yeah, likely because her family didn't actively destroy her life like the families from ost extremist religions do. It's very obvious from the interview her family was extremely tolerant compared to others (she was allowed to read books from a library, keep her child after leaving, enter the community while wearing pants later on, etc)

Just leaving this here, after listening to the lady explain. The Hanukkiah is the Hanukkah Menorah which can hold 9 candles, the eight candles representing 8 nights plus the Shamash, which is the candle used to light the other candles each night. A regular Menorah has 7 branches, for 7 candles. It's meant to be like the Menorah in the 1st and 2nd temples. So every Hanukkiah is a Menorah, but not every Menorah is a Hanukkiah.
As an older American Jew, I had not heard hanukkiah in my youngest years but called it menorah as most everyone else in my time and place. Over time Israeli Hebrew, food and culture began to influence much of American Jewry. But Satmar Jews do not support modern political Zionism. Their Hebrew is Loshen Koydesh (Holy Tongue) not modern Israeli Hebrew. Of course, they would not use hanukkiah, a word invented by Zionists and used in modern Israel.
yea she advocated for her cult very well. it's not a cult, it's a different way of life and she did well make it more relatable. all other cults should learn from her.
@@businesswalks8301 She doesn't seem to advocate for it very much. She just shows how even though it didn't work for her, it works beautifully for thousands of others who do chose this way of life

As someone who is not Jewish nor knowledgeable about the Hasidic community in any way, I've learned so much from Frieda's channel. She offers a respectful, and nonjudgemental perspective. I'm glad I was able to learn more about this thoughtful, caring, and intelligent woman.
I am ultra orthodox. Frieda is the only ex-Hassid who does not bash the community. Mainstream media is very anti-religious. So anyone who will bash a religious community is made into a celebrity, a best selling author. That is what fuels a lot of the bashing, the $$$ And attention it generates.
Frieda has had a different experience with the Hasidic community and I’m glad she came on to speak about it. I can only imagine it’s still hard for her being hurt and shunned by people she loved and thought loved her. However, she seems to have built a life for herself and becoming a RUclipsr. Frieda speaks so eloquently, it’s the one thing I’m sure she’s happy about that the girls got taught English. Well done Frieda!
As a Mormon, just watched 2 of Frieda’s episodes and found Andrews interview. Im actually in a faith crisis as a Mormon of 60 years. I appreciate the discussion of lifestyles as well as God. Thank you so much for sharing such new knowledge. ❤
I am also LDS and have gone through a faith crisis period. I have since been able to move through it and feel so liberated by what I learned. I have moved from "brittle belief" to " flexible faith." If you're interested, watching faith crisis episodes by Jared Halverson has been wonderful. Wishing you the best.
As a Mormon all I want you to know is that the gift of Jesus Christ's life it's all you need, and there is nothing more you need to do in order to get into heaven but believe that uses Christ as your savior. Please go to a bookstore and get the gospel that's not Mormon made. May the Lord bless you always! You are worthy now! ❤
I have a friend who converted to Judaism and who lives with her boyfriend on the edge of a more modernized Orthodox neighborhood. She tells me about things and I sometimes don't understand them, Frieda did a great job of explaining things. Thanks for the interview.
Frida brilliantly explains the complexities dividing the outsiders view and the Hasidic insiders experience. So wise and articulate. The interviewer does a good job as well, letting her speak and appreciating the content. Frida we appreciate your work and contribution to the Hasidic community’s presence in the world and I think this is your way of being part in a way that works for you! Thank you!
Only 15 mins in, so I've not heard her story of leaving the community, but I have loved Frieda's content ever since I discovered it several months ago. Thank you so much for this interview - I think she is such a role model to all! She gives such a calm, balanced and view of the community she came from and how it connects with the secular world.
I'm not Jewish. I really like both Ms. Vizel and Mr. Gold. I do not understand why anyone would be affronted by these wonderful people. I guess I have a lot to learn! I hope Ms. Vizel gets everything she wants in her human journey.
Frieda is such an open and honest person. I really enjoy listening to her story which she tells without totally bashing and bringing down the orthodox community. I really appreciate that despite her need to leave she finds the amazing little bits and pieces which she still holds dear. The story telling of her mother is something I think many wish they had now instead of the social media and TV etc. I watch her channel and she is so respectful of the community as she walks the streets and you can tell that she has "earned" a certain amount of respect.
I laughed when she described how people would do a double take when they found out who’s daughter she is, because I know. Her father is a mega wealthy and important person in the community and he is the founder and ceo of one of the biggest businesses in the orthodox Jewish world. I loved seeing this personal side of her. So honest and eloquent ❤️
@@lporquai9048 uh, we actually prefer Grammer Correctional Personnel...Grammer Police is an extremely Blue-collarist term and we find it to be very offensive
After reading Julia Haart's book, Brazen, this interview is so welcome. While Julia seems to be filled with so much anger against her community, Frieda is so balanced in her outlook. She manages to see the positives. Would welcome further interviews with her. On her channel , the interviews with Pearl are fantastic.
@@sarahgillen5281 While trauma can cloud a person's memory and paint a picture that is different from reality, she seems to just wanna milk her story for all its worth and this is the way to the cash
Pearl is the real deal! Julia, unfortunately, is not!! The numerous lies she has told in her show have all been proven as 100% false! And then she went on her book tour and continued to lie in her interviews! I just saw her do it on this channel (I am shocked they didn't research if her claims were true before bringing her on as a guest!). She was not raised in a cult and did not belong to a cult! And while she did not go to the most mainstream of Yeshivas, she did have a solid education. After having seen her in a bunch of interviews, it turns out she's just really dumb! The examples she quotes regarding Jewish prayer and Jewish laws are all WRONG! She doesn't have the years right (not even close!), the history, the translations and deeper meanings of the texts, etc. etc. I have less of the feeling that it is due to her Orthodox schooling and more to do with the fact that she is just plain dumb!
Listening to her talk about when you don't fit in to an insular religious community made me think about my childhood which was in a small town in middle America, and I see a lot of similarities. Clearly there were also a lot of differences as well as, but when you don't fit in to a small community, it's hard no matter where you are. In my case I always thought I didn't fit in to my family and now I joke about being the black sheep, but it is a joke. I have come to learn my family doesn't always understand me, but they still love me. I know in this I am lucky because not everyone's family is so caring. As an adult, I still don't fit in with the small-town people I grew up with, but these days I just don't care. The internet helped a lot by letting me connect to people similar to me, and no longer living in that same small town but only visit it on occasions when visiting family. I've lived all over the Southern US since then and I defintely realized I'm a city girl culture wise, but part of me still loves that connection to the country, even if I hate the culture One Of Us that's often pervasive in small town.
As far as a menorah and a Chanukiah, Frieda had it reversed on the difference. A menorah is not specific to the holiday of Hanukkah, and actually only has seven branches whereas a chanukiah is a menorah that is specific to Hanukkah and has nine branches. All chanukiahs are menorahs, but not all menorahs are chanukiahs.
I have already come across Frieda's podcasts and thoroughly enjoy them. I think Frieda has inherited her mother's ability to story tell - she has a wonderful voice and is so easy to listen to. Great program! thank you
Frieda is a wonderful human being, a shining light. Her RUclips channel is beautifully presented, her conversations with her subjects and subject matter are both warm, honest and a joyful celebration. Thank you for featuring her here!
Charedie and Frum children are raised with two parents, loved, nurtured and protected. They are smart, NEVER sell drugs or murder and are functioning members of society. They stay married (mostly) to the same person, DO NOT have kids out of wedlock and RAISE their children. Sounds like a great life to me.
Sorry guys to correct you, even as non Jewish. I'm a guide for the Jewish museum in Prague and during our training we've learnt that Menorah has 7 arms and was connected to the Temple. And since the Temple doesn't exist anymore, the 2nd one being destroyed by the Romans in the 2nd Century is the Menora nowadays merely a symbol of Judaism and the state of Israel. Chanukhia is being used at chanukah. It has 8 main arms and one smaller arm called shames (servant) serving for the one servant candle lighten the other candles. Every day you light one more candle out of 8. It is a reminder on the time when selukhian rulers dehonested the Temple and venerated the Zeus there. When Jews took over the Temple again they needed to produce the consecrated oil which takes 8 days. Yet it seemed that they will not be able to produce new oil before they run out of the remaining leftover estimated to last 1 day - a miracle happened. This leftover lasted for 8 days. That's why you celebrate chanukah for 8 days, the chanukhia has 8 arms, you play dreidel with the 4 letters meaning "Big miracle happened there" and eat donats and others greesy foods to remain you on the oil. On shabes a different candelabra with 2 arms is being used. Feel free to correct me anyone who live the culture. My knowledge is academical. Yet the Prague's community is to big part orthodox and they really tried hard to train us well.
Yes, this is true. As a Chasid who grew up in Israel, I know about these 2 terms. Chanikiyah is a term that was introduced in Modern Hebrew with the revival of Hebrew. Satmar people (where Freida grew up) reject Zionism and Modern Hebrew, they would refer to both as Menorah and will typically not use the term Chanikiyah. That explains why Frieda was confused about this.
she did an amazing job advocating for her cult. you don't usually see that. I wish the interviewer didn't lie and say he tried to get a balance view on cults. I didn't see a single pro-scientology video.
Frieda is amazing! She is such empathetic, sensitive and very intelligent person. Stories on her channel are narrated in such subtile way, always very understanding, respectful and loving. Only she could pull off the interviews with Pearl.
Thank you both for a refreshing, open, honest and respectful conversation about a world most viewers know nothing about. Freida presents a welcomed, balanced experience that is greatly appreciated in a time of black and white, “in a box” thinking. Well done!
This was good to hear a more positive perspective. I think for most people in religious families, for eg, it feels very difficult to exist with one foot in each world: One in the secular and one in the religious. However, for the sake of family, it does seem inevitable. But worth it. She's blessed to have had a healthy and peaceful childhood
I have watched Frieda's channel, she is wonderful and this was a beautiful and respectful dialogue. I love how she explains how "Freedom to choose is a very Western' concept." Great insight. It is incredible that as Ashkenazim, we are literally all cousins but worlds apart.
I was suggested Frieda’s channel on RUclips but I hadn’t really watched anything yet. After seeing this open and honest interview I’m a fan and I’m sure I’m going to love her channel. Frieda you are such lovely and respectful woman!
What I love most about Frida's channel is her absolute respect for the community and every person she interacts with and there is never any judgement in her interactions or interviews! She asks her questions purely from a point of interest and not because their lifestyle is so different from the outside world. Great interview, thank you! For those who have never seen Frieda's channel, I suggest you start with one of her videos with the indominable Pearl! They are a great introduction to how a woman who loves being in her community wouldn't want to leave.

I’ve watched Frieda’s videos and like others, have found them fascinating. However, because she is an expert interviewer, we only hear about the person she is interviewing. This interview was brilliant. What an intelligent, compassionate and strong young woman! I rarely, if ever watch a video that’s more than 15 minutes but I watched and enjoyed every second of this. Hope she comes back for another discussion.
Andrew i must say i found your interview with Frieda fascinating and i stayed glued to my phone the whole time.Frieda was just so eloquent and i found her story about her life in a Hasidic community very interesting. As a Messianic Jew i have a completely different story ,but was also abandoned by my jewish family in the beginning but after many years i was accepted and even understood. Years later when i became a missionary to haiti and leaving the USA and my secular job was a total shock to my family as well as my friends.I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future Evangelist Roger Mansour
Such and interesting and compassionate interview. Ms. Vizel is lovely and so articulate. It takes such courage to speak honestly (and carefully) as it is evident there is love, affection and caring for her family and the community since her childhood. I sense Frieda is an independent thinker, which is a gift and can be lonely at times too. I was raised Catholic although practicing Episcopalian (it's important for everyone to be invited and to hear a women's voice from the altar). Anyway, I see so many parallel's as with many religions, I suppose it's what makes us all human looking for sincere connection. Having worked as a nurse in NYC with mother's and high-risk infants, I can also share confidently how truly wonderful it is to see such care and connection within the Jewish community as there is such care for one another. Ms. Vizel will go far in her vision as I sense we all strive for this connection she speaks so eloquently.
It takes a lot of courage to do what Frieda has done, and even more to talk openly about it. I don't understand those that "cut ties" with their family member or community member based on legalistics and rules, especially when the individual involved doesn't want to cut ties with The Most High, but whose focus is on building a personal relationship with HIM, instead of "rules and legalistics" imposed by the community or it's leaders. Obeying The Most High's Commandments is paramount for all of us, the most important one being To Love The Most High with all of your heart, as then Obeying the other Commandments will fall into place My apologies if I have not articulated my thoughts well. I wish Frieda all the best and may The Most High continue to Bless Her and her family. 🙏❤🙏

What a delight and pleasure to listen to this young woman. She is so wise, thoughtful, and considerate in her language. Such a clear-thinker. Breath of fresh air that she absolutely thinks for herself. I expect a great deal of her rare composure and what seems to me her self-possession (in a very fine way) comes from her upbringing! This was A PLEASURE to listen to while doing mise en place for dinner here in rural Texas. THANK YOU.
I feel such great affinity for the Jewish people. When I was young we had the 11 Plus and if we passed we could choose the high school we wished to attend. I chose the Jewish H.S. because it was the best in the city. I loved it there even though it was so strict. I was in the choir and learned the Israeli National Anthem and at 70 years of age can still sing it. I learned the prayers before and after meals but we “non Jewish” also had our own prayer times. I look back on those days with such fond memories.

I can travel but want to understand more about this beautiful community and see Williamsburg …. I’ve walk by but want to truly understand. My goy friends are amazing! I have a huge support system. Especially at the airport that I work ✈️
The sex part hit hard …. As a male I’m respectful, “ handsome “ and have “ larger than average genitalia “ despite being 6’2 in height…. Sex wasn’t that important to me…. No means no regardless I learned that . I had no idea men could be raped been going to therapy for raoe it’s been helpful. I’m single just want mutual respect and a loving partner. Many asexuals men are Israeli most are men from yeshivahs who were abused but many women too. The boundaries on sex are skewed in the Jewish religion I love both your channels 💙
My absolutely favourite video from On the Edge so far. Frieda Vizel is so approachable and willing to challenge her own thinking as well as the system she was raised in without being overly critical or judgemental. She is a wonderful combination of observer, commentator and teacher and draws out Andrew as much as he draws out her so it feels like a very real conversation and exchange of experience between them which we are privileged to listen in on. I might even re-listen to the whole thing again!
i have visited the place she lived in. found people were friendly to a point because my late husband was orthrodox. i could never live that kind of life. i enjoyed the video. she was brave to leave
I relate to this woman so so much, what she stands for and I was raised a Catholic! It doesn't matterI feel this connection to what she's saying so much and have an immediate empathy towards her. I am open minded and don't expect everyone to conform to one belief. We have to protect and respect each other's beliefs as humans first and foremost and have understanding and for others upbringings and humanity. First will always be protect our children, follow our laws, don't preach unhealthy behaviour that may damage another. ✌️🇦🇺😎
I live near the Hasidic community in London. I love to see the way the children look after each other - travelling on the busses alone etc. They are entrusted to look after their younger brothers and sisters, which clearly develops a sense of self reliance, responsibility and pride, which secular children who are helicopter parents entirely lack! We (secular folk) are so sure we have it right...but are blind to the qualities such a culture offers, and to the fact we are infantilising our children - giving them no real responsibilities to their communities. With responsibility comes pride.
Frieda, your are such a special honest respectful person. i really enjoyed this interview.frieda thank you, you did so well!! Frieda channel is awesome!!
What a wonderful episode. While I find all fundamentalist societies to be frightening, it is refreshing to hear a more moderate discussion with a free, nonjudgmental exchange of ides. I love that this community is striving to keep oral traditions alive. As a teacher, I am deeply saddened that children have no imagination and an ever lessening intellectual curiosity due to the proliferation of instant gratification from electronics. Please do more shows like this one.

Thank you so much for doing this interview. Frieda is such an amazing, highly evolved human, for being able to speak so openly and without bitterness about these incredibly difficult situations.
I know Frieda from her channel and RUclips probably suggested the video based on my being a subscriber of hers - so I’m basically new to Andrew’s channel. I always appreciated Frieda’s non-judgemental presentation of the Hasidic community and that makes her, for me at least, a trusted source of learning about it. I find she was eloquent with her responses to Andrew, trying all the time to be objective in her portrayal of the community and her experience. I also felt that this interview wasn’t exactly easy for her. I hope there can be a second episode of the interview to cover the questions Andrew didn’t get to ask.
Great interview. Love the peeks into the fascinating lives of the Hasidic community, but also Frieda’s. I already follow her,she has loads of great videos. Would love to hear more about her experience on leaving the community and how she adapted into ‘regular’ life in NY.

Andrew, are there any of these Hasidic communities in Britain? Maybe you could find somebody to interview face to face.
I think this woman is so open and so honest, she left the community but she is not bitter such an Intelligent person
yeah, likely because her family didn't actively destroy her life like the families from ost extremist religions do. It's very obvious from the interview her family was extremely tolerant compared to others (she was allowed to read books from a library, keep her child after leaving, enter the community while wearing pants later on, etc)
And that she isn't even a native English speaker is simply astounding. She's an incredibly articulate and attractive lady.

Hard to believe someone who grow up in this community for years would not know that.
@@alg11297 This also surprises me very much, but is not the only thing that Frieda does not know anymore.
@@Barbara-bl7xv Anymore? Says alot for person who claims to be a victim of a community and then makes a living showing outsiders what it's all about.
Hanukkiah is a modern Hebrew word, and it's not generally used in the Orthodox community; rather, we just say menorah.
I feel Frieda shows respect for her former community and her family. She really describes her life in the Hasidic community growing up.
yea she advocated for her cult very well. it's not a cult, it's a different way of life and she did well make it more relatable. all other cults should learn from her.
@@businesswalks8301 She doesn't seem to advocate for it very much. She just shows how even though it didn't work for her, it works beautifully for thousands of others who do chose this way of life
@@beans4853 I try to tell the scientologist the same thing, just because you didn't like it, doesn't mean all the other tortured souls in your cult don't like. they should learn from Frieda on how to make it seem like a lifestyle choice and not coercion.
lol if you think being born into a cult is a choice, you are insane. I got 5 likes to my original comment because they couldn't tell I was being VERY sarcastic, Frieda is of course OUT of her mind. I heard those rabbis abuse the kids and spank grown women with goat hangers. stop the madness
As someone who is not Jewish nor knowledgeable about the Hasidic community in any way, I've learned so much from Frieda's channel. She offers a respectful, and nonjudgemental perspective. I'm glad I was able to learn more about this thoughtful, caring, and intelligent woman.
I'm a huge fan of balanced commentary. I have been watching Frieda's channel for a while. She's a pleasure to watch.
I am ultra orthodox.
Frieda is the only ex-Hassid who does not bash the community.
Mainstream media is very anti-religious.
So anyone who will bash a religious community is made into a celebrity, a best selling author.
That is what fuels a lot of the bashing, the $$$
And attention it generates.
Please go to a Catholic Church for 5 Sundays in a row and then decide if the Catholic Church may offer you peace.
@@suzannakoizumi8605 i definitely would. My second husband was Catholic and 2 out of 4 of my kids spouses are Catholic. 😉

Frieda is the most balanced ex hasidic I know! I love you Frieda, you spread love!! Ur making the world a better place ❤
Thank you!
I think that FV’s respectful and compassionate approach is why she receives respect and compassion in return. ❤️
I am a Catholic female and I love Friedas Channel. I have learned so much~ it’s all about learning :)
Frieda is so incredibly articulate and thoughtful! Thank you for your story.🙏❤️
So honest and eloquent ❤️
whose daughter she is, who's = who is
And don't even get me started on "then" and "than"
and would of and should of. It's would've and shoud've.
Oh no the grammar police are out

After reading Julia Haart's book, Brazen, this interview is so welcome. While Julia seems to be filled with so much anger against her community, Frieda is so balanced in her outlook. She manages to see the positives. Would welcome further interviews with her. On her channel , the interviews with Pearl are fantastic.
Unfortunately Julia Heart is not very honest about her history. It's sad !
I feel something is off with Julia Haart. She comes across as inauthentic.
@@sarahgillen5281 While trauma can cloud a person's memory and paint a picture that is different from reality, she seems to just wanna milk her story for all its worth and this is the way to the cash
I’m busy reading Brazen. I got into watching all Jewish movies. I don’t mind Julia Haart at all. I’m just interested in their way of life.
I enjoyed this interview with Frieda and her thoughtful description of Hasidic life. I feel like part of her heart is still with the community.
I really enjoyed this interview and the way that Frieda so openly and honestly shared her experience growing up in the Hasidic Jewish community. 💗
Great program! thank you
Frieda is awesome! I love her channel! I would love to go on one of her walking tours in NYC! ❤️
I'm so happy you're talking to Frieda, she's amazing!
I love this interview, and Frieda has a great channel, too! You are both delivering great content!

My worlds combine! I've been following Frieda for years. So excited to see her on your show!
she did an amazing job advocating for her cult. you don't usually see that.
I totally agree!
What is her channel called please?
What I love most about Frida's channel is her absolute respect for the community and every person she interacts with and there is never any judgement in her interactions or interviews! She asks her questions purely from a point of interest and not because their lifestyle is so different from the outside world. Great interview, thank you! For those who have never seen Frieda's channel, I suggest you start with one of her videos with the indominable Pearl! They are a great introduction to how a woman who loves being in her community wouldn't want to leave.
Frieda’s channel is great. She will give you insight into the Hasidic community. As a secular Jew I have learned a lot from Frieda’s channel.
LOVE THIS INTERVIEW SO MUCH! I’m so happy you both connected!

Thank you for the interview! I have been waiting for this! Freida, as always your ability to describe things, even the most complicated concepts- is incredible.
Thank you Frieda and Andrew.. that was fascinating. Loved it. I'm off over to Frieda's channel.
Glad you enjoyed it

I just started following Frieda's channel. She does a fantastic job. I'm glad I got to hear her story.
Obeying The Most High's Commandments is paramount for all of us, the most important one being To Love The Most High with all of your heart, as then Obeying the other Commandments will fall into place
My apologies if I have not articulated my thoughts well. I wish Frieda all the best and may The Most High continue to Bless Her and her family. 🙏❤🙏
Frieda is a wonderful person, she's passionate and I love the way she want to understand every people without judgement.

I have very little family. My dad’s side ( Italian Catholics are amazing and supportive) they want me to convert I won’t but don’t understand.

I really enjoyed your conversation with Frieda. It was a good, balanced and informative discussion. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
