  • The updated Kona is here and Hyundai has made some drastic changes for 2022. On the outside you will find a totally updated front fascia, headlights, grill, and wheels. On the inside you will be greeted to an all new infotainment system with WIRELESS Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. Under the hood is a 2.0L inline-4 that is producing 147HP & mated to a CVT. The SEL trim is the value leader of the Kona lineup. Is the NEW 2022 Hyundai Kona SEL a better SUV than a Honda or Toyota?

    The SEL just doesn't get enough love. Most videos are the Limited and up and I'm not paying $30, 000 for this car. I had a 2019 Kona SEL and just got a heck of a trade from my dealer for a 2021 SEL, AWD. Irwin Hyundai in NH does not carry front end drive. Got the Pulse Red with the Black roof. They had to trade with a dealer in NY State but I'm happy with the car and the deal. Thanks for the detailed video on the SEL, I'm not a fan of Turbo so I get along just fine. I love your candy stash places in the cars!

    Just a heads up, I bought a 2021 SEL Plus. As far as driving. Sport mode is only good for constant elevation. If you’re climbing, just switch to the normal mode. The sport mode is irrelevant.
    I believe it’s best at normal mode all the time, it seems to have more power. Only time I switch to sport mode is to manually shift gears.
    If you want to launch, switch to Sport mode and manually shift. It’s good when there’s a merging lane ahead.

    Give me an unconditional 150k no-questions-asked new replacement (with rental car) warranty on the Continuously Volatile Transaxle and I will ride off down the road with one. The front seats even in the base model are some of the best I have sat in since the 90’s at least. Thanks for another great review. Cheers.

    Great review as always Joe! I got the new Kona here in EU (Romania) for 18.895 USD in the Highway trim and same color (here it's called Dark Knight Pearl :) ). I'm not sure which is the similar trim for US because they really mix it up for different markets, but what mine's got is the digital dash, the heated steering wheel, rear camera and parking sensors, some cloth on the doors and because it's EU a 1L (3 cylinders) engine with a manual gearbox (no blind spot monitoring, no rear armrest). In the 2 weeks I had the car I made a little over 1k miles and I can say it's really comfortable for longer trips, on the highway you can set the lane following assist and cruise control and relax behind the steering wheel because the systems work really well. The only gripe I have with the car is that the interior plastics are scratching really easy but for me is not something I didn't expect at this price. In my opinion, it's a good little car for the money! ;)

    Not all CVTs are the same. Coming from a 2012 Mitsubishi with a Jatco to a Kia Soul with this same CVT, this one is so much better. Better performance off the line, especially in sport mode, and nice simulated shifts.

It's been great. I put alot of care into it. 4k synthetic oil changes, good tires, keep up on the maintenance, constantly cleaning it.. The Kona would be for my wife mostly. Long ride to work in the winter.. awd would be nice with good mpg's as a plus.

    Just traded in my 2020 corolla for one of these (SEL trim) and I couldn't be happier so far. This car has better features and the warranty is fantastic. I think with religious maintenance (which I do anyway) this car is going to last me a LONG time.

      Good luck with it. Happy for you!. I was thinking of trading my 18 Elantra for one but as you put it "religious care" which I do to my Elantra I'm afraid I'd loose on the trade. Maybe when it's paid off...we'll see. But I have the same 2.0 and it is so reliable. Just not powerful. But I get 40mpg and over. So it's a trade off. The all wheel drive is nice for the winter in New England.

    For me, the change to a CVT with auto start-stop are definite deal breakers in this vehicle!
    The previous six speed automatic torque converter transmission had proven its reliability.
    Also, auto start-stop is just annoying. This vehicle was already fuel efficient. It did not need
    auto start-stop.
    They should have made LED headlights and lumbar support in both front seats standard.
    Everything else should have been left alone!!

    This is how I wish the VW group and Mercedes cars with fake exhausts did rear bumpers. I understand why they don’t want the exhaust sticking out the back. But just keep it clean. No fakery. Nobody likes that. :/ great vid, Joe. I still wonder if you actually eat all the snacks you mention, given the shape you’re in. :P

    I have seen a lot of people saying good things about them Kia and Hyundai vehicles but some of them do have issues , I don’t think I would buy one, I was tempted for a Palisade but there have been reports of transmission failures at 4,000 miles for example and another well known windshield cracks

    The only downside with the Kona is the 2.0 liter engine and it has been catching on fire. Which they know all about (recalled) on 2021 and under but its still on the 2022 so that will probably recall it for catching on fire.

    • @Italiantonio76
      @Italiantonio76 2 года назад +1

      Hyundai already addressed this issue back in late 2020 and there haven't been any such recalls on the 2022 models.

    I can't believe they put in a CVT.. when you have a small gas vehicle engine under 180hp, it's always better to have actual gears 5-speed, 6-speed. When you have the full torque of an electric engine, like in a hybrid or a full electric than CVT is fine.

    I was looking at one today and almost got it. I wasn’t blown away. It’s very basic. The seats are manual and I had to wrestle the seat and levers to adjust the seat to the straight up position. And It’s a FWD. I want an AWD.

    • @SteelHex
      @SteelHex 2 года назад +1

      All Kona trims are available in AWD, except probably the N. The seat is powered on upper trims, like Limited and Ultimate. You have to search online (like autotrader) for upper trims though, because they’re popular and run out quickly. I found my AWD Limited in a town 2 hours away.

    as far as i know, the IVT has a chain, not a belt. The models with the 1.6 L turbo give you almost the same m.p.g. as the 2 liter but much more hp and torque. 0-60 in about 6.7 seconds. also, the FWD have a torsion beam rear suspension while the AWD models have independent rear suspension, much better ride and handling.
    as the owner of the 2020 limited, the small price difference between the SEL and the Limited makes the Limited a much better buy, with the engine and suspension upgrades , as well as the leather seats ( power driver's).
    it should also be noted that the DCT is a much better transmission, shifts far faster than you can shift a manual.

      welcome. debating getting the N. on one hand , more hp. on the other, much easier for cops to ID, in towns where traffic court is just a revenue collector.

    • @Italiantonio76
      @Italiantonio76 2 года назад

      $5000 dollars isn't exactly a "small price difference" between the SEL and Limited. Give me a CVT over a DCT any day. Once the latter goes out, (usually sooner than later), you better hope it's still under the 100K, warranty as they less reliable and repair costs are a nightmare.
