systems & affiliated institutions.
He was doing to deal with dealers...he was supplying dealers who in turn sold to various addicts, many of whom had innocent children.
