Love my new Kona Limited FWD. Highway trips actually average close to 38 MPG. The turbo engine has plenty of power for passing and merging into traffic. I had a roof rack optioned on mine, so I added a roof storage bin to create more space for long hauls. I've driven my new Kona for just over a month and put around 1,500 miles on it. No issues, just great performance and utility for my urban lifestyle.
    Update:
It's been a year and my experience, after having driven my Kona over 16,000 miles, has not changed. In fact, when I set the adaptive cruise control to 65mph my highway MPG, as rated by the car's computer, has averaged as high as 50 MPG on 2-3 hour highway drives. I've also discovered that if you need the extra power of Sport mode you can simply "kick" the center console gear shifter to manual mode (move the shifter to the left) and the car will switch from SMART (my daily mode) to SPORT. Despite being in manual mode the car will continue to automatically manage shifts for you, but now in SPORT mode. When you no longer need the power boost simply "kick" the shifter to the right and the car returns to SMART mode.

I'm also pleasantly surprised to find even with AWD, this might be the first vehicle I've purchased where the EPA rating, trip computer and actual mileage all agreed almost exactly under thoughtless, normal driving.
Easily a little more if I'm not at all aggressive, and admittedly a little less when goofing around with sport mode. 😁

Sorry Hyundai is trash. They have been facing lawsuits from 2012 up until now in 2021 models for engines being built with bad connecting rod bearings. The only fix is a brand new engine. Look it up on Hyundai recalls and lawsuits. They denied the issue to thier customers the finally admitted it in court when they lost. How can a company make the same mistake over and over for almost 10years?

@@sonja4164 You will enjoy this car very much. As far as the engine, No recalls on that. The only recall is the horn which is a very easy fix. I was told the day I bought my car that the engine had no issues . It looks like Hyundai didn’t take that laying down and worked very hard to correct the issues that the earlier models were experiencing. I was going to get a Tucson but I’m actually very happy with the Kona and love the way it handles and the fact that I can’t remember the last time I filled the tank. It’s extremely conservative on gas and the only drawback which is workable, is the cargo space. But that doesn’t bother me in the least. I go to a lot of craft fairs and I’ve learned how to work around the cargo situation. But the snow handling is fantastic . Good luck finding one and I hope you enjoy it.

What I'm about to say is a matter of preference on if a pro or a con. But the Kona is not the same size as the Crosstrek. It's almost a full foot shorter. Given this is the subcompact space, each can decide for themself if they want slightly smaller and more agile, or slightly bigger and a bigger boot.
I go absolutely nuts whenever someone knocks the slightly reduced storage of the Kona given this is the subcompact space. The shorter vehicle length was a major selling point for me. Easier parking! I'm also not one who understands what all this cargo people are hauling is though. I find it more than adequate.

2022 Kona is a CVT unless you get the 1.6L turbo that gets a 7-speed. I think putting in a CVT in a small powered engine is a mistake. Having owned both classic Versa 4-speed and Versa Note CVT. CVT is terrible in smaller gas engines.

I wish the HUD still was available (our 2020 Accord has it). The safety electronics makes up for the missing HUD and I won't give up my leather seats, now that I've had them for 3 years! Yes, the N-line is cool, but add the tech package to the model, and you are paying the same as the Limited!!! Might as well get the Limited, with leather seats.

These fill such a unique space in the segment as it's closer to a sporty hot hatch than utility SUV. Sadly Hyundai has forsaken this idea for the 2024, Gen 2 refresh, increasing the size for more room and producing the EV body styling for ALL the powertrains instead of just sticking with an SUV offering under the Ioniq nameplate. I suspect within 5 years Ioniq will spin off into it's own brand like they did with Genesis.

Things you should know about the Hyundai kona- there is a massive recall for poorly heat treated piston rod bearings that break apart and causes engine to stall, catch on fire or blow a connecting rod through the block. The fix? There is no fix you need a engine. Hyundai has been having this issue for 10years and managed to still mess it up again with the exact same part.

    • @fireheartis1

Also it has only been around since 2018 dude, so how the hell has the problem been around since 2012!?! Also the 2018 hasn't had that problem period. Hyundai realized there mistake and has been fixing it for customers for free with no co-cost!

They even faced lawsuits for lying and trying to blame customers. But once you drive that car off the lot the problem is yours. Yes they will fix the recall or issue but who wants to own a vehicle knowing sooner or later it will have a issue and a catastrophic one. That doesnt sit well and obviously dealers will not tell you. If you can stay away from GDI engines and stick to multi port/port injections. GDI does not spray fuel from behind the valves so they would never get clean and get fouled with hard carbon deposits and you will loose perfomance and rough idle. A catch can only slows the build up.
