This Rock 3C SBC seems to be a winner for hobbyists IMHO.
    - it is available
    - good price
    - software seems to work (even with a sluggish OS menu)
    - analog mic input (mono is good enough for me)
    - M.2 SSD port and eMMC
    - fan power connector (just 2 pin though)
Hopefully more of the usual local RPi retailers will be stocking these also.

Are you sure a micro-controller wouldn't be better? Yes, micro controllers are often limited to just one function. But if done right, a good micro controller could work and probably even consume way less power too. Even a (PLA) Programmable Logic Array may be something to consider if your application is _really_ simple. I do wish Chris would do a video or two on how to _use_ simple devices like Arduino's, EPROMS and PLA's. (Probably not since that's more of an _electronics_ subject.)

Great, enriching post as always. Stability, richness, quality, ease of use, and support over long period of time, in terms of the optimized OS distributions, drivers for peripheral functions - I think play a very important role, apart from price, when it comes to low per-maker volume use-case of SBCs. RPi took care of the above, and that IMHO played a huge role in the success of RaspberryPi (apart from the phenomenal, never-before pricing). I do not think just "low cost" alone can make a SBC popular, and we all know what happens to SBCs that are not popular, especially from a maker standpoint. My 2 cents.

This looks great. I think if the Pi 5 ended up being release with the exact same features but a newer SOC then I'd be a happy chappy. The software support looks way better on this one too compared to some other SBC's so hats off to the Rock 3C developers for creating a true competitor!

    • @STORMFIRE07
      @STORMFIRE07 Год назад +8

Yes indeed, we want a better SOC in Raspberry Pi 5, no, not for the performance, the performance is secondary, the support is primary requirement, the newer SOC should have HW acceleration supported and it should be much more open so that people like Jeff geerling can easily attach a RTX4090 to a Pi lol

    • @LivingLinux
      @LivingLinux Год назад +3

@@STORMFIRE07 I suspect the Pi 5 will also be based on a Broadcom chip. Looking at the progress on the Pi 4, I wouldn't be surprised we will be thrown back several years with the HW acceleration support.
The Pi 4 now has Vulkan 1.3 support and Firefox has planned HW video decoding. I think V4L2 M2M should come with FF 115.
Not sure this will work immediately with the future Pi 5.

Disc IO for the M.2 slot could be tested with one of the riser cables you used on some other boards with the mad oriented slots perhaps? Also, a little play around with the GPIO on the 3C would be nice to see. Just to see how compatible it is against the Pi 3/4 - especially the serial interfaces that can be troublesome at times.

It's great to see an "almost there" raspberry pi competitor at around the same price point! Especially now with the RPI shortages.
A tip that I think that could help you Mr. Barnatt, is the use of those inexpensive USB C power metters usually available for electronics repair could help you pin down a more precise voltage/current and power usage as they go to the miliamps range.
That's interesting that OKdo was a partner for the RPI, I though that (as said on a recent video from Jeff Geerling on his RPI factory tour) that the RPIs were made on Sony's factory in the UK since the beginning.
As always, a great and detailed video.

ARM support is prevalent enough these days in Linux naturally, but it's those weird problems that people hit and need support for that seem to make or break adoption of these boards. My first (and so far last) non Raspberry Pi SBC was an Asus TinkerBoard, and I still feel the burn from it 😆.

There IS an upgraded board with the 4GB ram and THAT one(Rock 3B?)in the newest AKAI MPC Keys keyboard based version of the MPC Live 2 units. So the price and micro size of these boards make them ideal for real world products!

Very interesting. I know that OKdo / Radxa offer customization for industrial customers. This is a great of example of "what are companies using SBCs for". :)

LOL I wanted to be skeptical because the raspberry pi foundation burned me so bad but everyone seems happy and excited so hopefully things are looking up for sbcs it always sounded like a great idea.

Sounds like a "tough little chip", to paraphrase an old sci-fi trope.
Google was not much help with the phrase "witting on", so I had a bit of a blank unscheduled nap come over me in the middle. Had to rewatch the last 3 chapters once I woke up again. Please do bear in mind what is easily defined when narrating.

I should know... I suppose, but I didn't know what OTG was regarding the USB 2.0 port.... so I asked ChatGPT.
    ChatGPT:
"In the context of USB ports, "OTG" stands for USB On-The-Go. USB On-The-Go is a specification that allows devices to act as both a USB host and a USB peripheral, enabling them to establish a direct connection with each other without the need for a computer or additional USB host device.
An OTG-enabled USB port, such as the one mentioned in the video, can function as a USB host when connected to USB peripherals like keyboards, mice, or storage devices. It can also function as a USB peripheral when connected to a USB host device like a computer or a smartphone.
The OTG functionality expands the versatility of the USB port, allowing devices to communicate and transfer data directly with each other, which can be useful for various applications, such as transferring files between smartphones, connecting USB peripherals to tablets, or even connecting USB storage devices to smartphones or tablets for data access.
It's worth noting that not all USB 2.0 ports have OTG capabilities. So, in the case of the board mentioned in the video, one of the USB 2.0 slots being OTG means that it supports USB On-The-Go functionality, allowing it to act as both a USB host and a USB peripheral."

Thanks, always interesting to see new boards to play with. I am interested to see when they will start taking on AV1 transcoding via ffmpeg. Currently I favour Intel CPUs because of their good support for AV1. It will be interesting to see how AV1 support develops on new SOC boards.

Seems to have a form factor nearly exact same as rpi3. A minor detail any number of SBC designers bizzarely depart from. The fact okdo manufactured earlier rpis suggests we can expect decent quality. I'm also impressed everything worked out of the box, I mean, with anything not raspberry that is a real risk.

You might want to use handbrake to test productivity task cpu performance, as it uses a lot of instruction set extensions when available.
That way it scales with architecture, not just with cores and frequency.

nice to see the energy measurements. 1 watts of energy and 2 under full load is quite low, so for many more projects that either require long runtimes or low power usage.

I bought the upgrade of this ( Rock 4SE ) 4GB RAM Dual A72 , Quad A53 and Mali T860MP4 GPU and found it lacking for my purpose.
I was looking to get this SBC set up for MicroPython programming.
All the software needed to program or even connect to the microcontrollers were older versions.
The updated software needed installed and worked fine on either a Linux PC or Windows.
As soon as Raspberry Pis are back in stock I'll try them.

I stopped buying single board computers 2 years ago when the SBC prices ballooned. Recently I bought a bunch of mini PCs, really powerful ones, for almost the same cost as some of the SBCs, and I thought that was hilarious. This SBC is at least reasonably priced, so I'll consider it for future projects, but for now I think I'll make do with my haul of mini PCs and dirt cheap microcontrollers. I am going back to my roots in a way, since I learned how to program by writing assembly code for 8051 microcontrollers lol

      Bingo, You nailed it Sir.
Too many manufacturers don't get that! They forget the 'maker' features and try to build a $100-£200 computer with GPIO pins as an afterthought. The maker market fuelled the growth of the pi.
At the right price point a SBC with the needed extras onboard becomes a better alternative to starting with an Arduino or ESP32 and stringing modules together.
I'll also say that I have a few used NUC's doing a better job than £30 worth of Pi

it seems that they reused a known supported gpu in this soc, and that is good news, but i doubt much people will buy it for youtube, it is more for maker market with those 2 gbs of ram but the power consumption numbers are brutal, 2 watts under load!

Indeed, right now stocks are limited! I can now see just one here: www.okdo.com/p/okdo-rock-3-model-c-2gb-single-board-computer-rockchip-rk3566-arm-cortex-a55/ But I was told on 15th May, by Richard Curtin (CEO and co-founder of OKdo) that "The boards are selling very fast but we started volume manufacturing last week and inventory will arrive in Asia, Europe and US next week".
And this morning the video has been included in a post from OKdo's VP of operations, where it says that "we have volume production in the plan across the next three months". So we can but hope! :)
