Peter, you've done it again! Yup,I agree,Shabbos is literally the highlight of our week. And,if I may just add,all over the jewish religious world, not limited to chassidim per se(except of course the chassidic garb) I do want to elaborate on a point which I'm not sure came through enough: The reason why Shabbos is so special,is because it reminds us every week again of our role and purpose in this world. When G'd created man,HE gave him permission to conquer it, to develop and to use the planet's resources. However, all too easily could man forget himself and overstep his bounderies by exploiting the world and fellow man in his quest for conquer. He needs constant reminding of the fact that the world isn't his to own,but merely to look after with care. That affects both his relationship with nature and fellow man. Both the planet and fellow human ought to be respected, cared for and dealt with fairly. Shabbos is there to remind man of his responsibilities; by refraining from all activities which are generated by the human mind, he's constantly being reminded that the he,as acomplished as he might be in developing the world by the use of his sophisticated mind, ultimatly,he is not in charge and the planet isn's his to own. That generates humility. It's with this lesson in mind that we aproach the following week. Understanding what our responsibilities ought to be and Who we're subject to. Note, that the forbidden activities on shabbos aren't necessarily activities which require bodily effort, but activities which are born of a result of the human mind. Like lighting fire(or in today's times, all matters related to electricity..) It's not the animal like body which is put to the test, but the sophisticated human mind. This is the deeper lesson of shabbos and that's why shabbos is called" the covenant between the Jew and his Creator "( proclaimed in the words in the kiddush, the blessing over the cup of wine at the onset of the meal) Aside from the "don't does "on shabbos, there's a special obligation to honor the shabbos with special food, drink, clothing set aside for shabbos. I think that part came across very well in the video. Needless to say that different families have different means and most aren't as elaberate, however, they all, across the board will save the best and finest for shabbos. Even little children know that goodies are bought for shabbos.. One more note: Peter mentioned the meal being jovial and lighter than expected. Yes,there's great atmosphere around the table, but the conversation also includes discussing the part of the bible which is read in the synagoge that week(a different portion every week), it's meaning and lessons for us. Children contribute to the conversation by sharing all they've learned ,stories are being told. Like I said, shabbos carries a message,to remind us of man's connection to G'd and his purpose in this world and that's reflected in the conversation at the table. Not in a heavy, stiff or boring way, but rather in an intelectual, interesting way, keeping both kids and adults entertained. I thank you Peter, and your hosts for allowing viewers across the globe that get an idea as to why shabbos is so sacred to us,and please note again, that the beauty and unique atmosphere isn't dependant on the exterior of the home, but you'll find the warmth and the joy and the delicious food in very simple homes too!!!
Thank you Ruth! Your writing is eloquent and I can see how much you love G-d and your family. What you said helps me and others gain a much deeper understanding of Shabbos. May He continue to bless you and your family on Shabbos and always.
I don't think non-Jews understand HOW crazy it is that this is being filmed. I don't think this has been done ever before. As a religious Jew this is incredible to see and am glad you enjoyed your Shabbat experience

As a Christian I got a job as ofc manager in an orthodox yeshiva in upstate New York. Some of the best times and memories were spent with the rabbis and their families. As a single mother I was struggling to make ends meet. I was invited to their homes, they made me wonderful meals, took me and my daughter in as one of their own. @@NoName-yf4zi I assume you are a Christian, as am I. Let me draw your attention to a few bible verses. Matthew 26:28 makes it clear that Jesus knew his sacrifice was necessary for the forgiveness of our sins. In Matthew 26:39, Jesus submitted to G-d's will concerning His execution. Matthew 26:28 and Luke 24:45-47 tell us that Jesus was born for the purpose of dying so that our sins may be forgiven. Genesis 12:1-3 says that G-d will bless those who support the great nation begun by Abram. The bible teaches throughout that G-d loves both Jews and Gentiles. Mike and Phil are correct. Speaking as an average not particularly religious man, I have to say I admire and slightly envy the Hassidic life. I lead a fairly isolated, unsupported life, where the highlight of the week is being away from a lousy job, and having some videos to watch or books to read. The Jewish people, and Hassidics in particular, seem to have a great structured, loving community, with a spiritual connection that is stronger than anything I have. Great video series!
I think a lot of people feel this way, Jeffrey. It's a bit what's lacking for many of us these days, especially with covid and distancing. This is what I admire about their culture the most, is their connectivity. When I have kids I want to do something like this every week to break from the doing.

All the orthodox employees left at 11am to make it home for the Sabbath and the rest of us chilled. It kinda set the mood for our weekend too.
Looking at your picture you actually look like one of the real Jews. The so called “black” people are actually real Jews from tribe of Judah. 25 years ago, I lived in the middle of the Hasidic community in Melbourne, Australia. Every Friday all their lights would blaze all night and whole families of 15 or so would roam the streets. Many a time did I press the road crossing button for them on the sabbath.
I must admit for all its worth. I have never had an interest in learning about the Jewish community, where I grew up it was always one of those things, where if you see them leave them alone and if they see me they leave me alone. Let me be clear “I NEVER HAD BAD INTENTIONS OR HAD ANY BAD THOUGHTS ON THEIR COMMUNITY’ it was simply just the norm to not interact with the Jewish community especially being Hispanic in a mostly Hispanic community like Hudson county in NJ. The lifestyle of someone in the Jewish community was always very secretive or at least that’s how it came off. Now fast forwarding into today and watching all of Peter’s videos around the Jewish community, I am very happy and very thankful to watch and learn. I Now for sure have so much more knowledge, respect and appreciation for the Jewish community I really do. I also find it my duty to teach others on what I have learned its the right thing to do. In a world like the one we live in today I think all religions should really capture certain high points of each other’s religions, something as simple and beautiful like the meaning of Sabbath is very interesting and seems to be a very necessary reset for our minds, our bodies and our world. I will say this, I really feel the Jewish community should begin to take some interest in educating others about their culture and their religion, I really feel that its necessary and would only bring good to the table. Thank You for the videos and sorry that it took me so long to understand and appreciate.

@Margaret Kpeh Many Hasidic Jews believe that as Hebrew is the holy tongue it is best not to use it for small talk, but to rather reserve it only for biblical study, blessings, etc. All religious Jews, including those featured in the video, understand Hebrew. This may be one of the best videos I have seen on RUclips...EVER. You have truly done a wonderful job of portraying these people who welcomed us all in to this celebration!!!
I am drawn to these videos and to this community's discipline, respect and love for family and God. One has to ask themselves why the Jewish community is so successful in general (I don't mean financially only, i mean across all metrices of success) and it seems to me that it starts with that respect for their history, their culture, their religion and their family. If all families in the US had this structure, regardless of religion, I think we would be a much healthier country, both politically and morally. Thanks for sharing.
It says in the Bible that they will be the head and not the tail. So that means they will lead in many ways, especially financially as they are very shrewd financially. God made them very intelligent. He gave them a lot of insight personally into many things, this even having to do with the Mosaic Law. Thus I understood from someone who asked a Jewish woman once about this, that they literally praise the living day lights out of a kid, makes them to believe they are best, a lot of self-confidence makes them a go-getter : )) in every way.
@@biancahotca3244 Being "very shrewd financially" is an anti-semitic trope. Sure, THIS family that he filmed was obviously very well-off, but there is no shortage of destitute Jews. Whenever you make a general statement about a group of people, good OR bad, "all X are smart/stupid, industrious/lazy, educated/ignorant" that is prejudice -- racism/sexism/anti-whateverism and is bound to be wrong. People are individuals. They are a product of their lived experiences, upbringing, education, parenting, peers, self-motivation, etc. They are not predisposed to be any particular thing just because of their ethnicity/religion/race/sex, etc. any more than they are doomed/fated to have a particular quality because of their astrological sign. Please treat people you meet as you find them, who THEY are, not what group they belong to.
@@biancahotca3244 Jews are not "shrewd financially." They are not primarily money-focused at all! You may laugh at that, but it's very much true. Rather, EDUCATION and knowledge are at the very top of their priorities. Consequently, some are more likely to have stable careers with decent pay. But this is only incidental to them having prioritized education and knowledge. They dont set out focused on making money. They set out focused on education, studies, becoming learned. Education is an inherent priority in the Jewish religion.
I feel like you have obviously established a love and trust with these people - to a point that they have literally invited you into their home of all things. THAT is when you know someone fully trusts you.
I hope this series is never over. What a blessing to get a glimpse of suck a great tradition and such a delightful view of people that haven’t been painted in the best light within the media.
As a non Jew myself nor a religious person at all, these videos especially including shlomie are just so interesting and fascinating he seems such a nice genuine guy and the Jewish religion and their practises are really nice to see and watch
@epit tan Not at all. If you aren’t aware of what jews think about gentiles, and Muslims in generalI suggest you read up on it. They do the generalizing - considering us all evil - but you are probably fine with that.
As an Orthodox Jew I’ve been watching this series with great interest; Peter has done a wonderful job. I just wanted to reiterate a couple of things: 1) as has been mentioned a couple of times, there are many different “types” of Jews, even within the Hasidic community. Customs and “rules” can vary greatly, as well as things such as styles of dress etc. important to keep that in mind. 2) most of what Peter has shown so far shows more of the physica, practical sense of the community, and this continued once again in this video. However, the materialistic part of Shabbos, while definitely part of the experience, is minimal compared to the deeper, spiritual dimension of the day. It’s virtually impossible to capture that part without actually experiencing it... There’s a lot more to say but a RUclips comment won’t do justice to it lol. P. S. Many Jews aren’t necessarily as wealthy as those in the video, and Shabbos is still very special. Money has nothing to do with the holiness of the day.
I was thinking the same thing regarding the fact that this family seems to be particularly well-off. Not all chassidic families have homes as big or meals as lavish, but the shabbos vibe can be just as nice regardless.
@@Taryag613 Thanks for the like Peter! Yes, 100%. Funny how we keep saying “Hasidic”; Shabbos is special for all Jews. Ironically, this meal in particular didn’t seem to have much a “chassidush” atmosphere to me; it seemed more like a “regular” or “litvish” meal to me... again as I said before there are many different customs etc. When I’ve spent parts of Shabbos with Chassidim it definitely had more to it than this meal lol.
@@Taryag613 great point and I think that just because they do appear well off it doesn’t make them any less spiritual or to love G-d less. The heart matters most and a person can’t take money or material goods with us when we all eventually die. The family may appear generally affluent but they definitely have could have as much Spirit and love as a poor family at least that’s my intuition.
😭😭😭 I am crying from gratefulness. Thank you for making this video and showing the world the amazing gift of shabbos koidesh, the holy sabbath. Peter, you have no idea how lucky you are to have experienced this and got to film it. Not many get a chance to film such an event.
The concept of shabbos must be spread beyond the circles of the orthodox Jewish community who have crazy restrictions on a day which is supposed to be treated like a day off from restrictions.
Oh goodness, in some households (mine has been guilty) it’ll be wayyy more chaotic with people yelling and rushing everywhere and as soon as me and my mom light candles, the mood instantly changes to calm and quiet. It’s interesting to say the least😂
As an orthodox Jew, it's interesting to see the nuances that are different in this particular shabbat (shabbbos). And, I appreciate your obvious respect for different people and cultures. Good for you!
Being a muslim, I am always curious about all other Abrahamic religions. It was so lovely to know how families gather in Shabbat same as we do during the whole month of Ramadan. Great work Peter!
Peter, as a religious Jew who has spent many Shabbaton with the chassidic community, I hope you realise what a rare honour it is for you to be let into a household such as this for Shabbat. It is testament to the sensitivity and open mindedness you’ve shown in this series about the community. You’ve shown yourself to be a gentleman and your videos really do stand as a unique record of the chassidic world. Would love to see more videos like this ... see if you can get an invite for havdallah. Thank you & keep doing what you’re doing.
What a wonderful group of people! As a devout, traditional Catholic I am envious of my Jewish 'big brothers' and their wonderful traditions. They truly love God and want to put Him first in their lives and demonstrate this with the way they live their lives. God bless you all. Peter, thank you for introducing me to these wonderful people I have only seen in passing.
There are two things I want to say, Peter, about this video. The first, as an amateur sociologist, ethnographer and as a trained social worker, I have found your series on American Jews fascinating and enthralling, but this particular video has helped the series reach a zenith I have not experienced on RUclips in terms of an outsider-looking-in perspective. The second, as someone who could be said to be a cinephile, some of your camera work here reminds me of the cinematography found within the films of Terrence Malick. Keep it up. America is wide, deep and grand. And as you said, often misunderstood and, my words, often taken for granted.
I’m a muslim American I deal with them every day and I give this people a BIG respect and love I wish if I could raise my kids like them Thank you Peter🙏
The first time I read about shabbos, it was in Quran e Pak (the religious book of Muslim). But I didn't know Jews still celebrate it..it is like the gentleman said "you learn everyday". Thank you Peter for giving us a chance to always learn something new.
@@yossifelder6775 I think it depends on which type you consider. Some of them definitely looked more secular than Hasidic, and the secular are never pro Arab
@@yossifelder6775 it’s not true. 97% of Jews are Zionist why do you tokenise such a small group of people. Me, and all of my friends are Hasidic and very pro Israel. Don’t get all your info from online.
Peter, you've done it again! Yup,I agree,Shabbos is literally the highlight of our week. And,if I may just add,all over the jewish religious world, not limited to chassidim per se(except of course the chassidic garb)
I do want to elaborate on a point which I'm not sure came through enough:
The reason why Shabbos is so special,is because it reminds us every week again of our role and purpose in this world.
Like lighting fire(or in today's times, all matters related to electricity..)
It's not the animal like body which is put to the test, but the sophisticated human mind.
This is the deeper lesson of shabbos and that's why shabbos is called" the covenant between the Jew and his Creator "( proclaimed in the words in the kiddush, the blessing over the cup of wine at the onset of the meal)
Aside from the "don't does "on shabbos, there's a special obligation to honor the shabbos with special food, drink, clothing set aside for shabbos. I think that part came across very well in the video.
Needless to say that different families have different means and most aren't as elaberate, however, they all, across the board will save the best and finest for shabbos. Even little children know that goodies are bought for shabbos..
One more note:
Peter mentioned the meal being jovial and lighter than expected.
These people seem more modern orthodox to me.

Can be so helpfull I imagine. Also know it can be very crippeling and constrictive depending on your approach and personality/ circumstances. But yeah watching this also made me think.. And actually see myself and the way I deal with spiritual matters from birds-eye perspective.. The way I am struggeling now and then.. lol.. I'm just 'winging it' all the time which does create unrest here and there and these people have a clear 'how to' manual hahaha

Well that's kind of you
I must admit for all its worth.
There is nothing secretive about Jews.

@Margaret Kpeh Many Hasidic Jews believe that as Hebrew is the holy tongue it is best not to use it for small talk, but to rather reserve it only for biblical study, blessings, etc. All religious Jews, including those featured in the video, understand Hebrew. All the prayers and blessings are in Hebrew too. For casual conversation, however, they will stick to different languages (often yiddish or english).

As an absolutely non religious person I find the jewish faith fascinating and beautiful. Very interesting traditions and ceremonies
@@gejyspa Right on.

Yes. I feel you on this comment so much.
The concept of shabbos must be spread beyond the circles of the orthodox Jewish community who have crazy restrictions on a day which is supposed to be treated like a day off from restrictions.
I love that contrast - before the candles were lit, everything was rushed and fast paced, but as soon as the candles were lit, everything just stopped
Oh goodness, in some households (mine has been guilty) it’ll be wayyy more chaotic with people yelling and rushing everywhere and as soon as me and my mom light candles, the mood instantly changes to calm and quiet. It’s interesting to say the least😂

@Jackson Alice you do not need to be in this group. Research it.
The first time I read about shabbos, it was in Quran e Pak (the religious book of Muslim). But I didn't know Jews still celebrate it..it is like the gentleman said "you learn everyday". Thank you Peter for giving us a chance to always learn something new.
As a Muslim its very insightful to see how this community comes together ❤
Yes and that's how the Zionist come together too to take over Palestine. Unfortunately
@@muslimcharityappeal7009 Hasidic Jews are not Zionists bro🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
@@yossifelder6775 I think it depends on which type you consider. Some of them definitely looked more secular than Hasidic, and the secular are never pro Arab
@@yossifelder6775 it’s not true. 97% of Jews are Zionist why do you tokenise such a small group of people. Me, and all of my friends are Hasidic and very pro Israel. Don’t get all your info from online.
@@DLevy613 Liar! It can’t be true.
