  • What could cause the engine temperature gauge to fluctuate so much? An overheating engine, a faulty thermostat, inoperative cooling fans or a low coolant level? All of these are possibilities, but the best way to find the fault and the cause are through a logical diagnostic path.
    See how MiracleMAX finds the reason for the problem.

    Our extrail 250x is doing same thing. But the temp gauge is not going past half. Soon as we shut off vehicle it will not start til it cools down. Secondary fan only starts up when a/c is turned on. Noticed water leaks under vehicle and even a water leak inside on passenger side.

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  6 лет назад +2

      Is the engine using coolant? Keep in mind that these vehicles use 2 thermostats. Have you pressure tested the cooling systems to look for leaks?
      Water dripping under the vehicle on the passenger side can be a drain from the air conditioning evaporator. Just drive without the air con on and see if the water leak at that spot stops. Look for a small drain tube or grommet out of the body on the left hand side and that will be the air con drain.
      Depending on the design of the Xtrail, the secondary should come on either with the main one at a slower speed to start with or the main will come on, then the secondary will come on when required. Is the vehicle actually getting hot?
      It may have other issues related to 'heat sink' when it doesn't start after being turned off.
      I hope that helps :)

    Hi MiracleMax, is it true that the main fan only kicks in when the engine reaches a certain temperature? I had one mechanic say I needed new fan. The other said it kicks in when it's hot. I just had the thermostats replaced for a 2005 X-TRAIL SE in Canada. It overheated 2 weeks later, the coolant was on min and I added some water. (The rad had been flushed when the thermostats were replaced.
    Thank you! I just need some advice before I go to another mechanic. Also, the thick hose connected to the Rad was quite hot even 45 mins after shutting of the engine.

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  4 года назад +2

      Hey Yvette L,
      Yes, it is true that the fans will only operate when needed (13:51). I guess that you don't have a scan tool to use, but if you look at 11:57, you can bypass the system. Easy! Trevor Fraser pointed out (a few comments below) that rather than using a resistor to activate the fans, all you need to do is disconnect the temperature sensor (12:51). Both fans should operate with the ignition on (not sure if the engine needs to be running as well). Just be aware that the fans can operate at any time, so be careful of rotating components.
      If the engine overheats, it will bypass the cap and force coolant out of the radiator and fill up the overflow tank. What is the temperature gauge reading? If the engine overheats, it will take some time before it cools down after shut down.
      Here are some links to checking out for a blown head gasket on a Nissan X-Trail - this might help.

      Hey Test Account YRA
      ,
      Have you done all the testing shown in the video? Is the coolant level OK? Are there any leaks? Has the coolant been replaced regularly?
      Perhaps the radiator could have a blockage. Maybe the thermostat could be stuck. Are you aware that there are 2 thermostats on this engine?

    Thank you for the video. I have a similar issue with the coolant filling up the overflow bottle but not sucking back into the radiator. Both fans are working. The temp gauge never moves past the halfway point. The rad is consistently low, but just by the amount that ends up in the bottle ie. not losing coolant. Heat will work initially, then after a while, only when the throttle is depressed. Have flushed the heater core and the water pump is two years old. I have pressure tested it twice and it holds steady. Any thoughts?

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  3 года назад

      Hey todd ingram,
      Have you considered the radiator cap? It has 2 valves in it - a pressure valve to allow excess pressure to be released into your overflow bottle and a second valve, a vacuum valve, that allows coolant to be drawn back into the radiator when the pressure lowers, as the coolant cools. That way the radiator should be kept full at all times.
      Just keep in mind that these engines have 2 thermostats. Both would need to be operating correctly.

      @@MiracleMAX thank you for your response. I have replaced the radiator cap and both thermostats were replaced when the head gasket was done two years ago. I just today spent over an hour bleeding the cooling system and had a steady stream of bubbles coming up. I’m starting to wonder if there could be an air leak where air gets in but coolant doesn’t leak out. Might that be a possibility? Again, both times it was pressure tested, the pressure held firm for a long time. I have ordered a new temperature sensor as it was inexpensive.

      @@toddingram1198 I gather the hose going to the overflow bottle doesn't have age cracks in it? That might suck some air in, but not the coolant.....
      There shouldn't be bubbles coming up in the radiator regularly after the system has been bled. Have you tried a TK head check?

    Hi! I have a question, I have an nissan xtrail t30 2.2dci 2005 trying to fix my AC and I have a question about fans should both fans kick in when the ac is on or only one, for me only one starts the right side one the other one does nothing unless you turn it by hand then it starts to run, and I have never had problems with overheating so I don't know if they work correctly

      Hey MajorRinaldss,
      If your model has the same strategy as the one shown in the video, both should work, firstly low speed, then high speed.

      Hey Abdullah,
      Just keep in mind that these engines have 2 thermostats. It's easy to forget about the second one. You could have a faulty cluster - cold solder joints, etc. Do you have a scan tool to see what the actual engine temperature is reading?

    when it hot it dosent want to start until its cool down why

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  5 лет назад +1

      Depending on how hot it gets, but it could be various faults.
      How hot is the gauge reading? Is there water in the oil? Oil in the water? Is the coolant in the overflow bottle boiling or just bubbling, as coolant is being pushed out? Does the coolant in the bottle bubble when it is running or when it is turned off? Have you recently replaced the coolant? Have you checked the coolant level in the radiator and overflow bottle when it is cold? Are the fans working?
      Have you watched these videos?
      ruclips.net/video/GjZQfMDbOBo/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/O7tjL2UqvnU/видео.html
      If the engine is extremely hot when you try and start it, it may lose compression due to expansion and may not come back until it has cooled down. If this is done too often, you may lose ring tension and lose compression once and for all.
      Just a few suggestions - I hope that helps :)

      @@MiracleMAX P.S. my problem was the thermostat was gone (tested in hot water with multimeter thermometer), and because it was not opening, the sensor was not reading the right temp and consistently showing cool / just under half on gauge even when obviously hot, and therefore the fans where not coming on. After replacing that, still no dice, ended up there are two thermostats for that car, one for the block at 82°C and one for the head at 96°C! Tested the second one and also faulty, sooo unlikely of both going at the same time but such are gremlins! Replaced the second thermostat and what do you know, she's back on the road again!
