@@neptunevibe - Congratulations, my young Chinese friend. You've avoided committing suicide AND have sacrificed your "nap break" to weigh in here. You'd better get back to work or they'll take you from the factory and ship you to the mineral mines to dig tin ore with the other 12-year-old kids and migrant workers. Stay safe. ;-)

In response to many questions, note that the HDMI DIP includes connections (pads and holes) that allow the user to solder on more pins to duplicate the XIO (GPIO) and some of the other connectors taken up when the HDMI DIP is fitted.
By looking at the shape of the HDMI board I don't think it'll be very easy to do as if you'll notice the cutout on the board is right where the screw mount is on the little cover. You may be able to make it work but you'd have to come up with some type of hold down. Or... you could just glue it using some Shoe Goo or something similar if you don't think you'll ever need to access any GPIO via the bottom of the HDMI boars. Or a Zip Tie / Rubber band
I was a kickstarter backer for this, I really never used the GUI on mine, in fact I should re-flash mine to get it back (I uninstalled it manually). A few notes: - The MicroUSB has a few functions. Power input and flashing as you have demonstrated, but also it also connects to the UART allowing you to access the serial console. When powered using any external connection (battery or +5V and ground on the header) the MicroUSB also functions as a USB OTG connection. - The white LED is connected to the power supply via a resistor and is on when the power is on. The purple LED is connected to a GPIO pin via a resistor and can be turned off. - I live in the United States and NTSC is our standard, however, PAL should be available by tweaking the configuration files. If an NTSC display or a DIP is not available for making this setting, this will need to be done via a serial terminal. - The case was a later add-on after a design change moved key components to the bottom of the board. As a kickstarter backer I got this preinstalled for no additional charge. We also got the video cable for no charge. - Per early CHIP documentation it was originally suggested (and may still be) to connect a wired mouse via USB and a keyboard via bluetooth. - Some CHIPs supposedly have a higher capacity flash and one of the later versions of the operating system allows access to the full capacity (8GB instead of 4GB).
It was never a $9 computer. That was just marketing hype. You had to pay at least $9 more for shipping. There was no way you could get one for just $9, like they lied. Yes, most things cost money to ship, but not cose to 100% of the marketing price.
probably cost less to manufacture, they just didnt sell enough because its inferior to a pi in terms of value and power even at the time this was a crap deal.

You could install Dosbox. That's an versatile and very compatible emulator of early PCs running MS-DOS. X_Wing could be run on a 25MHz CPU. It should be possible to run this at decent speed on a 1GHz ARM CPU.
And to think, it wasn't that long ago when I got my first computer. When I bought it, it was the top of line. It was an IBM 286 that cost nearly $3000.00. The owner was required to load all software. The first was the DOS, then the Dot Matrix printer, sound card and so on. There was no such thing as Windows then. When Windows hit the scene I hated it. I was used to telling the computer, where and what, to do using DOS commands. I played around with CONFIG.SYS a lot. I designed a command to keep the kids from tearing up the computer, which they usually did. Unless you knew what series of keys and their correct order, whenever anyone unauthorized attempted to use my computer my program caused the directory DIR/W to display then turn off, then display the DIR and turn off, a continuous loop that could not be stopped except by powering off the computer or entering my code. It does not, however, do "serious work" like their website suggests, you want to SSH to it for everything you're doing.

@@tyronenelson9124 the raspberry pi doesn't have a onboard flash storage chip the sd card slot is for it u have to buy a sd card with at least 8gb and it costs more than the pi it self
I remember I had one of these and they were actually really cool. Mine broke in combat unfortunately, a big shame the company is no longer around. Great video 👍
At the time of this video I remember thinking small SBC's were not worth it and why get something like a Pi as they are cheap for a reason. Then late 2019 I bought a few Pi's for bedroom emulation though rarely used them and in 2020 with what was going on in the world saw the use of them and made a Pihole/nas out of one. How times change.
All this stuff about its features is well and good… But you haven't told us the most important part! How does it taste? If I'm buying a “bag of chip” for 9 dollars, it better taste great! That's 9 dollars per chip! It's like a gourmet treat at that price.
Actually, the Pi 3 (AFAIK the only pi that has built in WiFi and Bluetooth) costs 60$, and is bigger than the Chip. The Pi Zero, on the other hand may be cheaper, but does not have on-board storage or connectivity.
I'm comfortable using a terminal, I wasn't reference using it as a project board, more as was demonstrated in the video, as a single board desktop PC and comparing the experience with a Pi. I'm actually going to buy buy a Chip to play with, I currently use Arduino or Pi Zeros for my projects.
Arduino and Raspberry Pi's are used in a variety of RC quadcopters lately. Including commercial, professional drones. I wish you would take a look at that area when you have the time.
I baked the whole project, got my chip, the pocket chip, the VGA and the HDMI converter and one additional LiPo battery. I used them to play a little, but was thinking about some project to do... I didn't know that the company closed. I hope to still find documentation when I'll start reusing it...
I got into computers when I was 10, when I got a 386sx 16mhz machine with 1mb RAM and a 42mb hard disc for my birthday. it cost my parents over £1000 (British pounds) with a 14" VGA monitor. That was "only" 26 years ago. I could not have even dreamed at the time that something like this would ever be available, let alone for the price of a fast food meal. 4gb storage is 100 times what I had. Nuts!! :)
siamsurf exactly my thought, I saw this video in my recommended and remember watching it two years ago... I thought they’d have a second version by now and nope they’re gone.
hingeslevers The average human, at rest, produces around 100 watts of power. This equates to around 2000 kcal of food energy, which is why your recommended daily intake of calories is around 2000 kcal. ;D
As noted in the video description, they indeed went bankrupt. But the board is apparently back: shop.pocketchip.co/collections/frontpage/products/c-h-i-p-new (not that I would not recommend purchasing -- a Pi Zero W is a far better bet these days).
That kind of sucks that the CHIP was discontinued. I was going to incorporate a bunch of them into a smart-house/security system to control and automate a lot of things. Going a step up in price won't exactly break my budget...but it would have been nice to see how cheaply it could be done.
@@natesenft5376 This is true. But a microcontroller is not a general purpose computer like a CHIP or Pi Zero. So as you say, it just depends on the application.
Since you keep repeating "Iceweasel is definitely Firefox", it is. Iceweasel is Debian's old variant on Firefox due to legal rights on the logo and name. Which was resolved last year.

Well the HDMI royalty rates are (US$0.05) per unit sold with logo on packaging, I'll do a bit of research & find out why they did it. Most likely is was to make money from the add-on HDMI adapter like Nick said.
MegaTechGuy Just playing devil's advocate. Could also be due to composite being easier to implement or taking less board space. Or to make money, like I said just playing devil's advocate.
My keyboard of choice is the Logitech K400 which has a mouse pad size of a laptop touch area and a decent sized keyboard . Worked fine for all my raspberry projects. Is about 40$ but can often be found for 20$
Useful little SBC 👍. I suppose, if you're running it headless you won't need the HDMI "hat" and this will free up the dip connector for other hardware etc. The HDMI hat could've been called the "Ketchup" - it's a "chip dip" - they missed a trick there 😂
It makes me cry that a plastic tray is $2 and the entire computer is $9. Lol. It's safe to assume they are making far more profit on the broken cd case looking plastic sheet than the computer.
What amazes me is that this small computer is far more powerful than the computer on board the Apollo spacecraft, which was a 16-bit system (if memory serves). But the changes in technology over the past 60 years, while massive, will likely pale to the changes our children with see during their lifetimes.
Back in 2007 Michio Kaku predicted that by 2057 we would have computers as powerful as an average 2007 desktop the size of a postage stamp and costing $0.01. Ten years later, I'd say we are well on our way.
I got one of these when it was on Kickstarter with plans to hook it to a cheap web cam and make a wireless security camera out of it ($5 camera + $9 computer). The camera has since been repurposed and the CHiP is occasionally used as a test web server.
Ed Saucin exactly, and you are paying more because they have capital you dont. just because it costs them say, 300 doesnt mean itll cost anyone 300. in reality it could cost tens of thousands or even millions to have a proper set up to manufacture a complex device such as the iphone.
FYI, they were out of product for about a year but are back, but at a 24.99 price (Right now on sale at 19.99) . I do not see any real change (need to find out old spec to see). I also what happen to that the chip pro they were showing. I am not sure where they are going but i will be just watching to see, and rather buy some other SBC FYI, I have looked at a Wikipedia page on the chip and they say they are out of business. but date april 2018 on the info. So someone has a new site up selling some gear at shop.pocketchip.co/ . Not sure on who it is
I think the Pi zero came to be because of the chip, which picked on a price point of the PI. But now they look to be forgetting why the came to be. Not so much an issue today because there is now a bunch of low cost options to the Pi ( which where some SBCs lose where they are going with it) . I think the only thing they may have left is that chip portable , but have to see. A year from now we shall see. It would not be the first SBc that looked good and went bye bye
Where is it on sale? The Amazon page (the only one I could find) makes it look like it's gone forever, and they were just selling of what they got at the bankruptcy sale: "We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.". If they were actually resuming production, one would expect an estimated restocking date.

All this chip and dip talk makes me hungry.
Bag of chip. Haha
Brian Binns lmao 😂
Great video. Perhaps might be worth pinning a comment at the top regarding the fact the GPIO pins are duplicated on the HDMI dip?
Great idea! I must now figure how out to do this! :)
ExplainingComputers support.google.com/youtube/answer/6000964?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en Here we go
Ah, there! I never look at my videos in the public view, and the menu option only exists there. But now done! :) Thanks.
ExplainingComputers No problem. glad to be of help.
Izzie lol you explained to ExplainingComputers how to use his computer xD
Just a note here... CHIP (in Q3/2018) is back available on Amazon.com but its more expensive. A more powerful "CHIP" (and by a different name) using a different processor has been developed. There are also a lot of original CHIPs for sale online.
10:19 I find the warm, retro look of the video output very pleasing. It's got retro charm.
It's sad to see this great thing dead, luckily I got my PocketCHIP already.
You can still buy PocketCHIPs from China. See my other messages here.
I wish they had made the flasher a publicly downloadable application, I sooooo miss having my pocket chip in my pocket all the time.
Oh wow, $9 and it has a headphone jack,
🔫 Shots fired.
Zereko Gaming bwaaaaaa!
Just get a raspberry pi and be done with it which has an sd card slot and all the connectors you need
lol

This thing is more powerful than the house size computer that they used to send the first rocket to the moon.
IBM 360. My local public library had a copy of the user manual.
All this stuff about its features is well and good… But you haven't told us the most important part! How does it taste?
If I'm buying a “bag of chip” for 9 dollars, it better taste great! That's 9 dollars per chip! It's like a gourmet treat at that price.
This seems quite limited while compared to a Pi, by the time you buy all the needed additions I bet the price isn't that much different either
Actually, the Pi 3 (AFAIK the only pi that has built in WiFi and Bluetooth) costs 60$, and is bigger than the Chip. The Pi Zero, on the other hand may be cheaper, but does not have on-board storage or connectivity.
Bit of an exaggeration on the cost lol, Raspberry Pi3 Model B is around $39 while a Pi Zero is $5
I'm comfortable using a terminal, I wasn't reference using it as a project board, more as was demonstrated in the video, as a single board desktop PC and comparing the experience with a Pi.

They went bankrupt? Dang.
I was hoping i could get one or check out what else the company made.
BloodStorm Wolf You can get cheap ones on amazon.

This was a very fun Video. My inner Nerd is quite satisfied!
Pretty smart computer for the price. Nice video!
I love retro computer never seen this before thanks
This video is great
I got into computers when I was 10, when I got a 386sx 16mhz machine with 1mb RAM and a 42mb hard disc for my birthday. it cost my parents over £1000 (British pounds) with a 14" VGA monitor. That was "only" 26 years ago. I could not have even dreamed at the time that something like this would ever be available, let alone for the price of a fast food meal. 4gb storage is 100 times what I had. Nuts!! :)
Great video, Mr. Gates.

This guy is Psychedelic!

Yes you!
Grow up learn how to use your intellect and stop using drugs it looks you are seeing Psychedelic every where
BRAHIMI Mohamed Lol
What is wrong with 'seeing' psychedelic everywhere, at least, part of the time?
It's amazing the stuff we've lost to time, the company went out of business, these are now almost impossible to find.
and it's only been 2 years
siamsurf exactly my thought, I saw this video in my recommended and remember watching it two years ago... I thought they’d have a second version by now and nope they’re gone.
Very unfortunate that it isn't available anymore I'd love to get one to check out.
Amazing how small they can make computers nowadays.
I predict that by 2020 they will be making PCs as small as cornflakes.

Dead project? From wiki...
"By March 2018, Next Thing Co. had entered insolvency. Many customers still had not received their pre-orders.[13]"
As noted in the video description, they indeed went bankrupt. But the board is apparently back: shop.pocketchip.co/collections/frontpage/products/c-h-i-p-new (not that I would not recommend purchasing -- a Pi Zero W is a far better bet these days).
Rip CHIP! :(

It is not dead. You can still buy one from China, and update it to the newest firmware via Linux. Look for my other message explaining how to do it.
Wow Sir, your video never fail to amaze.
That kind of sucks that the CHIP was discontinued. I was going to incorporate a bunch of them into a smart-house/security system to control and automate a lot of things. Going a step up in price won't exactly break my budget...but it would have been nice to see how cheaply it could be done.
This is REALLY wierd. I found their website last night and it's was in stock and for sale for around $30, but now I can't seem to find it today.
Blessings to you Chris. Great Video and Content. Always smart & humble 🏄
Can I buy that bag of chip from a vending machine?
Man, that would be AWESOME!
I didn't know Angela Merkel knows so much about computers.
no offense mate I love you

It's 2020. Has anything come close to this (including price)?
Best alternative today is a Raspberry Pi Zero W, for about $10-$15, depending on where you buy it.
ExplainingComputers if you just want a microcontroller arduinos cost even less depending on which one you get
@@natesenft5376 This is true. But a microcontroller is not a general purpose computer like a CHIP or Pi Zero. So as you say, it just depends on the application.
@@ExplainingComputers Thanks.

Since you keep repeating "Iceweasel is definitely Firefox", it is. Iceweasel is Debian's old variant on Firefox due to legal rights on the logo and name. Which was resolved last year.

Everyone reading save your time and research OrangePi, its the chinese licensed version of raspberry pi BUT it can load ANDROID 7 OS, Debian, Raspbian And Linux. Plus all orange pi's have external wifi antennas with BETTER CHIPSETS TOO!
--------------------
**Orange Pi Zero 14.50$** - 1.2 ghz Quad Core CPU, 250 mhz dual core Mali GPU, 256/512 mb RAM(version dependant), Regular single USB port, Wireless external Antenna (WIFI), Ethernet 100/1000, and 26 pin expansion port and 13 pin interface for HDMI Shields. The OPI Zero Plus2 has HDMI built in and comes with a camera ribbon cable port
**Ras Pi Zero Wireless 10$** - 1 ghz single core CPU, NO GPU, 512 mb ram, single USB-C data/power ports, Wifi, no ethernet, expansion shields accepted.
**Ras Pi 3 B+ 35$** - 1.4 ghz quad core, 1 gb ram, single core 450 mhz gpu (OPIZero has better GPU), no internal storage, max 64gb TF SD, Bluetooth 4.2, Camera ribbon cable port
**Orange Pi 2 Lite 35$** - Allwinner H6 1.8 Ghz quad core CPU, dual core 650mhz Mali GPU, 1 Gb Ram, external wifi antenna, 4gb flash internal storage, BT 4.2, Ribbon cable port...
**Orange Pi 3 85$** - Allwinner H6 1.8 Ghz quad core CPU, dual core 650 mhz GPU, 2GB Ram, had RC Mode, AV jacks, HDMI out even IR Capable! anything you need but its pricey AF
Go with orange pi, they have like 20 models to choose from which is better so you have something tailored for what you need.
I dont worrk for orange pi im just a stoner who is bored.
Rasbian and Debian are Linux distros! :) Good list above: the Raspberry Pi Zero W is I think the closest and best alternative to a CHIP these days.
Looks like a perfect little SBC to add wireless networking to a USB-only printer
Word of warning to anyone who wants one! If like me your curiosity was piqued and you were thinking of getting one, the company and all of its websites are now gone, it went defunct. You might still be able to find one on places like eBay.
Very interesting device! Thanks Mr.Spock 🖖 Greetings from Chile!
Very odd they didnt use mini-Hdmi, I think it costs about the same.
MegaTechGuy surely they did it that users would buy additional add-on
Yay that is the most likely reason, unless it was made for the South-America market which still uses composite video output.
MegaTechGuy OR they didn't want to pay licensing for HDMI, which would have increased the base cost?
Well the HDMI royalty rates are (US$0.05) per unit sold with logo on packaging, I'll do a bit of research & find out why they did it. Most likely is was to make money from the add-on HDMI adapter like Nick said.
MegaTechGuy Just playing devil's advocate. Could also be due to composite being easier to implement or taking less board space. Or to make money, like I said just playing devil's advocate.
Fun fact this has better graphics than Ubisofts actual in-game graphics.
yup i love chip graphics just looking at the flash mem is awesome

My keyboard of choice is the Logitech K400 which has a mouse pad size of a laptop touch area and a decent sized keyboard . Worked fine for all my raspberry projects. Is about 40$ but can often be found for 20$
Useful little SBC 👍. I suppose, if you're running it headless you won't need the HDMI "hat" and this will free up the dip connector for other hardware etc. The HDMI hat could've been called the "Ketchup" - it's a "chip dip" - they missed a trick there 😂
"A really tiny weenie matchbox-sized computer"
-Chris 2017
It makes me cry that a plastic tray is $2 and the entire computer is $9. Lol. It's safe to assume they are making far more profit on the broken cd case looking plastic sheet than the computer.
About the USB HUB, Were you suggesting it cant put out 500mA ?
I imagine it would struggle to draw that current from the Pi.
If it cant produce 500mA which is not much, Then does that make it non-USB compliant ?
It does, but I don't think they are worried about full USB compliance for a tiny SBC.
Thanks for your reply :)
I think ill be looking into the full spec rasp Pi of some kind, not sure yet.
luv when you put your chip in the DIP
What amazes me is that this small computer is far more powerful than the computer on board the Apollo spacecraft, which was a 16-bit system (if memory serves). But the changes in technology over the past 60 years, while massive, will likely pale to the changes our children with see during their lifetimes.
Hey, the DIP is called dips because it's meant to go with the chip(get it?), not for dual in-line package.
You're joking right? No one can be so dumb as to think "chips and dip" has anything to do with electronics.
Wow, that's not much more expensive than, well, a bag of chips.
How do they make these things so cheaply, amazing.
PS a Great video channel, very informative.
:)
let's see apple try to make a laptop smaller than that!
llVIU it won't matter they still charge something that cost 11 bucks to mate in charge of 800 bucks 00 bunch of bastard that's why I hate Apple
even if they did, it wouldn't be much faster! :)
llVIU yeah 😂😂
actually the new iphone x costs aabout 360 dollars to maek
Ed Saucin exactly, and you are paying more because they have capital you dont. just because it costs them say, 300 doesnt mean itll cost anyone 300. in reality it could cost tens of thousands or even millions to have a proper set up to manufacture a complex device such as the iphone.

FYI, they were out of product for about a year but are back, but at a 24.99 price (Right now on sale at 19.99) . I do not see any real change (need to find out old spec to see). I also what happen to that the chip pro they were showing. I am not sure where they are going but i will be just watching to see, and rather buy some other SBC
FYI, I have looked at a Wikipedia page on the chip and they say they are out of business. but date april 2018 on the info. So someone has a new site up selling some gear at shop.pocketchip.co/ . Not sure on who it is
Thanks for this info. At 24.99 the CHIP is significantly more expensive than the Raspberry Pi Zero W.
If they were actually resuming production, one would expect an estimated restocking date.
shop.pocketchip.co/ is where I seen the info to get, as far as the company goes, according to the Wikipedia page they are out of business
The power adaptor is 5 times the size of the computer!
